EXCITING CITY DEVELOPMENTS

Exciting city developments Manchester is a city that is constantly evolving with new developments happening year-round. These include new hotels, venues, restaurants, attractions and much more. Over the years, Manchester has seen the development of a number of new areas such as Spinningfields which is now home to a vast array of businesses. In 2015 some exciting changes are taking place at opposite ends of the city. In the north of the city is NOMA, Manchester’s newest neighbourhood which has and will continue to see the regeneration of the 20 acre urban land owned by The Co-operative Group and Hermes Real Estate to create a unique, sustainable community in the area featuring offices, homes, hotels, shops and leisure amenities. The first phase of its development is now complete including a new icon on the Manchester skyline, 1 Angel Square. Work will begin in late 2015 on Angel Gardens which will boast 455 apartments and includes a 36 storey tower. As part of this skyline changing development there will also be new bars,

restaurants and retail space open for all. This development underlines NOMA’s ambition to create a quality location and to become a true community where people come to live, work and play. NOMA is also committed to creating great outdoor spaces for all to enjoy. NOMA sits beside Manchester’s main regional train station Victoria, which is currently undergoing a £44 million transformation. This will include a £16 million contemporary structured roof, significant improvements to the station concourse, a modern retail space and refurbishment of the original ticket hall and modern glazed entrances. The work is scheduled to be completed in 2019 and will allow hundreds more trains to run each day, catering for millions more passengers a year. A few minutes walk from NOMA is one of Manchester’s oldest buildings Chetham’s Library in the grounds of Chetham’s School of Music. This is a unique and atmospheric venue ideal for every event from meetings and private dinners to drinks receptions and concerts. Also in the area across Cathedral Gardens is the National Football Museum based in the visually impressive Urbis building. You don’t have to be a football fan to appreciate the facilities on offer, state-of-the-art galleries and flexible meeting spaces including the Hall of Fame suite which can hold up to 250 delegates both theatre style and for banqueting. As an added extra, delegates can have exclusive use of the Football Plus+ interactives, so they could have a go at a penalty shoot-out or even try their hand at match commentating. In the south of the city is First Street, set to become Manchester’s new vibrant neighbourhood, with a compelling blend of culture, leisure, retail and office space. Manchester Science Festival

Manchester’s key sector strengths Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and the first programmable computer Manchester is truly a city of firsts. This unique history created the depth and diversity we know today, as Manchester remains an industrial and business powerhouse with particular strengths in sectors such as life sciences, advanced manufacturing and creative and digital. These sectors and businesses are vital to our conference and meetings industry, helping to generate £823 million economic impact, and showcasing Manchester’s strengths to over one million delegates every year. Manchester has recently been designated ‘European City of Science’. This title exemplifies the city’s position and aspiration within science and the sectors it has particular strengths in. During this year a celebration of our scientific heritage and culture will embrace the city, showing the world why science has historically and will continue to be, so important to this city and to all our futures.

We implore you to get involved, bring your event into Manchester and be part of the programme, which will engage everyone: from young and old, to novices and Nobel Prize winners. Science will be celebrated on our streets, in our schools, in our labs and libraries, in our business parks and in our arts and cultural venues; science on the telly, science on the tram and at our science festivals... all inspiring the next generation of scientists, entrepreneurs and events experts. ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

National Graphene Institute

Advanced manufacturing As the world’s first modern city, and the birthplace of the industrial revolution, Manchester has a strong manufacturing legacy. Today, the focus has shifted from the cotton industry towards the field of advance manufacturing, where innovative technology is used to enhance the manufacturing process. At the heart of this sector are advanced materials, a key element to drive innovation, supported by a number of research and collaboration initiatives.

10

visitmanchester.com/conference

The advanced manufacturing sector in Manchester is booming, with many world-class companies choosing to base their research, design, development and manufacturing here. The likes of Procter & Gamble, Kellogg’s, Siemens, Hitachi, Thales and NXP all call Manchester home, with many based in Trafford Park, the largest industrial park in Western Europe. Supply chains are vital to manufacturers and Manchester’s central location, set within a national and international transportation hub, puts the city closer to customers, suppliers and new opportunities. Global export markets are in easy reach too thanks to Manchester Airport, connected to over 200 destinations worldwide.

to grow its world-leading research based in advanced materials science, which is fundemental to all industrial sectors and the national economy.

One such example of the benefits of this collaboration is in the advancement of graphene, the 2-D ‘wonder material’ that is set to revolutionise a huge number of diverse applications from electronics to composites and flexible touchscreens. In 2004 The University of Manchester was the birthplace of graphene, leading to its discoverers being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Manchester’s prowess in the field of advanced materials was a major contributor to the 14th International Symposium on Metal-Hydrogen Systems, MH2014, which came to Greater Manchester for the first time in its history in July 2014. The event brought 450 of the world's leading academics and young researchers to the region and saw approximately £1 million of expenditure brought to the local economy.

To support the continued development of the material £61 million is being invested into the National Graphene Institute, opening spring 2015, with a further £60 million going into the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre. Manchester will also be the new home of The Sir Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials Research (IAMR). The new institute supported by industrial partners, will have its £235 million research centre sited at The University of Manchester and will allow the UK

In June 2015, The University of Manchester will host Graphene Week, a key international conference for scientists studying the substance. World leading companies are expected to attend the four-day conference, bringing an estimated £1 million to the local economy.
