THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN
To reach the final stages of the League Cup in our first season would be fantastic for this team’s development
G
ood evening and welcome back to Leigh for what is a very important night under the floodlights. I think the League Cup has been the best challenge we’ve had so far; it’s given us a real barometer to see where we’re at as a team. Our first two games were in this competition, of course – which feel like a long time ago now! I’d still say those performances were up there with the best of the season so far in terms of the levels we’ve managed to get to. We beat Liverpool away, and were unlucky to lose here against Reading. These games are where the players want to be – they want to be in the top flight, and the more games we can have against top-flight teams, the better for the squad’s development. Tonight’s opponents Durham have started the season well in the Championship, and they too will want to challenge themselves in the top division next year. We struggled against them in the league in September, we just couldn’t score. They didn’t really threaten, but that wasn’t the issue; it was our play in the final third. We need to tidy up on that if we are to give ourselves the best possible chance to get out of the group heading into the Everton away game next week.
It would mean a lot for us to progress to the quarter-finals and the prospect of a really big draw where we can test ourselves. Manchester United is about silverware, but we’re in year one, so it might just be that this season is about getting as far as we can, aiming for the latter stages of these competitions, and then we’ll see where we’re at and if we can push on. We play Durham again in a few days’ time, and our approach to that game won’t change from tonight. We believe in what we do and if players play well – and are fit – they will stay in the team for Sunday’s Championship fixture. I’ve been pleased with what I’ve seen in our most recent league games. There’s patience to our play, we’re moving the ball really well from side to side, and we’re scoring different types of goals, from different players. We’re also continuing to look a real threat from set-pieces, which is really good to see. After spending so long in second place, it’s also pleasing to be top. We don’t want to be chasing, we want to be leading, and the target for the girls is to stay there. But before our league trip to Durham, all our focus is on getting past them in the cup. Enjoy the game.

Green and Toone strike in Sussex to win it for Reds

Sunday’s long away trip down to East Sussex saw United overcome Lewes with two second-half goals in muddy conditions at The Dripping Pan. Katie Zelem forced the first notable parry by Lewes goalkeeper Faye Baker in the 14th minute, after some positive link-up play between United captain Alex Greenwood and Mollie Green on the right. Millie Turner was unfortunate not to convert the rebound, instead striking the outside of the post. Zelem then had a free-kick saved, shortly after Lizzie Arnot became the second United player to hit the post in the first half. Lewes were under almost constant pressure but almost snatched an unlikely breakthrough just before half-time when Georgia Robert forced a good save from Siobhan Chamberlain and a follow-up was cleared off the line. At half-time, Aimee Palmer was replaced by Charlie Devlin, while Leah Galton came on for Arnot. And it took only a further six minutes for United to score, with Greenwood threading

a pass down the left to Jess Sigsworth. Our no.9 then cut inside before squaring the ball to Green for an emphatic first-time finish. The Reds’ two half-time substitutes were heavily involved in the chase for a second goal, with Galton and Devlin both helping to tee up Sigsworth for attempts that were thwarted by the busy Baker in the Lewes goal. Sigsworth had left the field, making way for third sub Lauren James, by the time United doubled the advantage in the 80th minute. Devlin played her part, winning the penalty that Greenwood stepped up to take. Although the visiting skipper’s kick was saved by Lewes’ best performer Baker, Toone buried the ball after it dropped in the mud inside the six-yard box, thereby extinguishing any hopes the hosts might have had of forcing an unlikely draw. United run riot against struggling Londoners to claim top spot, with Green bagging three goals A Mollie Green hat-trick helped United surge to the top of the table after a thumping 8-0 home win over Millwall. After 16 minutes, Kirsty Hanson found space behind the Millwall defence and pulled the ball back for Lauren James, who found the far corner from 12 yards out. The Reds doubled the lead on 32 minutes. Alex Greenwood’s pinpoint cross from the left found Green, whose volley flew into the Millwall goal. Casey Stoney’s side put the game to bed before the break via an inch-perfect Katie Zelem free-kick, before Green grabbed her second two minutes later, cutting in from the left and curling a brilliant effort into the far corner. Just four minutes after the interval, Green got her hat-trick, latching on to Greenwood’s cut-back and tucking the ball low into the
corner. Substitute Ella Toone got in on the act on 58 minutes, and it was the move of the game. Great interplay with Kirsty Smith (left) allowed our no.7 the opportunity to curl a peach of a shot into the far corner from the edge of the box. Top scorer Jess Sigsworth then added to her tally, drilling in a low right-footed effort into the net, before Lizzie Arnot won a penalty on 78 minutes, clinically converted by Greenwood it to make it eight. Thankfully for Millwall, the goals ended there, but another win saw United leapfrog Spurs – whose turn it was to miss a matchday – into top spot. #ALLREDALLEQUAL As part of Manchester United Women’s ongoing commitment to equality under the #allredallequal campaign, this evening’s fixture is ONE dedicated to Stonewall’s campaigning fortnight and supporting the LOVE Rainbow Laces initiative. United are the only club to work directly with the charity as a member of TeamPride; a coalition of organisations dedicated to LGBT inclusion in sport and strengthening equality, diversity and inclusion within society. Ahead of kick-off, Rainbow Laces will be handed out to supporters and dedicated branding being put in place across the stadium. At Old Trafford tonight, where the men’s team are playing Arsenal, activities will also be taking place as the club supports the Rainbow Laces initiative as part of its own #allredallequal campaign. Speaking of the club’s support for Stonewall, MU Women’s head coach Casey Stoney said: “Equality and inclusion are core values within Manchester United and are promoted on and off the pitch. We are proud to be supporting Stonewall’s campaigning and encourage our fans to get behind the Rainbow Laces initiative to ensure football is a sport for everyone.” Manchester United’s equality, diversity and inclusion work continues to develop as part of the club’s #allredallequal campaign, with ongoing support and backing for Level Playing Field, MUDSA and Kick It Out. ine league games have passed since our last match in tonight’s competition, and this tie against Durham is one we’re all really looking forward to. Ultimately, we want to be playing against the best teams and the League Cup gives us the perfect opportunity to do that. The girls love playing against the top teams, and we want to prove that we can compete and beat the WSL teams, as we did against Liverpool in our very first game back in August. We want to be going to finals; in the future this club should be going to finals. We’re not putting pressure on ourselves
We had to work very hard to get the win against Lewes
when we say things like that, but there is an expectation there from us as players. We’ve won one and lost one so far in our group, but we know if we win against Durham tonight we’ll be in a great position to finish in the top two and reach the next round. Liverpool are playing Everton this evening in our group, and next week’s trip to Everton could be massive if we can get a positive result this evening. The league game against Durham was disappointing but we’ll take the lessons from that match into this one. We know what to expect and we’re in a better position now than we were then; we have a better mindset. We know not to get as frustrated on the pitch, to be patient and trust what we do. We know we’re good enough to beat anyone on our day, but Durham did a good job themselves against us. We’ll be wary of that, but we know the areas we need to improve on going into this cup tie. We all love a night game here at Leigh, and hopefully the conditions will be better than when we last played under the lights! You fans have been brilliant as always over the last few games, home and away, and we’re looking forward to meeting more of you as the season progresses. Manchester United Women v Durham Women 11

Many reasons: regular football, more game time but also the culture we’ve created in such a short time. The belief United instilled in me from the moment I walked in the door has been incredible. I feel like a valued player here; I’m only 21 but I already feel like I’m more of an experienced player. There’s a real belief in you from the coaching staff, the other players, and I now have more belief in my own ability, which is something I sometimes struggled with before. Growing up, was football always a big part of your life? Definitely. I’ve been obsessed with football since I was six. I always wanted to win every game, even playing in the street with my cousins. My role models were mostly from the men’s game and I was playing football with boys so being a female professional footballer wasn’t really something I thought about until I was in my teens. Around that time Liverpool and Everton were progressing in the game and I started to go to
watch more games. The last few years have been incredible; I’m so lucky to say I’m a professional footballer now. If I wasn’t one, I’d definitely still be doing something in sport... although I’m not quite sure what! You’re clearly a versatile player, who has played on the flanks, as a no.10, or even in a deeper midfielder role. Do you have a preferred position? I’m lucky to be able to play in all of those positions and do a decent job. At youth levels, I was always a central midfielder; coming to United, I was offered the chance to play in the no.8 role and that was a massive attraction for me. I believe that’s where my strengths are, and I think I’m showing that now. You sat out our league game against tonight’s visitors Durham, but what have you made of their season so far? I was injured for the league game. It was a disappointing result and frustrating to watch. We just couldn’t finish our dinner that night! Durham are a really strong side and hard to break down. But we’re really starting to develop as a team now and we’ll have a game plan that will hopefully see us win in the cup.

After Everton, there is a three-and-a-half week gap until our first game of 2019. Talk us through your Christmas plans away from football... Well, I’ve started my Christmas shopping! I’m usually so unorganised but I’m ahead of the game this year. I’ll be spending time with my family and eating lots of food – something the United girls say I never stop doing! I love cooking programmes like MasterChef and I’m a big fan of The Body Coach too. What’s your speciality dish? I’d probably say steak linguine. I love steak and pasta... carb heaven! That will get you energised for any game.
Leading the charge in difficult conditions down in Lewes on Sunday
I NOW HAVE MORE BELIEF IN MY OWN ABILITY, WHICH I SOMETIMES STRUGGLED WITH BEFORE How much are you looking forward to facing your old club Everton next week? I’m really excited to come up against Everton; I had so many positive experiences there, one being the Spring Series and being exposed to high-level WSL football, so it will be good to go back. While promotion is no doubt the priority this season, what would it mean to the players to go far in the League Cup? It would be so exciting. I was involved in a cup run with Everton last year, we got to the semis. It would be amazing to go far in it with United.
Have you moved closer to Manchester since joining the Reds? Yeah, I live in Manchester now with some of the girls, including my best mate Millie [Turner], who I’m sure you’ve seen [on social media] is a nightmare to live with as she jumps out at me all the time... I’m constantly on edge! Any plans to get Millie back? I am planning something actually... so I hope she doesn’t see this! It’s going to have to be massive because she never jumps at anything, so I need to properly get her back [laughs]. Who in the squad is the loudest? Definitely Katie Zelem. Always nattering! To be fair to her, she knows what she’s talking about... most of the time! Away from football and preparing steak linguine, how do you like to relax? I love hot yoga at the moment, but other than that I’d say I’m pretty boring! Catching up on sleep, does that count? We’re starting to hear more and more chants from the fans at our games. Have you heard them yourself while out on the pitch? I have definitely heard them. It’s difficult not to. The fans have been unbelievable. I’ve never experienced anything like it in my time as a player. It makes such a difference to us to have that support; it’s such an honour to hear chants for us, both when we’re playing home and away. ⬤ Manchester United Women v Durham Women 15

Well placed in the league and with four points in the cup, Sanders’ charges have plenty to play for...
L
ee Sanders’ Wildcats have been making steady progress in the second tier in recent years, finishing fourth, fifth and fourth over the past three campaigns, and they’ve started 2018/19 like a side intent on finally making the next step by winning promotion to the WSL. Last season saw Durham plunder in the goals while conceding quite a few along the way, making them anything but predictable, but they’ve looked better organised at the back this time around – certainly in the league, as United can attest. Still the only side to have stopped Casey Stoney’s side claiming three points in the league, Wildcats’ goalkeeper Hannah Reid rightly took the plaudits for saving Katie Zelem’s penalty in September’s 0-0 draw. Durham’s well-organised backline also merited much praise that day, however, with captain Sarah Wilson leading by example. And with a bit more luck at the other end, either Emily Roberts or Abi Cottam could have even nicked a win for the North East visitors. That stalemate came amid a run of eight games unbeaten for Durham to start their league campaign. November began in real style too, with a 5-0 home win against Lewes, followed by a 5-1 triumph at Millwall, with Abi Cottam’s goals later earning her a Player of the Month nomination. Such was the
Zoe Ness is another strong attacking option for manager Sanders
O N E TO WATC H: Beth Hepple An attacking midfielder who loves to push on, Hepple’s assists and goals have proved vital to her side over the past three seasons. The no.7 has been at the top of her game in recent games, scoring twice – including a deadeye free-kick – as Durham tore into Millwall, before bagging two more against Spurs on Sunday. Never afraid to try her luck from distance, she’ll be looking to keep Siobhan Chamberlain on her toes this evening. team’s confidence out on the pitch, few would have predicted their 0-2 loss to Leicester 10 days ago, but they bounced back in remarkable fashion on Sunday, winning 6-1 away to high-flying Tottenham. Roberts, Beth Hepple (2), Sarah Robson, Zoe Ness and Chloe Ryan got the goals in a win that means they arrive in Leigh with a real spring in their step. It’s an important night for the visitors, who’ll know that anything but a victory against the Reds will most likely put an end to their League Cup campaign. Sanders’ side have already played three games in Group Two North – a 1-4 defeat to Arsenal, a 1-0 win against Everton and a 3-3 draw with Liverpool, a tie in which they were denied a bonus point after losing the penalty shoot-out. But with Reading sitting out this matchday, a Durham win in what is their final group game would put them top, giving the Wildcats a real chance of advancing to the next round for the first time.
