ello and welcome to Leigh Sports Village for a historic first home fixture for this team. The mood in the squad has been very positive this week after the Liverpool game, and I have to say that victory was up there as one of the best moments of my career. To be head coach for a professional team’s first game, and then to win it, makes me so proud of what we have all achieved in just a few weeks – and I include all the amazing staff around me within that. On the pitch, our togetherness impressed me most – 21 strangers were thrown together at the start of summer, and we stuck together, we got the goal late on, and the celebrations said it all about the unity in the group. Lizzie Arnot is a lifelong United fan so there couldn’t have been a better player to get the winner. Lizzie’s workrate is phenomenal – her GPS outputs in training are unbelievable at times – and it was a big thing for her to come down here from Scotland, so I was really pleased for her. We’d also been working all week on the wide players cutting in from the opposite side and it paid off, so that really pleased me too. When the game’s on, I’ll tweak a few things with substitutes

and tactical changes, but I have to trust the players on the pitch. I want them to be able to play with freedom, and to make mistakes, and to be able to learn, and they aren’t going to be able to do that if I’m on touchline constantly telling them what to do. My job is to help make sure they are ready. We do our planning all week so that come matchday it’s about them. We weren’t at our best against Liverpool – we played better in pre-season – but we won and it shows there is much more to come from this team. This week we had a recovery day on Monday, then on Tuesday we had some analysis of the Liverpool game, before the focus turned to Reading. Kelly Chambers’ side will expect to compete for trophies this season, so it’s a big test for our young stars. We might not dominate the ball today, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hurt them. A good crowd is expected for today’s game, and that’s what the players signed up for when they joined one of the biggest football clubs in the world. We know that if we can put in a good performance this afternoon you fans will want to come back. Enjoy the game.

Sunday’s League Cup opener has a glorious finale
LIVERPOOL WOMEN 0 UNITED WOMEN 1 CONTINENTAL TYRES LEAGUE CUP | PRENTON PARK | SCORER: ARNOT (83) | ATT: 829
A fiercely competitive first match for United Women, away to Liverpool, saw the Reds seal a historic victory in the FA Continental Tyres League Cup clash, thanks to a late Lizzie Arnot goal. An end-to-end group match against Neil Redfearn’s top-flight outfit ended in delight for United thanks to Arnot’s winner on 83 minutes. Alex Greenwood, a constant threat down the left, put a cross on a plate for someone to tap in, and Arnot duly obliged. Casey Stoney’s side dominated the first 20 minutes with early chances falling for former Hibernian winger Arnot and Jess Sigsworth, but both efforts went just wide. Siobhan Chamberlain was rarely troubled in the first half despite Liverpool’s high pressing. Calm under pressure, United’s defensive unit played out from the back whenever possible. Set-pieces looked as though they may prove pivotal, with Katie Zelem and Greenwood the providers as United pushed for the opener. Amy Turner failed to get a toe on Zelem’s tempting free-kick and Sigsworth headed just wide from Greenwood’s corner. United captain Greenwood then stung the palms of Liverpool goalkeeper Anke Preuss with a fine free-kick, before Arnot played in
Sigsworth. Last season’s FA WSL2 top scorer saw her low drive again saved by Preuss, as the sides went in level at half-time. Liverpool grew into the game after the break, though; Courtney Sweetman-Kirk, on at half-time, was soon into the action, trying her luck from range but her shot sailed just over. Leah Galton replaced Hanson close to the hour mark and could have scored United’s opener. One-on-one after good work from Sigsworth on the edge of the area, the ball fell kindly for the 24-year-old, but Preuss came out on top. Shortly after, it was Chamberlain’s turn to impress one-on-one, as she made an excellent low save from Sweetman-Kirk’s shot. Arnot’s goal came after a sustained period of Liverpool pressure and the home side nearly responded immediately. Christie Murray’s low free-kick beat Chamberlain but rattled the United post, skimmed along the line and away. Having overcome the late scare, Stoney’s side composed themselves in the final minutes and stood strong to claim all three points. United Women: Chamberlain; Smith, A Turner, M Turner, Greenwood; Green (Toone 45), Zelem, James (Devlin 89); Arnot, Sigsworth, Hanson (Galton 59)

here were a few nerves in the dressing room before the game last Sunday, but I was pleased to see that. After everything that’s happened over the past six weeks, to finally take to the pitch and make history for this football club, the nerves were perfectly normal alongside all the excitement. Of course for me, I was up against my old team, but it didn’t feel strange – Liverpool had a new-look team as well, so I was only focused on leading our girls out and doing my job. It really did feel like the goal was coming as the game went on, and what a moment when it went in! I was absolutely delighted for Lizzie. She’s had some tough luck in the past through injury, but she works so hard and is a very down-to-earth girl. I was pleased to get an assist, too – I’d like to get on the scoresheet a bit more than I usually do this season, but to set up a goal as important as that, I was buzzing to see Lizzie get on the end of it. Everyone played their part, but I see Lauren James has had a fair bit of attention since Sunday, as the youngest member of the squad. She was fantastic against Liverpool. Lauren goes about her business off the pitch very quietly, but she’s a very confident girl, and at 16 has the potential to be someone very special in the game – and what an environment this is for her to develop her game.
We really appreciated the fans who travelled to Prenton Park last weekend, but I’m sure there will be many more here in Leigh today for our first home match. It’s going to be a great occasion, although we know Reading are an experienced team with big expectations this season. Fara Williams scored a hat-trick in this competition last weekend, and she’s someone I know very well from the England set-up. Any friendships will go out the window at 12pm though – we all really want to win this one.

Let’s head back to early July, when Casey Stoney and her newly created squad donned the United kit for the first time in front of the cameras...

5am start, boxing, a gruelling morning of pre-season training and an eight-hour media session: it’s all in a day’s work for Manchester United Women. The 21-strong squad – who only met as a group for the first time the previous week – arrived in Stretford following training for the club media day in early July, ready to put on the famous red kit for the first time as United players. Split into three groups (defenders in one, midfielders in the next, with strikers and keepers together in the third), all the various demands put to them were completed with smiles on their faces... unless the request came in to put their game-face on! From posing for official headshots to reenacting their signature celebrations (for GIF purposes, of course), there was

wait to see how far the team can go. “We’ve only known each other for about a week so, taking that into consideration, I think we’ve all gelled so well,” she said. “Everyone around us at the photoshoot was saying we look like we’ve been mates for years. Everyone’s just so excited and can’t wait to get started. The journey is just going to be incredible and we’re going to make history.” Fellow midfielder Mollie Green added: “There are a lot of good personalities in the squad and good people behind the players. I knew quite a few of them before I came here but I’m really excited to meet everyone and to see what they’re bringing to the table.” Handpicked by Casey Stoney and her team for their character, talent and winning behaviours, they were clearly enjoying being a part of this journey from the very beginning. For some, it is a return to the club they have been dreaming of; the likes of Katie Zelem, who joined United aged eight, re-signed as a 22-year-old having won Serie A with Juventus last season and back-to-back FAWSL titles with Liverpool (2013 and 2014). For others, it was an opportunity they just couldn’t turn down. Established England

an excitement that was contagious, and a professionalism that was impressive. There was a palpable, steely focus among the squad and a togetherness many long-established teams would be proud of, as the newly assembled squad laughed and joked with each other in down-time between activities. The entire squad had been itching to get started and couldn’t hide how much they enjoyed being part of the club. “We’ve had a couple of days of pre-season training and I can already see the standards are up there,” said centre-back Amy Turner. “Even days like this today, it’s so professional and everything’s done properly. I can’t wait to see where this club goes. I’m really excited to get started now.” Forward Leah Galton echoed the thoughts of her new team-mate, saying: “The first week has been really good. I didn’t think it would be this easy to get to know the girls but we’ve gelled well together already after just three or four days. One of my aims this season is to get to know everyone really well, both on the field and off the field.” Millie Turner felt the players had already got to know each other well and cannot

players Siobhan Chamberlain and Alex Greenwood – United’s captain – add significant domestic and international experience to a young squad eager to hit the ground running. “It’s the biggest club in the world,” said goalkeeper Chamberlain. “I don’t think there really needs to be any second thought as to why you should join Manchester United. It’s an incredible opportunity. I think most female footballers around – if given the opportunity to sign for United – would bite your hand off.” England left-back and new United captain Greenwood could not wait to get started, but behind the excitement was also a fierce determination. “To lead Manchester United into what could be greatness is an honour,” she said. “Now I want
– ALEX GREENWOOD to lead this team and do it the right way. I’ll be an honest captain – I’ll give honest feedback – but also expect it back. “There are many goals but, for the team, ultimately, it’s to get to WSL1,” Greenwood added. “First and foremost, that is the goal and we’ll take it from there. It’s going to be exciting. The girls are buzzing. It’s such a fantastic thing to be a part of. We’re creating history as we’re speaking. To be a part of that is exciting and the future is just so bright for me and the team.” This will be a season of many firsts, with today’s meeting with Reading being high on that list: a first ever competitive home fixture for Manchester United Women. Let’s hope that come 2pm this afternoon, we’re all celebrating a first home victory.

“My dad called me up in Italy... ‘Katie, it’s happening!’” Five years on from leaving United’s Centre of Excellence, Oldham-born Katie Zelem is back – and the 22-year-old midfielder couldn’t be more excited.... Having graduated through United’s Centre of Excellence, how happy are you to have come back to the club? When I left at 17, it was talked about having a women’s team. As years went on, I thought the chances were becoming increasingly unlikely but, now I’m back, it feels amazing. The attack-minded midfielder spent last season in Turin after four years with Liverpool

as people over here. He was like, “Katie, it’s happening! They’ve pulled everything together and they’re going to be competing this year.” As soon as you heard that, was it in your mind that you’d love to be a part of it? Yes, it was, I cannot lie. It was always a dream to come back. It’s an amazing club, even when I was so young back then, so to know they were becoming an established team, it was always in the back of my mind. You won the league in your only season with Juventus, which must have been some experience... It’s an incredible club and it was an incredible experience all round. There are similarities and differences – there are probably things I learned over there that I could never learn over here, so for me to go there for a year made me a better player and person.
How does it feel then to be part of creating history with United? Someone said to me, “you only move to new teams!” [Juventus was formed in July 2017] so it’s the second time in effect that I’m creating history! But to do it in my home town at a club where I first began is amazing. You’re dropping down to the second tier before hopefully the club gets promoted – was that a factor in your decision too? I did consider it, yes. Obviously, it would be more ideal for me to be playing in the top division, like I was at Liverpool, but as long as I continue to develop, and with the environment we have here and Casey as manager, it’s everyone’s aim to be promoted this season.
Do you think playing in this division will affect your chances of playing for your country? No, I hope not. An adaptable defender who can play at full-back or centrally, Amy Turner looks to set the tempo both on and off the ball. Previously with Doncaster Rovers Belles, Leeds United, Sheffield, Notts County and Liverpool, she won her first England call-up in 2015 (coincidentally due to a Casey Stoney injury). Sheffield-born Amy struggled with injury in 2017/18, but her new boss believes she can be a key influence from the back this term.

Only Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal finished above the Royals in the top flight last term
Kelly Chambers
An institution at the club, Chambers is first-team boss and director of football, and was a player for the Royals until 2012. Now in her second spell as manager, she has “devoted her life to get women’s football at the highest level at Reading”, according to ex-general manager Jon Horton.
R emi Allen
Winner of a hat-trick of accolades at the club’s end-of-season awards, Allen, 27, started every game last term, scoring nine times. Her bicycle strike against Manchester City – nominated for women’s goal of the season – put the icing on a campaign that highlighted her importance.
eading FC Women formed in 2006, springing from a renowned local girls’ centre of excellence that had already produced a number of notable talents. The Royals have progressed steadily since then, and gained entry into WSL2 for 2014, finishing a creditable third in their inaugural campaign. The following term, Reading went a couple of steps better by winning WSL2, scoring the most goals in the division and losing just once. They head into 2018/19 on the back of their best top-flight finish yet (fourth), and hoping to challenge the might of Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal. A point against Birmingham on the final day of last term secured that position, and top scorer Brooke Chaplen believes they can go further this year. “It shows the direction we are heading in,” said Chaplen, 29. “It’s difficult to compete with Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City, but we’ve done a really good job to take points off all three this year. Hopefully next year we can compete even higher up the table.” There’s reason to believe that the progression the midfielder speaks of is within their grasp. Chaplen and Player of the Year Remi Allen were two of several players to commit their futures to the Royals this summer, and the club have added new faces too. Winger Gemma Davison arrived from Chelsea, and Scottish international defender Sophie Howard joined from Hoffenheim. Striker Millie Farrow, leftback Maz Pacheco and keeper Rachael Laws – who has been part of the England set-up – are also impressive acquisitions. “If we get our tactics right, we can beat anyone” insisted Fara Williams last weekend, after the midfielder bagged a hat-trick in their convincing 4-1 beating of Durham.
