GreeN plants o f t h e w orl d Why does one houseplant need a lot of light, while another prefers a location in the shade? Why do some houseplants require a regular douse of water, while others can go without watering for a long time? The answers to these questions take us back to the plant’s original habitat. The Voyage concept by Esperit Forever takes you on a voyage to the region where the plants originally come from, and explains how they live there. Do they live in a damp or dry climate? In warm or cooler temperatures? Do they grow in direct sunlight, or in the shade of other trees? The way plants live in nature is how they wish to live in our home interiors. The Voyage assortment is a selection of Esperit Forever’s most attractive and highest quality green plants.

COLLECTION JUNGLE EXPEDITION
Tropical rainforests are the richest natural habitats in the world. It is estimated that more than half of all known plant and animal species are found in these immense forests. The plants of the ´Jungle expedition´ selection all originate here, in particular from the rainforests of South-East Asia: the Ficuses and the Murraya paniculata. There, these exotic plants tower above all other vegetation, to catch as much light as possible. Ficus There are countless types of Ficus, each with its own unique properties. In the past people used the Ficus elastica to produce rubber, while the Ficus bengalensis, or Bengal Ficus, is considered a holy tree in India. For that reason, in Asia it is often found next to or even inside temples, and the tree can grow into an immense tangle of roots and branches. In fact, the largest tree in the world is a Ficus bengalensis, covering a surface area of almost 2 hectares – or two football fields! The well-known houseplant Ficus benjamina can also grow into a huge tree of up to thirty metres high, in the tropics. And the Ficus microcarpa, discovered in the tropical rainforest by Carl Linnaeus, is now a frequently used tree to line the road in warmer climates. Murraya paniculata The Murraya paniculata is also a tropical plant. This plant, also known as orange jasmine, has wonderfully scented white flowers and small orange-red fruits. The Murraya paniculata is part of the citrus family. Care Given their original well-lit position in the tropical rainforest, the Ficuses and the Murraya paniculata also prefer a light spot in your home. But you should keep them away from direct sunlight, and keep them moist by giving them a bit of water twice a week.

EXPLORE THE JUNGLE Already a true explorer at a very young age, Jan van Geest’s first adventures were just around the house. But once finished with school, Jan van Geest eagerly started hunting for mutants in his father’s nursery; that is, new plants that emerge spontaneously from existing plants. To increase the chance of finding new plants, he promised every co-worker 10 guilders for each mutant they found. That is how most of the new types of plants were discovered at that time. Today Jan van Geest has a more ambitious approach. He regularly travels to distant corners of the earth with one clear mission: to find unfamiliar plants for his Esperit Forever nursery. He roams botanical gardens and penetrates the jungle, searching for new plants and other secrets of mother nature. Over the years he has built up a worldwide network of fellow collectors and hobbyists that all passionately help him in his quest. As a result, many new types have been discovered, some of which may soon find their way to your home! The new plant brand of Voyage by Esperit Forever takes you along on such a trip. Into the jungle, or to the savannah, or through the subtropics. Off to the places where the plant species once were discovered, and where they have their origin. The passion for discovery and the drive to always renew and expand the collection lies at the heart of the philosophy of Esperit Forever. COLLECTION S U B tropical E X P E D I T I O N
The subtropics are located to the north and south of the tropical climate zone. Subtropical climates have a clearly distinguished wet and dry season, with fairly high temperatures all year round. This is the climate in which the plants of the ‘Subtropical expedition’, the Rhipsalis and the Hatiora, feel at home. Rhipsalis and Hatiora The Rhipsalis and the Hatiora originate from the rainforests of South America. There they grow on tree trunks, in the sun or the shade of large trees. The plants belong to the cactus family but do not have any thorns. The Rhipsalis is sometimes referred to as the cactus of the jungle. Although they usually grow on trees, they can also grow on rocks and in cracks. There are countless types of Rhipsalis plants. Some of them grow small flowers at the end or the side of their stems. The Hatiora is named after the 16th-century botanist Thomas Hariot and is closely related to the Rhipsalis. The Hatiora is also called the ‘drunkards dream’, because the small branches resemble bottles. There are five types of Hatiora, but the ‘Easter cactus’ is probably the most popular type. The Hatiora flowers in different colours including red, yellow, pink and purple. Care Because of their original habitat in the subtropics, these plants can cope with high temperatures. So it’s fine to keep them in direct sunlight, without needing much water. It is enough to water them once or twice a week.

The savannah is characterised by a relatively warm and dry climate. The main vegetation is grass, with here and there a tree. The plants of the Savannah expedition grow in the few sheltered spots found there; the Tradescantia, Cyanotis and Callisia. Tradescantia The Tradescantia is found from South Canada to North Argentina, and is at home in several climates. The plant is named after two British gardeners: John Tradescant sr. (1638) and his son John Tradescant jr. (1662). In the service of King Charles I of England, they brought this plant from ‘the New World’ and introduced it in England. There are at least seventy different types of Tradescantia. Cyanotis Joseph Dalton Hooker, a British botanist, was the first to discover the Cyanotis, but it was Raphael Herman Anna Govaerts who first described and classified the plant correctly. Countless types of Cyanotis are known to exist, such as the Cyanotis kewensis and somaliensis. The Cyanotis kewensis was originally found in India, while the Cyanotis somaliensis originates from the arid regions of northern Somalia. The plant’s leaves have hairy edges and it grows small blue flowers in summer. Callisia The Callisia repens is originally from tropical Middle America, Mexico and the southern United States. Closely related to the Tradescantia, it is a perennial evergreen that takes a spherical form. The Callisia has scale-like leaves, and is therefore sometimes referred to as the tortoise plant. Care These plants enjoy a light location but do not tolerate direct sunlight. They do not need much water, so it is enough to water them once a week.

COLLECTION FOREST EXPEDITION
Forested areas are the natural habitat of the plants of the ‘Forest expedition’: the Chlorophytum, Phlebodium, Polystichum and Pellaea. There they grow in the shade of tall trees, away from the direct rays of the sun. Chlorophytum comosum The Chlorophytum comosum, also known as lily grass, occurs naturally in the tropical and subtropical areas of Africa and Asia. According to NASA research, this exotic plant is one of the best air filtering plants. It is an easy plant to grow indoors. It can grow in either a light spot or a shaded spot (without direct sunlight), and tolerates both warm and cooler conditions. Ferns Rain forests and woods are full of them: ferns. There are some 12,000 different types of fern. Ferns like to live in shady and humid places. Some like to grow up against trees in order to catch a bit more sunlight in densely vegetated forests. Ferns are among the oldest plants on earth and have spread to all corners of the globe. Fern fossils have been found that are as much as 400 million years old. Phlebodium aureum This fern is found in the tropical forests of Middle and South America. Because of the hot temperatures there, this plant is rather sensitive to cold. It thrives in moist places in the shade of surrounding trees. Polystichum tsus-simense This fern originates from East Asia and is also known as the Korean rock fern. Not surprisingly, this plant likes to grow on rocky slopes and in the shade of rock walls. Pellaea paradoxa “Glow Star” This small fern was first found in Eastern Australia. It was first described in 1810 by the Scottish botanist Robert Brown, in the book Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae. This book was the first attempt to comprehensively describe the newly discovered Australian flora. It contains over 2040 new types of plants. Care Given their original sheltered habitat, these plants are best kept away from direct sunlight in your home as well. Keep the plants moist by watering them slightly twice a week, along the side of the plant. This helps prevent brown leaves and a bald centre. It is a good idea to spray the plants regularly.

Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Abel Tasman, James Cook: great names from the era of the voyages of discovery. These adventurers travelled far and wide, crossing uncharted oceans and exploring unknown continents. They sought out every corner of the earth to chart new land, but also to trade goods, to spread the Christian faith, and to discover what nature held in store in these other territories. Yet however different their motives might have been, they shared one thing: a passionate curiosity for the unknown. During these expeditions the explorers found many unknown plant species. They described these in books and took examples home for further study. The notion of a houseplant did not exist in those days, and for a long time plants were only used for medicinal purposes or to decorate the gardens of the wealthiest. Only in the course of the 18th and 19th century did people start bringing nature indoors, partly as a result of the increasing urbanisation. That is when the notion of a houseplant arose, which has now conquered a permanent place in our households. PROMOTIE secret o f t h e w orl d The plants of the Voyage collection are supplied in a unique and stylish box. This box brings the atmosphere of the voyages of discovery to your shop, and evokes the original habitat of the plant. It is a real eye-catcher on the shop floor and very recognisable for your customers. The box displays information about the origin of and care for the plants. The back of the box shows the world map with the different climate zones, each with its own colour. These colours are also shown on the plant labels. So you can see at a glance from what type of climate the plant derives and what type of care it requires. An added advantage is that the plants of the Voyage collection are supplied in smaller quantities than usual, with each box containing twelve plants. As the Voyage plant boxes are smaller, they can be fitted perfectly on a Danish trolley, with the front side facing forward. As a result, the Danish trolley also doubles as an attractive means of presentation.
