WHAT’S INSIDE

COME ON YOU REDS! It’s a final home outing for Marc Skinner’s United, with nothing less than three points the aim as we go up against Olli Harder’s Hammers in the WSL. There’s plenty going on inside today’s programme, including a candid interview with Jade Moore (p14), a graphical study of our games here at LSV as we hit a half-century (p24), plus all the action from our recent fixtures (p11). One of those results was tough to take, but don’t forget, strange scorelines happen all the time in this game we love – especially at this stage of the season – so let’s keep the faith!

HEAD COACH’S COLUMN

MARC SKINNER In his final column of the season, the boss salutes the team’s progress in 2021/22, while acknowledging his Reds need to be more ruthless to reach the next level... Hello and welcome to Leigh for our final home game of the season against West Ham. To put it simply: we’ve got two really important matches left to play and we’re aiming to finish as well as we possibly can. We were all frustrated after the Aston Villa match, but what a great compliment to us that teams are now celebrating draws against us. We created more than enough to win the game, but it’s now about converting our chances and turning those fine margins that have been against us a few times this season in our favour. I don’t think we were ever in danger of losing that game, but we’ve got to be more clinical, more ruthless and that will come as this team continues to mature. Maturing takes time and though it can be largely intangible in a sense that you can’t really record maturity in stats, we can measure it in our decision-making. I’ve seen us maturing throughout the season in different ways. In our defensive displays we’re limiting our opponents to very few opportunities. In attack, we’re creating really good spaces, and our movement is really starting to kick into a different gear. Now we want to make sure there’s maturity in our finishing. We’ve had conversations about that as a group; it’s not just about the technical finish, it’s the psychology of the finish too. There are so many different options for a player in every position and there will

04

always be opportunities missed. It’s as much about how we react in those moments as it is about anything else. We won’t wallow in the misery of missing chances, we’ll get back up and go again. That’s what mature players do. They don’t worry about the noise around them. I’m proud of the team for how far we’ve come and excited by the improvements we will make together. We’ll need that maturity, strength of character and intelligence when we take on West Ham. They try to force you into mistakes and are energetic in their one-on-one battles, and I like that about them. For us, I want us to match their energy. When they have possession, we have to use our brains and lock off their options. When we have possession, we need to express ourselves and make the most of any spaces they afford us across the pitch. Finally, before our last match of the season next week, I want to thank you wholeheartedly for your support this season. For being real, for being human, for being patient with us through the ups and the downs. You are a special group, those who’ve been with us from the start as well as the new faces we’ve seen join us, too. Without you we wouldn’t be anywhere near the kind of team we want to be. Enjoy the game and we’ll see you soon!

POST-MATCH REFLECTIONS Manager Marc Skinner and captain Katie Zelem bring the squad and all the backroom staff together on the pitch at Banks’s Stadium seven days ago, as they assess a tough 90 minutes in which we couldn’t quite breach the Aston Villa goal, despite having 62 per cent possession and 18 shots. Aston Villa keeper Sian Rogers – making her first WSL league start for 596 days – was in inspired form as Carla Ward’s hosts took a point, and the result leaves the Reds needing a bit of luck to go our way if we are to finish in the top three ahead of Manchester City. Yet the message from the gaffer and the skipper to the group was clear: we keep going, we stay United, and we keep battling for every last point – at home to West Ham today, then away to Chelsea next Sunday.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! Under-21s lift another trophy after beating the Blues Wednesday was another red letter day for United Women’s Under-21s, as they clinched the FA WSL Academy League National title after beating Chelsea 3-1 at Altrincham’s Moss Lane in the second leg, and 6-2 on aggregate following a repeat scoreline a week earlier away to the Londoners. Two goals from lively forward Keira Barry – who has been part of the senior squad this season – and a cracking third from the prolific Megan Sofield, saw Charlotte Healy’s Reds ease to victory. It rounded off a highly

impressive campaign for the young group, who as well as finishing 2021/22 with the Northern and National FA WSL Academy League titles, also picked up the WSL Academy Cup trophy at St George’s Park in early March. Head coach Healy couldn’t be any prouder of every member of her squad, and she tweeted after Wednesday’s win: ‘Huge congratulations to this special group of players. Genuinely is a pleasure to work with them every day. It’s not easy being an Academy player, but they’ve worked so

incredibly hard. A season full of great experiences – huge thanks to my brilliant team of staff too.’ While every footballer loves picking up a medal, the priority for Manchester United’s younger teams remains, in the words of Healy, that the Academy experience “has a positive influence and adds value to their lives, both on and off the pitch”. Judging by the smiles on the faces of everyone in a red shirt at Moss Lane four days ago, there’s no shortage of positivity around this gifted group. Congratulations to everyone within the U21s.

INTERNATIONAL PRIDE FOR REDS

A busy international break last month saw United’s Ella Toone hit her second Lionesses hat-trick in a 10-0 World Cup qualifying win away to North Macedonia, with Alessia Russo and Katie Zelem coming on as second-half subs. Days later, Toone notched her 10th England goal (above) in a 5-0 win over Northern Ireland at Windsor Park, as Mary Earps played 90 minutes for Sarina Wiegman’s side. There was a United face-off at Hampden Park, as Ona Batlle’s Spain beat Martha Thomas’s Scotland to reach the World Cup. Elsewhere in the qualifiers, Hayley Ladd played 90 minutes, while Carrie Jones was brought on from the bench, as Wales won 3-0 away to Kazakhstan; while Norway won 2-1 at home to Poland, with Maria Thorisdottir playing the whole game, and Vilde Boe Risa introduced at half-time. In the friendlies, Jackie Groenen opened the goals in the Netherlands’ 5-1 win v South Africa with a blistering strike.

MATCH ROUND-UP

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT... No thriller v Villa as we take a point Sunday 24 April, Banks’s Stadium, WSL ASTON VILLA 0 UNITED 0

Match reports Matthew Holt

The Reds were held to a goalless draw against Aston Villa last Sunday evening, which saw us reclaim third spot in the WSL from Manchester City, but damaged our bid for Champions League qualification. In what was a cagey affair at the Banks’s Stadium in Walsall, Ella Toone was presented with an early chance to break the deadlock, with Villa keeper Sian Rogers forced to deny her. Martha Thomas was then gifted with a golden opportunity at the beginning of the second 45 minutes, with her right-footed effort going agonisingly close, after Leah Galton had done brilliantly to cross. Toone was the first United player to test Rogers early on, as the England international managed to sneak her shot away following some clever build-up from the Reds. After nine minutes, Rogers again thwarted United, as the 23-year-old denied Thomas when the forward appeared to be clean through on goal. Toone produced a follow-up effort but her attempt was cleared. Villa began to grow into the game, and forward Emily Gielnik gave Mary Earps her first action in United’s goal. Alessia Russo and Toone then linked up cleverly with 35 minutes gone, but the Reds’ top scorer blasted her shot at defender Anita Asante, who cleared once more. Batlle and her fellow Reds fought to the end, but couldn’t get the breakthrough they craved

United should have opened the scoring just two minutes into the second half, as Galton burst forward down the right before squaring for Thomas, with her goal-bound effort flashing wide of the target. With tension beginning to rise as the hour mark passed by, the Reds had another opportunity but Toone’s header couldn’t quite trouble Rogers. Alisha Lehmann’s free-kick from 25 yards out again was easily collected by Earps, with Skinner’s side having to work hard in their own bid to find the game’s opening goal. Thomas turned provider with 15 minutes remaining, as she lay the ball into the path of Toone during a swift counterattack. Rogers pushed her effort out for a corner, which again come to no avail. United substitute Lucy Staniforth threatened to open the deadlock with just minutes remaining, as she battled well to win the ball and win the Reds a corner. As the game edged ever closer to its conclusion, Katie Zelem tested her luck from range, but the score remained level and the spoils were shared on a frustrating day that put City in pole position to take the third and final European spot, on account of their game in hand – at home to Brighton yesterday. Boe Risa wins the ball as United push for a second goal

Sunday 3 April, Leigh Sports Village, WSL UNITED 1 (Galton 68) BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION WOMEN 0 United maintained the push for Champions League qualification as Leah Galton got the only goal in a 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the team’s first April fixture, played here at Leigh Sports Village. The Reds’ first chance of the game came through midfielder Jackie Groenen after just five minutes, as our Dutch no.14’s long-range effort from 25 yards out flew over the crossbar. Ella Toone had a big chance for the Reds when she latched on to Ona Batlle’s pinpoint long ball, but her stabbed effort was parried away by Seagulls stopper Katie Startup. At the other end, Hannah Blundell had to be alert to clear away a dangerous low ball from Felicity Gibbons, before Hayley Ladd did enough to prevent Julia Zigiotti Olme converting at the back post. A late penalty appeal at the end of the first 45 minutes rounded off the action. Referee Abigail Byrne waved away Martha Thomas’s claims that she had been fouled on the edge of the area. With chances continuing to be at a premium, Alessia Russo was next to go close as the second half began when she met Batlle’s deep cross with a header, only for Startup to gather at the second attempt. The decisive strike came on 68 minutes when Toone slipped the ball through to Galton, whose low effort was too hot for Startup to handle and squirmed into the far corner of the net.

12

Having finally made the breakthrough, United almost extended the lead when substitute Kirsty Hanson danced into the area, moments after her introduction on 70 minutes. The United no.18 came close to finding a killer blow, but the visitors eventually foiled her attempts on goal. Shortly afterwards, Thomas grazed the outside of the post as the score remained 1-0, despite the Reds’ dominance of possession. Thomas had another chance shortly afterwards, but this time a combination of Startup’s save and a last-gasp Victoria Williams clearance denied the United no.9. It made for a nervy finish for the 1,524 supporters in the stands, but Skinner’s side held firm to pick up a big three points heading into the final international break of the 2021/22 campaign. Galton guides the ball brilliantly – as she did for her decisive goal

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

#4 MOORE 14 07 Manchester United Women v Brighton Hove

JADE MOORE

The experienced January signing gives detailed insight into recovering from a career-threatening injury, the mindset needed for success in the WSL, and why she’s so optimistic about the future of the women’s game... Interview: Harry Robinson

Let’s start off with last week’s draw at Villa. What are your feelings towards that game and the result? It’s an obvious opportunity missed with the points we’ve dropped. The performance was there, but it’s just about the cutting edge, being ruthless and clinical in front of goal. We had a 10-minute flurry in the first half, and if we’d scored one of those chances, the whole game looks different. I think there are massive learnings from that game, and our motivation is going to grow from that. How was the mood on the journey back from the game? I’d love to comment but I didn’t travel back on the coach. I live in Nottinghamshire at the minute, so I’ll make my way on my own for these games. So, I wasn’t with them, but I can imagine it wasn’t a happy coach. Everyone was disappointed. We’ve put ourselves in such a strong position that a draw against Villa where we just didn’t convert our chances now feels like a loss. That’s a credit to the girls for getting into this position, but now it’s about learning from these moments and using that to fuel the fire for the two big games we’ve got coming up. Does having recently returned from a long-term injury put things in perspective a little bit? Do you think it’s helped you recover from frustrating results quicker? Yeah, completely. I think when you’ve been in the game for such a long time, you understand that it’s the trial and tribulations of football – it’s just what happens. You manage to pick yourself up and dust yourself off pretty quickly because I think one of the biggest things you learn in your career is not allowing yourself to get too low or too high. Football and sport have a way of grounding you very quickly. If you do get too high, it has a way of bringing you back down, and if you do get too low, it can become a bit of a dark place and you can struggle to get out of that. So that’s something you do learn to adapt to. I feel like when you’re younger playing sport, every game has so much pressure on it, and so much emphasis on what happens – being two or three games, end of the season, Champions League places – it becomes a heavy

duty to carry. I’ve been in a situation at Birmingham where we lost the league by one point [in 2014], and I got knocked out of a semi-final in a Women’s World Cup [in 2015]. We were going to the final of a World Cup, and we scored an own goal and that strips it away from you. So, I think knowing that, having those experiences of knowing how quickly things can be flipped on their head, you know that come tomorrow, you’ve just got to refocus. That’s something Marc speaks about a lot: focus on the process, not the overarching result. Is that mentality something you can offer the squad, too? Yeah, absolutely. Experience comes through evidence and we’re a very young team, so the evidence that’s put in front of us is not a thick folder like with other older players in the league; they will have experienced a lot more ups and downs. The beauty of trying to focus on the process is that the pressure doesn’t build, so you’re not carrying external factors into each game. It is really difficult. If you’ve not been in this position before, you do look ahead all the time. We’re in a position where we’re saying the right things, but it’s about living and breathing them. The learning we go through this season will help us next season. The girls will understand what that process of actually taking each game looks like in a better lens. It’s quite easy to say, ‘we’re only focusing on West Ham this week’ but if you’re truly honest, how many are thinking ‘if we don’t win, that’s the Champions League gone’? ⊲

“ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS YOU LEARN IS NOT ALLOWING YOURSELF TO GET TOO LOW OR TOO HIGH – WHEN YOU’RE YOUNG, EVERY GAME HAS SO MUCH PRESSURE” 15

Completely. It’s reality v expectation, isn’t it? Sometimes with football, it does send you a curveball. So, if you are overachieving, you’ve just got to grab it and run with it as fast as you can. It changes season to season dramatically. And if we miss out on the Champions League this year, how tough is it going to be to get Champions League next year, because everyone strengthens again? That’s why the manager makes us focus on the process, because that’s the only thing we can control. We can’t control what happens next season, we can’t control what happens at the end of the season, we can’t control what happens next week, but we can control how we prepare for the next game and what we do within the game. Part of that process is trying to enjoy the journey as well, which I think is really important when you get older, which you forget about when you’re younger and you’re so het up on emotion. Two dropped points becomes quite heavy. It

feels like a loss. But sometimes I look back on my career and think, ‘how many years did I spend not enjoying football because of the pressures or the type of the mentality you think you need to have to be successful?’ Fitness-wise, how have you been feeling since returning to action in March? I feel like I’ve been getting into a really good place. I’ve got a little ankle niggle at the minute, which is a little bit frustrating, but it’s not detrimental to playing games, and that’s the nature of coming back from a long-term injury. I feel like I’m in a good place. I think by the end of the season I’m going to be starting to hit the ground running so I think my off-season is going to be pretty pivotal to how I come back next season. I’m in a good place, my knee feels really good. I say knee because it’s the closest thing, but it was ITBS [Iliotibial band syndrome], the lateral knee. They call it ‘runners’ disease’. It’s an overuse injury, really, but it had become that chronic that there was just no way of sorting it out without going under the knife. It’s been the worst injury I’ve ever had in my career. You said you had considered retirement. You must be incredibly proud of yourself now, being a Manchester United player instead of a retired player? Completely. I think the reason why the retirement was questioned – and questioned over and over again – was no one was giving me any answers with my injury. A lot of

JADE MOORE

Jade’s loan spell in Spain in 2020 saw her line up in the Champions League with Atletico – an experience dgdgd the midfielder would love to repeat with the Reds

“I’M IN A GOOD PLACE, MY KNEE FEELS GOOD. I THINK MY OFF-SEASON IS GOING TO BE PRETTY PIVOTAL TO HOW I COME BACK NEXT SEASON” the answers were, ‘there’s nothing we can do about it’. So, we either need to carry on rehab-ing it and hope it settles, or miraculously it’s going to disappear. But the pain I was in was affecting me every day. I was living in America but I couldn’t even walk outside, I was struggling walking up and down the stairs. The things it was starting to impact on was day-to-day life. A lot of my team-mates and coaching staff were saying, ‘can you not just play through it?’ Being a pretty new player to that team [Orlando Pride], the type of person and player I am... that hurt me. The amount of injuries and things that I’ve played through in my time; if they knew me properly as a player, they’d know that’s not right. If I’m not playing, there’s something wrong. They didn’t know me well enough to understand that, which hurt really. I wish I could have just strapped it up and cracked on, but I couldn’t even walk up the stairs, so how was I meant to go and play a 90-minute match against some of the best athletes in the world? Do you think football has a problem with encouraging players to go through the pain barrier too regularly? I think what happens is when it becomes results-driven,

which most competitive sports are, it becomes ‘can we get you through the game?’ But I don’t know the answer to that question, to be honest. I think it’s probably different from club to club and it depends on how big your squad depth is. And that was a big reason for me choosing this club. The club’s only getting bigger, I’m not going to be asked to play every single game there is in the league – it’s going to be a much better fit for me where I am in my career now; a time to savour my years playing and give me a bit more longevity in the game. If you’re carrying on playing for a team who are just going to flog you out because they need you to get through the minutes, there’s always going to be a breaking point at some point. So this was one of the reasons I now chose a bigger club, because if you look at my career, I often chose clubs a level below because one of the things I never wanted to do was sacrifice playing time, because that’s where I thought I learnt most of my lessons. So one of the reasons I chose United is that it’s a club that plays possession-based football, so it’s not going to be so off-the-ball where your body’s getting battered week-in, week-out, and we’re going to have a bigger squad depth ⊲ Manchester United Women v Chelsea Women 17 15

Skinner already knew about Jade’s many qualities from their time working together at both Birmingham City and Orlando Pride

“I’M REALLY THANKFUL MARC’S PUT HIS TRUST IN ME. HE UNDERSTANDS THE VALUE THAT I CAN BRING AND NOW I WANT TO REPAY THAT FAITH” so you’re not so heavily relied upon. The fluidity that the squad depth here brings, that ticks a box for me. It might not work out that way, I might end up playing every game! That’s not my choice, that’s for the manager to decide, but you know what I’m saying!

to make me feel like a footballer again, as daft as that sounds! He’s shown his trust in me by giving me chances in games; I think he understands the value that I can bring and now I want to repay that faith, by getting fit and starting to be able to give him more of me on the pitch.

It must have been satisfying to make it back in time to come off the bench for the game at Old Trafford? Yeah, definitely. When I joined and saw that game on the calendar, it was a little bit like, ‘ooh, let’s see if that works in my plan on my return to play’. But I think where I’m at right now, it wasn’t a big target to hit because as long as I make it back at some point this season, in a good place, feeling good, the injury being settled, having no problems – that’s my biggest win right now. For me, the performances and where we’re playing right now isn’t my pinnacle. It’s getting my body back and feeling like me again. Because when you’ve been out for so long and you come back to a league that’s in progress, you start training again and you know you’re capable but it’s also about whether your body is capable. You have to go through that psychological battle of fighting the demons off coming back from an injury; of asking ‘is my body going to be able to handle it?’ Right now, I’m in a really good position. I’ve got trust in my body and it’s about progressing from here. I’m really thankful Marc’s put his trust in me. I’ve managed to play some U21s minutes, just

As for the WSL, it may be too early to say, but how have you found being back in it so far after a while away? As you say, it’s difficult to comment yet, but I’ve always enjoyed how competitive the WSL is. That’s why it’s one of the best leagues in the world. The standard is growing, and off the pitch, the money being injected, and playing in stadiums makes a massive difference. It looks like professional football now. Sky Sports coming in has been one of the best things that could have happened to the league. Clubs now are owning the women’s side and saying, ‘yes, come and play at our stadium, because we’re all under one banner’ and that’s made a huge improvement to women’s football. Women’s football has always been accessible, and I think that’s one of the nuggets it’s always held. And I think what’s different now is it’s accessible but within the realms of it looking like a professional sport. And what I’ve found really interesting is walking past a pub or a bar and they have Sky Sports on. And they leave it on all day, so women’s football, as much as people in there might not choose to watch it, it’s put in people’s eye lines. You can’t buy that exposure. ●

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

KATIE ZELEM The skipper has real appreciation for the support the team’s had in 2021/22, and she’s hoping to see some more season highlights over the next week... I can’t believe we’ve arrived at our final home game. We have two big games to go and we’re completely focused and determined to finish 2021/22 on a high. It was a frustrating result at Villa. We had our eyes set on the three points and we knew how important it was. We’ve mentioned this before but it’s about being clinical, which we’ve shown on occasion throughout the season, but a few times we’ve fallen a bit short on putting our chances away. A few draws should have been wins. It’s all about staying concentrated for the whole 90 minutes. For the majority of the draws this season – Spurs and Arsenal spring to mind – we were actually 1-0 up, too. That period between 80-90 minutes, right up to the full-time whistle, we have to make sure we’re managing the game well and finishing strong. Today we face a really organised team in West Ham. They’re aggressive and have some quality players. We will need to focus on doing the basics well, though we also want to put in a quality performance you will enjoy. It has been such an incredible season playing in front of fans again and on behalf of the team and staff, I’d like to say a huge thank you. You’ve been brilliant throughout the entire season. We’ve had some ups and downs, but you’ve always been there for us, travelling home and away and it’s something we really appreciate.

For me, our team highlight was beating Arsenal in the Conti Cup. We had a tough run of games to even progress through to the knockouts, so for us, it was a huge win in that quarter-final. Our cup win at Arsenal set the standard for the team That performance showed the quality of our team and how we can compete against the best. My personal highlight was scoring in our win at Old Trafford. Everton have always been tricky opponents so to be able to get three points most importantly, but also to put in such a good team performance and showcase what we can do to over 20,000 people, was amazing. I’m sure we’ll see and hear plenty of you in London as we finish the season away at Chelsea – a superb team still battling for the title. The result could be huge for both teams and we’re excited to challenge ourselves against them again. We haven’t got the results we wanted against Chelsea so far. Hopefully we can win today and next weekend is a game to turn it around.

MU FOUNDATION

SPREADING THE MESSAGE There’s a star-studded fundraising fixture at Old Trafford this month, with a couple of players helping to promote some of the worthy causes Big names including Dimitar Berbatov, Diego Forlan, Paul Scholes and Patrice Evra will once again pull on the famous red shirt at Old Trafford later this month to take on a team of Liverpool legends in a match that will raise vital funds for the Foundation’s community initiatives. In the build-up to the ‘Legends of the North’ match, two other returning Reds have been assisting some of these said projects, with John O’Shea and Wes Brown – a duo very familiar with great moments against Liverpool – offering their time to help raise awareness of the Foundation’s work. O’Shea went first, visiting the Street Reds project at Great Academy Ashton, where he joined in with a football session. “To be associated with Manchester United Foundation is amazing for me – the work that they do is fantastic,” he said. “The opportunities it gives kids to improve their fitness and health, but also just a chance to create a bond with United, can be crucial to their development. I’ve enjoyed helping to spread that message and getting involved with the sessions the Foundation coaches

O’Shea speaks to the Street Reds participants, with Wes (below) putting in a busy shift at the Red Café

have been running. I wanted to see first-hand where the funds from the legends game will go, so to see how it actually affects families and communities really brings it home.” Similarly enthusiastic was John’s former team-mate Wes Brown, who visited Old Trafford recently to meet participants on the Foundation’s traineeships programme. The scheme gives young people the opportunity to experience life working in a variety of industries, both at Old Trafford and at businesses in the surrounding areas. Never one to shirk a challenge, Wes joined the students serving customers in the Megastore and Red Café, before joining in with a football session on the Apollo pitch outside

the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand. “It was so much fun to be involved in and great to see the young lads enjoying themselves,” Wes told us. “It can be so difficult at their age to decide what they want to do, so to be able to try out these potential career paths will be so beneficial for them. “These kind of things are only made possible because of support for the Foundation from fans around the world, which is why the Legends of the North game is so important. My message for fans: get your tickets, you’ll have a great day!” United will be led by Bryan Robson and Andrew Cole, and all proceeds from the match will go to the Foundation’s work with young people across Greater Manchester. THE VISITORS

WEST HAM UNITED The visitors are well placed for a top-half finish after their latest win, with the Hammers continuing to embrace their manager’s hard-working ethos

Celebration time as Danish midfielder Emma Snerle gives her side the lead at Reading in the Hammers’ previous outing

When Olli Harder replaced Matt Beard in December 2020, the New Zealander’s brief was simple – reduce the gap between West Ham and the top teams in the WSL. Disciplined, hard to break down and blessed with real quality in wide areas, the Hammers are the epitome of what the 38-year-old coach demands from his teams and are among the sides fighting for a top-half finish this term. Their injury-time equaliser from Grace Fisk in today’s reverse fixture against United at Dagenham in mid-March was symptomatic of the never-say-die spirit and supreme fitness which seeps from every pore of Harder’s squad. “We want players who are going to get their head down and if I’m not going to put in 60, 70, 80 hours a week, then how can I ask my athletes to go and run for me?” said Harder, whose high-pressing system is as much

28

about what West Ham can do without the ball as with it. “Off the ball, it’s more of an attitude thing, so in the modern game the high intensity, the pressing, the running, are essential to create opportunities.” Though the Hammers have struggled to maintain the consistency which brought just two defeats from their opening 11 WSL fixtures, they remain a match for any team on their day. It should come as no surprise that the London club reached this season’s Women’s FA Cup semi-finals, falling to Manchester City two weeks ago in a spirited display, with Harder’s side bouncing back last weekend with a 2-1 away victory at Reading – Emma Snerle and Yui Hasegawa getting the visitors’ goals. Under Harder, the back three is key. West Ham began the 2021/22 campaign in a 3-4-3 system but have tended to favour a 3-5-2 formation since late January to pair

THE VISITORS

MANAGER: OLLI HARDER A former goalkeeper in his native New Zealand’s top flight, Harder began his coaching career working with youth academies in the US before taking charge of Norwegian side Klepp IL in 2017. He worked wonders, guiding the club – which included Maria Thorisdottir – from relegation candidates to a first top-four finish for more than 20 years in his first term, and bettered it with second and third-place finishes in the following two campaigns. After a brief spell as assistant manager at second-tier men’s side Sandnes Ulf, Harder joined West Ham in December 2020.

“WE’VE TAKEN A BIG STEP FORWARD THIS SEASON. I HAVE TO GIVE CREDIT TO THE PLAYERS”– OLLI HARDER Tameka Yallop with Adriana Leon in a highly mobile front two. With Claudia Walker, who has scored six goals in all competitions this season, an excellent option from the bench, they have quality in abundance up front. Left-wing-back Katerina Svitkova, meanwhile, is arguably West Ham’s best creative outlet. No WSL player has dribbled past more opponents this season than the 26-year-old Czech international, her supreme close control and ability to get up and down the left flank highly prized by all at the club. In central midfield, Hasegawa (right) and six-goal Iceland international Dagny Brynjarsdottir offer a blend of experience, defensive diligence and attacking flair. 1991 The year the current Hammers side was formed, with the Londoners competing in the Women’s FA Cup for the first time in the 1995/96 season.

2018/19 West Ham’s most impressive achievement to date came three seasons ago, when they reached the Women’s FA Cup final for the first time in their history, before losing 3-0 to Manchester City.

2-0 The Hammers had more luck against City in the WSL earlier this season, winning 2-0 at City’s Academy Stadium, with their other 2021/22 WSL victories coming against Leicester, Spurs, Everton, Villa, Birmingham and Reading.

division’s top five have conceded fewer goals this season. Captain and former England international Gilly Flaherty is a defensive rock, who last month became the first West Ham player to make a century of appearances for the club, and is flanked by the aggressive Hawa Cissoko and set-piece threat Fisk. With two games of the WSL remaining, Harder’s side are on course for another positive campaign. “I said we needed to close the gap to the top teams in our division and be more consistent with our performances against them,” he said recently. “We’ve taken a big step forward this season and reached the Women’s FA Cup semi-final. I have to give credit to the players and the staff for what we’ve done this year.”
