NUPTIAL GROOVES WWW.MYFUNKYWEDDINGDJ.CO.UK 40 Years Past Modernism

An unlikely wedding anthem went straight to number one in the pop charts upon its release 40 years ago this month.

A Town Called Malice by The Jam; Paul Weller’s superb 1982 commentary on the breakdown of community and a way of British working class life that was disappearing under Thatcherism, set to a bouncing Northern Soul beat, is still a safe bet to get men of a certain age into that rare mood which allows them to be dragged reluctantly to a dance floor in a way that few other records from that period can. The song’s continued popularity at weddings, however, is entirely down to it playing a central part in the smash hit British feel good film of 2000, Billy Elliott, which exposed this classic to new generations around the world.

But since Malice is less than three minutes long, by the time a typical man 30 in his 50s or 60s at a British wedding has found somewhere safe to leave his over-priced drink and someone equally safe to keep an eye on it for him, just until he gets back, and has then made his way to the dance floor, the record is usually almost over. It is for this particular reason that I often follow it with another record from that period which usually does the same trick for him, just to make all that effort seem a little more worthwhile. And so the long and instantly recognisable spoken introduction of One Step Beyond by Madness often gets mixed over the closing choruses of Malice and he knows that resistance is futile.

The Jam’s founder, vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, political spokesman and iconic front man, Paul Weller continues to make original music and to inspire devotion in his fans today. From the Style Council years in the 1980s and throughout his hugely successful solo career of the last 30 plus years, The Modfather of Britpop has inspired successive generations of young British men to get a guitar, get into The Small Faces and get a haircut like Steve Marriott’s, and long may that Modernist tradition continue.
