Projects in Motion Alei Mandli Art 130-Fall 2020 St. Norbert College

The House In this project we were tasked with getting to know someone in a matter of 10 minutes and building something that would represent the person we talked too. I talked to Karen who wants to go into architecture, hence why I built a house. I like

talking to people and I like to find out things about people, my original thing that I was thinking of building was completely different than what I expected to build. I like to make sure things are perfect and sending something that is not perfect and not done completely, or

done at the last minute is really stressful to me. I like to take my time in finding out information and I like to be in the zone, this exercise was very last minute and very hard to focus on what to do or make. I think I asked good questions. I think I would have asked more though.

Dots and Lines The whole point of this project was create and image with a component of one dot and two lines two lines and one dot or all lines or all dots. We need to make it fit with words like: -Stability -terror -rejection -chaotic -joy -freedom -energetic -exhaustion -oppression -longing -abundance -scarcity

This project changed my attitude about abstraction because I always try to look at something to see what it is and sometimes it is nothing and up to the person’s interpretations. Yes in one of my projects I did the

two lines and a dot and people were saying that it looked too literal like a mountain and a sun and the word was freedom and I was just trying to portray that the dot was free from the bottom of the page and so I tried to not

make something and people think it looks like that so I don’t know how to take that. I think it is good

to limit yourself to the resources you have to create something and I think that is good for your

creative ability to make something and people think it looks like that so I don’t know how to take that.

I think Gestalt is the concept of patterns and the conception of the patterns in a design and how you interpret the piece. I think it is easy for me to make a well crafted project and in the time we had to the project I think I would have liked a little more time to perfect verses just put together and try and to have less time. I like to be detail orientated and in this class I am learning to let go of that precision.

In the project we were tasked with first carving letters out of linoleum blocks and then printing a word of choice a

bunch of different ways depending on the word and how the imagery we chose corresponds with the message of the word. I orig-

inally chose the word Serene and then found out that was way to long so Zen it is. I tried to create relaxation in words.

Letter Printing

I learned that the people who printed books back in the biblical ages must have been really patient people! And that I would like to never print with linoleum letters ever again! I would make the negative space less and fight with the photo copier some more but god help me I just couldn’t!

Object Iteration

The assignment was meant for us to get in the hang of building a poster that has multiple different iterations. This is a helpful skill to have when presenting work to clients and presenting all your ideas on one form. This shows your client a rang of ideas that would be explored.

I learned through my animal that there are several ways of getting your message across without having a literal picture of the animal. The geometric was the most difficult for me because no matter what I did

it looked like a cat. The most enjoyable was the line iteration for me it’s just random and fun and mine actually turned out really well. That I will need to watch more videos and more notes

about everything. I would take more time trying to do things on Photoshop like shading and editing.

In this assignment we were tasked with creating a PSA that is relevant and get experience creating a poster for a client ( a fellow classmate). In a PSA poster you want to call action to an issue and presents a solution for the reader. The topics can range from save sex, smoking and adopting dogs instead of shopping.

PSA Poster Yes in some cases I feel like an image would have made the poster, being limited to text is definitely a challenge but is also something that you may be forced to deal with in the work force. I tried to create a structure that created flow with all the information that was given to me. I tried to make the text visible by using a bigger scale font. I also used some different opacity backgrounds like the two grey scale boxes and one black box. As far as visual Hierarchy I tried to create that with the start of the title on the side of the page. I think that just having experience in only text is something I wasn’t comfortable with, in my current job we always have posters with images and less words. This is something that helps you get creative in your text. Not a lot of people can say that they have the same opportunity to work with only text as we have in this class. This project also opened my eyes to what its really like to have a client and do as they tell you.

Presentation

I chose the designer I did because I was drawn to her involvement in the magazine industry and the impact she left on it. As a kid I loved flipping through the magazines just to get a taste of what was going on in Hollywood. I personally hate speaking in front of other people no matter who they are. I went first just so I could get it out of the way and be done with it.

I really Like Brianne’s artist Paula Scher and Claudia’s artist Debbie Millman, I think both of their involvement in the deign industry is so cool and I definitely would love to get more information about there work and the impacts they have made.

In this project we were assigned to do research on a graphic designer and present there work to the class in a slide show that moved forward every slide every 20 seconds. Talk about a mouth full of information. I enjoyed researching Ansel she was really unique. How cool to be so important in such a big industry! She really has come a long way since she started in the industry.

Sketch Book

Vocational I like to build things with my hands, I always have. I like to be renovate, change and move things around. I like to make spaces feel pretty and functional. If the space doesn’t make sense then I wanna change that. My creative work is more on the renovate side I would prefer to build things instead of painting a picture or making print block letters that for sure.

While at home over quarantine my mom and I took on the project of renovating the bathrooms in the upper level of our house. This took most of quarantine but the results were amazing. We added a new counter top and fresh paint in my moms master on-suite and a new mirror vanity cabinet. In my bathroom which is the main bathroom we completely gutted it. New floors, vanity, sinks, paint, bath tub, tile and shower. This was something that was a challenge and was rewarding in the end.

Meet the Author My name is Alei Mandli and I am a Junior at St. Norbert College in De Pere Wisconsin, I am in an Intro to Design class where I have created this book showcasing all of the work that I have made this fall 2020 semester. During this time in History our county is in the middle of a Pandemic the Covid-19 pandemic to be exact, and this is a class where I have been able to leave all of my worries about the world and just express what I’m feeling during that day in time! I am very grateful to have an outlet to be able to express these crazy times we are living. In the words of Gillies Peress, “I don’t care so much anymore about ‘good photography’; I am gathering evidence for history.”
