Manchester United Women secured promotion to the Women’s Super League with three games to spare after a ruthless 5-0 home win over Aston Villa Ladies. A bullet header from Millie Turner broke the deadlock on six minutes before skipper Alex Greenwood doubled the Reds’ advantage from the penalty spot midway through the first half. Jess Sigsworth (right) added the third with a composed finish when one-on-one with opposition keeper Sian Rodgers to send the hosts into the break with a 3-0 lead.

Four minutes into the second half, Ella Toone made it four with a well-taken volley, and there was drama soon after as Villa’s Rodgers saw red for handling the ball outside her penalty area. United substitute Charlie Devlin completed an impressive display by Casey Stoney’s side by slotting home a beautiful finish on 73 minutes. THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN

We’re pleased to be back in front of you brilliant fans today, and I’m certain every one of the team will remain focused on continuing our winning run

H

ello and welcome back to Leigh Sports Village, just three days after we were last here to face Aston Villa in what’s been a massive week for us in the Championship. Just three games remain, and every team we face between now and the end of the season will be looking to spoil the party. Dean Davenport’s Crystal Palace will be no different this afternoon. We know Palace have a bit of pace that could cause us problems and it will be a different game to the away fixture played on an artificial pitch in November, compared to the grass here at Leigh. Palace have had an inconsistent season but we know that if we execute our game plan, we will win. As clichéd as it sounds, we haven’t been looking too far ahead into the maths and permutations of certain results in recent weeks, though I was told. Obviously, we know that if we do our job and keep winning, we will be crowned champions. The players know what’s required and it’s my job to make sure they remain focused,

which I know they will. No matter who we’re playing, we’re not only preparing for in the moment but for the future as well. This year, the first year in our plan, it has been about promotion and winning the league in the right way. It has always been our aim to play exciting, attractive football and keep as many clean sheets as possible. That’s been the message, and we want to keep up the momentum to the end of this season and beyond. The team might say I’m a bit of a nightmare to work with because even when we win, I’ll still be critiquing the things we can do better. That’s what it’s like being a professional team. There are always things we can improve on; it’s about maintaining our very high standards and our winning mentality to make sure we’re the best we possibly can be. We’ll be looking to show you our best this afternoon to get the three points we need. Enjoy the game.

THE CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

T

he season may be drawing to a close but, writing this column ahead of the Aston Villa game, we know we still have work to do. We’ve known for a few weeks that two wins from our remaining four matches would mean we win the league, but we always respect our opposition; there are no easy fixtures in this division. Crystal Palace will be no pushovers, despite their league position. We beat them 5-0 away in November – a match I remember fondly as I scored my first goal for the club – but this will be a different test. Katie’s so important to this team, on and off the pitch

And with the game coming less than three days after playing Villa, the strength of our squad will come into its own, too. We have such a talented and determined group of girls here, and it’s brilliant to be a part of. Four of my team-mates have now won the FA Women’s Championship Player of the Month award, the most recent being Zel. She has had a great season and is at the heart of our team. She dictates the play game after game, and is a fantastic character to have in the dressing room. We also have a number of England Under-19 internationals in our squad, who have recently qualified for the European Championship. I managed to watch their first game against Turkey; they were head and shoulders above them and I had no doubts they would qualify. It’s fantastic to see so many of our girls involved at that level. It’s such an important age to continue developing and learning the game and the more they play, the more they will improve. I’ve seen some of that development first hand at United this year. Every single member of the squad has contributed this season and we will continue to do so until the final day of the season. Enjoy the game. Manchester United Women v Crystal Palace Ladies 07

It didn’t take long for the talented teen to get her own chant – here our popular no.6 talks to us about science studies, scary spiders and continuing to learn from Casey Stoney How would you sum up the 2018/19 campaign so far? I’d say there have been ups and downs throughout the season, which is normal, but we are where we want to be in the table. I think before we started the season, if you said we would reach a quarter-final and semi-final too, we wouldn’t have expected that so overall I’d say it’s been a really good first season.

What’s been your no.1 highlight? I think it has to be making my debut [v Reading in the League Cup]; it was a really proud moment for myself and my family. Being part of the first ever professional AIMEE’S United side has STATISTICS been unreal and whatever happens Age: 18 in my career, I can Born: Wymondham, Norfolk say I was a part Position: Midfield of that first team. And how about as a team – what’s been the best performance? I think it was probably against Everton because it was one

of the first games we really needed to win, being in the cup and against a WSL team. To play the way we did and for them not to have any real clear-cut chances, I think it was our best game. What’s the mood like within the squad as we reach the end of the season? We’re really close as a team so everyone is excited to be pushing towards the end of the season. Everyone’s excited at the prospect of cementing promotion and winning the league because we work so hard day in, day out. It would be nice to get a reward to show that. Looking back on your football journey, how did you start playing the game? I started playing when I was about five or six. When I was at school I was friends with mostly the boys so at break times we used to just play football. Then I joined the same team as my best friend, just a local club, and that’s how it started. This time last year, you were studying for A-levels. What were you studying and what was your favourite subject? Biology, chemistry and psychology. I didn’t have a favourite, to be honest, and I just got on with it. I went through a stage of wanting to be a forensic scientist but I think that was only because of watching things on TV! Is it true you found out United wanted to sign you the night before your chemistry exam? Yeah, it is! I got a call and that was the last thing I expected, so then it was quite hard going into that exam the next day having just been told I might be going to Manchester United!

about, I just thought it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance and grabbed at it with both hands. What has it been like since you signed last summer? It has been unreal, the experiences we have had this season is something I never thought I’d experience at 18. Even the photoshoots and filming, I’ve never done that in my life and I didn’t expect that’s what being a footballer at this club would bring, but it’s been unbelievable. Obviously the football too, training with internationals like Alex and also Siobhan day in, day out... it’s been pretty great! Casey Stoney has told us that she likes to take you all out of your comfort zones, so you’ve been doing some team challenges. Which one has been your favourite and why? Definitely the one where we held snakes and spiders because it took everyone out of their comfort zone! Even the confident ones were breaking down a bit, which was funny. It was nice to see that everyone had that side to them. The manager completed a challenge of her own recently, jumping out of a plane for charity. Is that something you’d do? I’m scared of flights and I hate flying so no, probably not! Credit to those who did it, though, but I don’t think I could.

What do you remember about that time ahead of joining the club? It was pretty surreal because I thought I had my next few years sorted – I was planning to go to Gloucester Uni and stay at Bristol for a couple of years – but when I got that call and the opportunity to go to United came

IT WAS PLANNING TO GO TO GLOUCESTER UNI BUT THEN I GOT A CALL FROM UNITED ...IT WAS PRETTY SURREAL

JORDAN NOBBS AND FARA WILLIAMS WERE MY ROLE MODELS, AND I WATCH VIDEOS OF MICHAEL CARRICK You’re part of the England squad who’ve just qualified for the U19 Euros – congratulations! How much are you looking forward to that? I’m really looking forward to going to Scotland and competing in the Euros. We’ve not been to the Euros in the squad since we were U17s so it will be exciting, plus we’ve got a really talented squad with a lot of depth so we have a good chance of doing well. It’s a World Cup qualifying year so it’s important we do well.

will also be exciting to the watch the England v Scotland game as we have a few Scotland players at United too.

You’ve also been captain with England during some international breaks too. How has that experience been? I was captain for one of the camps and vice-captain for the elite rounds. It’s been a really good experience, I like being one of the leaders so it’s nice to be respected in that way, especially as the players voted for it too.

Who have been your role models in the game over the years? Growing up, my role models in the women’s game were Jordan Nobbs and Fara Williams, because they played my position, so I always looked up to them. When I was at Bristol, I made my debut against Arsenal and I got to play against both of them so it was really cool... but also weird as I’d seen them on television and now I was playing against them. Working with Casey every day is unreal as well, seeing her career and how many accolades she has. It’s crazy to think she is my manager. In the men’s game, I’d say Michael Carrick. I often watch videos of him and how he plays too.

There’s another tournament happening this summer in France, of course. Are you looking forward to watching the seniors at the Women’s World Cup? I’m really looking forward to it. We see them around St George’s Park when we are there and it’s inspiring to watch them train. It’s going to be really good to see them bring the nation together and watch the talent in the squad. It

Away from football, what do you like to do to relax? I go to university [Aimee studies sports science part-time at Salford Uni] so I don’t really get much time off, to be honest. But when I do, I usually hang around with the people I live with, or Rambo [Emily Ramsey], just going out to eat or go to the golf or cinema – anything like that really. ⬤

RTC’S SPECIAL RECOGNITION United’s Regional Talent Club rewarded by the FA for ‘exceptional’ performance in developing girl players

United’s RTC continues to go from strength to strength

Manchester United’s FA Regional Talent Club has become the first club to earn a ‘Tier 1 Plus’ status, having been giving an extension to its license for 2019/20. The FA Regional Talent Club (RTC) is an enhanced coaching centre for girls in the U10, U12, U14 and U16 age groups, and allows players identified as having elite potential the opportunity to access appropriate levels of coaching and support. Thirty-three RTCs are spread across the country and players registered with an RTC cannot be signed to any other club. The Tier 1 Plus status has been awarded for ‘exceptional’ delivery across the Manchester United programme, which is managed by the club’s Foundation. The RTC was adjudged to be exceeding in four out of the six key elements measured by the FA, coupled with consistent delivery and performance over previous seasons. This is not the first success for the RTC, however, as historically a number of players have graduated to receive international honours, and more recently represent Manchester United Women during the team’s inaugural season. England internationals Izzy Christiansen and Gabby George both came through the United ranks while MU Women stars Katie Zelem, Kirsty Hanson, Emily Ramsey, Fran Bentley, Naomi Hartley, Ella Toone and Millie Turner all graduated from United’s RTC. Casey Stoney, MU Women’s

head coach, said: “It’s a great achievement for the RTC. My staff and I have been down there regularly and have seen first-hand the hard work and dedication involved. Promoting youth is a huge part of Manchester United’s history and runs throughout the club so to see the RTC recognised for its part in developing young females is really pleasing.” Emma Fletcher, Manchester United regional talent club manager, was equally proud of the achievement, saying: “We’ve always been confident that we do a great job but this recognition is a special time for the RTC. We’ve only had the FA licence for seven years so to gain this recognition is exciting for all involved and will make us strive to improve every season. Now we have a full-time women’s team we can start planning more strategically over five or 10 years.“ Sharon Brownlie of the FA also congratulated the club, saying: “The Regional Talent Club was adjudged to be consistently exceeding Tier 1 criteria. This is combined with consistently meeting criteria in the 2017/18 season.” For more information about Manchester United Foundation, visit www.mufoundation.org Manchester United Women v Crystal Palace Ladies 17

Did you know our no.1 Siobhan Chamberlain is also a keen photographer? She talks us through five of her top pics from recent months...

“My husband’s quite good at photography, and after stealing one of his cameras I’ve really got into it, and I’ve been using the manual settings more, to get what I want from a photo. I really like natural pictures such as this one, rather than photos of people posing. It’s been nice to catch a few of the girls off-guard on our long away trips! This is Alex taking a selfie – I think it’s just a really nicely framed shot.”

“Our training was moved to The Cliff when it snowed, as there’s an indoor pitch there, and Millie, Ella and Charlie got there before everyone else and made a big stash of snowballs to pepper everyone with as they arrived. This is Millie really going for it – she got such good height and when I looked back at the photos I thought ‘I love this one!’”

“This is Millie with her dog, Nala. I’ll be honest, I’m not much of an animal person but this dog is quite cute. It was only about 12 weeks old. Millie lives at one of the team houses and we all went out for a walk one day and I took a few pictures. I ended up doing the same with Amy Turner’s dog the other today... maybe I could find a niche as a dog photographer!”

“I went to St Andrews in Scotland with my husband recently, and the views were just gorgeous. I told him I wanted to get up at sunrise to get a photo and he looked at me as if I was mad! We did it though; we got up and went for a walk and I got this picture. There’s no filter or anything on it – I really like it.”

“I’ve got loads of pictures of Martha and Amy as we always sit in the same seats for away trips, but Millie’s with them here as she gets around the coach... she’s the busiest person alive! They asked for a picture but after I said I didn’t want them just smiling they all ended up laughing at the situation! A lot of the girls want their picture taken now – they like having good content for their social media, so if someone’s taking the pictures then it’s the perfect match!”

THE VISITORS

Dean Davenport’s side have endured a challenging first term at this level, but their future is promising...

I

t’s been a tough inaugural campaign in the second flight so far for the Eagles, who saw their initial bid to join the Championship dismissed last year, before gaining entry after the late withdrawal of Doncaster Belles. Despite some encouraging performances – including the 7-2 rout of London Bees in the League Cup, and a spirited narrow defeat to Tottenham in December – the south Londoners have struggled for consistency. The club has come a long way in the last decade, however, and their ability to compete strongly in the majority of their Championship games bodes well for the future. And with no relegation from the division this season, even a 10th-place finish should enable them to plan for another crack at the second tier in 2019/20. Palace also have a loyal and vocal following, underlining just how much momentum and passion the club has behind it. Manager Dean Davenport – whose daughter Jade also plays for his side – is confident the future is bright. “I’ve been with the club for 15 years, starting with the little ones. I just want to put the ladies’ team on the map, and I think we’re doing that.”

But the 30-year-old midfielder is enjoying a “refreshing” experience at Palace, with her only regret surrounding the club’s lack of preparation time after their unexpected promotion to the second flight: “Finding out that late has hindered our progress,” she admits. “We’ve got some talented players but perhaps we lack that experience we could have targeted if we’d known at the start of the summer.” league this season – despite a defensive record which makes them the division’s seventh-best – which recently compelled Davenport to convince former striker Gemma Bryan to return from a spell with Charlton. Bryan scored three times in five games upon her return in January (adding to her tally of over 100 goals in three previous seasons at the club), adding some much-needed firepower and experience to the forward line. They head into today’s game with just two wins in their last seven matches in all competitions, but Casey Stoney’s team will be well aware that they are more than capable of proving obdurate opposition, especially with Bryan back on the team-sheet.
