LEICESTER GAME POSTPONEMENT
FA CUP IS ON THE HORIZON
Last Sunday’s scheduled away fixture at Leicester was postponed as a result of the helicopter crash outside the King Power Stadium the previous evening, which claimed the lives of five people, including Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Our thoughts are with everyone connected to the victims and Leicester City Football Club. A newly arranged date for this Championship game will be announced in due course.
The Reds won’t be in action next weekend on account of November’s international break, but further down the women’s football pyramid, 30 clubs will be competing in the first round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup, with Cambridge City v Cambridge United, and Norton & Stockton Ancients v Bolton Wanderers among the 15 ties. All teams in the WSL and Championship enter the 2018/19 competition at the fourth-round stage, to be held in February.

elcome to Leigh Sports Village where today we welcome Tottenham Hotspur. Firstly, our thoughts and condolences are with all at Leicester City Football Club at this very sad time. Given the circumstances, it was only right to postpone our game last Sunday. When things like this happen, it puts football into perspective. The outpouring of love we’ve seen from the football family since just goes to show, it doesn’t matter your colours, everyone comes together. Given it was our turn to miss a fixture the week before, it meant we only had one game in October. Building momentum and consistency is hard when games are few and far between, and another international break is coming up, but this is something we need to deal with. Though we won our last match, there were elements of our performance against Charlton I wasn’t entirely happy with. We tried to force the play too much and were sloppy in possession, especially in the first half. Something we have been working on a lot over the last couple of weeks is patience in our play. We don’t have to win the game in the first 10 minutes; it might be in the 60th or 70th minute,
04 Manchester United Women v Tottenham Hotspur Ladies
but what we’ve got to make sure of is that the openings are there. If we give the ball away as we did against Charlton, we will get punished. All we can do is make sure we are working hard on the training ground and the players have certainly been doing that. We have also had an in-house 11 v 11 match, though there is nothing like playing in front of a crowd, with pressure and, of course, the expectation to win. Set pieces have been high on the agenda, too. During our games we’ve had over 40 corners but haven’t scored from one! I’m setting the players the challenge to make the most of set pieces. Amy Turner in particular was in the right areas against Charlton but just didn’t quite get the right contact on the day. We’re getting closer, though. Amy has been fantastic for us, as has Millie Turner – they have provided a solid foundation for us to build on. Since we last played, we have become part of the ‘chasing pack’. Spurs are a good side and top the table for a reason. But with that position comes the pressure to stay there. We are going to have to be at our very best to get past them, but we’re more than capable of doing so. Enjoy the game.
ALL WE CAN DO IS MAKE SURE WE ARE WORKING HARD ON THE TRAINING GROUND AND THE PLAYERS HAVE CERTAINLY BEEN DOING THAT Manchester United Women v Charlton Atheltic Women 03

After the frustration of the draw against Durham, United returned to winning ways at home with a 3-0 victory against Charlton – Katie Zelem, Jess Sigsworth and Lizzie Arnot providing the goals. United were without Championship Player of the Month Lauren James, who was away on international duty, but dominated from start to finish and could have been ahead after three minutes as Amy Turner, getting on the end of Zelem’s teasing corner, headed just over. The Reds’ possession and pressure on Charlton was rewarded after 15 minutes though. Alex Greenwood found Zelem on the edge of the area and the no.10’s excellent turn gave her room to pick her spot and fire a precise left-footed effort past visiting goalkeeper Katie Startup. Casey Stoney’s side continued to dominate and seemed to have scored a second goal when Kirsty Hanson’s instinctive improvisation found the net. The 20-year-old brilliantly backheeled an effort in from Greenwood’s cross, but the flag was up for offside. Charlton’s attacking efforts were limited by an excellent United defence, but it could easily have been level at the break, as Liz Ejupi’s header hit the crossbar before being gathered by Siobhan Chamberlain. The second half started much the same as the first, with United pushing forward and looking to be more clinical. Sigsworth applied a ‘third-time-lucky’ finish to a passage of play 10 minutes
Zelem’s left-foot finish opened the goals on 15 minutes
into the second half that saw the Reds hit the crossbar twice. Mollie Green (below) put in a cross that found Lizzie Arnot, who headed an effort on to the bar – as did Sigsworth from the loose ball – but the rebound fell kindly for Sigsworth to fire in a volley from the follow-up. Set-pieces were a constant threat and Amy Turner headed a second chance over before having another effort cleared off the line. But Arnot wrapped up the points soon after when a shot from Ella Toone – on for Aimee Palmer – was saved but only into Arnot’s path, and she tapped the ball home.

THE CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

ast Saturday was such a sad day for football; on behalf of all the players, our prayers are with the Leicester City family, and we’d also like to send our best wishes to Glenn Hoddle for a speedy recovery. As a team, we are looking forward to getting back on the pitch today, three weeks after we took on Charlton here. Looking back at that day, we were happy with the win but we were also incredibly lucky not to concede. We know there are areas we need to improve on from that game but three points was the most important thing. Having said that, we saw two brilliant goals from Katie Zelem and Jess Sigsworth, plus a trademark Lizzie Arnot tap-in... she loves a tap-in! I’ve given her some stick about that, but fair play to her, she gets into the right places at the right time. It is part of our game plan for wingers to get into the box, to be there for crosses from the other side and Lizzie’s work ethic allows her to finish those chances off. A few key individuals were missing last time we played at Leigh, too. Four members of the squad – Lauren James, Naomi Hartley, Fran Bentley and Lucy Roberts – were away on international duty with England. Although they are young, they form such a big part of our squad so we felt their absence. We are so
Lizzie’s been getting herself into some great positions in the box
fortunate to have such talented players such as these ready to step in when needed if others are away. Not every Championship team is so lucky. Whoever takes to the pitch today, we’ll be ready for Tottenham. I’ve been keeping an eye on their results and been really impressed. They are a team who perhaps weren’t expected to be up there challenging for promotion but the start they have had has been brilliant, winning every game and topping the table. It’s our biggest match of the season so far, and we’re excited to be playing in front of what I’m sure will be a great crowd again.

Having battled back from serious injury two years ago to become one of the most prolific no.9s in the country, Jess Sigsworth tells us she’s now chasing even bigger targets... Happy 24th birthday for last month, Jess – bet you were delighted to celebrate it with a goal the following day... Yeah, it was perfect. To get a goal and the three points against Charlton, it couldn’t have been a better weekend. After scoring five away to Villa, I just couldn’t get the ball in the net for a few games. I’ve had a few unlucky moments in front of goal, so when my header hit the bar against Charlton I was thinking, ‘oh, not again’, so I was really relieved to score from the rebound... as you probably saw from my celebrations! Yes, Kirsty Hanson warned us you celebrate every goal as if it’s a last-minute winner, and we’ve since seen that for ourselves! That’s right! [laughs]. When the ball hits the back of the net I’m so relieved, I forget everything else. I can be a mad-head when it comes to celebrations! Even against Villa

when we were into double figures, to score another goal was still the best feeling. The goalless draw against Durham must have been particularly frustrating, then... It was, plus it was the final game before the international break, so we knew we had a bit of a wait to put it right. We knew we had to be more clinical v Charlton, and we put in a decent team performance, took our chances and won 3-0, so we were pleased with that. You haven’t always been a goal-hungry no.9 though, have you... No, I played on the wing until the second half of last season [while at Doncaster Rovers Belles] so I’m still quite new to the position, but I feel I’ve really taken to it. I feel more involved now, and I can see myself staying there. It was [then Belles manager] Neil Redfearn who moved me up top. We gave it a go, I learned the role, and finished the season with 15 goals. Hopefully I can beat that number this season. I’m quietly confident.
You’ve come back brilliantly since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in 2016. Just how difficult a period was that? It was absolutely terrible. I got injured against Birmingham when the ball was played back to their keeper and I tried to chase it down. As I planted my foot down I just felt this intense pain, but I was in such a state of shock I told the physio I was all right and tried to play on... it was only when I tried to run on it again that I knew. I had an operation later that summer but I never felt it was right, and my rehab didn’t seem to be working, with my leg getting skinnier. Things got so bad that I was more focused on basic movements like getting up the stairs than playing football, but thankfully the second operation was a success. I had to have some manipulation, and some bone was taken out, which was stopping my leg straightening. After that I lived in the gym, and I was fortunate to be able to have rehab at St George’s [Park] – without that it could have been a struggle to get back.

CASEY IS STRICT, SHE DOESN’T ALLOW ANY NONSENSE!
The striker was unstoppable in our league opener away to Aston Villa, scoring five goals
You’ve clearly improved even more as a player since returning from that year-long absence. Which areas of your game would you say have progressed the most in that time? After an injury like that out of nowhere, it just made me realise that I should play every game like it’s my last one. That alone has made me hungrier to achieve everything I possibly can in the game. Physically I’ve always been good at getting around the pitch, and I think I’m good at pressing opponents, but Casey and the coaches at United are improving me in other ways. I understand the game more now. Just how much have you enjoyed playing under Casey this season? Casey is a great manager. She’s strict, though, and doesn’t allow any nonsense! The international break was good for me because all the players who were still here, like me, got to work with her in one-to-one sessions. We did a lot of work on my finishing and positioning, which really benefited me.
Having represented England at U17, U19, U20 and U23 level, how eager are you to make the step up to the senior squad? When you move through the age groups, it makes you even hungrier to make the senior team. You’ve got the taste, and all the time you’re imagining what it would be like to play at a senior World Cup or Euros for England. You never know what could happen but I think next year’s World Cup is too ambitious for me. The manager [Phil Neville] has got his select group of forwards in mind, who he’s been working with for a while, and that’s fair enough. I’ve just turned 24 so there’s still time for me – the 2021 Euros are set to be held in England, which would be amazing to be a part of. How have you settled into life in Manchester since moving down from Doncaster? What do you do to unwind away from the football? I’m really enjoying it. I’m in a shared house with Katie Zelem and Martha Harris, and it’s great. We’ve got a PlayStation 4 on the way, so we plan to start having FIFA nights – that’s how we’ll be unwinding! We couldn’t help but notice how good you are at replying to fan comments on Twitter, as well as signing autographs after games. Have you enjoyed all the extra attention since joining the club? I think we’ve all enjoyed it. We’re so grateful to those who come to games, and it’s been really nice to be able to give something back, and

SPURS ARE A PHYSICAL SIDE WHO NEVER GIVE UP speak to the fans who stick around after the game. On social media, yes, I always try and reply back, although I don’t have quite as many followers as some of the other players so it’s a bit easier to do that! Which game have you most enjoyed being involved in so far this season? I absolutely loved the first game, away to Liverpool in the [Continental Tyres] cup. After a six-week wait, to finally get out there, along with the rivalry between the clubs, plus the fact that we won, it was really special. Looking ahead to today’s game – Spurs have had a great start to the season
also. Do you know much about them? I faced Spurs for Doncaster last season and they are a physical side who never give up. Their winning run will give them plenty of confidence so we’ll need to be at our best. You were nominated for September’s Championship Player of the Month alongside Spurs’ Sarah Wiltshire, as well as eventual winner Lauren James. How proud were you of that achievement? To get that nomination for the first month of the season made me really proud. I think Lauren was a worthy winner though. To do what she’s been doing, having just turned 17, is incredible. For me, I know I have a lot to work on still, and to get recognition like this just makes me want to improve even more. Is Leigh Sports Village starting to feel like home for the team now? It is. It’s a really nice stadium – the seats are even the right colour! – and we’ve also enjoyed training here in the week this season. The fans seem to feel more at home with each game too. There are a few mad fans, who we love! They have different chants for different players, and they’ve been getting more and more other fans involved. That’s great to see. Full-back Martha Harris was a teenage star at Lincoln Ladies, and she went on to build on her promise at Liverpool, becoming the inaugural winner of the PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year award in 2014. While on Merseyside, Harris picked up a WSL winner’s medal, while gaining Champions League experience. Now part of Manchester’s Reds, the 24-year-old has made four appearances to date, and has hardly put a foot wrong as United have kept clean sheets in each of these games.

ounded in 1985 as Broxbourne Ladies, the club gained permission to adopt the Tottenham Hotspur name in 1991. Thanks to the tireless work of chairman Glenn Weaver, who received a posthumous award for his ‘outstanding contribution to community football’ following his death in 2015, as well as a legion of volunteers, the club has grown to be one of the largest female football operations in London, running eight junior sides and three senior teams. The current campaign is just their second in tier two, but the Lilywhites finished a commendable seventh during their inaugural season at this level. And to say they’ve kicked on this year would be an understatement: a late penalty from prolific 20-year-old striker Rianna Dean earned them

a narrow 2-1 comeback win over Aston Villa last weekend, extending their perfect start to 2018/19 to six games. Karen Hills’ side are the only team to have won every match in the division, and only United have scored more goals than their 16. That said, today’s visit to Leigh Sports Village will be Spurs’ first match against a side from the current top four, and thus their biggest test to date. But the north Londoners have pedigree from last term when it comes to facing elite opposition: they overcame two top-flight sides, Yeovil and Bristol City, in last season’s League Cup. “We have to go there [to United] and show what we’re about,” says Ashleigh Neville, Spurs’ Player of the Year for 2017/18. “We’re six games unbeaten at the start of the season, so it’s not a bad run.” And today’s visitors have plenty more talent in their ranks to help them match the very best. Midfielder-cum-forward and Welsh international Sarah Wiltshire has attracted plenty of plaudits (see right), while Coral Jade-Haines is now part of the England U23 set-up. Elsewhere, the aforementioned Dean sits atop the Championship scoring charts, with eight goals from just six appearances – two clear of our own Jess Sigsworth. Dean’s haul includes a highly impressive hat-trick against her former club Millwall two weeks ago, as Spurs ran out 8-0 victors in what’s been their result of the season to date. Hills’ outfit have scored in every match they’ve played in 2018/19, and have scored fewer than two goals in one solitary match in all competitions (a League Cup tie with Crystal Palace). With that in mind – along with United’s free-scoring start to life in the division – all roads point towards an entertaining match between two clubs with historic reputations for creative, attacking football.

Now in her 10th season leading the north London club, Hills has overseen significant development during the past decade. She has led the club to two promotions and created what insiders describe as a ‘family-like connection’ with her staff. Hills has garnered praise not just for helping her players improve as footballers, but for her human touch and the desire to leave a legacy that, in her words, “inspires, empowers and emboldens women to get on the pitch”. Of her current crop, she says: “We have the strongest squad we’ve ever had. People can see the excitement and the adventure here and they want to be a part of that.”
A star of Spurs’ fledgling campaign at this level, the Welsh forward was nominated for September’s Championship Player of the Month award. Comfortable at the sharp end of the attack, or as a creative attacking midfielder, the ex-Yeovil player has a deadly ability when shooting from distance, but is also a great creator for her team-mates. A lifelong Spurs supporter, Wiltshire was the club’s joint top-scorer in the league last year and has taken to life as a Lilywhite with relish. “I’d love to stay here until I can’t play anymore,” admits the 27-year-old. “I want to help them get to the top level and be part of the squad for as long as possible.”
