Manchester’s Heritage & History Once known as ‘Cottonopolis’ producing 80% of the world’s cotton and being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
During the 19th Century, the whole of England’s Northwest was a powerhouse for the rest of the world, contributing to advancements in engineering, manufacturing, fashion and transport. Manchester has been at the forefront of new ideas and social movements, bringing major issues to the world’s attention as well as nurturing some of the technology that transformed manufacturing and transport to shape the industrial landscape. Manchester’s former landscape was one of chimneys, mills and steam driven transport. The legacy of the warehouses and mills, canals, bridges and viaducts has left the city with a wonderfully unique character where old and new contemporary buildings now sit side by side. Groups can experience for themselves the pioneering and radical spirit of Manchester at various locations and attractions within the city. Carried Away, the opening exhibition of the newly refurbished People’s History Museum charts the history of protestors such as the Suffragettes through moving photographic displays. 4

MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry) is another fascinating attraction which documents the reforms and revolutionary ideas which has shaped Manchester into the city it is today. The legacy of Manchester’s heritage can be found beyond the city centre along the Manchester Politics Trail which weaves between various museums and galleries across the city including MOSI. Areas such as Castlefield boast canals winding through the city centre, alongside mighty bonded warehouses that once stored goods ready for dispatch across the world. Green Badge guides
Legoland
In March 2009, Manchester’s new tour guides celebrated the successful completion of a six month training course with the Institute of Tourist Guiding. Twenty-four new guides have been added to Manchester’s tourism offer following the training they undertook between September 2008 and March 2009. The Green Badge authorises guides to carry out public walks and coach tours within the Greater Manchester area.
The Legoland Discovery Centre is a new family visitor attraction set to open at Manchester’s Trafford Centre in time for Easter 2010. Legoland Discovery Centres are a new concept offering a fun, interactive and educational experience for children aged between three and twelve years old. This attraction will present a host of Lego-themed attractions, including a 4D cinema, an immersive Lego ride, and a ‘Miniland’ featuring key landmarks from Manchester and the Northwest.
Go Ape in Bolton! A new addition to the group’s offer in Bolton is Go Ape! This High Wire Forest Adventure is a three hour course featuring zip wires, slides and connecting bridges set on the banks of Lower Rivington Reservoir. Being the only Go Ape! course with a water feature running parallel to it, it is a great day out if you are organising a corporate event, a birthday party, stag or hen night or any other group outing. Whitworth Art Gallery expansion 2013
Metrolink transport reform The Metrolink tram system is benefiting from a £700 million investment programme that will almost double the size of the network and deliver a brand new fleet of trams and ticket machines. New lines are being built to connect South Manchester, East Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale, and MediaCity:UK in Salford. City centre tracks are also currently being replaced to provide improved journeys with greater comfort. Visit www.gmpte.com for more information.
Development funding of £152,000 from The Heritage Lottery Fund has been awarded to The Whitworth Art Gallery to help progress plans which include building a new park-facing entrance, a Centre for Landscape Study, a new shop and a café. The Gallery will offer better facilities for schools in a new workshop space, access for disabled visitors will be improved and additional exhibition space will enable the Whitworth to show bigger, more ambitious exhibitions.
Proposals for £24 million BMX centre announced Designed by Ellis Williams Architects, proposals for the 110,000 sq foot building will, with the existing Manchester Velodrome, form the National Cycling Centre, the home of British cycling. It will include a 2,000 seat capacity BMX area and offices for the headquarters of the British Cycling Federation. Subject to funding and planning approval, work will start on site by January 2010 with completion by March 2011.

Manchester is known for many things: industrial revolution, football, music and shopping. So it sometimes comes as a surprise to discover that the city also has a reputation as one of the best cultural destinations in the country.

The year kicks off in style with the re-opening of the People’s History Museum. After a £12.5m development, this architecturally impressive museum has doubled in size, allowing more of its collection to be on display. Visitors can discover fascinating stories and hands-on exhibits that bring thousands of objects to life - from artefacts dating back to the 1819 Peterloo Massacre to hangings from the world’s largest collection of political banners. The new museum also includes a People’s Theatre, a multi-sensory space for performance and interactive drama activities. In a year that will see a general election and all the political debate that goes with it, the People’s History Museum has never been more relevant. Another national museum with architectural clout is the Imperial War Museum North (IWMN). This awardwinning museum explores the human impact of war and conflict in a series of engaging and interactive exhibitions and displays. In 2010, the museum opens

a show by one of the world’s most acclaimed photographers - Don McCullin. In the largest British exhibition of McCullin’s work, IWMN displays over 200 photographs, contact sheets, objects and magazines that reveal a life spent documenting conflict. Opposite IWMN is The Lowry, an arts complex that’s as good for theatre and performance as it is the visual arts. The Lowry celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and its programme reflects its celebratory mood. As you’d expect, the centre displays the work of LS Lowry in the Lowry Favourites exhibition - which includes paintings, photographs, sound and film. Alongside this, visitors can see new contemporary art, photography and much more. Contemporary art is also on display at Manchester Art Gallery. The city’s most central gallery, shows a mix of historic collections and current displays spanning six centuries. Highlights include an outstanding collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings and a gallery of craft and design showcasing the best in international decorative art. Recent acquisitions include Antony Gormley’s sculpture, Filter, which is suspended at the top of three-story glass atrium.

In early 2010, the Gallery brings the hyper-real sculptures of Ron Mueck to Manchester for the first time, while in April, the Gallery premieres A World Observed, the first ever retrospective of Dorothy Bohm, one of the doyennes of British photography. The Whitworth Art Gallery is another gallery that mixes outstanding historic collections with new and recent work its textile and wallpaper collections are, for example, second only to the V&A in London. This collection forms the backbone of The Walls Are Talking. In the first such show of its kind in the UK, the Gallery has gathered a disparate

range of images: bullet-ridden masonry in Beruit, an NYPD crime scene and images of chemical warfare. What unites these images? They have all been applied to that most domestic of products: wallpaper. Including loans from the V&A, private collectors and artists, this exhibition underlines what the Whitworth is best at: treading the fine line between high and popular art, and between the historic and the contemporary. Close by, you’ll find Manchester Museum. Within its 15 galleries are many natural wonders, telling the story of the past, present and future of our planet. Come face-to-face with live snakes, Egyptian mummies and pre-historic creatures or handle real objects from the collection. 2010 marks the international year of biodiversity and, to celebrate, the museum is hosting a special exhibition, Charles Darwin: Evolution of a Scientist (until August 2010) showcasing fascinating objects used and collected by Darwin and illustrated in a graphic-novel style.
IWMN
As well as being big enough to explore (MOSI has its own steam train running across its sprawling site), the museum works hard to make the past engaging. As such, it runs a series of award-winning tours led by costumed characters that range from the 18th century scientist, John Dalton to the ‘Spitfire Girls’. Finally, don’t leave Manchester without visiting the digital art and film centre, Cornerhouse. In 2010, it premieres Contemporary Art Iraq (April-June), an exhibition that includes new film, video, digital art, photography, sculpture and more. Unlike anything seen before in the UK, Cornerhouse hopes to show a different side to Iraq by revealing the culture and creativity that occurs beyond the theatre of war.
If industrial history is your thing, head to the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) to hear the story of Manchester’s industrial and scientific past - one of its star exhibits is ‘Baby’ - the world’s first computer to have a stored memory.

John Rylands Library has more than 4 million printed books and manuscripts, over 41,000 electronic journals and 500,000 electronic books, along with several hundred databases. The John Rylands Library, Deansgate, houses some of the most significant books and manuscripts ever produced. The magnificent neo-gothic building in Manchester’s city centre is a major visitor attraction as well as a research library of world renown. It includes the St John Fragment, the earliest known piece of the New Testament in existence. The exhibition galleries tell the story of the Library and its collections. People’s History Museum
Whether you are a primary, secondary or further education teacher, The Lowry has a programme to suit your needs. School visits to The Lowry can support and inspire learning in both visual and performing arts and through their education programmes, pupils can explore their own responses to the exhibitions and theatre shows. The Lowry has programmed a range of creative workshops for you and your students. They give schools the opportunity to work with a large team of practising artists, dancers and drama practitioners to help pupils access the LS Lowry collection and some of their visiting shows. All the workshops support the art and design national curriculum, as well as physical education, English and drama. In addition to the workshops, they offer resources for teachers, training and a public space for your pupils to perform. Within Manchester Art Gallery, ‘workshops for schools’ cover National Curriculum topics for all Key Stages and include sessions on Toys, Ancient Greece, Shakespeare and the Victorians. The Quays - Then & Now Spanning the length of the Manchester Ship Canal and just 15 minutes by tram from Manchester City Centre, The Quays is Greater Manchester’s inspiring waterfront destination. Visitors have been attracted to The Quays since the early part of the 19th century, when the area was a country idyll and a playground and cultural haven for the wealthy Victorian elite; as the century wore on, more attractions developed and the appeal of the area spread. The Botanical Gardens at Old Trafford were the big draw in the early part of the century when they played host to the Manchester Art Treasure’s exhibition in 1857. Today you can experience art 364 days a year at The Lowry, alongside the lively programme of special exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, photography and design; you will always see the work of LS Lowry. Sport is also synonymous with the area, Lancashire County Cricket Club played their first match at Old Trafford in 1865 and in 1884 Old Trafford became the second ground after the Oval to stage Test cricket in England. Manchester United is the new boy, not arriving in Old Trafford until 1910. Earlier generations would be amazed by today’s 21st century facilities, the concerts and the hospitality. You can enjoy a full day pleasure cruise operated by Mersey Ferries between Salford Quays and Liverpool. Turn the clock back to 1894 and similar trips took place with passenger steamers running pleasure trips between Manchester Cathedral and Pomona Gardens and local beauty spot Throstles Nest, as well as regular sight-seeing tours around the docks and rarer trips to Liverpool. There could be fewer appropriate locations for the site of Imperial War Museum North than its home on the banks of the Ship Canal. During the Second World War the area became a target for the enemy after producing the famous ‘Manchester’ and ‘Lancaster’ bomber, Rolls Royce Merlin engines for fighter planes, as well as radar equipment and other armaments. During the Manchester Blitz, the area came under attack where an estimated 684 people died and 2,364 wounded. The museum houses a number of artefacts from the time and sound clips can be heard in the AirShard.

Urban Moves (23 - 25 July) is a three-day festival featuring live professional dance performance outdoors. In the neighbouring town of Bury, bag a bargain at the award-winning Bury Market. The world famous market is also the home of the original black pudding - the best in the country! A short walk away from the market is the East Lancashire Steam railway. This beautifully restored heritage railway follows a 12-mile route, taking passengers along the scenic Irwell valley from Bury to Rawtenstall and to Heywood. Manchester’s famous co-operative movement began in 1844, when a group of weavers formed the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers. The store they opened is preserved today as the Rochdale Pioneers Museum and explains the ideals and principles of the cooperative movement. Meanwhile, Rochdale’s ‘hidden gem’; The Baum Pub, is situated next door to the Museum. It was voted CAMRA Pub of the Year 2009 and serves a wealth of refreshments, real ales and home-cooked food all day.
In South Manchester, Stockport will keep your group busy - visit the historical Staircase House, where you can travel through time and touch the past, as visitors are encouraged to interact with the exhibits. Take your hat off to the only museum in the UK dedicated to millinery, the unique and engaging Hat Works Museum, which offers guided tours that really brings the subject to life. It is a must for history enthusiasts and guided tours include a special High Tea tour, served in the Victorian kitchen.
Manchester’s oldest and closest neighbour is Salford; a city in its own right, contrasting picturesque villages such as Worsley (birthplace of the Bridgewater Canal) with ultra-modern attractions like the Lowry and The Lowry Outlet Mall, over at The Quays (Greater Manchester’s waterfront destination). You’ll never be stuck for things to do; you could try a guided walk on one of many heritage trails or explore Salford’s countryside at Clifton and Blackleach Country Parks. Situated just seven miles east of Manchester city centre, groups are only minutes away from Tameside via the frequent bus or train services. Shopping is plentiful in Tameside with Crown Point North in Denton and The Arcades Shopping Centre in Ashton under Lyne, home to the famous Ashton Market with over 140 stalls. With nine seperate towns, Tameside is the perfect blend of urban and countryside living, ideal for a group day out or short break. As well as the valleys of the Rivers Tame, Medlock and Etherow, Tameside has three country parks, eight local nature reserves and a fine canal network making it a great choice for nature lovers.

Trafford has a diverse range of things to see and do. Dunham Massey Hall, a national trust property is one of the highlights in this area, along with sporting favourites Manchester United Football Club and Lancashire County Cricket Club. In recent years, visitor attractions such as Waterside Arts Centre with its theatre and art gallery, and Redhouse Farm with its tea rooms and shop have become very popular with groups. The Trafford Centre, a huge indoor shopping complex, is known far and wide but groups will also want to explore the surrounding towns and villages of Trafford which offer a wide range of shopping experiences. Wigan effortlessly mixes character, history and heritage. Day 1: Shop and Discover

AM - Book a guided walking tour of the city centre. The tour will encompass the contrast of the splendid Victorian architecture with the emergence of modern buildings, such as Urbis.
AM - In the morning take a tour of BBC Manchester, the regional television centre for the Northwest of England. Take a look at the studios, present the weather, make your own radio drama complete with sound effects and see what the future holds for the BBC. Tours run regularly on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and last for approximately 90 minutes.
PM - Spend the afternoon looking around the different shopping quarters. If high-end, exclusive labels are what you’re looking for then head on the tree-lined King Street where you’ll find the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Hugo Boss and Armani. Likewise head to Selfridges and Harvey Nichols which grace Exchange Square, where you’ll find another one of the city’s exclusive shopping malls, The Triangle. For familiar high street favourites, walk along Market Street and into the Manchester Arndale for an abundance of high street stores. In the evening, take in the spectacular views of Greater Manchester from the 23rd floor of Beetham Tower at Cloud 23 bar. Day 2: Hidden Gems AM - The John Rylands Library is one of Manchester’s most beautiful buildings. Built in 1890 in memory of the Manchester cotton merchant John Ryland, the library is one of the finest examples of gothic architecture in Europe. PM - Continue down Oxford Street and you will come to the Manchester Aquatics Centre, a purpose-built, state-of-the-art swimming facility, that stands as a fantastic legacy to the success of the Commonwealth Games in 2002. The centre is accessible to all so grab your swimwear and enjoy the afternoon at the only complex in the UK with two 50-metre pools as well as separate diving and leisure pools. In the evening head to the Northern Quarter, Manchester’s bohemian district, home to independent restaurants and bars and the perfect place for a relaxed night out. Try Odd Bar for continental beers, the Bay Horse for a pool table, Trof for a relaxed yet quirky atmosphere and Matt & Phred’s for live jazz music.
