Sightseeing Manchester

TOP 5 HISTORIC FACTS Northern England is steeped in history from the Vikings to the Industrial Revolution.
BIRTHPLACE OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
Manchester was the world’s first industrial city. It was classed as the cotton-making capital of the world in the 18th century and dubbed ‘Cottonopolis’ and the ‘Warehouse City’ during the Victorian era.
ROLLS ROYCE
In 1904 Frederick Royce produced the first car from his factory in Cooke Street, Hulme. He soon attracted the attention of Charles Rolls and following a meeting at the Midland Hotel, they then set up the world-famous car manufacturing company bearing their names.
BLACKPOOL TOWER
Modelled on the Eiffel Tower, standing at 518 feet tall, this icon of British seaside resorts opened in 1894. The stunning ballroom at its base has played host to many famous names as well as being the home of British ballroom and latin dancing for over 100 years.
BEATRIX POTTER
In 1905 Beatrix Potter purchased Hill Top in the Lake District with the proceeds from her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. It has been preserved by the National Trust and has not been altered for over 100 years.

A statue of President Abraham Lincoln resides in Lincoln Square, on Brazennoze Street, Manchester. It features a letter from Lincoln to the people of Manchester, thanking them for their support to boycott Southern Cotton, in protest against the use of slave labour.

Hull has been named UK City of Culture 2017, and as part of this has produced an arts and cultural programme for the year to celebrate its people, history and geography. As part of this there is a whole host of musical events taking place throughout the year from live outdoor performances looking back over Hull’s musical heritage with Nick Boldock of Hull Music Archive.
A key musical heritage venue is The New Adelphi Club. Originally a three bedroom terraced house built in 1888, it was converted into a venue in the 1980s, the New Adelphi Club is now Hull’s leading venue for original live music, having played host to bands such as The Housemartins and Pulp. They are also in the 2016 CAMRA Good Beer Guide for their selection of real ales.

If you’re looking for afternoon tea with family or friends, my faves are Hotel Gotham or Richmond Tea Rooms in the gay village. For pre-dinner drinks I always head to Mr Cooper’s Bar in The Midland Hotel, followed by Don Marcos Italian which is definitely my top pick Italian in the city!

Here Michael tells us why Manchester is his favourite city and why he loves living here. What is your favourite place to visit in Manchester? Whether I am going out with family, friends, or even by myself, these are my favourite places. Ezra & Gil in the Northern Quarter for breakfast and coffee is the perfect start to the day, especially after a workout. When meeting friends, I always visit Annie’s Tea Room and Restaurant. Finally, I would end the day with a hotel room at King Street Townhouse. Which hidden gems do you think visitors should definitely explore? I definitely think my hidden gem is the gay village bar New York New York. It’s a family owned and run bar that has the best party tunes and cabaret in Manchester. It is hidden behind Canal Street and is by far the best night out in Manchester. Even the music legend Prince wanted his after party at the bar a few years ago. What’s your favourite memory of Manchester? Manchester is amazing for gigs and concerts. Over the years I’ve seen Janet Jackson, Oasis, George Michael, Kylie Minogue, Spice Girls, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Britney Spears and Prince, but without a doubt, no one rocks the city like Madonna. It’s not just a concert, it’s a life event that you’ll remember forever.
Who is your favourite Manchester icon and why? William Roache. Although not from Manchester, he is the longest serving actor in Manchester-based soap opera Coronation Street, and my favourite icon. He is the kindest gentleman I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. I have served lots of actors over the years from Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford and Al Pacino to Julia Roberts and Helen Mirren but William is still my absolute favourite. If you only have 24 hours in the city, what are the top places you make sure you visit? I’ve mentioned all my fave restaurants and bars above so if I had 24 hours in Manchester I would say any visit must include Manchester Art Gallery. It’s free to enter, recently had a Vogue Magazine exhibition and currently has a collection of twenty two Mary Quant outfits.
Salford Quays is only a short tram ride away, with bars, restaurants and the iconic Lowry theatre. The lights from the surrounding buildings reflected on the Salford basin in the evening is magical and there is always something happening in the area. Further out of town in Greater Manchester you have Altrincham Market, a favourite of mine for fresh fish, bread, cheese and flowers or just down the road, intu Trafford Centre for your big name stores for style and eating. Northern England is so easily accessible from Manchester, where would you go on a day trip? Half an hour from Manchester’s Victoria train station is Hebden Bridge, a beautiful village with canal and river walks, independent shops, cafes and restaurants. It is also the birthplace of famous pop star Ed Sheeran. Feed the ducks, have a wine by the water and then it’s a five minute walk back to the train station. If you could sum up Manchester in three words what would they be? Busy, exciting, and fun. A must visit!

Which hidden gems do you think visitors should definitely explore? The real hidden gem of Manchester for me, is actually how close and accessible it is to all the places in Northern England. Great places like the Lake District, with its beautiful lakes and mountains!

What’s your favourite memory of Manchester? My favourite memory in Manchester is definitely the Christmas markets that start mid-November. With so many stalls to get lost in, lots of different foods and a great location to end the night with drinks in a warming atmosphere, it is perfect for winter time!
Who is your favourite Manchester icon and why? My favourite icon would have to be TV star Michelle Keegan; she is just so down to earth and seems so fun! Michelle was born in Stockport, which is just 10 minutes from the city centre by train and well worth a visit for its historic buildings and markets.

My favourite place to visit in Manchester is definitely intu Trafford Centre for shopping, dinner and drinks. If I had 24 hours in Manchester I would definitely make sure I made the most of the shops and bars, whilst walking around to take in all the different attractions the city has on offer. I love Alchemist in Spinningfields for cocktails and my favourite restaurant is definitely Tattu, it’s so quirky and the décor is just fabulous!
Northern England is so easily accessible from Manchester, where would you go on a day trip? The Lake District is a great place to escape; also Chester, Blackpool and Liverpool are not too far and definitely worth a visit. York is by far my favourite though, with its old fashioned streets and little shops where you can find unique gifts. I would recommend Lucia for great food and wine and Bora Bora for cocktails. York also has a great selection of attractions to keep you busy, including York Minster, York Dungeons and a sightseeing tour bus that is lovely come rain or shine. If you could sum up Manchester in three words what would they be? Fun, exciting and vibrant!

KEY EVENTS & FESTIVALS IN NORTHERN ENGLAND 2017 Offering an unrivalled events calendar, from world premieres in the arts to international sporting events, Northern England truly does offer something for everyone. The world’s first festival of original, new work and special events, Manchester International Festival (MIF17), returns on the 29th of June for two weeks of artistic celebration in Manchester city centre. The opening event at this years’ festival is entitled “What Is the City but the People?”; a selection of individuals from across Manchester will walk along a runway through Piccadilly Gardens in this selfportrait of the city, with live music from Graham Massey assisted by a mix of local musicians. Festival Square, located in Albert Square, once again promises to be a city centre hub for festival activity.
