It is one of the most exciting cities in the UK, with its energy expressed through its magnificent architecture, fascinating things to see and do and, most of all, the spirit of its people. Manchester has earned a reputation for being revolutionary, innovative and entrepreneurial. The city was the birthplace of the industrial revolution, leading the development of the modern world. Stroll the streets and you’ll see the mixture of old and new architecture sat side by side. Manchester is a unique city that offers a warm welcome to visitors from around the world. The city has an international reputation which is reflected in the diversity of its regular cultural events and festivals which include Manchester Pride, Chinese New Year, Manchester Irish Festival and the biennial Manchester International Festival. Bridgewater Canal

Group visitors to Manchester are often surprised as to how compact the city centre is, with most attractions able to be reached on foot. However, there is also plenty of coach parking bays throughout the city making it accessible for all. Furthermore, with a free city centre bus service (Metroshuttle) operating three circular route services throughout the day every 5-10 minutes, there’s no excuse not to explore what Manchester has to offer! There’s an array of things to do in and around Manchester suitable for a whole range of group visitors including educational, social, special interest and youth. Choose from over 90 awardwinning museums and galleries, many of which are free to enter. Manchester is constantly improving its attractions and facilities, be it the sports developments in areas such as New East Manchester or the re-invention of the more established quarters of the city, such as Cathedral Gardens. However, new developments such as The Trafford Quays Leisure Village, keep Manchester at the forefront of other leisure destinations offering a unique, varied and everchanging experience to group visitors just a few miles from the city centre. A City of Choice Manchester is a city of contrasts, ensuring there is something to suit everybody’s tastes and budgets. From Urban to Rural, Gardens to Galleries groups are spoilt for choice. Old and new - Manchester city centre offers a hotchpotch of architecture, mixing the exceptionally old with the strikingly new. Since 1877, the gothicrevival architecture of Manchester Town Hall has attracted visitors from far and wide. The structure is a bold, arrogant statement about Manchester, with every detail thoughtfully included to represent the city’s history. In contrast you’ll find the contemporary Beetham Tower; currently the tallest residential building in Europe. A Hilton hotel occupies the bottom 22 floors, as well as the Cloud 23 bar, where groups can go for classic afternoon tea whilst taking in the views across Greater Manchester and beyond. Out and about

Lass O’Gowrie

His and hers - Come to Manchester and experience the best in local produce, ranging from local chocolatiers to an abundance of local breweries. JW Lees has been making beer in Manchester since 1828 and is one of the few remaining independent family brewers in the UK. Its core brands are Bitter, Real Ale, Golden Original and Moonraker, each offering distinctive tastes and textures. For those with a sweet tooth, head to Bury and visit Slattery’s; the family-run awardwinning patisserie, complete with coffee shop. Groups can watch the team, who have almost 200 years’ combined expertise, or can even participate themselves. Learn many different skills from a number of courses on offer including the art of chocolate work, sugar modelling, cooking and many more. Shopping for everyone - When it comes to shopping, Manchester is hard to beat, so it should come as no surprise that high-end purchases are just around the corner from vintage chic. Classical rock - Over the years, every genre of music has drawn a crowd to Manchester, from classic performances of the Hallé Orchestra to Joy Division’s punk era; from an 80s ‘Madchester’ scene to mid-90s Britpop Oasis. Today, the city continues to build on this legacy with some world-class venues that play host to all kinds of musical styles. Hallé Orchestra

Mountain biking

Spectator to player - Manchester has everything for sports fans and thrill seekers. Whilst it is great to watch the many sporting teams and events happening in the city, there are also a lot of sports activities that your group can get actively involved in. So whether it’s football or cricket, skiing or cycling - come to Manchester to spectate or participate and always enjoy!! From city places to green, open spaces With stunning country houses and parks, tranquil lakes and wonderful heritage all just a stone’s throw away from the vibrant, bustling city centre, groups can enjoy the best of both worlds, with beautiful countryside on the city’s doorstep.

Canal Street

Manchester’s Heritage & History Once known as ‘Cottonopolis’ producing 80% of the world’s cotton and being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

During the 19th Century, the whole of England’s Northwest was a powerhouse for the rest of the world, contributing to advancements in engineering, manufacturing, fashion and transport. Manchester has been at the forefront of new ideas and social movements, bringing major issues to the world’s attention as well as nurturing some of the technology that transformed manufacturing and transport to shape the industrial landscape. Manchester’s former landscape was one of chimneys, mills and steam driven transport. The legacy of the warehouses and mills, canals, bridges and viaducts has left the city with a wonderfully unique character where old and new contemporary buildings now sit side by side. Groups can experience for themselves the pioneering and radical spirit of Manchester at various locations and attractions within the city. Carried Away, the opening exhibition of the newly refurbished People’s History Museum charts the history of protestors such as the Suffragettes through moving photographic displays. 4

www.visitmanchester.com/traveltrade

MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry) is another fascinating attraction which documents the reforms and revolutionary ideas which has shaped Manchester into the city it is today. The legacy of Manchester’s heritage can be found beyond the city centre along the Manchester Politics Trail which weaves between various museums and galleries across the city including MOSI. Areas such as Castlefield boast canals winding through the city centre, alongside mighty bonded warehouses that once stored goods ready for dispatch across the world. Outside of the city centre, a whole host of wonderful locations are waiting to be discovered including the Rochdale Pioneers’ Museum (for the history of the Co-operative Movement), Trencherfield Mill Engine in Wigan and Barrow Bridge Village in Bolton. It all happened in Manchester: • The Peterloo Massacre • The Co-operative Movement • Trade Unions • The Suffragettes • Rolls-Royce • Vegetarianism.

Did you know? City of firsts Manchester is a proud city of firsts; The passenger railway station, the world’s first stored computer program, the splitting of the atom, the first public lending library in the English speaking world, the first true commercial canal, the labour movement, waterproof fabric and England’s professional football league.

Manchester population In 1801, Manchester’s population was 76,788. By 1851, it had quadrupled to 316,213. The cause of this phenomenal increase was the shock era of the Industrial Revolution.

Nobel Prize winners There have been 23 Nobel Prize winners from Manchester University including… •

Ernest Rutherford (1908, for his work with atomic substances)

James Chadwick (1935, for his discovery of the Neutron)

Joseph E Stiglitz (2001, for his economic analyses of markets with asymmetric information)

Group News & Developments Manchester is a radical city that has never been afraid to experiment and push boundaries. Over the last year, Manchester has continued its seemingly endless phase of reinvention and development. Take a look at the future plans for the city and also the developments which have taken place during 2009 that will only improve and enhance the group visitor experience.

Green Badge guides

Legoland

In March 2009, Manchester’s new tour guides celebrated the successful completion of a six month training course with the Institute of Tourist Guiding. Twenty-four new guides have been added to Manchester’s tourism offer following the training they undertook between September 2008 and March 2009. The Green Badge authorises guides to carry out public walks and coach tours within the Greater Manchester area.

The Legoland Discovery Centre is a new family visitor attraction set to open at Manchester’s Trafford Centre in time for Easter 2010. Legoland Discovery Centres are a new concept offering a fun, interactive and educational experience for children aged between three and twelve years old. This attraction will present a host of Lego-themed attractions, including a 4D cinema, an immersive Lego ride, and a ‘Miniland’ featuring key landmarks from Manchester and the Northwest.

Go Ape in Bolton! A new addition to the group’s offer in Bolton is Go Ape! This High Wire Forest Adventure is a three hour course featuring zip wires, slides and connecting bridges set on the banks of Lower Rivington Reservoir. Being the only Go Ape! course with a water feature running parallel to it, it is a great day out if you are organising a corporate event, a birthday party, stag or hen night or any other group outing. Visit www.goape.co.uk for more information.

Metrolink transport reform The Metrolink tram system is benefiting from a £700 million investment programme that will almost double the size of the network and deliver a brand new fleet of trams and ticket machines. New lines are being built to connect South Manchester, East Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale, and MediaCity:UK in Salford. City centre tracks are also currently being replaced to provide improved journeys with greater comfort. Visit www.gmpte.com for more information.

The Gallery will offer better facilities for schools in a new workshop space, access for disabled visitors will be improved and additional exhibition space will enable the Whitworth to show bigger, more ambitious exhibitions.

Proposals for £24 million BMX centre announced Designed by Ellis Williams Architects, proposals for the 110,000 sq foot building will, with the existing Manchester Velodrome, form the National Cycling Centre, the home of British cycling. Museums & Galleries Since its emergence as an industrial powerhouse in the nineteenth century, Manchester has remained a bold and international home for art and culture. Manchester is known for many things: industrial revolution, football, music and shopping. So it sometimes comes as a surprise to discover that the city also has a reputation as one of the best cultural destinations in the country.

Manchester Museum family event

Manchester Museum pre-historic exhibition

The year kicks off in style with the re-opening of the People’s History Museum. After a £12.5m development, this architecturally impressive museum has doubled in size, allowing more of its collection to be on display. Visitors can discover fascinating stories and hands-on exhibits that bring thousands of objects to life - from artefacts dating back to the 1819 Peterloo Massacre to hangings from the world’s largest collection of political banners. The new museum also includes a People’s Theatre, a multi-sensory space for performance and interactive drama activities. In a year that will see a general election and all the political debate that goes with it, the People’s History Museum has never been more relevant. Another national museum with architectural clout is the Imperial War Museum North (IWMN). This awardwinning museum explores the human impact of war and conflict in a series of engaging and interactive exhibitions and displays. In 2010, the museum opens

a show by one of the world’s most acclaimed photographers - Don McCullin. In the largest British exhibition of McCullin’s work, IWMN displays over 200 photographs, contact sheets, objects and magazines that reveal a life spent documenting conflict. Opposite IWMN is The Lowry, an arts complex that’s as good for theatre and performance as it is the visual arts. The Lowry celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and its programme reflects its celebratory mood. As you’d expect, the centre displays the work of LS Lowry in the Lowry Favourites exhibition - which includes paintings, photographs, sound and film. Alongside this, visitors can see new contemporary art, photography and much more. Contemporary art is also on display at Manchester Art Gallery. The city’s most central gallery, shows a mix of historic collections and current displays spanning six centuries. Highlights include an outstanding collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings and a gallery of craft and design showcasing the best in international decorative art. Recent acquisitions include Antony Gormley’s sculpture, Filter, which is suspended at the top of three-story glass atrium.

Manchester Art Gallery

Whitworth Art Gallery

In early 2010, the Gallery brings the hyper-real sculptures of Ron Mueck to Manchester for the first time, while in April, the Gallery premieres A World Observed, the first ever retrospective of Dorothy Bohm, one of the doyennes of British photography. The Whitworth Art Gallery is another gallery that mixes outstanding historic collections with new and recent work its textile and wallpaper collections are, for example, second only to the V&A in London. This collection forms the backbone of The Walls Are Talking. In the first such show of its kind in the UK, the Gallery has gathered a disparate

MOSI steam train

range of images: bullet-ridden masonry in Beruit, an NYPD crime scene and images of chemical warfare. What unites these images? They have all been applied to that most domestic of products: wallpaper. Including loans from the V&A, private collectors and artists, this exhibition underlines what the Whitworth is best at: treading the fine line between high and popular art, and between the historic and the contemporary. Close by, you’ll find Manchester Museum. Within its 15 galleries are many natural wonders, telling the story of the past, present and future of our planet. Come face-to-face with live snakes, Egyptian mummies and pre-historic creatures or handle real objects from the collection. 2010 marks the international year of biodiversity and, to celebrate, the museum is hosting a special exhibition, Charles Darwin: Evolution of a Scientist (until August 2010) showcasing fascinating objects used and collected by Darwin and illustrated in a graphic-novel style.

IWMN

As well as being big enough to explore (MOSI has its own steam train running across its sprawling site), the museum works hard to make the past engaging. As such, it runs a series of award-winning tours led by costumed characters that range from the 18th century scientist, John Dalton to the ‘Spitfire Girls’. Finally, don’t leave Manchester without visiting the digital art and film centre, Cornerhouse. In 2010, it premieres Contemporary Art Iraq (April-June), an exhibition that includes new film, video, digital art, photography, sculpture and more. Unlike anything seen before in the UK, Cornerhouse hopes to show a different side to Iraq by revealing the culture and creativity that occurs beyond the theatre of war.

If industrial history is your thing, head to the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) to hear the story of Manchester’s industrial and scientific past - one of its star exhibits is ‘Baby’ - the world’s first computer to have a stored memory.

Within Manchester Art Gallery, ‘workshops for schools’ cover National Curriculum topics for all Key Stages and include sessions on Toys, Ancient Greece, Shakespeare and the Victorians. The Quays Then

The Lowry

The Quays - Then & Now Spanning the length of the Manchester Ship Canal and just 15 minutes by tram from Manchester City Centre, The Quays is Greater Manchester’s inspiring waterfront destination. Visitors have been attracted to The Quays since the early part of the 19th century, when the area was a country idyll and a playground and cultural haven for the wealthy Victorian elite; as the century wore on, more attractions developed and the appeal of the area spread. The Botanical Gardens at Old Trafford were the big draw in the early part of the century when they played host to the Manchester Art Treasure’s exhibition in 1857. Today you can experience art 364 days a year at The Lowry, alongside the lively programme of special exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, photography and design; you will always see the work of LS Lowry. Sport is also synonymous with the area, Lancashire County Cricket Club played their first match at Old Trafford in 1865 and in 1884 Old Trafford became the second ground after the Oval to stage Test cricket in England. Manchester United is the new boy, not arriving in Old Trafford until 1910. Earlier generations would be amazed by today’s 21st century facilities, the concerts and the hospitality. You can enjoy a full day pleasure cruise operated by Mersey Ferries between Salford Quays and Liverpool. Turn the clock back to 1894 and similar trips took place with passenger steamers running pleasure trips between Manchester Cathedral and Pomona Gardens and local beauty spot Throstles Nest, as well as regular sight-seeing tours around the docks and rarer trips to Liverpool. IWMN

There could be fewer appropriate locations for the site of Imperial War Museum North than its home on the banks of the Ship Canal. During the Second World War the area became a target for the enemy after producing the famous ‘Manchester’ and ‘Lancaster’ bomber, Rolls Royce Merlin engines for fighter planes, as well as radar equipment and other armaments. During the Manchester Blitz, the area came under attack where an estimated 684 people died and 2,364 wounded. The museum houses a number of artefacts from the time and sound clips can be heard in the AirShard.

Food and drink has always been a feature of visits to the area and there are a range of options with a choice of cafÊs, bars and restaurants at The Lowry Outlet Mall, Manchester’s only Factory Outlet offering discount prices, up to 70 per cent lower than the high street, all year round. This is just a taste of The Quays; to fully appreciate the area you will want to stay overnight. Not surprisingly, there is a wide range of accommodation for groups to choose from including the Ramada Salford Quays and Old Trafford Lodge. Visit www.thequays.org.uk for more information. Whatever you’re here for, a trip won’t be complete without a visit to either Manchester United’s Museum and Stadium Tour or the Manchester’s City Experience. Don’t miss the chance to walk in the footsteps of famous players, run through the tunnel to the roar of the crowd, sit in the director’s box and visit the players changing rooms. Various group discounts are available and tours can be tailored to suit particular needs.

The beautiful game isn’t the only sport that is followed here with passion. The successful hosting of world championship events (including the 2002 Commonwealth Games and no fewer than eight international sports events in 2008, has certainly made its mark. Sportcity is home to many award winning facilities including the City of Manchester Stadium, the National Squash Centre and the legendary Manchester Velodrome (currently the UK’s National Cycling Centre). Test the same track that the British Cycling Team use to practice - you don’t need to be an athlete to get involved, just hire a bike and a helmet for a taster. On the outskirts of Manchester city centre is the new Trafford Quays Leisure Village, where groups can experience numerous sporting highlights in one place. It’s the ideal destination all year round for groups to ski, kick, putt and skydive all within the same vicinity.

With cheap deals for students almost every night of the week, Manchester’s bars, nightclubs, and its legendary music scene all add to the excitement of the city. Intimate venues such as Band on the Wall in the Northern Quarter are great places to hear new music. Band on the Wall has been a catalyst for Manchester’s music scene, serving generations of Mancs since the early 19th Century. Following a £4 million redevelopment, this stunning venue features some of the best music performance facilities in the UK, and still attracts the world’s greatest musicians. For a truly electrifying group experience, follow your dreams and walk in the footsteps of some of the legendary performers who have played at Band on the wall including Joy Division, Buzzcocks, The Fall, and Simply Red. Groups of six to thirty can build their own band, learn to sing, play a variety of instruments, perform on the famous stage and even make a record! For more information, email najia@bandonthewall.org Most of Manchester’s iconic bands paid their dues on the local live circuit and it’s definitely worth keeping your ear to the ground to hear new talent at the city’s many live music venues and regular live music festivals.

These free events and festivals run throughout the year and keep Manchester city centre buzzing: The Two Cities Boat Race (May) is an annual regatta held at Salford Quays and is one of the biggest student sport events of the year, between Salford and Manchester University. Eurocultured festival (May) brings together the very best of European bands, DJs and graffiti artists. Live performances, plenty of stalls and on-site art turn this event into a colourful celebration of new and established talent from all over Europe. Manchester Pride’s Big Weekend (August) is a fantastic four-day party with community spaces, street entertainers, market stalls and amazing performances from great artists and DJs. Taking place over the bank holiday weekend, the colourful Pride parade is not to be missed! In The City festival (October) is one for future music moguls. Over the past 15 years the festival has hosted now-legendary gigs by The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Arctic Monkeys and many more. Manchester’s Theatres

Manchester’s pioneering spirit isn’t limited to science and industry. Celebrate the city’s theatrical heritage by taking your group to a show at one of Manchester’s many theatres. The flame of innovation and independence that made Manchester famous is today carried forward by its many nationally and internationallyfamous theatres. Venues that are steeped in history continue to push forwards, while brilliant modern auditoria carry a tradition that started right here; Manchester was the first city in the UK to have a repertory theatre (and it is still home to the largest theatre concentration outside London). Today the theatres cater for groups of all ages and tastes, amid an array of settings; from ornate Victorian gems to fantastical space age auditoria. For a unique theatre layout head to The Royal Exchange Theatre housed in Manchester’s historical Cotton Exchange building; a must-see on your visit to the city. Housing The Round restaurant, Bar Exchange and two gallery spaces, there is plenty to do… and that’s before you have decided which production to see from the sensational and varied programme on offer.

The Palace Theatre, often referred to as ‘The Grand Old Lady of Oxford Street’ is now one of the best equipped and most popular theatres in the country, hosting many major touring musicals, often with major celebrities. The regional premiere of Les Miserables ran there for 13 months from 1992-1993 and is due to return soon. The Palace’s sister theatre is the Opera House on Peter Street, which plays host to touring musicals, ballet, concerts and popular Christmas pantomimes. 2010 will see Hairspray: The Musical brought to the Opera House along with romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally and family favourite George’s Marvellous Medicine. Timeless classics and modern drama can be found in the Library Theatre, housed in the basement of the beautiful, circular Central Library. Included in the 2010 itinerary is local comedy Beautiful House by Cathy Crabb (23 April - 8 May) and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of being Earnest (4 June - 4 July).

Getting around

Choose accommodation with green credentials. Many hotels and serviced apartments in Manchester are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS), the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK. GTBS accredits businesses on their efforts to reduce their environmental impact against a range of rigorous criteria including energy efficiency and waste management. For a full list, check-out: www.visitmanchester.com/green

Manchester is the perfect base for groups to combine a city break with a few days in the surrounding towns and countryside. Travel on Manchester’s efficient public transport system to take you further afield helping reduce your carbon footprint.

People are often surprised at how compact Manchester is, therefore the best way of discovering the city is by foot. Walking allows you the freedom to explore at your own pace, as well as being environmentally friendly. Alternatively, take the free Metroshuttle bus and hop on and off at attractions across the city as you wish.

Manchester hotels who are members of the GTBS include the Palace Hotel, Radisson Edwardian and the Lowry Hotel. Alternatively, serviced apartments offer a flexible and cost effective alternative for large groups; Atrium by Bridgestreet and Staying Cool are both involved in GTBS. Whilst you’re there, remember to do your bit by adhering to towel policies in hotels and using water wisely. Conserve energy by switching off lights that aren’t required. Castlefield Walking Tours

There are plenty of beautiful rural areas to discover within Manchester including Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens, Heaton Park and Tatton Park which all have environmental policies and procedures in place so you can be assured that your visit will be a sustainable one. Talented local artists create masterpieces at Manchester Craft & Design Centre. Home to 18 studio boutiques belonging to contemporary artists and craft-workers, it is one of the few places in the UK open to the public where goods are both individually produced and sold on the premises. The centre boasts jewellery, textiles, ceramics, art work and furniture so you’re sure to find a unique gift.

Journeying further afield? Groups can rest assured that coach travel is actually one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel, causing less pollution per passenger than the equivalent journey made by the same sized group of car passengers. Throughout the region there is ample coach parking next to many of the fantastic museums and galleries. Alternatively, consider the extensive network of trams, trains and buses. The world famous market is also the home of the original black pudding - the best in the country! A short walk away from the market is the East Lancashire Steam railway. This beautifully restored heritage railway follows a 12-mile route, taking passengers along the scenic Irwell valley from Bury to Rawtenstall and to Heywood. There is also a chance to stop off at Ramsbottom to explore specialist shops and cafes. The trains run at weekends thoughout the year and mid-week from May to September. North of Manchester you’ll find the traditional mill town of Oldham, a culturally diverse landscape that is rich in industrial heritage. Nearby, Gallery Oldham, is a contemporary arts venue with fascinating collections and dynamic exhibitions from local, national and international artists.

Hat Works

Manchester’s famous co-operative movement began in 1844, when a group of weavers formed the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers. The store they opened is preserved today as the Rochdale Pioneers Museum and explains the ideals and principles of the cooperative movement. Meanwhile, Rochdale’s ‘hidden gem’; The Baum Pub, is situated next door to the Museum. It was voted CAMRA Pub of the Year 2009 and serves a wealth of refreshments, real ales and home-cooked food all day.

In South Manchester, Stockport will keep your group busy - visit the historical Staircase House, where you can travel through time and touch the past, as visitors are encouraged to interact with the exhibits. Take your hat off to the only museum in the UK dedicated to millinery, the unique and engaging Hat Works Museum, which offers guided tours that really brings the subject to life. It is a must for history enthusiasts and guided tours include a special High Tea tour, served in the Victorian kitchen.

Manchester’s oldest and closest neighbour is Salford; a city in its own right, contrasting picturesque villages such as Worsley (birthplace of the Bridgewater Canal) with ultra-modern attractions like the Lowry and The Lowry Outlet Mall, over at The Quays (Greater Manchester’s waterfront destination). You’ll never be stuck for things to do; you could try a guided walk on one of many heritage trails or explore Salford’s countryside at Clifton and Blackleach Country Parks. Why not visit the recreated Victorian Street, Lark Hill Place or enjoy a leisurely boat cruise on the Bridgewater Canal?

Situated just seven miles east of Manchester city centre, groups are only minutes away from Tameside via the frequent bus or train services. Shopping is plentiful in Tameside with Crown Point North in Denton and The Arcades Shopping Centre in Ashton under Lyne, home to the famous Ashton Market with over 140 stalls. With nine seperate towns, Tameside is the perfect blend of urban and countryside living, ideal for a group day out or short break. Blackpool & Lancashire

Chester & Cheshire

A warm welcome awaits you in colourful Lancashire, a county steeped in history and rural traditions but also bursting with contemporary culture. With its spectacular scenery and breathtaking coastlines, including world-famous Blackpool, Lancashire boasts some of the most beautiful countryside in the country. From the undulating hillside of Lancaster and the Lune Valley, loved by William Wordsworth for its panoramic views, to the razzmatazz of Blackpool, the UK’s most popular seaside resort, Lancashire is a wonderful county of contrasts. From coast to countryside, city to village, farm shop to Michelin star restaurant - there is everything you need for a day out or a longer stay.

Chester is a delightful mix of exclusive stores, excellent dining and vibrant nightlife - but you can never forget that this modern, exciting city has been shaped by 2,000 years of history.

Whatever the season, Cheshire’s delightful countryside is the ideal refuge from the pressures of city life. Walk, cycle or ride through secluded landscapes; or simply visit one of the picturesque market towns.

Completely encircled by city walls, Chester’s most unique feature is the 13th century ‘Rows’ - two tiers of enticing shops, running through the main streets. Destinations for history hunters include the beautiful Norman Cathedral and Britain’s largest Roman Amphitheatre, built to entertain 7,000 spectators. A walk around the city walls will take you past the enchanting Eastgate Clock, the River Dee and the oldest racecourse in Britain.

Historic houses, stately homes and awardwinning gardens are all within easy reach of each other. In fact, Cheshire has more gardens open to the public, per head of population, than anywhere else in the UK.

For more information go to www.visitlancashire.com Lancashire

If city style is not your thing, then delve in to rural Cheshire. Thaw to the winter day crackle of log fires in cosy country pubs or warm to the glow of summer sunsets viewed from magical, wooded hillsides.

Picturesque, worldly, packed full of history and well stocked with excellent restaurants, indulgent shops and fantastic golf courses; Chester and Cheshire are well connected with the rest of the country. But when you need to disappear off the radar for a while, it is full of wonderful hiding places. Scratch the surface and discover the real beauty of Chester and Cheshire.
