The togetherness in the squad, alongside your support, is already reaping rewards

G

ood afternoon and welcome to Leigh Sports Village, and a huge thank you to those of you who braved the dreadful weather to come to our previous home match here. It was amazing to see over 2,000 of you at the game and we were happy we could deliver three points against Sheffield United. Conditions were difficult but we know we let our intensity drop a little, so I was pleased to see us regain it away against London Bees. Having said that, two matches, eight goals and two more clean sheets is really pleasing. It’s my belief that if you can’t defend well, you can’t attack well so we are working on that as a foundation to everything we do. Siobhan Chamberlain has been excellent despite not always having a lot to do. When she has been called upon, she has made important saves. Two games in the space of four days meant we made a few changes to the side too. The lack of recovery time between fixtures is always an important consideration, but we also want to give everyone game time and the opposition a different challenge to think about every time we play. As an example, Lauren James played at no.9 on Sunday because

04 Manchester United Women v Durham Women

we knew she could cause their defenders problems – which she did! – and we changed our system in the second half. Having flexibility to change systems and personnel is really important because each team we face pose different problems for us to find solutions to. Today’s visitors, Durham, will do just that. They are unbeaten in the league and are a strong, physical side, meaning we’ll have to be especially aware at set-pieces. Lee Sanders’ side are also a team who have been together for a few years and I think that always makes a side difficult to play against. The closeness we’ve shown in just four months makes it look like we’ve been together years too, though. It is brilliant to see how incredible the togetherness is between the squad: they are great characters and that’s what I wanted – characters and voices, all supporting each other, on and off the pitch. That, plus your support, motivates us to keep our intensity and performance high. Enjoy the game.

THEY ARE GREAT CHARACTERS AND THAT’S WHAT I WANTED – CHARACTERS AND VOICES, ALL SUPPORTING EACH OTHER, ON AND OFF THE PITCH

LONDON BEES 0 UNITED WOMEN 5 CHAMPIONSHIP | THE HIVE | SCORERS: GREEN (17, 55), JAMES (27), M TURNER (44), TOONE (78) | ATT: 642

United remain top of the Championship after goals from Mollie Green (2), Lauren James, Millie Turner and Ella Toone ensured a third consecutive victory, on a sunny afternoon at The Hive Stadium against London Bees. The Reds, donning their pink away kit, started the brighter of the two teams. Kirsty Smith marauded her way into the penalty box and found Green, whose looping effort at goal just missed the target. But soon afterwards, United took the lead. James delivered a delightful low cross into the box from the left and Green was on hand to poke it home. James was tormenting the Bees’ defence and just before the half-hour mark she scored the second, the 16-year-old cutting inside in the penalty area and firing in at the near post. Moments later, Alex Greenwood, who had surged forward brilliantly, crossed the ball but Kirsty Hanson’s downward header hit the post. The visitors had to be wary of the threat from Bees midfielder Destiney Toussaint, whose direct runs down the right caused moments of concern for United. However, her

impact on the game was cut short as she was stretchered off just before half-time. There was still time for a third United goal ahead of the interval, Millie Turner netting her first for the club. A cross into the box forced a goalmouth scramble and the defender’s diving header found its way into the net, giving Casey Stoney’s side a healthy half-time lead. The visiting Reds continued to push for a fourth after the restart, and Green was the one to get it. Ten minutes into the second half, after some fine build-up play down the right, the 21-year-old midfielder was left in acres of space to put the ball through Sarah Quantrill’s legs in the Bees’ net for her second goal. With 15 minutes to play, substitute Toone was on hand to make it 5-0 as she made the most of a poor clearance by Quantrill, rounding off another assured display in front of goal for the Reds, and another clean sheet. onsidering we won 3-0 it might sound a little crazy, but we were disappointed with our performance against Sheffield United. The conditions weren’t great, which didn’t help, but we have high expectations of our performances, and against London Bees we were much better. We started stronger, we showed more intent getting forward, and we were more diligent at the back. I’m sure we’ll have other games like Sheffield United – it happens in football – and the fact we still got the win and kept a clean sheet are signs of a good side. Today’s opponents Durham have scored and conceded quite a few this season, and you fans might be hoping for an open game, but I’m not! We’ve got the taste of keeping clean sheets now, and we want another. As a defender, you take a lot of pride from that; it’s a nice feeling. Our fixtures are quite spread out for the next couple of months, but it was good to play two games so close to each other, as we did last week. Some of the players wouldn’t have been used to that, but it’s a lesson for what hopefully will come in the future – if we have ambitions of playing in the top division and the Champions League, we need to be ready for two games a week. The club provides brilliant facilities for recovery, and we already have strength

in depth in the squad, so we can have no excuses for not being ready for such a schedule. That strength in depth was clear to see in our last game. Aimee Palmer made her first start, and did really well – as did Naomi Hartley when she made her debut towards the end. I was pleased to see Millie Turner get her first goal, too. That’s eight different scorers we have now, which is another positive sign of a good team. I’ll have to try and get myself on that list at some point!

We stepped up our performance last Sunday

be up there. I knew if individuals were driving those standards and we were able to get to play some games against some of the WSL1 teams, my worries would be fine. Wearing the Manchester United badge can bring extra pressure, wouldn’t you agree? I think you always tend to play better under pressure. When there’s expectation there, it drives you sometimes and, for me personally, I think I play better under pressure. Teams are going to want to play us and beat us, so there is going to be a bit of that this season but we are ready for it. We’re not just preparing to win the Championship; we are prepping for future seasons to come. So you want to be here at United for the long haul then... Definitely, I’m not here just for a season, I want to be here for a few years and I want to make a difference. I feel like this year was always going to be a big year for me. I’ve been injured a couple of times in the last couple of years, so I really need a big year under my belt. I felt this was the club to get me to where I want to be. When you first heard that United were starting a women’s team ahead of the 2018/19 season, what were your initial impressions? I was a little taken aback when I heard. Obviously, there had been rumours in the past but nothing quite materialised, but when I found out that the rumours were true and that Casey was going to be the head coach, I was really excited – I think that was my overwhelming emotion.

Even at 27, Amy is one of the more senior members of a young United squad, and her experience is already proving vital

It’s not often you get chance to create history and to be part of a new project like this, is it? Yes, it’s a fresh start for a lot of us here. We’re all at different stages in our careers, we’ve got quite a young team and I suppose my responsibility within the team now is probably different to what I’ve had at previous clubs. I don’t think I’ve quite reached my potential as such yet, so I’m looking forward to building and improving

WHEN THERE’S EXPECTATION THERE, IT DRIVES YOU, AND PERSONALLY I PLAY BETTER UNDER PRESSURE and hopefully the next two years will be a big time in my career. Describe yourself as a player… I’ve been described before as ‘a defender who enjoys defending’, which I find quite strange! I’m more of an old-school type defender I guess – I grew up more excited about defending, clearances and big headers than goals, shots on target and stuff like that. I do enjoy defending and recently I think I’ve matured into more of an analyser of the game. I like to read the game. I feel like I make good decisions at the right time.

What are your goals for the 2018/19 season? I think promotion from the Championship is probably our main aim for the season as a team but, I suppose in the short term, we want to come together as quickly as possible and get that unity going. I can already tell that the feelings are there and everybody in the squad is on the same page. We have some great characters in the squad and I think once we’ve all properly gelled together and we’re playing nice, attractive football, everything else will come. THE VISITORS Lee Sanders’ Wildcats are great entertainers, with plenty of goals on show once again this season...

F

ounded in 2014 via a merger between South Durham & Cestria and the city’s university side, Durham Women FC joined the second tier that same year, and have proven one of the division’s most consistent outfits. This will be their fifth campaign at this level, and under the tutelage of long-term boss Lee Sanders, they matched their best finish of fourth last term. Only eventual champions Doncaster Belles posted a stronger goal difference than the Wildcats, and they played out just two draws in the league – all of which has earned them a reputation as one of the division’s most eye-catching sides. But with United, Sheffield United and a host of other sides joining the Championship, Durham will have to be at somewhere near their best to

maintain their usual consistency in 2018/19. Pleasingly for Sanders and the club’s supporters, leading scorer Beth Hepple and captain Sarah Wilson were two of several players to renew their contracts during the close season, while other new faces have arrived to bolster the squad’s depth. Goalkeeper Hannah Reid joined from Hibernian Ladies, while midfielder Chloe Knott ended a four-year spell in the United States to sign. Defender Abby Holmes also returned to the UK – from Dutch side PEC Zwolle – to become the club’s first acquisition of the summer, and Sanders describes her as “another leader” on the pitch.

FREE-FLOWING ENCOUNTERS

After a rigorous pre-season, followed by a win and a loss in their opening Continental Tyres League Cup fixtures, their first league action of the campaign began with an impressive 2-0 win away to Sheffield United. Continental Tyres Cup duties then resumed with a 3-3 draw against Liverpool (the Merseysiders picking up the bonus point by winning the penalty shoot-out). Last weekend saw Durham involved in another entertaining draw, Hepple and Emily Roberts finding the target in a free-flowing league clash with Charlton, that finished 2-2 at the Wildcats’ New Ferens Park. An intriguing season lies ahead for the club, with a host of new opponents set to challenge Sanders’ side for a place in the table’s upper reaches. But with a squad that is growing in quality by the season, and more players choosing to remain at New Ferens Park, it’s clear that Durham are a stable, ambitious club. And if you need proof of their excellence and steady growth, look no further: they were named the division’s Club of the Year in 2017.

By his own admission, the role of Wildcats manager is more than just a job for the club’s head honcho. Proud Durhamite Sanders has been involved with the team, in some form, since 2006, when he started the girl’s youth side that would eventually merge to become Durham Women. “I’ve pretty much done every role, from secretary to manager of juniors,” he says, and his close bond with the club is clearly demonstrated by both his hard work behind the scenes this summer and the consistent results he manages to achieve.

The recipient of the division’s Player of the Year award last season, Ness is a Scottish international and Durham local who returned to the club in 2017 after a spell in Sweden. A physical striker, she netted her first goal for Scotland in a vital World Cup qualifier against Poland in January, and contributed nine goals to the Wildcats’ cause. Ness signed a new contract to keep her at the club in May and, at just 22 years old, the forward looks set to go from strength to strength in the coming years.
