FEATURE STORY
It was just something to do in the spring. That’s what Dragons catcher, Garrett Boulware thought. Although football was his longtime love, the game of baseball came easy during high school in Anderson, South Carolina. “I had some non-serious football injuries during high school, and just started to question if the life was for me,” Boulware said. “It was tough because the goal was always football for me growing up, since it was passion. Baseball was just the thing I did in the spring. I worked hard at it, but it wasn’t my number one sport.” While Boulware may have loved football, he certainly answered his calling in with baseball. He assumed a leadership role as the catch for T.L. Hanna High School and soon made headlines being dubbed as the secondbest catcher in the state by South Carolina’s scouting service, Diamond Prospect. Thanks to a .533 batting average, nine home runs, and 27 RBI during his senior year, Boulware was selected in the 42nd round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. After consideration, he decided to turn down the selection due to personal reasons. (continued on page 27)
BOULWARE The Cincinnati Reds made an investment in Garrett with a 16th Round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. What they received in addition to their pick was a rock-solid support system. Today, Garrett anchors the Dragons as one of their top leaders of 2015. DAYTON

FEATURE STORY
Ben Boulware is also enrolled at Clemson where he plays football. Highly touted out of high school, Ben was a Top 100 High School Prospect by ESPN and the best overall football player in the state of South Carolina.
Instead of joining the Padres, Boulware stayed close to home and joined the Clemson Tigers, just 20 minutes away from his hometown. His mother was a huge fan of Clemson University, and the decision to commit to the Tigers was an easy one. Garrett put together successful seasons with the Tigers, but found himself making the selfless decision to put his team needs above his own. His personal interest was in improving his draft stock as a catcher, but when the team needed him to play outfield, Garrett grabbed his glove and manned the position.
Together, the two compete against one another to be the best in the family. But, it’s been a foundation of communication and leadership that has helped Garrett succeed with his starting pitchers, and enabled Ben to help run the Tigers’ defense.
“I caught the balls that were hit to me, but I didn’t have much range,” Garrett laughed. “They asked me to do it, so I did.” The switch from catcher to a few games in the outfield was nothing new for him and he felt prepared for situations like this. His father instilled a simple message in him and his younger brother, Ben – communicate or crumble. “It was just one of those things he taught us,” Garrett recalled. Boulware’s father, Jamie, doesn’t have an athletic background, but he’s been able to instill his knowledge and life skills in his sons. “He’s not even a sports guy, he just knows how things work,” Garrett said. “He runs his own business and knows that communication is everything. He always calls on us and tells us that we need to step up and be the man of the situation. Whether we want to be that guy, or not—we have to be.”
