1421–22 CATHEDRAL TIMELINE
The parish church becomes a Collegiate Foundation, granted a charter by Henry V and dedicated to St Mary, St Denys and St George.
3
Introduction Manchester 1421
Henry V, King of England, signs the charter granting permission to build a collegiate church on the site of the parish church of St Mary’s. The church was established with a warden, eight fellows, four singing clerks and eight choristers. The living quarters were on the site where Chetham’s Library now stands. The church was dedicated to St Mary, St George and St Denys.
Manchester 1847
Queen Victoria is on the throne and the town is dominating the global cotton trade. There is a huge growth in population as people are drawn to the new factories and textile industries. A new Church of England Diocese of Manchester is formed and the collegiate church is raised to cathedral status.
Manchester 2014
This Grade I listed masterpiece has weathered more than 500 winters and two World Wars; survived King Henry VIII’s Reformation and an Elizabethan spy; heard one of the first public speeches to decry the world slave trade and lived the Industrial Revolution first hand. In times of war and in peace Christmas has been celebrated in this medieval corner; from its earliest days as a parish church in a provincial town through to its place as a cathedral in the heart of a 21st century metropolis.
All Welcome
Walk in, the doors are wide open. You will find international art and local schoolchildren, contemporary music and 15th century carvings, a minstrel gallery in the roof and some of the best choristers in the land. Musicians, artists, writers and poets continue to find expression in this sacred space. The winter line-up in the Cathedral Quarter includes a Secret Orchestra performing Handel’s Messiah and an award-winning brass band. We played host to world famous writers for the Manchester Literature Festival in October and will be sleeping outside for the homeless in November. Find a wine to your taste at the Hanging Ditch Wine Fair or your festive spirit at one of the many carol concerts in December. Above all we are open to you every day for services, to enjoy our stunning 15th century Quire or even if you want to pop in and light a candle. There is no admission charge and our wonderful team of volunteers and Friends of the Cathedral will give you the warmest of welcomes. This is an invitation to join us. Come in out of the cold. Celebrate Christmas with us. This is Manchester’s Cathedral.
