It’s easy to get lost on the large and busy fairgrounds. Selecting a specific spot in advance is a good idea in case of separation. A particular gate or building is a better place than a larger site like a grandstand or amusement ride.

The 2019 Washington County Fair Program - 13
X
An agricultural tradition for over 100 years Dating back to 1883, the Washington County Fair has been the ultimate culmination of agriculture and entertainment for residents of Washington County. The fair exhibits the hard work and dedication of those involved in the agriculture field and allows everyone to come together and enjoy the best of what the area has to offer. Every year a multitude of attractions draws people to the fairgrounds to celebrate. Whether it’s the tractor pulls, the rides, the food, winning prizes or the educational experience of discovering the vast agriculture of the county, people pour into the fairgrounds each year. For the first six years of its existence the fair was held in the Town of Jackson and was hosted by the Farmers and Mechanics Agricultural Society. After its time at Lake Lauderdale Park in Jackson, a new society called the Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society and Stock Breeders Association took control and relocated the fair to a new location in Cambridge. In its time at the Cambridge location, the fair grew exponentially more popular and began to draw crowds from further away. Prior to the popularization of private automobiles, trains were the ideal way for scores of “out-oftowners” to make their way to the fair. The Delaware & Hudson Canal Co. Railroad offered a very popular service at the time; the company would supply round trip rides to and from the fair, which would also include admission. Residents from Granville, Fort Ann, Fort Edward and
other areas could all utilize this service for under $3. The popularity of the Cambridge site was probably due to the fact that it included 40 acres, stables for 200 horses, a half-mile track, a 2,500-seat grandstand, and seven acres of
at the intersection of Route 29 and Old Schuylerville Road in Greenwich, which was initially purchased as a 25-acre plot but has grown immensely ever since. The 1960s and 70s in particular saw drastic expan-
Washington County Fairgrounds circa late 1960s. buildings. Perhaps the largest impact that the Cambridge location had on the fair was in 1929, when the fairground garnered the power of electricity. World War II had a negative impact on the fair, as the fairgrounds were not open during the war, leading to its bankruptcy. The bankruptcy could have stymied the growth of the fair or destroyed the fair all together, but ultimately, it didn’t. The Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society and Washington County Junior Fair, which were previously two separate organizations, joined forces and in 1954 the fair was conducted at the intersection of Routes 29 and 40 in Greenwich, the present-day location of the Hannaford Supermarket. The two Boards of Directors, although working together, were still separate boards, and they decided to move the fair in 1961 to its current location

sion of the fair grounds, which allowed the event to become the spectacle that it is today. “There were new buildings added almost every year through the 1960s and 1970s and further additions were made in the 80s and 90s,” said JoAnne Booth. “It’s an ongoing thing. Our fair is extremely fortunate to have the buildings and facilities that are here.” In 1967, a 43-acre parcel was added on to the grounds and four years later a dormitory was added to supply housing for the large number of kids involved in the fair, especially those involved in the 4-H and Future Farmers of America programs. In 1977, a historic school house was erected at the fairgrounds. The 1970s also saw some events and attractions come and go, such as pony racing which lasted three or four years. In 1991, the Cambridge Valley Agricultural
Society Board of Directors and the Washington County Junior Fair Board of Directors, which had been working together for decades, finally merged into one 32-member volunteer board. The name of the new organization was simply the Washington County Fair Inc., which has stuck as the name ever since. In 1999, the agriculture center was built and in 2008 another 40 acres were thrown into the mix to make sure there was plenty of room to park for the thousands who come, while also allowing some room for potential expansion of the event. Currently, the fairground stands at 120 acres and the fair is now the largest tourist attraction in Washington County, with more than 120,000 people flocking to it from all over the country each year. This year’s fair kicks off on Monday, Aug. 19, with the gates opening at 5 p.m. The gates will open at 9 a.m. the remainder of the week, through the final day on Sunday, Aug. 25. Admission is $12 per day; all week passes are available for $36 Kids 13 and under get in free, do active military with a valid ID. On Wednesday senior citizens with an ID 62 years old and older will have $6 admission. New this year on Thursday, Veterans with an ID will receive a $6 admission. There will be a carnival fun day, senior citizen day, children’s day and family fun day, each offering unique discounts. As usual, parking is free.
Wash Your Hands The Washington County Fair asks visitors to follow posted signs and practice safe hygiene when visiting our Fairgrounds. Interacting with animals is an important part of the fair experience. Despite the many benefits of interacting with animals, people should be aware that animals can carry germs that make people sick. Animal born disease can cause a variety of illnesses, from minor skin rashes to serious infections. Diseases that pass from animals to humans are called zoonotic diseases and can include E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter. Older adults, pregnant women, young children and people with weakened immune systems may be especially vulnerable. By following some simple health tips, you and your family are less likely to get sick from touching or being around animals at the Fair. Fair visitors should wash their hands with soap and water before and after touching any animal and never eat, drink or put anything in your mouth while in an animal exhibit or contact area. We also encourage parents and caregivers to consider leaving strollers outside and carry small children when visiting in these areas. Adults should supervise hand washing for young children making sure children wash hands properly with soap and water after interaction with animals. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available. The Saratoga County Fair has Hand Sanitizer Stations located in primary areas on the Fairgrounds to supplement our restroom sinks. These stations are available in food areas as well as in animal contact areas.

Rides soar into the fair The Washington County Fair rides will be supplied by Amusements of America, one of the nation’s premier carnival operators. Amusements of America was founded more than 70 years ago when the Vivona family purchased the 1939 World’s Fair. The experienced Vivona brothers bring spectacular family and kiddie rides, as well as those looking for thrills. They also provide a variety of popular games and carnival food. “Our family-friendly environment features clean, well maintained, state-of-the-art ride equipment, operated by trained and competent personnel,” their website says. “Our fabulous flashing light and color displays and exciting
music all combine to furnish the ultimate in a thrilling carnival experience.” “My brother, Morris, will be on site to oversee all the attractions,” said Dominic Vivona. “Other Vivona family members include Marco, Rob, John, and original founders Dominic, Jr., and Philip. Let me not forget to mention that this past year founder Morris, Sr., passed away at 97 years old.” Dominic Vivona highlighted an assortment of this year’s rides:
“Chaos - riders sit with feet dangling as the claw begins rotating and the pendulum swings back and forth. Rock ‘n’ Roll - a music ride with free swing tubs spiraling around a track. Supershot – riders propel down a 100-foot-drop tower. Pharoh’s Fury – giant swing ship that puts riders 50 feet in the air. Kiddie rides: Merry Go Round. Hog Wild - a motorcycle attraction around a track. Windjammer – a hanggliding attraction that kids
can raise and lower seats. There will be plenty of other rides throughout the fairgrounds. “Not sure what ride is right for you or your child? Our rides are categorized at five different levels including spectacular rides, thrill rides, family rides, and kiddie rides,” the website says. “Each ride listed on our website includes a thrill scale to help riders decide if a particular attraction meets their level of comfort. Rides with a thrill level of five are categorized as most aggressive while rides ranked with a level of one are categorized as having a low thrill.” For more information on the level of rides, visit http://www.amusementsofamerica.com/aoa/midway/midway.asp

MUSIC The Big Sky Country Band Where: Entertainment Tent 1 When: Saturday, 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. The Big Sky Country Band is a high-energy, modern country band that takes pride in its musicianship and professionalism. A true country music fan will not be disappointed. Formed in 2013, the band struck a chord establishing itself as one of New York’s premier country cover bands. Its versatility with music affords them to cover the best of the country artists. Their song repertoire features their own originals, including five-part harmonies, and music from Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Johnny Cash, Shania Twain, Blake Shelton, Travis Tritt and everything in between. The band has distinguished itself from the pack, and they’re sure to keep you dancing all night long. Brad Gardner (acoustic guitar), Matt Howenstein (lead guitar) and Leland Bunting (acoustic guitar) bring songs to life with top-level guitar playing, while Rikk Anderson (steel guitar) adds a melody element. Alex Fuller (drums) and Eric Baumes (electric and upright bass) lay down the foundation of the band’s music.
Bobby Dick Bobby Dick began his entertainment days singing “Doo-Wop” in the subways of Brooklyn. Eventually Dick became the leader of Bobby Dick & The Sundowners, which opened for the Rolling Stones, The Who, Tina Turner, the Monkees, the Righteous Bros., the Dave Clark Five, and Jimi Hendrix. The band played at the Copa Cabana, the Café Wha, The Palace Theater, The Peppermint Lounge, The Wagon Wheel, The RPI Fieldhouse, Las Where: Entertainment Tent 1 Vegas, Forest When: Wednesday, 6:00 Hills Stadium, and 8:00 p.m. and the Hollywood Bowl. In 2011, Dick ventured out as a solo act. Today, as a duo with his wife Susan, there is not an act to be found that has a repertoire as deep and diverse as Bobby Dick with Susie Q. From rock ‘n’ roll, to country, soul to pop… be ready to sing along and reminisce the songs of yesterday… the music of today… and don’t be surprised if you find yourself tapping your feet and hitting the dance floor.

The 2019 Washington County Fair Program - 45
Friday is Career and Technical Education day Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs provide students who are hands-on learners an opportunity to master academics and technical skills within subject areas that interest them. The Washington-SaratogaWarren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES has sponsored Friday’s events for this year’s fair and will offer a full day of events featuring students demonstrating some of the BOCES technical programs. Maribeth Macica, the organization’s senior public information specialist, said CTE programs are for students entering 11th and 12th grades from the 31 school districts within their fivecounty region. The students attend one of two technical education centers located in Saratoga Springs and Hudson Falls. “They graduate with industry credentials that they can use to go on to college, a technical school or go straight into the work force,” Macica said.
The purpose of the Career and Technical Education demonstrations is to spread the word about the 24 programs available through the BOCES CTE program and to answer questions about what is available. “We feel it is important to introduce parents to what their children can do in the coming years,” Macica said. “Students will demonstrate the skills they have acquired at CTE to show the public what these programs are really all about and to give kids and their parents a preview of what they can do if they choose CTE.” The program allows students who know what they want to pursue to get a head start on their career field and allows those who haven’t yet decided what their future holds to explore a variety of options. “It’s hands-on and exposes the students to these opportunities early,” Macica said. 4-H gets youth involved Many youth in Washington County look forward to the fair. The Washington County Fair continues to offer 4-Hers as well as all youth opportunities to grow through exhibits of projects, showing animals or volunteering. “We are all about building and developing youth into active and contributing members of their communities,” said Chrys Nestle, the 4-H Extension Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension. “The Washington County Fair is a great platform for them to experience many of these opportunities.” 4-H offers many activities through four program areas – Science, Technology, Engineering, Math; Healthy Living; Citizenship, Leadership and Animal Science. Youth spend a great deal of time preparing for the fair each year. “While not all project work can be entered in the fair, youth can be very creative in exhibiting the new skills and knowledge they’ve gained throughout the year” Nestle said. The range of activities for
4-H participants is exciting. Some members raise and show animals – not only dairy cows but beef cows, chickens, rabbits, goats, sheep and pigs. Youth also showcase home grown vegetables, baked goods, and photography for judging. Clubs also can enter displays in the fair. The club exhibits is a good place to see what clubs have been doing over the past year. Photography continues to be popular category for exhibits, and has gotten
more diverse with the digitally enhanced photo classes. All submissions are judged by a volunteer evaluators using the Danish System. Instead of first place, second place etc., this evaluation method focuses on recognizing what the children have accomplished. Judges primarily consider age and the amount of work dedicated to the project. Entries are then awarded blue, red or white ribbon for excellent, very good and worthy. Another valuable experience gained within the exhibition process is communication skills as youth converse with their judge about their project. Judges are encouraged to engage the youth to talk about their project, what they liked and what they thought was challenging. “Part of their success,” Nestle said, “is being able to have a conversation with the judges.” However, if a child has
nothing of their own to display, volunteers are always welcome in other areas. Youth can volunteer in the 4-H Food Booth, be a junior superintendent or do an activity with fairgoers in the Youth Building. Everyone involved is able to contribute to the goals of 4-H and lend a helping hand at the fair. The 4-H Food Booth will return this year offering hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and more. They also offer a full breakfast until 9:30 every morning. The Milkshake Booth offers cones and shakes. Proceeds are used to support the 4-H clubs, educational trips, 4-H volunteer trainings and college scholarships. Both venues are operated by 4-H members and volunteers but all are welcomed to help out. This is a great community service opportunity. “They work hard and gain valuable work experience that can help them later on when applying for jobs,” said Nestle. “Probably what they remember most are the relationships they form. Most of the kids love meeting people and making new friends.” “The fair and 4-H provide youth with opportunities for growth and mastery, become more independent, share their generosity and experience a sense of belonging,” states Nestle. And what are the 4 H’s? The answer is in the pledge: I pledge my Head to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service and my Health to better living; for my Club, my Community, my Country and my World!

The Cheese Lady In the creative world of culinary arts, Sarah Kaufmann has literally carved a unique niche. The former graphic artist has focused her talents on cheese – not making it, or painting it, but carving it. Her work has ranged from a 10-pound violin, to a 300-pound gorilla, to a 1,900-pound astronaut and to a 2,185-pound Year of Dairy Cows cheese creation that was displayed at the Indiana State Fair. Kaufmann’s Where: Ag. Center cheese-carving career evolved from milking parlor her experience in When: Tuesday - Sunday food marketing and All Day promotion where she learned a special event can be a catalyst for drawing media attention and building retail sales. Her decision to become a cheese carver combines her artistic talents and marketing skills to entertain and educate consumers, the media, retailers and chefs. Known as “The Cheese Lady,” Kaufmann has received hundreds of commissions for her work. She creates sculptures in her studio and sculpts cheese at countless venues including many fairs. Although she uses many kinds of cheese, she works most often with mild yellow or white cheddar.
Kaufmann returns to the Washington County Fair for the fifth straight year and will display her talents on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the milking parlor. She invites fairgoers to stop in to, talk with her, and to enjoy delicious free samples of Cabot cheese.
Visit www.washingtoncountyfair.com The New Incredible Talking, Milking Cow Aggie Culture, Aggie for short, named by Name the Cow contest winner Amanda Perkins of Hudson Falls NY, is found in the AG Center. The incredible Milking Cow is an interactive educational tool, allowing children of all ages to learn the art of milking and to learn about the dairy industry. Kids can take turns milking Aggie. The fiberglass milking cow is handmade and hand painted. A hidden pump delivers constant fluid from the holding tank to the udders to the authentic stainless steel milking pail. The Incredible Milking Cow talks and will say things like “I have quite an appetite. I eat 40 pounds of food every day…and then I wash it down with about a bathtub full of water!”

Cabot Cheese celebrates 100 years! Cabot Cheese is celebrating 100 years this year! Cabot farmers commitment to making the worlds best cheddar and dairy products has never been stronger. They have always believed that delicious products are the reward of a job well done. In 1919 Cabot, Vermont farmers joined together to turn their excess milk into butter and cheese. At the cost of $5.00 a cow and a cord of wood to fuel the boiler they purchased the local creamery. By 1960 Cabot’s membership reached 600 farm families. It was
during this time that their cheese and butter was marketed by the Cabot brand name. In 1992 Cabot’s farmers merged with 1800 farm families of Agri-Mark thru out New England and New York. The brand is 100% owned by their farmer members. Thru out the years Cabot has purchased more plants and and made numerous upgrades to all of their plants. It’s the Cabot Farmers and their dedication to producing the highest quality milk that has earned Cabot the Worlds Best Cheddar.
ROSICK WELL DRILLING
Agri-Mark Inc made their appearance at the Washington County Fair in the early eighties. At that time Young Cooperators along with staff visited with non Agri-Mark farmers in hopes to get them to join the co-op. Following the merger of Agri-Mark and Cabot in 1992 it became all about the cheese. Members and staff
spend their time talking about Cabot Cheese and providing samples of different flavors of cheddar cheese. Many of our farmer owners exhibit cattle at the fair and love to incorporate Cabot signage in their display. It helps open up a discussion about their farm and their part in making Cabot Cheese.

FFA presents the Famland and more The Future Farmers of America Farmland is a joint venture among Greenwich, Granville, Argyle, Salem, Schuylerville and Hartford high school agricultural science students. Agriculture teachers from each participating school meet before the end of the year to plan the layout, schedule and available animals for the Washington County State Fair. The week before the fair more than 50 FFA members from the various schools meet to set up the Farmland so it is ready for animals and to host the thousands of fairgoers that walk through the building each day. This year’s animals include calves, chickens, chicks, goats, pigs and pig-
lets. There will be a kids’ classroom, educational videos and corn box, something like a sand box, while also being surrounded by agricultural facts. The high school FFA members work together throughout the week caring for the animals and interacting with the public by answering questions and helping pet animals. FFA members also participate in a wide variety of other activities throughout the fair. The entire Washington County Dairy Princess team is all FFA members and will split their responsibilities between the Washington County Dairy Princess booth located in the Agriculture Center and the FFA Farmland.

Museum, Schoolhouse Display Heritage The Farm Museum is open on the fairgrounds from May to October. It depicts rural life in Washington County, New York, during the 1800s–1940s. To make life easier and faster, local farmers developed an assortment of work tools. Although many of the inventions did not last, the Farm Museum collection was used or manufactured in Washington County. “Each year we try to have something different,” said Joan Prouty, education director at the museum. This year’s demonstrations held outside from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. include: Paper marbling with John Bielick. Prouty explained that paper marbling is a form of aqueous surface design which mimics smooth marble primarily used in designing book covers. Little John will be presenting broom making. His rustic brooms are 100% handcrafted utilizing all natural broom corn and hand-selected handles of varying types of wood. Woodturning is a unique form of woodworking that uses a tool called a lathe that allows wood to be turned on its axis to create a wide variety of objects including bowls, plates, chair legs, table legs, spindles, pens, goblets, boxes, and more. The Pottery Lady will also be at the fair. Inside the museum is a special display on natural dyes. Demonstration times will be announced daily. Additionally displayed will be ox yokes. Another artifact is the corncrib, which has an
updated display with corn sheller’s and other harvesting items. Inside the milk house is a scale model of the Fort Ann milk plant where farmers took their milk to be shipped to processing plants, and the summer kitchen has culinary herbs growing in a planter outside. The one-room Perkins Hollow Schoolhouse was first used in 1853. It closed in 1910 untouched until it was donated and moved intact to the fairgrounds. In 1984 it received a Washington County Historic Preservation Award and in 2010 recognized as a Landmark Schoolhouse listed on the Country S ch o o l Association of America National Schoolhouse Registry. Currently, the schoolhouse offers a multitude of educational programs. Inside the school there are 18 desks, the teacher’s desk and chair, another chair for company, charts used as teaching aids, a low bench used as an extra seat or moved close to the wood stove on a cold morning, a water pail ,and long-handled dipper stool. At the Perkins Hollow Schoolhouse on select days and times to be determined will be woodshop demonstrations, quilting, tatting (a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace from a series of knots and loops), rug hooking, and other domestic arts demonstrations. Support Local Agriculture Over a 129,000 people visited the Washington County Fair last year, enjoying the animals, entertainment, carnival rides, and of course the FAIR FOOD!! With that many people visiting the grounds enjoying the French fries and milkshakes, the food vendors go through a lot of ingredients! Ever wondered where all those supplies come from? Over the years many of the food vendors have met and developed relationships with local farms in the area to supply them with all the potatoes they need for that perfect fry and the freshest milk available to make those

thick shakes. This year the Washington County Fair is encouraging all of the food vendors to source their supplies locally from farms and producers within Washington County and New York. Wondering where the perfect potato comes from – be on the lookout for signs in the vendors booths, those that use local farms and producers will have a sign letting you know where their ingredients came from. As you enjoy your bucket of fries or that large milkshake, you are also supporting a local farm!

The Big Push Birthing Center Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25 Witness the miracle of life unfold, at The Big Push Birthing Center - Washington County Fair. Visitors to The Big Push Birthing Center, located inside the dairy judging tent, will get a first-hand look at the beauty of new life that farmers get to see on their farms many times throughout the year. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn how our cows are cared for and how we raise them to be strong and healthy. The Big Push Birthing Center is staffed by volunteers experienced with caring for dairy cows. They
will answer questions from visitors and will keep the animals comfortable and safe. An experienced herdsperson and a veterinarian are on staff to assist the cows with the birthing process. The Big Push Center will be open from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday and Sunday. It is our hope to have a total of six births over the weekend, but much will depend on Mother Nature. This is a free exhibit for fair goers of all ages and gives them the opportunity to witness the miracle of life unfold.

Fairgrounds home to more than fair Every year thousands of people flock to the Washington County Fair to revel in the joy and entertainment of fair week. It’s estimated upward of 120,000 people filter through the turnstiles every August. But there’s a lot more happening at the fairgrounds than just the fair itself. While no other single event can boast of such large crowds, the fairgrounds remain a busy place throughout the year. For seven months of the year, from April through October, the fairgrounds play host to a variety of notable events. The Washington County Antique Fair and Flea Market spends two weekends a year at the fairgrounds— the first weekends in May and August—and features more than 200 vendors from throughout the United States and Canada. Dealers sell a variety of rare antiques, hard to find collectibles and a myriad of crafts. And because the show is traditional-
ly held a week before the Brimfield, Mass., antique show, there are many items that appear for sale for the first time. The 2020 shows will be held the first weekend in May, and the first weekend in August and feature vendors in both indoor and outdoor venues. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is also an “early buyer” pass, which gives guests access to the show during setup on Friday. To learn more visit fairgroundshows.com. For the past four years the fairgrounds have hosted the Adirondack Wool & Arts Festival, a two-day celebration featuring more than 120 vendors from throughout the Northeast. The weekend includes workshops, demonstrations, livestock shows and much more. This year’s event will be held on Sept. 28 & 29. For more information, visit www.adkwoolandarts.com
Other notable events held at the fairgrounds are the Tour of the Battenkill, America’s largest one-day Pro/Am cycling race, and the Friends of The Washington County Grasslands IBA (Important Bird Area) Winter Raptor Festival. The fairgrounds also host a number of smaller events by local groups and organizations. Horse, cow and rabbit shows, dog agility trials, livestock sales and other agricultural events are held there throughout the year. Local Scout groups and 4H clubs often hold events at the fairgrounds, and the Washington County Seniors held their annual picnic there last month. The grounds are also available for family reunions, wedding receptions, corporate events, fundraisers and other private events. To learn more about the events held at the fairgrounds or to inquire how you could hold your own event, visit washingtoncountyfair.com.

Got Milk? There is nothing better than starting your day off with a nice glass of milk! But have you ever wondered how it ended up there? Visit the Ag Center all week long to watch the dairy cows exhibiting at the fair get milked, the milk cooling process and storage before it gets picked up by Stewart’s early every morning. The milking parlor has 12 stalls which work independently of each other, is prepped and run all week long by Delaval, Archdale Agriculture Products, and the fair staff. Every day the milk is cooled and tested for bacteria and antibiotics just like the milk from any other dairy before t is transported and pro-
cessed. During the fair milking times, local dairy farmers and dairy staff are available at the parlor to explain the milking process and to answer any questions from fair goers about the dairy industry. So when you come to the Fair, be sure to stop by the milking parlor in the Ag Center and watch this amazing cow milking process at work. While you are there enjoy samples of Cabot’s famous cheese, visit the Dairy Princess Booth, purchase some delicious milk from Battenkill Creamery and see the many other exhibits on display at the Ag Center.

Fair hosts baking contest Baking contests sponsored by national companies are usually only held at major state fairs, but the Washington County Fair is one of the rare county fairs that can boast of a contest supported by the King Arthur Flour Company. The event was brought to the fair by Mike Bittel, the former King Arthur Flour Senior Vice
President/General Manager who lives in Washington County, and who lobbied for a local version of the national baking competitions. Bittel will be one of the judges at this year’s event. This year, adult contestants will compete to prepare a whole grain sandwich yeasted bread
