From the President Hello Red & White Enthusiasts! Well, I hope that Spring has finally come. It sure took a long time! The late winter sure reeked havoc on a lot of people. As I write this, it looks like milk prices are gaining a little. Hopefully that will brighten things up! We have had some great spring shows in April and some nice sales. The Reds still seems to be in good demand. I congratulate the winners and wish everyone continued success throughout the show season. We want to encourage you to attend the RWDCA Annual Meeting in St Charles, Illinois, June 19th & 20th. Tours are planned to Lenkaitis Holsteins, where they are milking with robots and are developing a fine herd of mostly Red & Whites. Also a tour to Luck-E Holsteins, is planned. Luck-E is one of the best most progressive breeding herds in the world. Many good Reds and concentrating on Polled genetics. We will be presenting awards and selecting a queen at our Annual Banquet. Luck-E Holsteins, the Engel family has donated the scholarship calf this year. Tickets are available from the office and from the Board members. A change this year, we will hold the drawing at World Dairy Expo, so you can purchase tickets until then. We will be giving 3 $1000 scholarships at the convention. Convention time will end my 6 years on the Board and year as President of RWDCA. Although some times have been stressful, I have really enjoyed my time on the board. I have made many new friends and got to new places. All because of the Red & White cow. I wish you all the best and continued success with your Red & White Cattle Sincerely, Gary Janssen RWDCA President

An Update From Your National Red & White Queen Greetings, Fellow Red & White Enthusiasts! It is with great excitement to say that the 2018 show season is here! Show season brings us beautiful weather, planted crops, family BBQs, fans running in the barns, reuniting with fellow enthusiasts, and so many other wonderful things! Personally, I am looking forward to moving home from college and spending the summer working alongside my family. The early morning milkings, bringing newborn calves into the world, and late-night rinses for the show ladies are a few things I have especially missed. I recently attended the Midwest Spring Red & White Show- a small but mighty show of seventyfive animals placed by Brian Behnke. Our late Midwest snowstorm kept farmers from planting in the fields and allowed for many spectators to attend the show. On this crispy April morning, Heritage Sassy Lipstick-Red, a beautiful Diamondback fall calf, received Junior Champion honors. Grand Champion went to the winning four year-old cow, Leawood Spice Girl-Red-ET, sired by Absolute-Red. Serving as your 2017 National Red & White Queen has truly been a privilege and an honor. As the saying goes, ‘all good things must come to an end’, this will be the final Red Bloodlines article of my reign. I look forward to what the future holds for the Red & White Dairy Cattle Association and the great impact your 2018 Queen will have on our organization! Best Wishes, Katie Thompson 2017 National Red & White Queen

Luck-E Holsteins Hampshire, IL

Luck-E Holsteins was established by Dennis & Beth Engel in 1968 after the purchase of their first registered Holstein. Today the herd, with an average size of 160 milk cows, is owned and managed by their sons Matt & Joe Engel. The Luck-E breeding philosophy is to breed truly well balanced cows with width from the muzzle to the pins with a silky well attached udder and high protein. Chest width is the building block of the cow. Cow families are very important on the top and bottom of the pedigree. At Luck-E we believe it not how good your best cow is. It is how good your worst cow is. If you avoid making bad ones the good ones, then the great ones will come. All cows are housed in sand freestalls and milked in a 38 cow tie-stall barn with 19 milk machines. As of December 2014, all +2nd lactation cows averaged EX-90 and all 2-yr-olds Averaged VG-85. To date, Luck-E has bred 368+ Excellent cows including 1 EX-96, 4 EX-95, 29 EX-94, 29 EX-93, & 140 EX-92 or EX-91. There are 2 cow families that make the heart of the Luck-E breeding program. The "K" family which has been at Luck-E since 1980 and the "A" family which came to Luck-E in 1988. The highlight of the "K" family is Luck-E Advent Kandie-Red EX-95 97-MS. Kandie was Senior Champion, Champion Bred & Owned, Best Udder of Show, and Reserve Grand Champion of the 2014 World Dairy Expo! The "A" family is most famous today for Luck-E Advent Asia EX-94 and her two sons, Awesome-Red & Adonis-Red. Asia's daughter, Avalanche Aka-Red is +3.82 Type. One of the highest in the world!

Lenkaitis Holsteins St Charles, IL

Lenkaitis Holsteins is located in St. Charles, Illinois – a suburb just 40 miles west of Chicago. The family dairy farm was started by Albert Sr. and Mary Etta in 1983 with just five animals. Today, the farm consists of 140 Registered Holsteins and is enjoyed by three generations of the Lenkaitis family – including Albert and Mary Etta’s four children and ten grandchildren. The hallmark of the herd has been developing Red & White genetics with balanced type and production. Albert and Mary Etta’s youngest son Andy, along with his wife, Sarah, live on the property just north of the farm. Starting in November 2014, both began working closely with Albert Sr. and Mary Etta to manage Lenkaitis Holsteins. In addition to working on the farm, Andy works for GEA and Sarah is a freelance writer and secretary for the Illinois Holstein Association. Andy and Sarah own several cows together as Andara Holsteins. Last year the farm underwent a renovation, moving the herd from the 37 cow tie-stall barn to a new 110 cow freestall barn. The new barn has been outfitted with latest technology from GEA including an automatic manure scraper, manure solids separator, cow brushes and two GEA Monoboxes for automated milking.
