THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN

We’re all excited about the team’s first knockout tie, and tonight we’ll need your support more than ever

G

ood evening and welcome back to Leigh Sports Village where tonight we welcome a new opponent in West Ham United. Finishing top of our group in the League Cup was a brilliant achievement. There might have been some who wouldn’t have expected us to get out of our group – a group containing three teams from the top division – let alone win it. It just goes to show how far we have come in such a short space of time. The squad is made up of incredible players, incredible people, and they absolutely deserved it. Winning the group meant our quarter-final tie would be a home tie and we’re really pleased to be able to play here in front of you again. We get the best crowds in the league and we have the best fans – and we’ll need you tonight for our first ever knockout match as a team. We have taken a lot of confidence from previous results in the competition, especially the two wins over FAWSL sides Liverpool and Everton. The Everton match in particular, we didn’t just win it, it was a comfortable victory and a return to keeping a clean sheet. I’m a big believer in building solid foundations at the back to give you a platform

for everything else and Millie and Amy Turner have been superb at providing that foundation. The way they work together reminds me of the partnership Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic forged. Both work really hard, are incredibly diligent and they’re at the top of their game. As well as being solid at the back, we’re going to have to be at our very best across the team if we are to progress through to the semi-final tonight. If you’re going to win any competition you need to beat the best teams and West Ham, who ended 2018 in sixth place in the FAWSL, will clearly be tough opponents. In our first season as a team, it would be massive to progress even further. We have the mantra of ‘crawl, walk, run’ – and this is us still crawling! If we make it through to a semi-final this season, we’ll probably be exceeding expectations for our first season, but this group wants to exceed expectations, and as staff we want to push them and prepare them to be able to do that. We know we’ve still got a long way to go and lots to improve on but we’re definitely in a good position. Enjoy the game!

BEES STUNG FOR NINE ! It’s a perfect start to the new year for the Reds, with Devlin, Toone and James all at the double

United Women began 2019 in devastating fashion by beating London Bees 9-0 at Leigh Sports Village in the Championship. The Reds ran riot with first-half goals from Charlie Devlin, Ella Toone, Lizzie Arnot and Mollie Green. Devlin and Toone added to their goal tallies after the break, with substitute Lauren James also grabbing a brace and Katie Zelem adding a ninth from the penalty spot. With United set for the first of three games in a week, Casey Stoney made three changes to her line-up, bringing in Toone, Arnot and Devlin for James, Amy Turner and Leah Galton, and the team took the lead inside two minutes. Green’s effort from close range hit the post, but Devlin was on hand to follow in on the rebound. Toone doubled the lead through a fantastic team goal. Zelem started the move off with a short free-kick to Green, who spread the ball wide to Devlin. Our no.14 calmly crossed for Toone, who had an empty net to finish into. Stoney’s side put the game to bed before the interval with two strikes inside two minutes. First, Arnot slotted home at the far post from a brilliant cross by Kirsty Hanson. Moments

Zelem puts the seal on a good afternoon’s work

Devlin shows off some moves after finding the target

later, United pounced on a defensive error and Green was on hand to slot home. A fifth goal followed just before the hour mark after Devlin was played through and was one-on-one with Bees’ keeper Sarah Quantrill. The keeper did get a touch to Devlin’s shot, but could not prevent the ball from trickling in. The hosts weren’t finished there, making it 6-0 after James produced a superb through ball to Hanson, who delivered a perfect low cross into the box for Toone to fire home. James then got in on the act as she charged into the box and confidently lashed the ball into the net. James soon scored United’s eighth, as she was played through by Toone before holding off a defender to score. The ninth came from the penalty spot, after United won a spot-kick when Devlin was adjudged to have been fouled inside the area. Set-piece specialist Zelem made no mistake as she passed the ball into the net to complete the rout. IT WAS SUCH A BRILLIANT ACHIEVEMENT TO WIN WHAT WAS ARGUABLY THE TOUGHEST GROUP IN THE COMPETITION

Alex Greenwood

THE CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

T

onight is another milestone for us as a team – our first ever knockout game as a group. It’s amazing to be part of another piece of the club’s history and we want to keep adding to those achievements too. We’re focused on the challenge ahead as we prepare to face FAWSL side West Ham. We know what it takes to beat FAWSL teams though, having done so twice in the group stage. It was such a brilliant achievement for us to win what was arguably the toughest group in the competition – and to finish above three top-flight teams in the process. We’ll take a lot of confidence from the results against Liverpool and Everton in particular. It’s always nice to beat local rivals but we’re not dwelling on that. We’ll take the lessons from them to help us in our drive to push our standards to even greater heights in 2019. Our last outing in the competition was probably our best performance. The ‘Turner Sisters’ – as we like to call Amy and Millie! – were so reliable at the back, and I also want to give a shoutout to Mollie Green, who had a fantastic end to 2018. She has high expectations of herself and is working so hard to achieve her goals. That hard work is paying off and I’m really excited for her to kick on this year.

Wins against Liverpool and Everton will give us belief as we take on another FAWSL side tonight

It takes the whole squad to be successful, though. We couldn’t do it without each other: the coaching staff who prepare us so well before every game and all 21 of the players, each one of whom is crucial to our ambitions. As a club, Manchester United is about cup finals and winning trophies. We’re not putting too much pressure on ourselves but we want to go as far as we possibly can in this competition and to be a part of the biggest occasions, which we hope you will enjoy with us along the way. Come on you Reds! Manchester United Women v West Ham United Women 09

Lizzie Arnot was at it again on Sunday, our poacher supreme popping up at the far post to find the net. As well as crucial two-yard tap-ins, here United’s no.17 discusses the team’s preparations for tonight’s important League Cup tie... Happy new year, Lizzie. How eager are you to get back out on the pitch after the festive break? After every match we can’t wait for the next one, so even though it’s been nice to have a break over Christmas, we’re really excited to be back on the pitch again. It’s going to be a big year. Over Christmas I went back home to Edinburgh. It was LIZZIE’S nice to get a break with family, and some of the United STATISTICS girls came to visit too. Some of them had never been Age: 22 Born: Edinburgh before so it was nice to be able to show them around.

Position: Forward Previous clubs: 2006-08 Edinburgh City; 2008-11 Hutchison Vale; 2012-18 Hibernian International career: Scotland (17 caps, 0 goals)

How excited is everyone for this quarter-final? We’re so excited! We’re a team that wants to challenge for the cups and this is our first opportunity to do so. We’ve competed well against top-flight teams previously – our performance against Everton was particularly good – and ultimately that’s where we’re aiming to be so the more games we have like this the better.

Would you say this is the team’s biggest game yet? The fact that it’s a knockout makes it a big game – if we win we’re one step closer. We’ve had some big games in the build up to this one, but it’s definitely up there.

It could go to extra-time and penalties tonight – are spot-kicks something you prepare for and discuss in training? We haven’t been making a point of practising for this game in particular but we do sometimes have a shoot-out in training if two teams have drawn, so we’re not afraid of penalties if it comes down to that. Who’s the best penalty-taker in training? That’s a tough one. Obviously Alex is up there. Zel too. I feel like a few of us are pretty consistent so that’s good. Hopefully we can take that into the game... if we need to! Have you taken a competitive penalty kick before? Yeah, I used to be the penalty taker at Hibs so I’ll definitely volunteer if it gets to that point. I’m used to that sort of pressure. I’ll be ready. Do you know much about any of West Ham players we could face tonight? I play with Jane Ross at Scotland so I know how much of a threat she is. She is very strong and if she gets chances, she’ll score. How would you sum up your 2018 within the context of your career? I’d say 2018 was the biggest year so far for me, getting my first professional contract. I needed to move away from home to achieve my dream which was a big step – I’d never been away from home before. Adapting to that has been difficult at times but the support from the club and my team-mates has been amazing. I couldn’t be in a better place. You spent six years at Hibs before joining United last summer. What were your highlights of your time there? Winning the Scottish Cup and the League Cup was brilliant. It would have been nice to win the league but retaining the League Cup in May by beating Celtic 9-0 was incredible.

I NEEDED TO MOVE AWAY FROM HOME TO ACHIEVE MY DREAM... AND I COULDN’T BE IN A BETTER PLACE I learnt how to be resilient, putting everything into every rehab session because you need to put the work in to see the results you want, to get back as soon as possible. It made me realise I could push myself even further, that what I thought were my limits weren’t. My advice would be to not look too far ahead, but make sure you have a focus and a goal to try and get back. Little steps and targets along the way definitely help but ultimately it’s about working hard and doing everything you possibly can so you have no regrets.

You suffered an ACL injury in 2017 and were out for over a year. Unfortunately, it’s such a common injury in women’s football – what did you learn during that time? Do you have any words of advice for anyone with the same injury? I was very lucky with the support I received.

What are your aims for 2019 – both with club and country given it is now World Cup year? There are so many things to look forward to. With United, our main priority is to win the league and go as far as we can in the cup competitions. With Scotland, it would be amazing to be a part of the squad to go to the World Cup in the summer. In tonight’s competition, you scored the first ever goal for United Women, away to Liverpool. Describe how that felt... To be honest it was totally surreal. I still can’t believe that it actually happened. I was lucky to be in the right position and on the end of the great cross from Alex. We wanted to start well and win in any way possible... it came off my shin but we didn’t care! You’ve developed quite a reputation for being in the right place at the right time – the tap-in queen! What would you put that down to? I give all the credit to the girls who set me up because they do all the hard work! Having said that, you really do need to know when to make those runs into the box to give us the best possible chance of scoring. We work on it in training and I’m just lucky that I’ve been the one on the end of them. Martha Harris told us that she hates playing against you in training! What would you say your main strengths are? I like to take people on one v one. When I was younger I worked really hard on using both feet. That’s paying off now because I can go either way, which makes it difficult for defenders.

Bamboozling the opposition against Crystal Palace

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I WORKED REALLY HARD ON USING BOTH FEET. THAT’S PAYING OFF NOW BECAUSE I CAN GO EITHER WAY a back-up just in case but I was incredibly lucky timing-wise. Everything worked out really well for me to finish my degree there last year and then make the move to Manchester.

A teenager with a bright future in the game, Ebony Salmon has gone on loan to Sheffield United Women for the rest of the 2018/19 season, it was announced last week. The livewire forward – who will celebrate her 18th birthday later this month – captained England’s U17s at the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship last May, shortly before joining United from Aston Villa. The club wishes Ebony all the best for her loan spell in the months ahead as she continues her development.

THE VISITORS Matt Beard’s Hammers ended 2018 in formidable fashion, but the fixtures list looks tougher in January

T

he Hammers ended 2018 on the crest of a wave with four consecutive wins, their goals-for and goals-against columns reading an extremely healthy 10 scored and none conceded across those pre-Christmas fixtures. The team’s encouraging first Women’s Super League campaign continued (they successfully applied to join the top flight last summer) with an enticing match-up against high-flying Arsenal on Sunday, an end-to-end encounter the Hammers lost 4-2 at home, having taken an early lead before going in level at 2-2 at the break – forward Jane Ross netting both goals for Matt Beard’s side. It was West Ham’s last meeting with Arsenal, in September, that first highlighted their heavy-hitting potential, however. The Irons went 2-1 up through a Kate Longhurst brace and, though West Ham eventually lost 4-3, they remain the only side to put three past the table-topping Gunners this season.

The east London side – renamed West Ham United Women (from West Ham Ladies) in the summer – took a while to find consistency in the top division, though, with just one win in their opening five games, including a 7-1 thrashing by Manchester City. But as autumn began they got into their groove, the Hammers’ five league wins to date placing them securely in mid-table. Such was their form heading into Christmas, two players were nominated for the FAWSL’s Player of the Month award for December: German midfielder Julia Simic and Swiss forward Alisha Lehmann.

DE GRAAF OUT FOR SEASON

With their 2019 league campaign under way and a League Cup quarter-final to look forward to tonight, club captain Gilly Flaherty believes she and her team-mates are ready to make further strides in the months ahead. “We had a lot of momentum at the end of last year,” said Flaherty during the festive hiatus, “but I think the break came at the right time for us. Getting those four wins was excellent and we’re ready to go again now.” The only current blight on the horizon is the news that forward Esmee de Graaf will miss the rest of the campaign, after suffering an ACL injury during a training session. Republic of Ireland international Leanne Kiernan (hamstring) and Erin Simon (knee) have also been dealing with complaints, but both returned to the substitutes’ bench on Sunday. The calendar year certainly starts intriguingly for Beard’s Hammers, with today’s Continental Tyres League Cup trip to Leigh Sports Village sandwiched between the Arsenal clash and the visit of fellow title contenders Manchester City to the Irons’ Rush Green Stadium home. “It’s a really competitive start to 2019,” admits Beard.

M A N A G E R: Matt Beard

O N E TO WATC H: Alisha Lehmann

A hugely respected coach who was named WSL Manager of the Year for two consecutive years – after leading Liverpool to back-to-back titles – the Londoner joined West Ham in June. Beard has since acquitted himself well with the tough task of establishing his team in the top flight, despite his squad being stretched by injuries. “I’m hoping we have got through that period now, and Christmas gave our girls a bit of a chance to have a rest and recover,” said the 40-year-old, who has also managed Chelsea Women (2009-12) and US side Boston Breakers (2016-17). “All of our work has paid off and I am really excited for the second half of the season.”

A 19-year-old with four goals in her last six games, forward Lehmann arrived in London last summer from BSC Young Boys Frauen, after impressing manager Beard while representing Switzerland in the Women’s U19 Championships. Lehmann is now shining on both the domestic and senior international stage, and it was her goal and assist that powered the Irons past Charlton in the last round of the cup. Nominated for WSL Player of the Month for December, the Reds’ defence will need to keep an eye out for both her goalscoring prowess and creative spark if Casey Stoney’s side are to progress to the semi-finals at the Hammers’ expense.
