WORLD CUP JOY FOR REDS STARS
United players had reasons to celebrate in the recent international break, with both England and Scotland sealing a place at next summer’s Women’s World Cup. Reds’ skipper Alex Greenwood played the full 90 minutes as Phil Neville’s Lionesses beat Wales 3-0 (right) to confirm their place in France, while Lizzie Arnot was part of the Scotland side that held on for a 2-1 win over Albania, taking the nation to a first ever World Cup.

RECORD CROWD A big thank you to everyone who attended our first home outing, against Reading. While the Reds were left d isappointed with the result, the crowd of 4,835 was a record for the Continental Tyres Cup – and more than double the number who attended last year’s final! Let’s hope it’s a number we can raise even higher as our inaugural season progresses.

THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN
We’re staying grounded after the Villa game, with tonight presenting a different challenge
G
ood evening and welcome to Leigh Sports Village. I’d like to start by saying a massive thank you to everyone who came to the Reading game here. I really hope we did enough that day for you fans to want to come back, as we want you with us on this journey. I thought we played some excellent football on the day, and were really unlucky not to take something from a very good Reading side. Our last game was a very different story, of course, but I want to highlight that Aston Villa was one fixture in a long league campaign, and we are keeping our feet firmly on the floor. The relentlessness of our scoring was impressive, certainly – it would have been easy to take our foot off the gas in the second half – but I must be honest and say we weren’t pleased with our start to the game, nor the last 15 minutes. A 12-0 scoreline means nothing in the long term, and we need to keep working hard. One thing I was really happy about was to see Jess Sigsworth get on the scoresheet, because she’d had a frustrating couple of games and she’d been working so hard. Jess was one of 10 players who hadn’t been away on international duty with the different
04 Manchester United Women v Sheffield United Women
age groups the previous week. That allowed us to work on fine details with the girls that remained, and their attitude and application was brilliant. Jess got her rewards for her unbelievable work ethic, and strikers need confidence, so for her to get five goals will hopefully set her on her way this season. I’m always big on ‘the 21’ – it’s the whole squad’s hard work on the training pitch that enables the starting XI to produce – but I have to say Kirsty Hanson was exceptional against Villa, and I thought Martha Harris did really well on her debut, pushing forward from her full-back position and winning a penalty. I’m sure that tonight will be a very different challenge for us as we welcome Carla Ward and her Sheffield United side. It will be more physical, and they will make it difficult for us, but we need to stay true to our principles as we look to raise our levels even more for a big few days, with a tight turnaround between tonight and London Bees at the weekend. Enjoy the match.
I REALLY HOPE WE DID ENOUGH AGAINST READING FOR YOU FANS TO WANT TO COME BACK, AS WE WANT YOU WITH US ON THIS JOURNEY

IT DOZEN’T GET MUCH BETTER! Incredible 12-goal haul to start league season kicks off our match round-up... ASTON VILLA LADIES 0 UNITED WOMEN 12 CHAMPIONSHIP | BOLDMERE ST MICHAELS | SCORERS: JAMES (10, 23), SIGSWORTH (25, 33, 35, 49, 62), ZELEM (28 PEN), HANSON (55, 59), GREEN (66), TOONE (68) | ATT: 1,165
The Reds began the Championship campaign in devastating fashion, hitting Aston Villa Ladies for 12 at Boldmere St Michaels FC. Jess Sigsworth scored five goals, with braces for Lauren James and Kirsty Hanson, while Katie Zelem, Mollie Green and Ella Toone added to the scoreline as the Reds, wearing pink, ran riot in the West Midlands. United took the lead after 10 minutes when James’s effort from inside the box was deflected past Villa goalkeeper Sian Rogers. James added a second to her tally on 23 minutes as she unleashed a clean effort from outside the area, which was quickly followed by Sigsworth’s first goal in United colours. The referee awarded a penalty to United three minutes later after Martha Harris was brought down. Zelem made no mistake from the spot: 4-0. Sigsworth then weaved her way through the Villa defence to rocket a shot into the top-left corner to make it five, before coolly slotting home from close range after a good work from Hanson. United scored a seventh goal soon after the break when half-time substitute Mollie Green delivered a brilliantly weighted ball for Sigsworth to tap into the net. Hanson (right) caused Villa constant problems down the wing, and she got in on the act with a brace: the Scot rounded the goalkeeper to score the Reds’ eighth and then caught Rogers out at the near post to add a ninth. 06 Manchester United Women v Sheffield United Women
The home defence could do nothing to stop Sigsworth
Siobhan Chamberlain had very little to do in the United goal but she had to be on hand to deal with Jodie Hutton’s left-footed shot. With just over an hour played, Sigsworth scored her fifth and the Reds’ 10th goal as the striker compounded the hosts’ misery with a confident finish. Green hammered home a half-volleyed shot five minutes later to make it 11-0, before another substitute, Ella Toone, scored the 12th after Hanson’s shot was pushed on to the post by Rogers. It wasn’t the result we wanted for our first home game, but the performance, as well as the positivity from the stands, made it a very memorable day... Close to 5,000 fans made it to Leigh – including this group of passionate Reds
And here they come! Alex Greenwood leads the way for the hosts
United Women’s historic first home game as a professional team ended in defeat, but only after an encouraging display against experienced opponents Reading. The Reds fashioned the first chance on nine minutes, when Katie Zelem played a left-footed pass into the area and Jess Sigsworth shot just wide. Reading’s main threat, Fara Williams, took another 10 minutes to test Siobhan Chamberlain with a shot from just outside the box, before Reds forward Lizzie Arnot crossed for Sigsworth to head straight at Royals’ goalkeeper Grace Maloney. United’s Kirsty Hanson was extremely unlucky in hitting the woodwork twice for the Reds in a matter of seconds, after Alex Greenwood whipped in a cross from Zelem’s corner. As the visitors upped their game, forward Natasha Harding fired in a warning shot that Chamberlain did well to beat away at her
near post. The increasing pressure paid off for the Royals, however, when Brooke Chaplen used her strength on the ball to set up Gemma Davison for another effort saved by the United keeper, before Davison buried the rebound into the net. On 63 minutes, Reading defender Molly Bartrip saw red, picking up a second booking from referee Anthony Tankard after scything down Hanson. United continued to chase an equaliser, with Greenwood and substitute Leah Galton both stretching the Royals with good runs and crosses from the left. But when the Reds bravely threw every player forward for a final corner in injury-time, the ball broke for Davison to run into the United half and eventually slot in a killer second goal against the run of play.

hat a performance it was against Aston Villa. I took a slight knock during the international break – nothing too serious – but as a precaution I watched it from the stands. It was such a diligent display and it was nice to see so many different players get on the scoresheet. As for Jess, she’s a goalscorer through and through – she celebrated all five of her goals as if she’d just scored a last-minute winner! That result was a great end to the week, after a few of us had returned from international duty. It was nice to get the squad back together on the Friday before the Villa game, and I was delighted for the Scotland girls who had been away as well. With England and Scotland off to the World Cup, who knows, we might end up meeting each other in France next summer! Like us, tonight’s opponents Sheffield United are new to the division, and we’ve been focusing on them a lot over the past week. We didn’t have a fixture at the weekend, but we prepared as if we did, and we trained over the weekend. It was important to do that ahead of a heavy run of fixtures, with three games to play in 11 days. I have to mention our last home game, against Reading. It was just a fantastic day for the whole football club. For some of our players, that
would have been the biggest crowd they had ever played in front of, but no-one shied away from the occasion. Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of the result but we played some good football, and showed we can compete with some of this country’s top teams. While we’re not expecting a crowd quite as big this evening, a first night-fixture should make for a good atmosphere, and I hope we’ll be able to celebrate three points together at full-time.
We can all be proud of our involvement in the Reading game

“Describe myself? Loud! My backline probably would agree with that!” Our no.1 Siobhan Chamberlain on being the most experienced voice in the squad... How has the start of the season been for you, Siobhan – exciting? Definitely. We started with a win at Liverpool and every fan and player wants to beat Liverpool, so it was a good start! We’ve only been together for seven weeks but we’re really excited to have got going.
It’s the biggest club in the world, so it was an incredible opportunity. I think most female footballers, if given this opportunity, would bite your hand off. There are 21 of us and we’re privileged to start the team’s journey.

IT’S IMPORTANT FOR MYSELF AND THE OTHER OLDER PLAYERS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, TO GIVE GUIDANCE Manchester United’ but, as a young girl, you knew that potentially you couldn’t. Now this opens so many more pathways to so many young girls to say, ‘I want to go out there and I want to play for United’. Just go out there, enjoy what you’re doing and take every opportunity. Ultimately, if you’re having fun and playing football, that’s what you want. You’ve played with Casey Stoney before. How big an influence was she on bringing you to Manchester? A huge influence. I’ve got the utmost respect for Casey. She’s had a fantastic career and undoubtedly, she’ll be a fantastic manager. How will you be able to use your experience to influence the squad? It’s quite a young squad. There are a few that are a lot, lot younger than me! I’ll say I’m more experienced as opposed to older! But it’s so important for myself and the other older players 16 Manchester United Women v Sheffield United Women
to take responsibility and give guidance. We want to drive standards and to make sure everything is done in a professional way and that we can get success as early as possible. Describe yourself as a player? Loud! My backline probably would agree with that! I like to think I’m a good communicator and distributor. I think I use my experience quite well to manage games, which can perhaps often frustrate the opposition, but it’s an important part of the game. What are your goals for this season? The Championship is everyone’s goal and it’s really important that we go out there and start the season well. For us as well, cup competitions are a fantastic opportunity to test ourselves against the best teams in the country in WSL1. That’s really important. For me, England-wise, next year is a World Cup year and that’s where I want to be.

nitially formed as Sheffield United Community Ladies by Blades legend Tony Currie during the 1990s, the newly rebranded Sheffield United Women are an emerging force in the female game. Their application to join the Women’s Championship was accepted in April – the Blades competed in the fourth tier last term – and their subsequent name change is the latest evidence of their progress and ambition. The club described the switch from ‘Ladies’ to ‘Women’ as ‘representative of a modern view on language and equality’, while the team’s general manager Lee Walshaw said: “It’s another sign that we’re not standing still in our development, both on and off the field.”

A glance at the club’s impressive set-up certainly makes that clear. They boast both a development team and regional talent club, and have already produced several stars that have gone on to grace the top flight with leading clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea. A strong recruitment campaign since their promotion to the second tier also suggests they mean business. A glut of new signings rocked up at United’s Olympic Legacy Park home during the summer months, including England youth international Sam Tierney, who returns to the club where she spent her formative years, within the Blades’ regional talent club. Tierney arrived from fellow South Yorkshire outfit Doncaster Belles, who were champions of the second tier last season, and was principally attracted by the club’s ambition. “It’s exciting to be a part of something new and in an environment that is pushing to progress and challenge from the start,” said the midfielder. “It’s a club that has been a huge part of my youth development and one I hope will be able to develop me more as a player this season.” Winger Beth Merrick has also arrived from Aston Villa, while Nik Kemp and Ellie Gilliat made the short journey across the Steel City from neighbours Sheffield FC, who withdrew from the Championship in June due to financing issues. United’s season began impressively, with a 2-1 win away at Villa in the first round of the Continental Tyres League Cup. A 3-1 defeat to top-flight Bristol City in the same competition, however, followed by a 2-0 reverse to second-tier stalwarts Durham to kick off their Championship campaign, somewhat checked that initial burst of momentum.

M A N A G E R: Carla Ward

A midfield legend at cross-town side Sheffield FC Ladies, Ward was appointed Blades boss following the departure of Dan O’Hearne in January, and since their admittance to the second tier, Ward admits it’s been “the biggest challenge I’ve faced in football”. But she brings a wealth of experience from her playing days – including time spent in Spain – and believes off-season team bonding has already helped to foster the kind of team spirit that should help the Blades try to negotiate their latest step up the football pyramid.
The England U19s international burst on to the scene with Doncaster Belles in 2016. After three promising seasons, she joined the Blades during the summer. A vibrant attacking midfielder, who loves to run with the ball and put opponents on the back foot, she’s also a canny operator when it comes to sniffing out chances. One of the nation’s brightest young talents, she remains on standby for next year’s U20 World Cup and has the perfect platform to showcase her abilities as part of Ward’s energetic young side.
