WHAT’S INSIDE

COME ON YOU REDS! Seven days on from an afternoon we’ll never forget, Marc Skinner’s side are back on home soil... but this time in more familiar surroundings! In today’s match programme we simply have to look back to that Old Trafford win, but as the boss (p4), captain (p11) and forward Signe Bruun (p22) are keen to point out, our meeting with Hope Powell’s Brighton is equally important when it comes to our Champions League ambitions. Today could also see another player become the first Red to reach 100 appearances (p16) – now, whoever could that be?

HEAD COACH’S COLUMN

MARC SKINNER After a momentous day at Old Trafford, it’s time to switch focus to Hope Powell’s in-form Seagulls, ahead of a big final push as the WSL season reaches its climax... Good afternoon. I’d like to welcome all our regulars back to Leigh Sports Village – and hopefully many more of you who were inspired to come after last weekend’s special win over Everton at Old Trafford. Last Sunday was a great event for everyone involved. There were so many little uplifting moments that stood out. Before the game, there was a fan who was attending with her husband, and it was their anniversary. She told me how this was the first game she’d been to at Old Trafford and how, once she knew the women’s team were there, she knew it was something she had to be at. And then on the pitch, there was Alessia scoring two, and Katie Zelem, as a United fan, converting a penalty in front of the Stretford End. It was a true romantic moment that you don’t get many of in football. Then, at full-time, walking around the stadium to clap the fans who waited behind – these are all things we’ll remember forever. We allowed ourselves a short moment after the game to really reflect on what we’d achieved, but then we were on to our build-up for Brighton, because we know how important it is to reset and focus and try and maximise our potential today. It’s going to be a very difficult game. They’ve won three games out of their last four, which shows the qualities they have. Knowing what Hope Powell is trying to achieve and the players and quality they have, it will be a very difficult game and something

04

we will not underestimate in terms of our preparation and attitude when we step out on the field. We’ll give absolutely everything, as we always do, for our fans. Speaking of the fans, I’d like to think the performance and spirit at Old Trafford will attract many newcomers to support us at Leigh. We’d love to fill the stadium in the future and, while our fans who already turn up are wonderful, and bring more than enough noise, it would be great to keep adding to that and grow our exposure in the game, because this is a team of really strong women who deserve to be playing in front of big crowds. One of those is Ella Toone, who is on 99 appearances. She’s a wonderful player, super competitive, and it’s hard to believe someone so young could play 100 games so soon at a team like this. Her competitive nature stands out in terms of why she’s going to be such a key player for us going forward, and it’s a pleasure to coach her. Finally, I’d just like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved behind the scenes for the Old Trafford game and to all the fans who turned up. We all came together for a memorable day. It’s important we now capitalise on that to continue to inspire young girls and boys to take up the sport and share the love between the whole Manchester United family. Enjoy today’s game.

LESSI’S LOOP OF THE DAY As we’ve already seen a few times this season, few forwards are as strong in the air as Alessia Russo, and our top scorer was at it again seven days ago, heading home on two occasions at Old Trafford, either side of Katie Zelem’s penalty. Russo’s first was surely the goal of the game – plus it made for this brilliant photo. After Ona Batlle had floated in a hanging cross from the right on 35 minutes, Alessia made the finish look easy, when it was anything but. With three opponents around her, our no.23 had to adjust her feet to meet the cross, before straining to get under the ball as she made contact with it. From that point on, we all watched on, in what felt like slow motion, as it looped up high before dropping beyond the reach of goalkeeper Sandy MacIver and into the net. Yes!

MATCH ROUND-UP

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT... The story of the match last Sunday Sunday 27 March, Women’s Super League, Old Trafford UNITED 3 (Russo 35, 84; Zelem 54 pen) EVERTON 1 (Emslie 4) On a historic afternoon last Sunday, United came from behind to win 3-1 in the team’s first-ever outing in front of a joyous Old Trafford crowd. After an entrance to remember, the Reds had to respond to an early setback. The visitors’ Kenza Dali set Claire Emslie away down the right flank, with the latter driving into the box and powering into the bottom left corner to open the scoring just four minutes in. Marc Skinner’s side searched out an instant response attacking the East Stand. Captain Katie Zelem looked to lead by example, flighting a ball just wide before Russo, who pressed high to win the ball back, saw her following low effort gathered by goalkeeper Sandy MacIver. United’s best attempt at a leveller in the opening half hour then came via Martha Thomas, who connected on the volley following a well-worked short corner but it was well saved with Leah Galton’s rebound charged down. The Reds’ persistence paid off in the 35th minute, however. Jackie Groenen slipped Ona Batlle into the right channel, with the Spaniard’s cross picking out Russo, whose looping header found the net to level.

Zelem fires home from the spot in front of the Stretford End

As the first half neared its end, both sides came close. First, Hannah Blundell saw a shot blocked for United, before Everton midfielder and skipper Izzy Christiansen curled just over the crossbar at the other end. Attacking the Stretford End after the interval, we couldn’t have gone much closer to kicking off in the perfect manner. Following good work from Thomas on the right, she picked out an unmarked Ella Toone at the back post, but our no.7 couldn’t keep her effort down. Thomas was involved again moments later, as United were awarded a penalty. The forward was brought down inside the box by Lucy Graham, with Zelem stepping up to fire it into the centre of the goal and make it 2-1. The Reds thought our advantage had been extended on 62 minutes when Thomas fired into an empty net after Maria Thorisdottir’s initial header was saved, but the assistant referee’s flag would go up for offside. As the game ticked into the final 20 minutes, Everton’s Emslie cut in from the right and curled just wide of Mary Earps’s far post with a low left-footed effort. But United would put the result beyond doubt with just over five minutes left to play. Zelem’s corner from the right found the head of Russo, who nodded past the crowd of players in the box and into the net to make it 3-1 – her second of the game, and 11th of the season. Russo was replaced by Signe Bruun soon after and walked off to an ovation. Bruun nearly then left her mark with an audacious attempt from range that was diverted away by an outstretched arm from MacIver. CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

KATIE ZELEM The skipper certainly kept her cool last Sunday, and she knows calm heads will be needed once again if the Reds are to emerge victorious again today... Welcome back to Leigh! Last Sunday was a great experience for the team as a whole, of course, but for us United fans in the squad, it was extra special. Scoring a goal at the Stretford End is definitely one of the highlights of my career. It was something I dreamt of when I was little. I’ve watched it back and I look really blasé on the penalty, when I probably wasn’t! We’ve barely had any penalties this season but I had thought it through before the game – when it came down to it, it was just about the process and putting that plan into place. Another big United fan is Diane Caldwell, and it was such a shame about her injury, which came a bit out of the blue and meant she’d miss the match. But we’re a really adaptable unit, and Hayley Ladd moved back to defence last week. If Hayley hadn’t been available, I might have been back there, as I was at West Ham, but I’m really glad she was. I though she did a great job. It was such a positive occasion, with so many families there on Mother’s Day. My mum was there too, and I was fortunate enough to have some hospitality tickets through adidas, which was amazing for myself and my family. Afterwards, my mum, dad and I went out for a Mother’s Day meal in town, and I’m so glad we got the opportunity to do that, because she’s always there for

me so I was pleased I could repay the favour. Since Monday, though, it’s all been about preparing for Brighton – a game that’s just as important as Everton. We’ve got four games left and As well as scoring, Zel claimed assist no.7 for we need to treat them the season at Old Trafford all like a cup final. Brighton’s manager Hope Powell is definitely a trailblazer in the women’s game, and someone we all respect. Hope achieved some great things as a player and helped push the game forward to where it is now. It’s incredible to see how much she’s still helping the game progress, and we know she’ll set up her team well. They’ll be really organised, so that’s something we need to prepare for. After today we have a three-week gap, and it’s always good to go into the international break on the back of a victory, so we’ve got all the motivation we need to pick up all three points.

MU FOUNDATION

REPRESENTING THE REDS Inspired by our historic match at Old Trafford, Foundation participants enjoyed playing against youngsters from Everton in the Community... United Women’s first fixture at Old Trafford in front of fans caused a palpable buzz across the club. With International Women’s Day also falling in March, there’s been much focus on the women’s game and on female empowerment in general, and this was no different at the Foundation. In the week prior to the big match at the Theatre of Dreams, female participants from across the Foundation’s Street Reds projects formed a team to take on players from sporting charity Everton in the Community. The players were selected as a reward for their dedication and application at their particular project, with all the participants enjoying the opportunity to represent United ahead of the senior team’s own match with the Blues from Merseyside. “It’s great that there is so much focus on our women’s team at the moment and we wanted to use it as an opportunity to reward participants who have shown real dedication and enthusiasm,” the Foundation’s female development coordinator Hannah Mitchell (inset, right) told us. “Seeing the first team performing at Old Trafford can only

The young participants were proud to wear the United shirt as a reward for their dedication

be a good thing for these girls as it highlights that whatever they aspire to do in life can be achieved with hard work. “I also want to thank the team at Everton in the Community for making the drive over to Manchester. It was a really positive evening for all the girls and a very entertaining game too!” Elsewhere, the big game was also being recreated at the Foundation’s Ability Counts session. The programme offers young people with disabilities the opportunity to play or coach with Manchester United. Two days before the historic women’s team match at Old Trafford, the participants were joined by their counterparts from Everton in the

Community’s inclusion programme, who had been invited to take part in a series of friendly matches at United’s iconic Cliff Training Ground. Throughout March, the Foundation’s girls’ development team have being hosting events celebrating International Women’s Day, including a networking event at Old Trafford, where participants had the chance to meet and talk to female club employees (inset, above) and the opportunity to gain an insight into the world of motorsport at a ‘Girls on Track’ event . All of the events were planned to provide inspiration and opportunity for a generation of young girls. For more information on the Foundation’s community work, please visit mufoundation.org

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

#16 BRUUN 22 07 Manchester United Women v Brighton Hove

SIGNE BRUUN

Our exciting January loan signing can’t wait for the fixtures ahead, and here she discusses life in Manchester, recovering from a “frustrating” injury, her Champions League knowhow from playing in France, and getting out for mountain walks... Interview: Harry Robinson

Let’s start with Sunday, Signe – how was it for you? It’s one of those games and days that you’ll remember when you look back at your career. It was a very big experience for all of us. Old Trafford has so much history and you could just feel it when you stepped on to the pitch, when you walked into the dressing rooms – the whole atmosphere around. It was a great experience for all of us and important we got the win as well. That was the most important thing; football is about winning the game. But, yes, a great experience for all of us, and for me, personally, I’ll always look back on it with a smile. The result must have been very satisfying given how tight the race for the top three is in the WSL? Yeah, definitely. We try to take one game at a time, focus on the weekend, do all the right stuff in the week to be ready. When we go out there, we do all we can do to get all three points. We know how important it is right now to get as many points as possible – hopefully, three points in every game! – but in this league, everyone can beat everyone. That’s what makes this league one of the best in Europe, if not the best. It’s all about focusing on the game at the weekend, doing the best we can. If we focus too many games ahead, we’re going to lose. It’s one at a time. But we know we want to get into the Champions League, and that’s why we want to do the business and do whatever it takes to get all three points. How have you found your first few months at the club? The girls and the club have been really good at taking me in and making me a part of the club really fast, and obviously the fans as well. I don’t think it’s a secret that I got an injury after two or three games, which has been very frustrating for me, because that’s not why I’m here, that’s not why I play football. I want to be on the pitch, I want to work hard every day in training and become a better player, help the team in the week, and push the team every day in training. So it’s been a bit frustrating and disappointing, but it’s also part of football. I’ve done everything I can to get back and be strong as fast as

possible; hopefully I can get on the pitch more now. It’s been a really good experience so far; I’m happy to be here. How has the group helped you to settle in? My first day here, everybody was so welcoming. They and the club did everything to help me settle in, helping with things like where to live, how to get a car – the kind of stuff you need but you don’t really think about straight away when it happens so fast. The club and the girls have done a really good job in making it easy for me to focus on what matters: playing football. Obviously, I’ve spoken a bit more to the Norwegian girls – I speak Danish and they speak Norwegian so we understand each other and can communicate, but in general, I feel like everybody’s been really nice, and even when I’ve been looking for a house, everybody was trying to help out, even going back and forth between training and the city when I didn’t have my own car! I think that’s a strength of this team. We’re in it together and everybody’s helping everybody. It’s still only been a couple of months, we know, but have you noticed any differences in football here compared to Paris, Lyon or Denmark? It’s still early. There’s always a focus on different things in different countries, depending on the culture of the league, but in general, there’s a bit more focus on the physical part here, but the tactical part as well. I like that. And life in Manchester, have you enjoyed it so far? Yes, I live near the city and I’ve been a bit surprised by it, to be honest. It’s cool, it’s calm, there’s some very good ⊲

I expected it to be raining every day, but it’s only rained a few days since I arrived, so I like the weather here as well. Overall, I like the city. The team’s target is finishing in the top three because everyone here wants to play Champions League football. You have played in the Champions League and you know how good it can be – do you speak about those experiences to your team-mates? Yes, some people ask, ‘how was it playing in the Champions League and what is it about those games?’ I feel like everybody knows there’s something different, a special atmosphere about those games. When you walk on to the pitch, there’s just something about it. That special feeling is maybe a bit similar to when you go to the Euros or the World Cup, like the atmosphere at a tournament. And in the games, anything can happen. Sometimes it’s one goal to make you go through or not. There can be real fine margins. It’s such a big tournament for clubs and players. If you perform well as a club or player, it can change your club or change your career.

24

With injury restricting her game time to five appearances to date, she’s eager to end the 2021/22 season on a high

The players deserve to be a part of it, and for the fans, watching those games is special. I really hope we do it. Marc’s philosophy is always ‘one game at a time’ – is that even more important for these last few games? Definitely. We talk about it as a group: one game at a time. A lot of people outside the team and the club want to talk about the last game, away at Chelsea, but for us, we just think about the next game against Brighton and after that, we’ll think about the next one. It’s just about keeping our focus and doing the right things consistently. How have you found joining up with a new team, a new set of coaches, with a new, different aim to the one you might have had at PSG or Lyon – do you think it’s helping you to learn different things? For sure. It’s a change in your mind, a change in the way you train, a change in what the focus is, what’s important, and I think that helps you become better. It takes you some time to adapt to a new team, but also a new country. I’m here to learn and become better, so I’m trying to take everything I can from Marc and [assistant coach] Martin [Ho], and also the girls, and I try to give something back because we’re in it together. It’s a very young set of forwards at United, with you, Alessia, Tooney and Martha – who is the oldest and she’s only 25! Is that exciting?

The Danish forward’s first start came dgdgdin February’s impressive draw away to Arsenal in the WSL

“THE PLAYERS DESERVE TO BE A PART OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, AND FOR FANS, WATCHING THE GAMES IS SPECIAL. I REALLY HOPE WE DO IT” A hundred per cent. We’re pushing each other every day and supporting each other. All of us want to help the team and all of us want to score goals – that’s why the attackers are there, in the end. I think there is so much talent in this group and the fact so many of us are so young as well, I think that shows how much potential there is in this team. I think the future is very exciting. I’m very excited to see what’s coming up in the next couple of years, not just this season or the next, because I think there are players here who have world-class potential and are close to getting there already. It’s nice to be a part of a team and a group like that where everybody pushes each other every day to become better. You’re not 24 until next week, but this is your fourth major club and you have a lot of international experience, as well as trophies and awards. What are your goals from here? I feel like as an attacker, it’s not a secret: you’re there to make and score the goals. But I also want to become a better footballer. I’m going to work as hard as possible every day to become the best version of me. Where that’s

going to take me, it’s difficult to say. I could get unlucky and get an injury tomorrow and be out, or get lucky and score a hat-trick. It’s football, so it’s difficult to say, but obviously I want to push every day and now I have the Euros in the summer as well, which is a big experience for me as the first big tournament with the national team. Aoife Mannion suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury very soon after you came here and that’s something you’ve experienced in the past. What would your advice be to her? I don’t wish an injury like that, an ACL, on my worst enemy. Aoife is working so hard. When I had my recent quad injury, we were training together and she’s very strong. I’m really impressed with her. Injuries are a part of football. I think my injury [Signe suffered an ACL injury in June 2019 that kept her out for a year] showed me how much I actually wanted to play football and how much it meant to me. Of course, I would rather not have had it but I’m kind of happy I did as well because it taught me a lot about myself and the way I look at football and how much I enjoy playing football today. I also saw it ⊲ Manchester United Women v Chelsea Women 25 15

“WE PLAY TO BE IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS WHERE THERE’S EVERYTHING TO PLAY FOR. WE’RE GOING TO GO OUT THERE AND GIVE ALL WE HAVE” as a possibility to become stronger and to be better in some of the areas it might be difficult to improve while you’re training every day and playing many games. So it’s just about trying to be positive and using it in a good way to become stronger, so when you come back to the pitch, you’re even better than before. I don’t even have to tell Aoife that because she’s already so strong mentally and is doing so well. I’m really impressed with her. What are your passions outside of football? Maybe you discovered some when you were injured... When I was injured, I trained so much and had so much stuff to do at the club, that I just went home to sleep! I think if you ask Aoife, she’s kind of the same. But I like to hang out with friends and family, eat nice food, and go out into nature. We don’t have mountains in Denmark, it’s a flat country, so I love to go into the mountains. And you’re part of a project that helps young girls in Uganda. Could you explain a bit about that? Yes, it’s an organisation called Dear Football in Uganda and, for many years, it has helped boys with an academy where they go to school, train for football and have a character programme as well. A couple of years ago,

they asked if I wanted to be a part of it as well, to get more girls into the academy. It was a no-brainer for me. Everybody should have the opportunity to play football. Football has taught me so many lessons in life and taught me such good values, so for the girls in Uganda to get that is only fair. The current campaign gets signed shirts from players and we put them on auction. The money goes directly to the girls to help get more girls into the academy. I think it’s beautiful. One thing is now, but it’s also making the girls ready to go out into society and become leaders later on and, in that way, help even more people. When we collected the money last time, two months later there were six girls in the academy and I was FaceTiming them. You really feel the difference you make, and the way they look at life is special and inspiring for me. Right, we’ve got four games left and 12 points to play for. How are you and the squad feeling – excited? We play football to be in a situation like this where there’s everything to play for. We’re going to go out there and give all we have. Right now, it’s Brighton, and during the week we’ve recovered, prepared and now we’ll do whatever it takes to win. We have to focus on what we need to do in this game. It’s going to be exciting. ●

THE VISITORS

BRIGHTON Having rediscovered their early-season form, Powell’s Seagulls have a real chance of securing another top-half finish with four games to play...

Kaagman (second from right) takes the acclaim after putting Brighton 2-0 up away to West Ham last Sunday

The current campaign has been something of a rollercoaster for Brighton but the Seagulls are flying again to eye up a second successive sixth-place finish in the WSL. Positivity oozes from every pore of Hope Powell’s bright young side, which moved into its dedicated training facility in September, on the back of another encouraging campaign in 2020/21. September coincided with Brighton topping the table two games into this season, and they were still in third by mid-November after a 1-0 defeat of Leicester – watched by 3,566 fans at the Amex Stadium – secured the East Sussex side’s fifth win from their opening seven games. Unfortunately, a worrying run of one point (a goalless draw with Chelsea) from their next seven league games banished any outside hopes of Champions League qualification by mid-February, but last Sunday’s defeat of

28

West Ham was Brighton’s third win in their previous four games, resulting in them leapfroging the Hammers back into sixth. Only league leaders Chelsea had beaten West Ham on their own patch this season before Brighton’s 2-0 win at Victoria Road seven days ago, but Aileen Wheelan’s third-minute strike set the platform for silky Dutch midfielder Inessa Kaagman to seal the deal late on. “It was a really good performance from back to front,” said Powell. “We don’t score too many early goals so [to do so] gave us confidence and I was actually a bit disappointed we didn’t score one or two more in the first half.” Confidence is certainly back. After preferring a back three either side of Christmas, Powell has reverted to a 4-2-3-1 formation, which makes the most of playmaker Kaagman’s supreme technical quality and pass-picking ability in tight areas, safe in the knowledge Irish midfield

MANAGER: HOPE POWELL One of the most respected names in the women’s game, Powell has been central to Brighton’s evolution. A gifted 66-cap midfielder as a player, at the age of 31 she became the youngest person to manage any England national team (and the first woman to be awarded the UEFA Pro Licence) after taking charge of the Lionesses in 1998, remaining in the post until 2013. Since taking the reins at Brighton in 2017, she’s overseen the team turning professional and establishing itself in the WSL, with her people management and coaching acumen highly prized at the club.

BRAZIL

“SIXTH WOULD BE A BETTER ACHIEVEMENT [THAN IN ’20/21] BECAUSE THE STANDARD IS BETTER”– HOPE POWELL anchor Megan Connolly provides excellent cover. Up top, former Arsenal striker Danielle Carter has dovetailed impressively with Ellie Brazil since joining from Reading last summer – they like to switch between centre-forward and left-wing positions to make themselves hard to mark. Brighton’s star performers this season, however, lie in a defence which has kept seven WSL clean sheets – only Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City have more – with Finnish full-back Emma Koivisto shining throughout. The 27-year-old has appeared in each of Brighton’s 22 games so far this term and has registered more blocks than any other WSL player. In attack, meanwhile, the buccaneering Koivisto’s four goals puts her level with Kayleigh Green as their joint-top scorer in 2021/22, which is no mean feat for a full-back. Versatile England U23 defender Maya Le Tissier, still 19, is one for the future.

1991 The year the current team was founded. Prior to that they were known as Brighton GPO, reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1976, before linking up with the men’s team in the early ’90s.

6th Last season was their best-ever finish in the Women’s Super League, having finished ninth in both 2018/19 – the Seagulls’ inaugural campaign in the top division – and 2019/20.

1/18 Powell’s side have drawn just one of their 18 WSL games to date this season – and what a point it was, to deny Chelsea victory in January, having been the only side to beat the Blues last season.

Goalkeeper Megan Walsh provides the bedrock of that mean defence – no WSL stopper has made more saves this season than the 27-year-old, who recently made her senior debut for the Republic of Ireland and has arguably been Brighton’s player of the season. “She’s been excellent and has kept us in a lot of games this season,” says Powell. “I’d rather she didn’t have as much to do in some of our games, though.” The manager will be hopeful that Walsh recovers from the illness that saw her miss last weekend’s defeat of West Ham if Brighton are to maintain their resurgence. “Sixth again this season would be a better achievement [than in 2020/21] because the standard of the league is better,” added boss Powell last Sunday. “We showed today that we can get results away from home and play well.”
