The path of the Passages Boné, St. Pere and the Torrent Lligalbé is formed by a set of vestiges that in the present, due to the transformation of the city, they show a reality that contrast a lot with the dense city scheme that surrounds the area. In this site of the city, formed by layers of history, we recognize ancient medieval paths (Camí del Lligalbé), irregular passages that respond to the appearance of a place where the grid of Cerdà took time to arrive, so as architectures of a spontaneous growth of the beginning of the s. XX. All this qualities form a environment that is quite the opposite of the bourgeois and rational passages of the city that is consolidated, and precisely, is its value. Likewise, the ideal process that should follow this intervention points to a way of working through microsurgery where the result, escaping from being closed and definitive, consists of an urban scene built between what was already there and the new architecture proposed.

Projects I Single Housing for Artists in Bagà Atelier - Ariadna Perich

As if it were a nervous system. The project is based on the concept of a transitional passage which, in addition, aims to link all the elements of the house. The lobby, as the only area built in the central space, is the connection point that separates the day and night areas. Located in the middle of the transition space, it has been thought with a total transparency to avoid breaking the visual continuity that defines with so much emphasis the estructure. The only item that doesn’t lead directly to the lobby is the workshop. Isolated and intentionaly different from the rest of the house, it shows a clear line that separates the living from the working area understanding the fact that you could acees to a separate world. Finally, due to the topography its shape is conditioned causing a strong union with the slope, which is partly reflected in the two acceses of the house and the english courtyard of the workshop.

03 CONCRETE FRAME

Projects I Pavilion Bar and Children’s Daycare in Bagà Atelier - Ariadna Perich

A frame for the landscape. To limit the horizon in a strategic way so it can explain us itself through architecture. The aim was to achieve a proposal that would visually connect Plaça Tiraval and the river through an absolute transparency. The project works with two floors, two opposite poles, a glass box and an opaque, closed one. It is considered to obtain a close relationship between them, including open spaces, because if we look at the uses, we realize that all of them need freedom of movement, at least the bar can’t limit the visuals with its closures and, the children’s daycare, needs have a large classroom so the children can play freely. If we are conditioned by a well-defined core, the proposal takes this as an advantage, distributing these surfaces so the rest of the classroom or transition spaces spontaneously emerge. The perimeter of the wall is surrounded with courtyards, which from the beginning provides a good fit easily. The intention is to seek this purity between the two plants and to transfer ideas from one to the other with a sense of unity and order. The final result is a clear proposal that, once defined, allows all its areas to be exploited a lot more.

URBAN SCARS

Projects III Social and Coliving Housing in Raval, Barcelona Atelier - Jorge Vidal

The site is located in an environment defined by the uncertainty, formal heterogeneity in plan and density, typical of old quarters. The proposal is based on the idea of generating ​​ a flow working through an irregularity already present that leads you to the Plaça of Drassanes becoming the end of the Raval district. Despite of being a project that works on the idea of density, ​​ there’s an interest in public space, especially the capacity that buildings have to generate it. The building is modeled defining a series of squares that arise from the intersections of this flow, providing small spaces of quality. The city is understood as a series of relations that don’t need to follow the same directions, but their continuity must prevail. The second approach is to deny the same facade solution for the whole set. If different variables and conditions are available, two typologies are proposed in duality. The first, transparent and flexible, generates vibrations that help direct the flow outside. The second, more opaque and static, is usually arranged for intimate spaces, performing openings with vertical proportions reminiscent of the common scheme of the neighborhood.

05 ISOTROPIC VOID CROSSING BARS

Projects VI Luxury Hotel, in Blanes Atelier - Nacho Lopez

This large empty solar known as the island of Blanes is located between two unconnected areas of the city and reaching the seafront. The program proposed a solution, a park that also had to provide a large number of parking spaces due to the large increase of population and turists in the coastal villages during the summer, along with the rehabilitation of the shipyard converted in mall and a new luxury hotel tower. The first approach consisted of proposing a tree grid in order to give an urban scale, link the two neighborhoods and order the space dedicated to parking spaces as well as squares and landscaped areas. It was decided to place the tower on the seafront with the aim of creating a new skyline for Blanes. The building has a laminar configuration so it divides in two pices where takes place access through them and connects with the mall, ending in the park. The program is organized through a tripartite structure. In the ground floor we find common areas, premises and administration. While the central axis is occupied by rooms that have a central atrium on each floor. Every four floors there is an interruption where common services and facilities of the whole building are positioned. Finally, there is a second four-story block of flats that ends with a walkable roof.

06 OPPORTUNITY TRIANGLE

Thematic Workshop I Public High School in San Andreu Atelier - Profs. Jordi Ros, Oscar Linares, Albert Albareda and Isabel Bach with Josep Rebés and Xavier Pinsach

The new central station that is being built in La Sagrera is the largest urban reform of all that Barcelona has underway. At the epicenter of this park there is a large triangular concrete slab that covers the TMB depots. This point represents the intersection of a post-industrial area and a residential area, where the slab acts as a hinge between a topographic jump of 10 meters. The program was to develop a new school but the scale of the place was far bigger to assume that it could be solve with a single building. The aim was to propose a project of public space. An infrastructure that allows to be occupied according to the needs of the moment, flexible to accommodate various facilities in the future on a large public space. This metal structure has a height of 9 meters that allows, if necessary, an occupation of two floors. The feet that support the Vierendeel beams are inclined metal pillars of variable section that take the structure by four points and carry the efforts at a single point that always coincides with the pre-existing pillars that hold the slab.

07 PERIMETERS

Thematic Workshop II Media&Visual Arts, Kunst University in Graz Profs. Jordi Ros, Oscar Linares, Albert Albareda and Isabel Bach

Due to the context of the urban model of Graz based on interior blocks with private gardens and a very fragmented subdivision, the main goal of the proposal was to provide the city of Graz an urban public space to serve our program and all the connections around it. In this particular point, the Avenue ElisabethStrade, an axis of high continuity,is intersected by a street that goes through the middle witch is a connection for several university facilities. The program, a high dense university with the need for big classroom spaces, is solved with two pieces so that the division in the plot provides the access to both of them. Its implantation emerges from the different urban conditions and the will of remaining in place the two existing buildings with heritage value. The two pieces respond one generating a baseboard perimeter and another classroom adapting to them, connecting each other with three concrete pieces. The facade with translucent polycarbonate helps the entry of light into the classrooms in this cloudy climate and ensures the privacy of the courtyards of neighboring homes.

08 MIXTED PATTERNS

Urban Planning IV Residencial Project for the extension of Gavà Atelier Miquel Vidal and Joan Fortuny

The place is located between two urban areas, Castelldefels and Gavà, being a connection between them, representing a growth for the two towns extending their residential fabric. It is proposed to achieve a small percentage of roads with a dense city model. The project is organized using super blocs that contain different typologies of buildings and uses, and also allowing a large amount of public green spaces in the interiors of the blocs. The main axis becomes a shopping street that is born answering the continuity to the existing street direction. At his south boundary, it is proposed the tallest buildings so it acts as a screen due to the proximity of the train. In the middle of the project, as well as at the ends, it is placed some facilities generating a cultural center, so this way can create activity and movement in the neighborhood.

09 ABSORBING LANDSCAPE

Urban Planning VI New City Limit in San Cugat del Vallés Atelier Marina Cervera with Enric Gimeno and Samuel Aguilar

San Cugat is a city defined by a large presence of urban parks where there is a continuity of greenery which reaches our work place. The eastern limit of the city shows a great landscape of value where there is a green corridor that connects two huge masses, one of them Collserola, which divides San Cugat and Barcelona. The presence of the stream not only define the place but also give it great views. The proposal seeks to achieve a city end that unifies these two realities, the urban parks that reach the city center with the surrounding landscape. This end doesn’t happen suddenly because the proposed buildings act as a filter allowing the landscape to enter the project without ending up being a cut between the city and undeveloped land. Due to the stream, the topography has a steep slope that the proposal respects by adapting the road to the terrain and proposing a diversity of typologies, perpendicular to the level curves, and looking for an opening to the views.

10 LOGIC MESS UP

Urban Planning V Development Plan for an Industrial Area in Bordeus Atelier Sebastià Jornet with Enric Gimeno

Starting by paying attention to the existing constructions of the site, mostly an obsolete industry, and the demand of high buildability, the proposal aims to maintain some of the resting pieces which have a certain value along with the proposed new architecture in order to generate a mix of uses, housing, industry, offices, etc. living together. The area is divided transversely in 4 blocks where each of them has a section with a great variety of heights and building typologies. The main axis of the project crosses longitudinally creating a pedestrian walkway with trade, defining a low-rise center where a series of porched spaces are projected emphasizing its condition as a major street. This axis is related with the different square and green spaces that serve it on each side. The proposed architecture adapts itself to the existing one respecting its relation of heights and proportions.
