Currently leading an international consulting group in charge of strategy, planning and urban design/development in Saudi Arabia, Mr. Araujo has a diverse range of public and private project experience, encompassing strategy, planning and urban development, day-to-day client liaison in the US, Canada, Latin America and the Middle East. As an urbanist his career has been a collaborative experience in which, as a part of a team -and often as the lead, he has to fuse urban design, environmental remediation, sustainable master-planning, architectural design and coordination of a diverse multi-disciplinary group of consultants.
Work Experience 2007 – 2010 Between 2008 and 2010 he lead the Pembroke Strategic Growth Master Plan and a multi-disciplinary team of consultants on this master planning effort that will guide an innovative vision for future growth and development within 1,200+ acre, centralized area in Virginia Beach, VA. He also coordinated with stakeholders, local authorities and community representatives so that our team was able to create an exciting, innovative vision for the future development. The Master Plan was adopted by City Council, December 2009.

Work Experience 2008 -2010 Stafford County Master Redevelopment Plan, Stafford, VA In an effort to bridge a gap between long-term development and future Mr. Araujo lead a multidisciplinary team of professionals in the analysis of four areas identified for redevelopment -a total of 3,635 acres identified as economic and community development opportunities. He wrote all project reports and organized public presentations with community stakeholders while overseeing a team of analysts, graphic designers and in-house public relations.

The resulting Master Plan focuses on each area’s core to foster a longer-term community vision of urban mixed community environments woven together with parks & streets to create pedestrian friendly, memorable urban centers and that are envisioned as strategic keys to growth management for the County.
Current Experience 2013 – 2016 Head of Planning Department (HoD), DAR AL Riyadh E&A, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Performing and managing complex planning studies, development applications and reviewing consultant proposals and submissions – including plan amendments, annexations, site plans, drainage, plots and curbs- while scheduling and conducting meetings with boards and officials at Ministry of Housing and Ministry of Transport. Set out policy standards for land use and the public realm, emphasized traffic- transportation options and novel sustainable utilities design. Coordinating and interacting with outside technical professional consultants and multidisciplinary in-house team including; infrastructure, structural, geotechnical, landscape architecture, roads and traffic, cost estimation and quality control. Design Director, Senior Urban Planner for the Living Communities Programme, KSA Mr. Araujo has been in charge of design management and full coordination of multi-disciplinary team of consultants and in-house experts for the Living Communities Programme; overseeing, developing and implementing master plan design for these small cities across the Kingdom -seeking to establish outstanding housing communities in line with his client’s vision and delivering human-scale, people-friendly, sustainable and walk-able communities. Such major undertaking required developing a social infrastructure that includes religious facilities, shopping, recreational community venues and a variety of housing types, as shown in the following project examples in the cities of Hail and Jeddah.
Independently reviewed Design-Build contractors’ submissions, applying diverse knowledge of planning principles and practices in each assignment. Directly oversaw development of Master Plans, building prototype plans and project program throughout design stages up to tender, endeavouring to fulfil environmental planning and sustainability goals with urban, landscape, traffic and infrastructure design. Worked in the development of project budgets, scheduling, administrating bidding process, and verifying contract expenditures and compliance and coordinating that planning vision was delivered ensuring compliance with quality assurance to adhere to program and schedule of deliverables. With these Living Communities (approximately 6,953,864 m2) in the design process, Mr. Araujo has successfully lead a team of international planning firms to develop conceptual design options and deliver the first unique, mixed-use medium density community that is safe, engaging, walk-able and that offer a sustainable lifestyle. And ensuring compliance of design consultants to adhere to schedule of deliverables. Of the seven master planned communities across the Kingdom, the Jeddah 4 Living Community became the programme’s showcase; conceived as an ambitious development introducing an international standard of living in the Kingdom. When completed it will include an estimated 4,167 residential units. Â
