REMEMBERING ALAN HEALY

LEAGUE CUP NEXT AT LSV

The club is saddened to report the passing of Alan Healy, the stadium announcer for United games at Leigh Sports Village. Having previously announced the Reds’ line-ups for Academy fixtures played here, in August he read out the names of the United Women team for their historic inaugural home fixture, against Reading, alongside Old Trafford announcer Alan Keegan. Alan was a hugely popular figure at LSV, and everyone at the stadium was shocked to hear of his passing. Our thoughts are with all his friends and family at this difficult time.

After today’s league tussle with Millwall, our next home game sees a return to the Continental Tyres League Cup, with Durham the visitors on Wednesday 5 December. With top-flight clubs Liverpool, Reading and Everton making up the group, it’s a tie the Reds will be desperate to win if we are to stay in the chase for a place in the quarter-finals, with the top two progressing after each team has played four games. If you want to cheer us on, it’s a 7pm kick-off here in Leigh.

THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN

Tactical flexibility made the difference at Palace, helped by our ‘game changers’ on the sidelines

W

elcome back to Leigh Sports Village where today we face Millwall Lionesses. They are a club with great tradition, although they’re going through a bit of a transitional period. You can see that with their results. They have a very young team, a new manager and are still trying to find their way a bit. Having said that, anything can happen with these types of fixtures, and we have to make sure our standards remain high throughout. We weren’t at our best against Palace and it is fair to say it was a game of two very different halves. It took us a while to adjust to the surface and we were sloppy in possession. I have to give Palace credit too; they really came at us in the first half. It was a good test for us and just goes to show if you don’t look after the ball well enough and give away silly fouls, like we did, you cause yourselves problems. We were 1-0 up at half-time but I didn’t think we were worthy of the lead at that point. The beauty of the squad we have though, is that we were able to make a slight tweak to our formation, almost going to a 4-4-1-1. Jess Sigsworth made a big difference to us coming off the bench at half-time. I don’t call

them substitutes, I call them ‘game changers’. All three did just that against Palace: Jess made some good runs, stretching the defence; Lauren James won a penalty; and Kirsty Smith got an assist. Kirsty coming on also meant we were able to push Alex Greenwood further forward, which worked really well. Alex was heavily involved in the goals, getting on the scoresheet herself and providing two assists, one from a set-piece. Huge credit to our goalkeeper coach, Ian, for the set-piece routines. We spend a lot of time on them and we were disappointed it took us until the Tottenham match to score from one. We’re not rigid in our set-piece plans, though. If something is on, we give the players the freedom to do what they think is right and that paid off for Mollie Green’s goal at Palace, which with her left foot was one of the best I’ve seen. It’s good to be back among the clean sheets, too. We were disappointed to have conceded against Spurs, but it’s a reminder to the players that if we don’t take care of the details in our defending, any team is capable of scoring. We’ll be looking to take care of those details today. Enjoy the game.

CAPITAL GAINS

It’s a perfect day at Palace, coming on the back of home victory against their fellow Londoners Spurs

PALACE LADIES 0 UNITED WOMEN 5 SUN 18 NOV | CHAMPIONSHIP | HAYES LANE | SCORERS: ARNOT 17, 55; GREEN 59, 83; GREENWOOD 75 (PEN) | ATT: 975

Braces from Lizzie Arnot and Mollie Green, along with a penalty from Alex Greenwood, helped United maintain our unbeaten league record with a convincing 4-0 win against Crystal Palace Ladies at Hayes Lane. With Casey Stoney’s visitors threatening from both flanks from the off, it was the wingers who combined to give us the lead. Katie Zelem, so often the one to kick-start attacks, did so with a threatening through ball that tempted Crystal Palace goalkeeper Shanell Salgado to charge out. Kirsty Hanson got there before the onrushing Salgado and did brilliantly to turn, get her head up and pick out Arnot in the box. The Scot picked her spot, slotting in a composed one-touch finish. A fiercely competitive first 45 minutes saw few other clear-cut chances for either side. Martha Harris had a shot blocked after good play between her and Arnot down the right.

Harris goes close during a tight first half, before United took control after the break

Hanson also threatened with a long-range shot, while Ella Toone should have doubled United’s lead just after the half-hour mark, firing just wide from six yards out. Though United went in 1-0 ahead at the break, there will have been plenty for boss Stoney to ponder. Top scorer Jess Sigsworth replaced Toone at half-time and it didn’t take long for the no.9 to get into the action, putting in a teasing cross that just evaded Arnot. Arnot did soon have her second though, getting the final touch on Greenwood’s brilliant low cross that caused chaos in the Palace box. A scramble ensued but it was Arnot who claimed it for her fifth goal for the club. Play opened up with the score at 2-0 and just four minutes later Green scored the goal of the game. A short corner routine executed to perfection, Greenwood found Green, and our no.8 touched the ball past her marker before sweeping in a beautiful left-footed curler. Lauren James replaced Devlin with 18 minutes to go and swiftly won a penalty, driving at the Palace backline and drawing the foul. Greenwood, playing at left wing by that stage of the game, stepped up to take it and buried the kick home for her first United goal. United’s fifth came through Green who fired her second in from a Kirsty Smith through ball, to cap a dominant display in Bromley. United Women: Chamberlain; Harris, A Turner, M. James, Sigsworth and Devlin apply finishing touches as Reds are ruthless in top-of-the-table showdown Casey Stoney’s side put four past league leaders Tottenham on an enjoyable afternoon at Leigh Sports Village ahead of this month’s international break. Lauren James starred on her return to the side by scoring one and assisting another for Jess Sigsworth, whose brace took her 2018/19 goals tally to eight. Charlie Devlin scored her first goal for the club in the second half, before Angela Addison became the first opponent to score past United and Siobhan Chamberlain in the league with a late consolation strike that made it 4-1. James (below) gave the Reds the lead after 10 minutes, netting the first effort on Tottenham’s goal following excellent work from Sigsworth. Our no.9 turned brilliantly in her own half before her driving run opened up space for James on the edge of the area. The 17-year-old’s deft footwork took her past two players and allowed her to pick her spot past Spurs goalkeeper Chloe Morgan. James returned the favour minutes later, turning provider for Sigsworth to tap in her low cross from the left. Passages of play swept from end to end in the first half, though Tottenham struggled to create any clear-cut chances. Relentless in applying pressure and clinical in front of goal, United had a third to celebrate before the break. Leah Galton – on for Kirsty Hanson just after the half-hour mark – made an immediate impact, winning a free-kick in a dangerous position on the left. Katie Zelem’s pinpoint delivery found Sigsworth at the back post to nod in her second of the game. Alex Greenwood nearly added another set-piece goal moments later, when her free-kick rattled off the post. It fell kindly for Amy Turner but the centre-back fired the ball over. The second half followed a similar pattern

Sigsworth’s strength caused Spurs constant problems

to the first, with the Reds applying pressure from the outset and enjoying sustained periods of possession. Spurs, tenacious in their tackling, were limited to half-chances throughout and looked to Addison whenever possible to cause problems on the counterattack. United nearly had a fourth through Greenwood’s indirect free-kick following a handled backpass, but the captain’s fierce effort was deflected wide. Constant pressure finally paid off, however. Ella Toone and Mollie Green were denied from long range and Galton had an effort cleared off the line, before Devlin – on for James – bagged her first goal for the club. Addison then claimed a late goal for the visitors, heading in from an 82nd-minute corner.

THE CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

I

t’s been a long time coming but I am buzzing to have scored my first goal for United! I’ve been getting a bit of stick about it in training; I’m an attacking full-back so I want to be getting in on the goals more than I have been. I’m happy with assists as well, of course, as long as we’re winning, and another positive from last Sunday was the goal Mollie Green scored from our short corner routine – and what a finish! When routines you’d been working on in training come off on the pitch it’s such a great feeling. Seeing so many travelling fans at Palace was amazing too; you are a credit to the club. Those who went arrived at Bromley before we did, we Delight for the skipper as she makes it 4-0 from the spot last Sunday

hadn’t even got changed for the warm-up and our songs were ringing out! Credit to the Palace fans too, the atmosphere was brilliant all round. But you can always hear our fans loud and proud. We want to keep performing for you and it’s really important for us to build momentum, not just as players on the pitch but as a club, all of us together and you’re a big part of that. Talking of momentum, we now have a run of fixtures to look forward to in the build-up to Christmas, which will be fantastic for the team. There’s been so much inconsistency with fixtures, which is difficult for us as players. It’s sometimes tough when you can’t get yourself into a game mindset regularly. We work hard in training but the pitch is where we want to be. We’ve got some really important games ahead, both in the league and cup, and we want to make sure we’re in good form for the start of 2019. That starts today. We won’t be reading much into Millwall’s position in the table, that’s for sure. Our opponents, whoever they are in the league, are looking to their fixture against us and raising their games, almost like it’s a cup final, and we have to be prepared professionally. We’ll be giving everything to get three more points on the board. Manchester United Women v Millwall Lionesses 09

MARTHA HAR R IS I NTE RVI EW

“Looking back, I’m so grateful Dad pushed me” It would be fair to say football runs in the family for Martha Harris, and here our no.2 shares her journey so far, from Lincoln Ladies to Manchester... After a quiet October, the team have a busy schedule leading up to Christmas. How much are you looking forward to the games ahead? It was obviously different only playing one competitive game in October. We had a few friendly games and training was a bit more intense but there’s nothing like matchday. It will definitely be good to get into a run of games as we haven’t been able to do that for a while. It will be good for the fans to be able to see us play more often too... especially if we’re playing well!

We have looked very dangerous in attack from wide positions. How have you enjoyed having such dynamic wingers in front of you? I hate marking Kirsty [Hanson] MARTHA’S and Lizzie [Arnot] in training! STATISTICS They’re so good on the ball Age: 24 Born: Lincoln and so fast but they get back Position: Full-back and defend too, which is Previous clubs: brilliant. You’ve had your moments in attack as well. Are you hopeful of getting on the scoresheet sometime this season? Oh, absolutely. My dad is a massive

Of your appearances so far, which have you enjoyed the most? Tottenham. They were top of the league and we went into it knowing they were a good side and in form. When the first goal went in, I knew we’d win. We had worked so hard in the lead up to the game and we were all buzzing with that result.

How would you describe yourself as a player? I would say in the past I have usually been a quite defensive full-back, but I am trying to be a bit more attacking this year. I’m trying to link up with the wide players more... but to be honest, they’re so good I just give it to them and more often than not they beat the opposition defenders on their own!

United fan and every game he comes to, he keeps saying he’s going to see me score my first United goal. I’m trying, Dad! Do you remember when you last scored? I can’t, no! I know it’s been a while now. For readers who won’t know your family football connections, talk us through it... My dad, Glen, has been a coach for as long as I can remember. He was manager at Lincoln Ladies, he worked at the club’s Centre of Excellence with both boys and girls and he also managed at Doncaster Rovers Belles.

in the youth teams at Lincoln. My younger brother, Liam, also went through the Centre of Excellence at Lincoln and spent a couple of years playing football in Sweden. So where does Mum fit into all of this? She just had to learn to like football! She loves it and comes everywhere to watch me. Growing up, we’re guessing football was a big part of your life from a young age... It was, always. I remember kicking a ball around in the garden a lot with my brother and sometimes my twin sister, with Dad in goal. I was the only girl who played football in primary school, but we had a good team in secondary school. We always used to go to watch Megan play too. I liked playing all sports but football was always number one. Did you always want to be a footballer? Yeah, and Dad was always telling me how I needed to do the extra bit and would take me to the park to do running. Sometimes I thought I couldn’t be bothered but looking back and seeing the bigger picture, I’m so grateful he pushed me and put the time in with us.

And your sisters and brother... My older sister Megan is a former player. I played with her at Lincoln in the first team. And Casey is Megan’s partner. People ask me if it’s weird with Casey being my boss as well as being family but there’s a clear separation: at football, she’s my manager; away from football, we don’t speak about football really. It’s great because it means I get all of my family at matches, so I get to see my nieces and nephew a lot too. I also played in the same team as my twin sister, Emily,

There’s competition for places across the squad, including in the full-back positions. What benefits does such competition bring to the team? It pushes everyone a bit harder in training because we’re all after a spot in the team at the weekend. We train as if we are playing in a match so it makes us a lot more competitive. Looking ahead to next month, we have another top-flight test, away to Everton in the Continental Tyres League Cup. How much are you looking forward to that? We always know going into games against WSL teams that it will be a completely different challenge. We’ll be the underdogs in that game but it’s one that we’re all looking forward to next month. Considering your WSL title win and Champions League experience with Liverpool, such games won’t faze you. How did you benefit from your time there? I was always one of the younger players, alongside experienced players like Fara Williams and Natasha Dowie. I looked up to them and they were really supportive. Coming here, I’m one of the older players so I’ve tried to take what I learnt from them and use it here. It must have been a very proud moment to be named PFA Young Player of the Year while at Liverpool, as well as winning the league title. How would a Championship winner’s medal compare to those achievements? I haven’t won anything for a few years so this year I want to try and change that! We are a very ambitious and hardworking team so hopefully we can be successful this season.

Martha’s strong tackling has won her plenty of admirers this season

AT HOME, I’M TRYING TO TEACH KATIE AND JESS HOW TO COOK! How much are you enjoying life in Manchester since moving here? I love it! The city is really nice, I enjoy going into town and we’ve found the good places for brunch. We have three club houses pretty much on the same road. I live with Katie Zelem and Jess Sigsworth but we all get together with the others. We all watched The Greatest Showman the other night. Who’s the best cook out of you, Katie and Jess? Me, definitely! I’m good at fajitas. I try to teach those two how to cook so they can help, but it’s usually me cooking.

You’ve represented England at a few levels now. How much would you love Proudly posing with to make the step up Do you like TV cooking shows? her PFA award in 2014 to the senior team? I like Come Dine With Me. We I’ve had a couple of years with suggested getting that going injuries so I’m getting back to the level between the houses as we’re all so close I was at before, but I’m not quite there together but then I realised I’d just be the one yet. I’d definitely like to be pushing for who ended up cooking... and Millie Turner England in the next couple of years, though. would probably poison us [laughs]! 14 Manchester United Women v Millwall Lionesses

THE VISITORS With a solitary point in the league, the Lionesses are still looking to kick-start their 2018/19 season

T

he Lionesses from south-east London were trailblazers in the women’s game, becoming the first English side to affiliate with a professional men’s team, but the two-time FA Cup winners will be hoping for a more prosperous 2019 following a very tough year. Serious financial issues left the Lionesses on the brink of going into administration in April, with a crowdfunding page helping to secure the club’s short-term future. Despite such off-field problems, it was to the immense credit of the players and coaching staff that they remained focused on picking up points, finishing the season with just three defeats in 18 second-tier outings. But with the Lionesses’ survival being threatened, 36 years after they were formed, a summer of change

was inevitable ahead of the new campaign. A number of players moved on – including striker Ella Rutherford (named as one of the division’s ‘breakout stars’ of last term, alongside future Red Ebony Salmon). In the dugout, manager Lee Burch and assistant boss Lauren Phillips both left, with Chris Phillips (see right) taking charge.

TALENTED TEENAGERS

With recruitment proving a real challenge for the new manager, a raft of talented teens have been fast-tracked into the Lionesses’ starting XI, and as such it was always likely that such an inexperienced side would take time to gel. Midfielder Lia Cataldo and forward Gabby Ravenscroft are two fresh recruits who have got on the scoresheet, and while there have been encouraging signs in certain games – Phillips’ side drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace and lost by a single goal to both London Bees and Leicester – it’s been harder to find positives in recent weeks as they’ve been overrun by Tottenham (0-8), Charlton (0-8), Aston Villa (0-2) and, most recently, Durham (1-5). It was midfielder Evie Clarke who at least ended Millwall’s barren run of three games without a goal in the home defeat to the Wildcats, but another disastrous day defensively leaves them rooted to the bottom of the Championship table as they head north to take on the Reds, with their goal difference now standing at -27. Amid all the change on the pitch, one familiar face who remains is club captain Leanne Cowan, with the full-back recently returning to action following a lengthy absence with an ankle injury. Having been at the club since the age of eight, the 22-year-old is likely to play an important role in attempting to keep the Reds’ attack at bay today.

S The Lionesses squad underwent an overhaul during the summer

M A N A G E R: Chris Phillips

O N E TO WATC H: Gabby Ravenscroft

A key part of the development of numerous young players at Arsenal Women, Londoner Phillips made the move across the capital in July this year to replace outgoing Millwall boss Lee Burch, with ex-Gunners manager Pedro Martinez Losa also joining the Lionesses as their new director of football. An upbeat character whose love for the game is infectious, Phillips has continued to focus on the positives despite a testing first few months in the hotseat. “My team have inspired me and I can’t fault their application,” he said. “At some point our luck has to change and it gives me great pride to see the Millwall faithful stick with my team.”

England youth international Ravenscoft also arrived from Arsenal this summer, having previously starred for Oxford United and Reading at junior level. Although a regular goalscorer for Arsenal’s development side last season, strong competition for places in the first team led to the forward dropping down to the Championship, where she’s worn the no.9 shirt for the Lionesses. Having only turned 18 last month, Ravenscoft looks to the vastly more experienced England striker Jodie Taylor as her inspiration as the teenager continues with development, with two goals to her name so far this term making her the Lionesses’ joint-top scorer.
