NICE TO MEET YOU! Hello! My name is Matthew Conner and I am an illustrator and graphic designer.
I studied graphic design and fine arts for four years at Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. This book contains some of my most successful projects from school. I couldn’t have made them without the help of my teachers and classmates who have supported me and pushed me to do my very best. So with that, I dedicate this book to my professors, to my fellow students, and to you, the reader. Please enjoy!

YOGAZOO! YOGA APP
Yogazoo! is an interactive edutainment app designed to teach yoga to kids. This was made with construction paper animals and environments as most kids in the target audience around the 2nd-5th grade age range enjoy cute animal characters and colorful, creative settings. The app comes with yoga session levels, character customization, relaxing ambient audio, and a physical product in the form of a card and calendar set. A motion graphics promo was also made to showcase some of these features (available on Behance). Yogazoo! is a local and regional ADDY Award winner.

WAYBACK CINEMAS
This is a project from my branding class that required us to make a set of design elements to make a unique theme. I wanted to work on a movie theater inspired by 1950’s culture and animations like classic Mickey Mouse and the “Let’s All Go to the Lobby” short. I tried replicating the style of retro, stylized cartoons while also using vocals with my friend Katherine Pacetti to sound like an old timey commercial in a motion graphic advertisement.

EEVEE ALBUM ART
With this project, I wanted to create a design that encapsulates the melancholy tone and feel of Eevee’s music. Eevee is a 25-year-old musician from the Netherlands who makes lofi hip hop beats. The album was originally called “seeds” but it was renamed “fragments” for this project after the opening track. I had a friend model for me in order to create a set of illustrations that would look like doodles taken out of an emotional teenager’s notebook. To keep with the theme of fragments, the illustrations were chopped up and featured numerous flower petals to add to the disjointed nature of the work.

THE SHINING INTRO
As one of the required projects from motion graphics, we were tasked with making an intro to a movie of our choosing. I based my project on The Shining and fleshed it out with a book cover and movie poster in the same visual style. I was inspired by Saul Bass who used minimal shapes in his animated intros and I felt a lot could be done with basic shapes symbolizing the hallways and the maze. The ink reveal is also symbolic of blood and ink which pertains to Jack’s typewriter. The Shining Intro is a local and regional ADDY Award winner.

ADULT SWIM HISTORY
In design methods, we were tasked with creating an info graphic on a subject of our choice. It was originally made with the history of early cartoons but now I’ve remade the project to focus on my favorite animation channel, Adult Swim. I did research with some articles and videos and then compiled it into screens to be featured on the Adult Swim website. The final solution is a set of in-depth info graphics with stylish replications of the characters which still carry a likeness to the original Adult Swim properties.

TARGET CAMPAIGN
This was an ad campaign created with Target’s warm and inviting personality in mind. The idea was that users would submit what they were thankful for and potentially be featured in official Target advertising. The finished result is an ad campaign with various advertisements (magazine ads, posters, videos) that is cohesive with Target’s uplifting attributes. It fits the brand as the warm characteristics are complimented with the Thanksgiving tradition of declaring the things we are the most thankful for.

RETRO ALCOHOL PSA
This ad campaign for the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism uses satire and humor as a unique approach to an awareness project. The use of the vintage ads makes for a set of advertisements that is not only appealing and visually unique, but allows the audience to better understand that what they are reading is not a legitimate alcohol ad. The dark comedy in the campaign allows for some striking imagery that catches the viewer’s attention and demonstrates the severity that drinking can have when done in the wrong scenarios or when done excessively.

STORM RYDER
This is the current version of a passion project I’ve been working on ever since I started drawing. It tells the story of Storm, the electric bounty hunter, and her crew as they hunt bounties, deal with fish-based wars on mankind, and face cosmic horrors in the Great Open Sea. My idea was to create something that is a mix of Scott Pilgrim, Tank Girl, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. It’s far from finished and there’s much more that I want to do with it, but I’m very happy with the direction I’m taking and seeing how the comic and art have grown over the years.
