It is situated on the banks of the Yangtza River Delta in Eastern China. Jing’an district is a central region of the combination between Chinese and Western culture in the Shanghai. It is one of Shanghai’s most densely populated districts. This area is inhabited a lot of foreigners, office workers, senior business people and socialites. Many 5-star hotels are built here, and commercial buildings and a large CBD area are formed; all these are the biggest advantages of this region. All in all, there is no same or similar project in this region, while there is a great demand from these high-end residential areas, CBD area and five-star hotels. The project’s aim is to cater to the people around this area, not only for their physical needs, but also to satisfy their mental pursuits. It will be a perfect place for people to relax, to social contact, to re-charge themselves, to absorb new things and to have some fun.

Climate Shanghai’s climate is generally mild and moist, with four distinct seasons. Spring in Shanghai is from March to May and has an average temperature around 15 to 20°C. It can feature lengthy periods of cloudy. The summer months in Shanghai are June to September and during these months the city experiences high temperatures as well as high levels of rainfall. The temperatures at noontime can reach up to 35 to 36°C with very high humidity. October to November is when autumn comes to Shanghai and the rains and high temperatures of summer drop to being much more comfortable. Winter runs from December to February and is the coldest time of year in Shanghai; the temperatures rarely rise above 10°C during the day, and often fall below 0°C at night. Shanghai rarely has snow fall despite the cold temperatures though there are high levels of humidity that comes with the cold.

BUILDING ANALYSIS
Yu Huashan building was built in 1990 which located in No.328 Huashan Rd, Jing’an District, Shanghai, China. You will see the Yuhuashan standing on a T-crossing road which is adjacent to Huashan Rd and Changshu Rd. The location of building is one of the most high-end area in Shanghai. venient transportation system. North to the CBD of Jing’an distract. The existing building was a luxury commercial-residential building about 145 meters with a 4-story podium and two stories basement. The whole plan of podium is irregular geometry. Firstly, today’s Jing’an District has become the synonym for top-level business district and luxury residential area in Shanghai. In here the hundred-year history of old Shanghai left adeep imprint which is reflected most vividly in the Western and Chinese classical architecture. This also makes it the cultural shock between Chinese and Western cultures, and the fusion zone between nostalgia and fashion. A lot of senior business people, celebrities and socialites live here, many fivestar hotels are built here, and commercial buildings and large high-end shopping centers are formed; all these are the biggest advantages of this region. My project building is located in this charming region. I would like to re-design this building into a high-end integrated entertainment center. Secondly, going to the recreation center for leisure has become a main choice for city dwellers after work and on weekends, especially in the first-tier cities such as Shanghai, Beijing. Through my survey, more than 80% of the respondents expressed the hope for a comprehensive entertainment center in this region. Because there is no same or similar project in this region, while there is a great demand from these high-end residential areas, commercial buildings and five-star hotels. Many respondents hope to have an elegant space for social contact, interpersonal communication, relaxation, entertainment, and business talks. At the same time, these people have high consumption capability. Finally, I decide to re-design the podium—currently occupied by Da Vinci home furnishing exhibition room—of this building. According to research, I found that Da Vinci home furnishing is the domestic ultra-high-end, and luxury imported furniture sales company, but this exhibition room has had a bad sales since 2011. According to the reports from International Financial Times, Da Vinci furniture cheated consumers on both product quality and producing area in 2011 as revealed by CCTV. It sold domestically produced furniture as high-end Italy-produced furniture, leading to a loss of consumer confidence in this brand.

INSPIRATION
Shikumen I was inspired by Shanghai’s unique architectural style, called Shikumen. From 1845 to 1943, Shanghai has been an international settlement. People from different countries, most importance western nations, came to live in Shanghai, and their culture and life styles gradually became an influence on Shanghai. Shikumen architecture stems from this multi-cultural historical background. Shikumen architecture is characterized by the combination of modern apartments built in the British townhouse style, and traditional southern Chinese
courtyard-house. Shikumen buildings have decorative motifs such as the gable wall, an elevated-room between two buildings. Other architectural use of decoration was more western, like floral patterns above doorways, and door frame built in stone. Because of the unique historical and geographical position of Shanghai, it became the biggest, most advanced multi-cultural city. People from different countries, and different cultures live throughout Shanghai.
30
Above: Xin tiandi Below: Tian zifang
Shikumen buildings prevailed in the 1920 s, occupies more than three-quarters of local-style dwelling houses at that time. There is nearly 40% of Shanghai residents still living in Shikumen which has more than a century of the history. Shikumen buildings witnessed great changes nearly a century and a half to Shanghai. In recent years, with the development of Shanghai’s economy and the needs of urban development and the improvement of people living standard. Shikumen begin to be dismantled, because of narrow alley and some lack of health facilities. But there are some shikumen buildings received by other forms, such as “Xintiandi” and “Tianzifang” now has become a famous tourist and business district of Shanghai. Shanghai xintiandi was built in 2001, which is a Hong Kong Ryan group invest in the construction of a modern catering, leisure, entertainment and shopping fashion landmark in Shanghai. On the one hand, the designer kept and maintained the rich elements of Shanghai architectural features, on the other hand the designer created new ideas into the new architectural theme. Shikumen have not only a kind of architectural form, but also a symbol of Shanghai culture.

CONCEPT

Intersection Using this style as inspiration, I use intersection as a design concept. Eastern and Western cultures, traditions and modernity were intersected here, and co-existed. Shanghai, with its diverse and complicated history, developed into a melting pot of people, languages, and cultures. The project’s aim is to cater to the people around this area, not only for their physical needs, but also to satisfy their mental pursuits. It will be a perfect place for people to relax, to think, to re-charge themselves, to absorb new things and to have some fun. Intersection is a process of crossing different elements, passing through or overlapping with each other. Each crossing will produce overlapped portion; this part will create a new thing, and play a role of connection. I plan to develop six elements based on the concept to represent the project. Shikumen architectural style is the most representative of the historical development of Shanghai. It combines Eastern and Western architectural styles of the past, and still is used today. I will also use six key elements of the Shikumen style coming from structure, decoration, materials to be deconstructed and reconfigured to generate design elements.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY
As a person who just started to learn about interior design about two years ago, I think I am still a novice for this field. My affection for interior design has never stopped growing due to the passion towards this industry. I have practiced and worked in related industries for almost three years before I decided to study abroad, but I still continue to work hard become more professional. When I was a child, I was already interested in painting, so I decided to that I wanted to become an artist in the future. I began to formally studying basic painting skills at an art school on the weekends when I was 13 years old. Because of my love of painting, I was admitted to an arts high school. I started to get the more professional education, which including western-style painting, composition, watercolor and sketching. Also, I think my father was another important influence on me. He is a civil engineer and often talked to me about some things of his work in the usual life. I was inspired by his work experiences solving the client requirements, facing new challenges, gaining architectural knowledge, and communicating with different people who working different projects. As an adolescent, when I was about to go to university, I started to think about my major and my career. I liked creating landscape perspective with watercolor. In addition, I enjoyed
seeing the work of architects and knowing what environmental emotion they want to show the user. At last, I chose landscape architecture design as my major, because I thought landscape and environment would be my interests in the future. The last two years in university, I worked for a large paint company as a part-time color consultant. This work experience allowed me to develop communication skills with my clients. After I graduated, I worked for a private home design company as a stair designer. I liked this job, but it leaned towards engineering, while I preferred to more design. I became more and more interested in interior design from that time on. I realized that I needed to gain more skills and knowledge about interior design to improve myself. Fortunately, I got the opportunity to study at the Academy of Art University in 2011. While studying here, I’ve learned that interior design is not a single major in the field. To be a great interior designer, you not only focus on the interior space; you have to be able to understand the construction structure, decorative art, context environment, etc. I want to be excellent in interior design field in the future.
