MANCHESTER The home of great conferences and events

First words Welcome to the latest edition of the Manchester Conference & Exhibition Guide 2014/15 – the comprehensive guide to business tourism across Greater Manchester. Manchester is one of the UK’s most dynamic cities. Once an industrial heartland, the city is well known for its reinvention as a contemporary metropolis – a combination of historical importance, award winning architecture and rich culture that makes it a popular destination of choice for event planners. I am particularly thrilled to showcase the work of local artist Liam Spencer on our front cover. The piece ‘Salford Quays Twilight’, featuring IWM North, is a beautiful representation of modern day Manchester. You can find out more about this piece on page four of the guide. The ‘Team Manchester’ approach to events and conferences – which unites our venues, hotels, Universities and service providers – is truly unique and helps Manchester to lay the

foundations for truly great events. It’s an approach built on relationships, sharing and transparency and it means that event planners can be certain that by choosing Manchester they will get the very best in service. On the following pages you will find all the information you could possibly need to organise your event here. To compliment this, the guide also includes some special features on the distinctive districts that serve the conference and events industry in Manchester – areas like NOMA and MediaCityUK. You will also find details of the free services that Visit Manchester offers event planners – from finding the perfect venue and securing accommodation for delegates, to help with suggestions and contacts within the ‘Team Manchester’ partnership. Either way, we look forward to welcoming you to Manchester soon. Andrew Stokes, chief executive, Marketing Manchester

Cover art The artist Liam Spencer Liam Spencer was born in Burnley in 1964, and studied Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University, graduating in 1986. Known for his vivid portrayals of urban landscapes, particularly of Manchester, he came to prominence with a solo exhibition at The Lowry when it opened in 2000. Since then he has exhibited widely, most notably with his retrospective show at Manchester Art Gallery in 2006, and his paintings are highly sought after. In 2005, the BBC focused on his works in a 30 minute documentary. In 2008 Liam was asked to produce the artwork for the UEFA cup final at the City of Manchester stadium. The paintings and drawings were used to produce the cup final identity and were reproduced on the programme, tickets, city centre banners and stadium dressing. He exhibits regularly in the North West and beyond, and his work can be seen in several public collections, including Manchester Art Gallery, Salford Museum and Art Gallery, Touchstones Rochdale and Towneley Hall Museum and Art Gallery in Burnley. His paintings are available to purchase from Clark Art Ltd in Hale. For further information please visit liamspencer.co.uk

The art - Salford Quays Twilight, 2012 “I first painted The Quays as a student in the mid 1980’s when it was a derelict and abandoned dock. I rediscovered it as a subject around 2000 when I exhibited at The Lowry – then a brand new arts centre. Since that date The Quays have undergone continuous change and development culminating in the arrival of MediaCityUK. I have been back to The Quays many times to witness and document this changing vista, usually painting in a panoramic format which seems to suit the long horizons of The Quays. I’ve produced paintings there at all times of the day, but there’s something special about twilight when the sun begins to set, the sky turns a vivid blue and the lights begin to twinkle - all reflected in the water of The Quays.”

Manchester Metropolitan University Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) offers excellent facilities for events in Manchester city centre. In 2012 the new Business School opened with airy and stylish spaces housed under a stunning glass atrium. Designed to be at the forefront of green developments, the building has impressive environmental credentials and contributed to MMU being named the UK’s greenest university. In 2013 the Manchester School of Art fused together the traditional and modern aspects of MMU with the opening of the Benzie building, which offers a range of flexible spaces including the large open space on the fourth floor that can accommodate up to 200 delegates with fully integrated AV facilities and opens up onto a unique city centre roof terrace with stunning views over the campus and city centre.
