THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN

Our League Cup run may be over, but it’s only made us more determined to go far in today’s competition

ello and welcome to Hyde United FC, where this afternoon we welcome London Bees in the last 16 of the Women’s FA Cup. It’s a different home ground for us today but we won’t let that faze us, especially as our ‘Barmy Army’ are with us everywhere we go. It’s been fantastic to see you at our recent fixtures, including the long away trips to Brighton and Arsenal in the FA Cup and League Cup. As you can imagine, there were contrasting emotions following those two ties. We were delighted to progress to the next round of the FA Cup against Brighton. It wasn’t our finest performance but I think it’s a testament to our team that we found a way to win down in Crawley. The game-changing moment for me was Siobhan Chamberlain’s penalty save with just 12 minutes to go and, of course, we know what Lauren James can do at the other end. We were obviously disappointed to miss out on a first League Cup final a few days later. The players were massively deflated after the game but, in a way, I was glad to see that reaction – it shows just how far we’ve come in such a short space of time that we’re disappointed to lose 2-1 to Arsenal, one of

04 Manchester United Women v London Bees

the best teams in the country. I was really proud of the way the players applied themselves and their tireless work ethic. After today, we’re back in league action on Wednesday against Sheffield United, our third game in a week. Fran Bentley and Ebony Salmon are on loan there and that’s huge for their development. I’m really keen on young players playing games. It’s great that they’re in our squad, training in a full-time capacity, but they need to play to develop, so that’s why we’ve sent them out to get that experience. We’re looking forward to getting back to playing in the league, but we’re eager to put together another cup run too. We’ve played London Bees twice already this season and although we won both fixtures, we’re under no illusions; this will be a tough game and there’s no room for complacency. Luke Swindlehurst’s side come here with the same aim as us: to be in the hat for the next round. We know a lot about them but we have to apply ourselves well and something I say all the time is that we have to be relentless in our standards. I’m confident we will be. Enjoy the game.

SOMETHING I SAY ALL THE TIME IS THAT WE HAVE TO BE RELENTLESS IN OUR STANDARDS. I’M CONFIDENT WE WILL BE

‘SOMETIMES YOU WIN... SOMETIMES YOU LEARN’ ARSENAL WOMEN 2 UNITED WOMEN 1 7 FEB | LEAGUE CUP | MEADOW PARK | SCORERS: MIEDEMA 18, 60; GREEN 83 | ATT: 1,836

United Women were knocked out of the League Cup by holders Arsenal at Borehamwood, as Vivianne Miedema’s brace sealed a semi-final win for the Gunners. The five-time winners of the tournament went ahead after 18 minutes, though it was United who dominated the opening exchanges. Jess Sigsworth was a constant menace on the right and worked an opening with a touch around her marker and a driving run into the box but her low, drilled shot went just wide. Arsenal’s first real opportunity resulted in the opening goal. Miedema latched on to a precise pass to poke the ball past the onrushing Siobhan Chamberlain – a clinical finish by the Women’s Super League’s top scorer. The home side dominated possession after breaking the deadlock and could have had a second goal if not for Katie Zelem’s excellent clearance just before half-time. Lucy Quinn had a free header at the back post, but Zelem anticipated the danger well and got across in front of Chamberlain to clear for a corner. Casey Stoney’s side started the second half well, as Lauren James produced two efforts

Green’s strike came seven minutes from time

from long range, with one going just over the bar and the other being saved by Arsenal goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal. Arsenal scored what turned out to be a decisive second strike, again through Miedema, when the Netherlands international brought the ball down inside the box, shifted it on to her left foot and fired past Chamberlain. United were limited to half-chances for most of the second half, including Kirsty Hanson firing over the bar shortly after coming on for James. In the 83rd minute, Mollie Green curled in a shot from just outside the area to give her team hope, but although the Reds enjoyed plenty of late possession it wasn’t to be. The disappointment was clear to see on the United players’ faces at full-time, but to reach a cup semi-final and run the holders close, less than a year after forming the team, is a notable achievement for Stoney and her squad. United Women: Chamberlain, Harris (Toone 75), A Turner, M Turner, Smith; Greenwood (c), Zelem, Green; James (Hanson 64), Galton (Arnot 80), Sigsworth. Subs not used: Ramsey, Roberts, Palmer, Devlin

CASEY STONEY’S ASSESSMENT:

SOCIAL REACTION:

“We’re disappointed with our first-half display in terms of our shape and our discipline. We corrected that in the second half and the players who came on made a difference and we had a go. “I don’t think we disgraced ourselves. I told my players I’m proud of them. I thought one of our penalty claims definitely was [a penalty] but I’m going to say that, I’m the manager. I’d like to have seen a bit more given in our favour but that’s the game. “Arsenal are a fantastic side. I think the step up is in the intensity and the speed of play; the way Arsenal moved tonight and rotated. But we’ve got a young side and they’re still learning. They’ll learn a lot from tonight. We’ll analyse the game and show some things back [on video] that we need to look at.”

Lethal Lauren steps off the bench to help seal United’s FA Cup progress against the Seagulls A Lauren James brace and a superb penalty save by Siobhan Chamberlain gave Manchester United Women an impressive 2-0 win away against top-flight side Brighton & Hove Albion in the SSE Women’s FA Cup. James, a half-time substitute, didn’t take long to make her presence felt, giving United the lead after 51 minutes. Jess Sigsworth did brilliantly on the right, driving into the area and delaying her pass just long enough for James to reach and sweep home a first-time shot. The teams went in level at the break after a cagey opening 45 minutes, though; Ella Toone, who looked dangerous every time she got the ball, had the only shot on target. Our no.7 did well to connect with Kirsty’s Hanson’s cross from the left, but Brighton’s Fliss Gibbons was in the right place to head away. The game opened up in the second half, with James’s goal coming just six minutes in and chances for both sides throughout. United looked the most likely to score again and extend the lead, with Alex Greenwood, Toone and Sigsworth all having opportunities. Brighton had a golden chance to equalise with 12 minutes remaining, however. Amy Turner’s challenge on Kayleigh Green in the area was adjudged to be a foul by referee Aji Ajibola, who pointed to the spot. Danni Buet

The home side continued to push for a goal but United stood firm and made sure of the result when James scored her second in added time. The 17-year-old used her strength to hold off Brighton defenders as she strode into the area before unleashing a low, hard strike past Seagulls’ goalkeeper Sophie Harris. MATCH ABANDONED AT CHARLTON The Reds’ away game at Charlton on 13 January was abandoned following a serious injury to Addicks player Charlotte Kerr. Kerr was involved in a collision as Charlie Devlin scored to put United 1-0 up on 11 minutes, with the referee calling the match off (right) following an hour-long delay as Kerr received oxygen while being treated on the pitch at The Oakwood. Kerr left hospital the next day after suffering a bruised sternum and ribs. Charlton Athletic Women were later fined £500 for failing to provide oxygen for the fixture, with United’s supply being used following the incident. League rules state that clubs must ensure that emergency sports first-aid equipment is present and in full working order at each competition match – at minimum, this includes a spinal board, cervical collar, fracture splints, crutches, stretcher, oxygen and a defibrillator. The Championship fixture has been rescheduled for Sunday 24 March.

veryone loves the FA Cup and I’m no different, I absolutely love it and can’t wait to play in it in front of a home crowd for the first time as a United player. I have some fantastic memories, and some awful memories of playing in the Cup. It’s the best competition to be a part of – the history, the tradition, the buzz. Every player wants to get to the final and I’ve been lucky enough to participate in a final at Wembley before, with Notts County in 2015. I was a runner-up that day, but the experience was incredible. I say to the girls all the time, if I get there again it will be different. The occasion got the better of me on the day, but I’m a different person now and I’d love this team, these girls to experience it. We’re not getting carried away, though. The final is a long way away and we’ve got a job to do today. We take confidence from every game we play and although we’ve had two good results against London Bees this season, this is the Cup and we know anything can happen. This is also the first time playing at home after being knocked out of the Continental Cup in the semi-final against Arsenal. If you’d have asked us at the start of the season, we’d have probably taken that result but after actually getting there, we wanted to win and believed we could. We

Although we beat Brighton, we know we can do better

were obviously disappointed, but overall we took a lot of positives from it. It was good to see where we are at and how far we’ve come; we came up against the best side in the country at the moment and put up a good fight. Our first ever FA Cup tie was against another WSL side, Brighton. It was a fantastic result, but we were a little disappointed with our performance, which just shows how high our standards are. LJ scored two great goals, but for me Shiv’s penalty save was the game changer; if that goes in, it’s a different game. Hopefully we won’t need Shiv’s heroics today, but I’m hoping we’ll be celebrating again come full-time. Manchester United Women v London Bees 13

Speaking ahead of the midweek trip to Leicester, Leah Galton shares her journey to Manchester via New York and Munich – and our no.11 reveals why she took a long break from the game last year How are you enjoying your rest day, Leah? It’s good to have a chilled-out Monday on the back of two games and a lot of training. The Arsenal game was my first full game back after injury, so I’ve brought some ‘recovery legs’ home to sit in while watching TV. I’m watching The Walking Dead, and I’m in love with it!

What was the mood like in the dressing room after the game at Borehamwood? We were gutted, to be honest. A semi-final is the hardest time to go out, as you just miss out on a final, but we kept our heads held high even if we were distraught inside. And training has been really good since then – we’ve gone over the game and it’s made us even more determined to go far in the FA Cup.

time when we were also top of the league. We were all really happy with that achievement. On a personal level, I’d say starting against Everton in the Conti Cup in December and scoring my first United goal that night. Talk us through that goal… I rarely score with my head so that was a shock! But it was brilliant at the same time. As I’ve been in and out of the team with injury and haven’t played too many games, getting Galton’s first goal a start in a big game like came against the Toffees that was great. I’d been training well and the coaches were backing me, which is a good feeling in itself. With the Charlton game abandoned and the Villa game needing to be rearranged, we’ve fallen down the table without kicking a ball. Does reclaiming top spot provide extra motivation heading into the upcoming Championship fixtures? In the back of our minds is obviously our desire to win the league, but to be honest, we take every game as it comes and we’ll continue to do that. We’re still close to the top, we know we have games in hand and we’re confident we can get the results we need. Tell us how you first got into the sport... I started playing when I was about five. My dad used to play so he’d take me to his game every Saturday, and I’d have a ball stuck to my foot the whole time. He was encouraging about me joining a team if I wanted to, but he never pushed it. I went to my local team [near Harrogate, North Yorkshire] and it went from there, really. After that I went up through the age groups at Leeds United’s Academy.

MOVING TO NEW YORK WAS THE SCARIEST DECISION I’VE EVER MADE, BUT ALSO THE BEST ONE ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| What made you decide to move to the States after finishing school? I didn’t know whether I wanted to do it, to be honest, and it was horrible to start with! When I was growing up, it was kind of the done thing to go to America to play and get your degree at the same time. I decided when I was 17 that I was going to move to New York to play and I was lucky enough to get a full scholarship. It was the scariest decision I’ve ever made but also the best one. I absolutely loved college. You get to play every day and study at the same

And when did you realise you might be able to pursue football as a career? When I was doing well at college [at Hofstra University, New York]. I didn’t really think about it being possible but when I got drafted quite high up [13th in the 2016 National Women’s Soccer League College Draft], I realised then I could make a career out of it.

time, which is great. College football is crazy because the season is about three months long. You play every Friday and Sunday in that time, so it’s intense! Here, the season is spread across most of the year which is better, in my opinion, but I did love it at college. What are your stand-out memories from your time in America? In my first year at college we won the championship, which was unbelievable. After my four years I was drafted to play professionally [for New Jersey-based NWSL club Sky Blue FC], which was definitely another highlight.

11

West Ham United

It was around this time last year when you took that break. How much do you feel you benefited from it? I took four months off. It wasn’t that I wasn’t enjoying football, it was more that I needed something else, and time to discover other things I’m good at too. Taking a break was 100 per cent the right decision for me and I don’t regret any of it. It gave me time to realise how much I missed the game and how much I love playing football. I tried personal training, which was good fun, but ultimately decided I wanted to get back to playing football while I’m fit, healthy and the right age. How did the move to United come about – and what made you decide to sign? The timing was perfect. I hadn’t been playing for a few months but I went for a meeting with Casey. After walking out of the door, everything in me wanted to play for her and her team. What’s it been like working with Casey? She’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. She looks after the whole person, not just the football side of things, which is brilliant, I really like that. You can see that she cares about everyone, not just what they do on the pitch. 20 Manchester United Women v London Bees

GALTON

A year later, in late 2017, you were signed by Bayern Munich. How would you sum up your time in Germany? The Bayern Munich set-up, the staff, the team, were all incredible. They were so professional, it’s no wonder they’re as good as they are. But for me, it came at a time when I’d been away from home for six years already and I just needed to be closer to home, to my family. That’s when I decided to take a break from playing.

And how have you found working with this United squad? You all seem to get along so well… I don’t think I’ve ever been so close or so connected with a group of people than I am to this team. I’ve never seen a team quite like this one; this squad’s togetherness is unreal.

We enjoyed the recent promotional video that you, Katie and Mollie did alongside Paul Pogba and Juan Mata. Did you share many hair-styling tips? [Laughs] They did ask a lot about my hair style, as I try and have a new style for every game. It was nice to just sit and chat, to see their personalities. We spoke about fashion, and how it combines with football, and it was fun.⬤

THE VISITORS

The Bees have been on a roll since their last visit, and will be out to ‘start stronger’ against the Reds

T

he Bees head into their second meeting of 2019 with Casey Stoney’s Reds keen to enact some revenge, after a league drubbing in January ensured a demoralising start to the new year. But Luke Swindlehurst’s side didn’t flinch, and proved their mettle by responding with three consecutive wins. They fell to league leaders Tottenham Hotspur in their last match, but the Bees don’t have to look too hard for positives. Today’s trip to Hyde represents their first foray into this stage of the Women’s FA Cup, while they require just one more win to reach their best second-tier points tally ever. Their victory in the last round of the Cup came away to fellow Championship side Leicester City – who trail the Bees by just one point in the league – and high-flying United and Spurs are the only sides to deny the Bees victory in their last seven league outings. “After the Tottenham game [a 3-0 defeat on 10 February], we had a quick chat,” revealed midfielder Destiney Toussaint, “and I think going into United we need to learn from it and start stronger, from the off. “Last time we played United we didn’t play very well, as shown by the scoreline, but hopefully

O N E TO WATC H: Annabel Johnson A summer acquisition from Durham, the 25-year-old full-back has quickly become an indispensable asset for boss Swindlehurst. Johnson is also a keen and energetic contributor to the Bees’ attack, and a dangerous threat from dead-ball situations. It was her free-kick that enabled Katie Wilkinson to prise the precious opening goal at Leicester in the last round, and she’ll no doubt be ready to step up the pitch today.

it’s going to be a better performance,” added the Bees’ no.4. “It’s the FA Cup; anything can happen. You’re always going to go with a fire in your belly.”

DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS

Despite the aforementioned heavy beating from United, the Bees’ defence has been key to their recent form. Swindlehurst was full of praise for the defensive quartet of Annabel Johnson (see above), Ellie Wilson, Ocean Rolandsen and Merrick Will after a recent 2-0 win against Lewes, down at the Sussex club’s Dripping Pan home. With 14 goals already conceded against the Reds this season, they will need to be at their best today. However, Swindlehurst believes they are more than capable of producing an upset. “The best is yet to come,” says the boss. “There is much more we are capable of, so that’s the exciting thing for this group of players.”
