It may be summer, but here at Manhappenin’, we’re already excited for the semester. Being a part of this magazine has been an adventure so far – I’m sure many members could agree. We’ve become a stronger team, we’ve welcomed many new members, and we’ve worked our butts off on building this publicaiton from the ground up. I can’t express how proud I am of this team and how much we’ve grown. I’m excited to see what the future holds for Manhappenin’. I hope you all are excited for this upcoming year, because I know we are. For starters, we’ll finally be getting our own space for Manhappenin’ where we can create and work on the magazine together. Also, we’ll FINALLY be launching our very own online site. (Which we’re way too excited about, so get ready.) I know for many, K-State is a home away from home. We’re a family here, where everyone is welcome. There’s so many opportunities to go after and so many ways to make the most of your time in college. Be yourself, take a chance, and get excited – this is your time. I hope you enjoy this issue and the creativity we put into it. See you this semester, Wildcats! Best,

K-STATE FAMILY poem
written by: CHRISTINE LOGANBILL
When the fans are yelling, The Bill is full, and the team starts to sway and rock, Pan your gaze up to his hands, a leader holds a wooden block. If you can calm your adrenaline, for just one moment, long enough to see, Written there, in bold and all caps, it reads: FAMILY. The Wabash gets you moving, Wildcat Victory brings you to your feet. The Pride of Wildcat Land demands to sync to your heartbeat. High-fives all around, it’s a time for these strangers to blend. Just give it a few games, high-fives turn to hugs, and strangers to friends. Maybe the decision to come here was hard, or maybe you’ve known for years. Nevertheless, you’ve made the move, and I’m sure you’ll love it here. Now that your heart’s in Manhattan, you understand, you know. You comprehend that special feeling, and now there are things to throw. Throw the ripped-up newspaper, and cover Bramlage like snow. Throw your hands around your peers and support them wherever they go. Throw up your “WC” hand, and deck out in purple and white. Then throw your grad cap in the air, and watch your dreams take flight. You’re a Wildcat now, through and through, and that will never cease. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat. You’re officially a permanent beast. Consider your orientation packet your new adoption contract. You’re in the K-State Family now: a bond that can’t be cracked.

In the next year, you will have many opportunities to learn and grow, and we hope some of that learning and growth happens by getting involved with an organization on campus, and we hope you consider SGA. You can serve on a committee, learn for a year as an intern or assist the judicial branch on a student review board. As a student of this university, you are considered a member of SGA, and we hope you use that to your advantage. HOW TO DEAL WITH FEELING
HOMESICK a personal story about feeling homesick while being away at college. written by: HANNAH MARKEL and PALOMA ROMAN photographed by: HANNAH MARKEL 12 SUMMER 2017
“
I
’ve never been the homesick type. My family had moved several times while living in Kansas and right before I began my freshman year of high school, we moved to Rogers, Arkansas. So, when I decided to go to college at K-State where no one else in my graduating class was going, I thought it would be no big deal. I switched schools enough times that I thought it would be a breeze. I don’t often feel out of place or find myself feeling insecure and lonely, and I definitely love K-State. But a couple weeks into my freshman year of being a Wildcat, I found myself feeling all of those things. At first, I didn’t understand why. Why was I feeling the need for validation? Why did I feel alone even though I was surrounded by hundreds of new people all the time, in the midst of making new friends, joining a sorority, and meeting new people in class? It wasn’t until one night sitting in my dorm room that it dawned on me: regardless of the budding friendships I was making, there was no one around me whom I had history with. It had been a long time since I was in a place in my life where I wasn’t surrounded by a single person whom I could sit down with and be totally comfortable. The people who knew me far beyond the surface-level version of myself, the people who knew my history, who I had made years of memories with and who I knew loved me. These feelings didn’t last forever. As days and weeks went by, the relationships that were once so infantile began to become much more. It just took time. There’s no way to foster true, deep friendships without it. That was a lesson I learned. The more time I spent with new friends, investing in them and simultaneously allowing them the chance to invest in me, the more I realized that these people were going to be some of my lifelong friends. I know that sounds cheesy and cliché because it is a
cliché. But there’s truly a reason for that. College is this sort of limbo where you are all trying to figure out who you are and what you want to do with your life. Everyone here is equally as confused about life in one aspect or another because, let’s face it, we have no idea what we’re doing. This, however, creates the perfect environment for some of the most incredible and most important relationships in your life to find their beginning. Throughout college, and especially your freshman year, you’re going to run into roadblocks, you’re going to get a bad grade and you’re going to face emotional hardships of some kind. The people you meet here and the people you start living your life with are the ones who will be there to pick you up. They are going to be there to take you to get ice cream, or sit with you while you cry or maybe while you yell if that’s what makes you feel better. They’re going to be there to help you through it and push you along when you don’t want to keep going anymore. What I realized about being homesick is that it isn’t a bad thing. Feeling homesick just proves how deeply you love the people in your life and how important the place that got you where you are now is to you. It’s far too easy to fall into the trap of self-doubt when you move into a new place and a new phase of your life. Your freshman year of college is one that is riddled with change and growth, and it’s not always easy. But the longing for home and the uneasy feeling of being somewhere new shouldn’t be something that you fear or that you let become a deterrent of happiness. The feeling of being pushed outside your comfort zone is something that should be embraced! So, I urge you Wildcats to not let homesickness become something that drags you down, but a reminder of all the amazing people in your life who would be so proud of your pursuit of not only higher education, but also your dreams.
“WHAT I REALIZED ABOUT BEING HOMESICK IS THAT IT ISN’T A BAD THING. FEELING HOMESICK JUST PROVES HOW DEEPLY YOU LOVE THE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE AND HOW IMPORTANT THE PLACE THAT GOT YOU WHERE YOU ARE NOW IS TO YOU.”

TIPS FOR DEALING WITH HOMESICKNESS STAY BUSY ON CAMPUS
As a new student, you can find things to get involved in. To start off, go to the activities carnival hosted in the fall, and find different organizations/ clubs that you might be interested in.
STAY BUSY IN TOWN
Being in a new town gives you the opportunity to go exploring. Drive out to Pillsbury Crossing with friends. Visit all the traditional go to places that every K-State student has visited. Whether that be the Konza Prairie, Manhattan Hill, Top of the World, or Tuttle Creek.
FOOD
If you know you’re going to miss a certain food from home, try to stock some of that before leaving home. Think about how much you can actually store in a mini fridge. Check out new restaurants that you haven’t before. You might find comfort food in a place you don’t have back home.
CALL HOME
Skype. It is essential when you miss your pet back home. Your pet will miss you just as much as you miss them.
FIND A FRIEND GROUP
A lot of the times, making new friends is scary in college. If you join groups that you are passionate for, you might find people in that group who you might relate to.
STAY IN TOUCH WITH HOMETOWN FRIENDS
Although you have the opportunity to make new friends in college, much of the time your hometown friends and you will feel homesick in college in similar ways. Hanging out with them might give you a home feeling without having to travel home.
FIND A JOB
If you find a job you will be able to have extra spending money and get to meet people outside of campus or classes. If you find an on campus job you’ll usually have flexible hours and will probably work until 5 p.m. You might also be able to make connections with professional staff.
Not only is it important to call back home but if necessary, use FaceTime/

Get outside your
COMFORT ZONE written by: LAKEN HORTON photograhped by: MEG SHEARER
16 SUMMER 2017
WELCOME... to your freshman year, where one day you were asking permission to go to the bathroom and the next day you could stay out as late as you want with no one in your ear. With all this new found freedom it can be a little overwhelming. So here are a list of things that you can do in the first few weeks of classes to grow outside of your zone and start your first four plus years off right.
START THE GROUPME IN YOUR CLASS When you step into a new class everyone is nervous, even if you can’t tell. Being the one to start the Groupme in class draws people to you. Not to mention the benefits later on if you miss a class or just need help on homework assignments. This is the greatest way to connect and network with other students. The action itself shows initiative and readiness to take on the long semester to come.
EXPLORE DIFFERENT CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS Be a part of Black Student Union, Union Program Council, Salsa or Swing Dance Club, Student Government Association, Hispanic American Leadership Organization, or maybe even start writing for Manhappenin’, because why not?
TALK TO YOUR FLOORMATES If you don’t bond with anyone in your classes or your major, then the people you should connect with the most are the group of people you shower, sleep and eat with. Leave your door open you will have a couple of friends walk right in.
SIT WITH A RANDOM PERSON AT THE DINING CENTER When it’s busy and you have no one to sit with I’m sure there are plenty of people sitting on their own waiting for a cool person like you to start up some nice conversation over a good meal.
TALK TO THE PERSON NEXT TO YOU IN CLASS It’s the first day of classes and the person sitting next to you is looking for a friend just like you. You just found your study buddy and quite possibly your best friend.
HANG OUT WITH YOUR ROOMATES AND THEIR FRIENDS I found that meeting my roommate’s friends made classes a little easier because I always ran into one of them in lectures.
SWITCH IT UP Don’t be afraid to try something different. There’s nothing worse than getting stuck in a routine, so make sure you try different trends, foods, or hobbies and switch something up every day. MANHAPPENIN’ 17
STUDY ABROAD Traveling to another country is one of the greatest learning experiences. You are completely submerged in a new culture with great food, people, history, and depending on where you go architecture. You will not just be stepping out of your comfort zone, you will be jumping into an uncomfortable abyss but it will be worth it when you come home more open-minded and a love for the world.
INTERNATIONAL BUDDIES You have learned enough about the United States learn about other people and where they come from. The International Buddies Program pairs K-State students, staff, and community members with international students, scholars and family members. Once paired, Buddies meet regularly to learn about their partner’s cultures, customs, and explore Manhattan & K-State together.
BE ADVENTUROUS There is so much to do in Manhattan besides Aggieville. You can hike and bond with friends at the Konza, or drive out to Top of the World, a scenic overlook road off of Highway 113, on a nice clear night. Remember to get outside your comfort zone!

ADVICE
FROM
UPPERCLASSMEN about majors, careers and tips written by: LAKEN HORTON photograhped by: MEG SHEARER
APPAREL AND TEXTILES JALIYAH BROWN, Senior What should incoming freshman know about apparel and textiles?
They should know that it’s a lot of work, but it’s also fun work.
What mindset or skills should they have for apparel and textiles?
They should be creative and driven, willing to think and look outside the box.
Is there anything you wish you would’ve known before choosing this apparel and textiles?
I wish I would’ve known exactly what I wanted to do. There are so many options and I wish I would have been directed in one certain way. Any advice or tips on how to survive college?
Plan out your schedule, work ahead, do your projects before the last minute. Where is your peaceful place after a major project or test?
Home in my bed, watching Netflix.
Where are good places to intern? What should someone look for in an internship?
I interned at Bling on Ponytz. Internships that allow you to move all over and try different things are the best ones for this major. 20 SUMMER 2017
ENGINEERING CHASE TENEYCK, Senior What should incoming freshman know about engineering? (There is) a lot of math and physics; be prepared analytically. Civil engineering does a lot of surveying.
What mindset or skills should they have for engineering?
Analytical skills, mindset it will be hard it will be a challenge, be prepared. It’s not going to be easy, not like high school.
Is there anything you wish you would’ve known before choosing this engineering?
I didn’t have a good understanding of all the disciplines. In depth of what the specifics are in civil and other engineering categories.
Any advice or tips on how to survive?
Find a group of people to study with and utilize things on campus engineering and physics tutors and teachers and don’t do your homework the night before.
Where is your peaceful place after a major project or test?
Sitting at my desk, watching Netflix or playing a game, eating food. If it’s a nice day, (I take a) detour around campus.
BUSINESS CALEB FENN, Senior What should incoming freshman know about business? Be prepared to meet people. That’s all that business is and it’s really hard to not put yourself out there. Also math (because) business is just a bunch of numbers. Management is easy.
What mindset or skills should they have for business?
Willingness to work hard but that's all of college. Willing to step outside your comfort zone in a world that's changing.
Is there anything you wish you would’ve known before choosing Business as your major? How useless this degree is. General management is a very useless degree.
Any advice or tips on how to survive?
When you take FINAN 450, be ready to study early and often. Don't do it on a semester that is loaded. (It is) the hardest class you will have to take. Focus your whole semester around it. Ask people what professors they like because they know them and… if you want to walk away with something walk away with the right professors.
EDUCATION ALAINA THOMSEN, Sophomore What should incoming freshmen know about education? You have to love kids. You should know whether you want to pursue Elementary or Secondary education and what subject you would like to teach. It’s like a double major if you choose secondary education because you go to all of your basic classes like math and writing, but you also have to go to all your English classes since that is the subject you’ll be teaching.
What mindset or skills should they have for education?
You should be organized, have some writing skills to make lesson plans, public speaking since you will be in front of students every day, and able to take on leadership positions. You must also be creative and caring.
Is there anything you wish you would’ve known before choosing this major?
I think education is self-explanatory. I knew what I was doing going in and I love it. so, no.
Any advice or tips on how to survive the course load?
Manage your time, get a planner, and write down all of your assignments because it’s easy to forget when you have a project. Also, be kind to your teachers; they are more willing to forgive if you forget about an assignment or a project and will extend it a day.
MANHAPPENIN’ 21
AMERICAN ETHNIC STUDIES ALONSO PENA, Junior What should incoming freshman know about AMETH? Different than most majors. Its focused on community of color. Discussions on diversity. Talking about yourself in first person about the world. self-discovery
What mindset or skills should they have for AMETH?
Be open-minded and open heart. Learn about the world you never knew. Making connections. Experience to learning rather than job
Is there anything you wish you would’ve known before choosing Business as your major?
Job market the degree is very unlikely to match you career. Not as static they are flexible
Any advice or tips on how to survive?
Find your people. Give you life. Scuba diving metaphor. Find someone to talk to and conect with.
Where is your peaceful place after a major project or test? In my room with a book.
ARCHITECTURE DEZA MCKOY, Sophomore What should incoming freshman know about architecture? It’s a lot of work, a lot of studio time. If you want to be successful you want to spend as much time as possible in studio. Most students think that they will spend one hour in studio and do the rest of their work at home, but it does not work out.
What mindset or skills should they have for the major?Expose yourself to strong architecture. You want to
be able to think outside of the box and what you are used to. If you have only been exposed to your home and other houses and buildings like it, you will have a harder time being creative.
Is there anything you wish you would’ve known before choosing this major?
There’s more to architecture than just a building that looks good. There’s a ‘Why?’ to everything. Why they chose that material, why they built it to look like a triangle rather than a square.

MUST-SEE MANHATTAN written by: MOLLY BURT photograhped by: MEG SHEARER
SPOTS
Moving away to college can be terrifying, but exploring your new city and engaging in local culture just might turn an overwhelming experience into a thrill. Manhattan has a lot of attractions to visit. Travel time for each destination is added after the description, as estimated from halfway between the two main dorm complexes: Derby and Kramer (parking time not included). 24 SUMMER 2017
ENTERTAINMENT
HIKE Manhattan’s proximity to the Flint Hills and maintenance of natural land gives K-State students many options for outdoor recreation. The most popular destinations are...
KONZA PRAIRIE - To the south, K-State owns and operates a biological station in the Flint Hills that offers three trails to the public. The area is rich in plant life, wildlife and scenic views, but camping, swimming, dogs, horses, and bikes are not allowed. Travel time from dorms: 21 minutes by car TUTTLE CREEK LAKE - To the north, the state park boasts a handful of trails. It also allows dogs, ATVs and horses, and includes opportunities for boating, swimming, camping, shooting, fishing, disc golf and volleyball. Travel time from dorms: 14 minutes by car MANHATTAN HILL - It’s hard to miss the enormous letters spelling out the town’s name on a hill to the north. However, it takes climbing (or driving) to the top to find the entirely unique view and twisting, narrow trails that wind all the way to the bottom. Travel time from dorms: 6 minutes by car, 27 minutes by foot
Manhattan has all the usual attractions; two movie theaters, a bowling alley (right in the Union basement, no less), Sunset Zoo and even an ice-skating rink in City Park during the winter months. There are a few more unusual destinations as well, like...
K-STATE INSECT ZOO - Tucked away amidst the lively K-State gardens, the Insect Zoo is a quaint, peculiar attraction with an enormous collection of bugs and other small (or not so small) critters. Admission is a relatively low $3. Travel time from dorms: 1 minutes by car, 7 minutes by foot BEACH MUSEUM OF ART - The architecturally exceptional Beach Museum occupies the southeast corner of campus, just across the street from Aggieville. It hosts a variety of permanent and temporary art exhibits and many interactive events throughout the year. It is free and open to the public. Travel time from dorms: 6 minutes by car, 12 minutes by foot LOCKED MANHATTAN - Manhattan’s first escape room adventure is one of the priciest attractions in town, with tickets starting at $21 per person, but it offers a thrilling and engaging experience unparalleled by other attractions. Participants have an hour to follow clues and solve a series of puzzles to escape a locked room within an immersive storyline. Travel time from dorms: 9 minutes by car, 39 minutes by foot
EAT OUT Manhattan features many bars, buffets, coffee shops and fast food joints, but a few are musts for new students to try such as...
BREAKFAST AT VARSITY DONUTS - Varsity Truck has plenty of late-night snack options as well, but nothing kicks the day off quite like the quirky charm of the Varsity donut shop in the morning. THINGS I WISH I KNEW AS A FRESHMAN
Every student remembers orientation day and how overwhelming it can be. We were nervous just like you, so here are some things that many upperclassmen wished they would’ve known as an incoming freshman.
written by: LAKEN HORTON photograhped by: HANNAH MARKEL
1. When your parents said, “You can be anything you want to be,” they were humoring you. You need to start narrowing down career ideas so you have a specific path to aim towards.
2. The first semester will be the hardest as you grow accustomed to your workload. Make sure to use a calendar; it helps.
3. Building a relationship with your professor makes classes easier. They know your name and that you’re willing to work hard.
4. You don’t have to walk back to the dorms at night by yourself because Wildcat Walk is here to help. If you go to any of the blue light poles on campus or call 785.395.7233, they will meet you and walk you to your destination.
26 SUMMER 2017
5. It’s okay if your passions change! You outgrow a lot of things when you get to college so don’t feel obligated to stay the same.
6. There are workout spaces in the bottom of some of your dorms so you don’t have to drive all the way to the rec.
7. Don’t be afraid to put the books away once in a while and have some down time. Remember to take time for you because it’s important.
8. Embrace your dining hall and all-you-can-eat because when you move out, the fridge will be as empty as your tummy.
9. Hydrate to dominate. Water is FREE and you need lots of it! 10. It’s okay to be sick. Email your professor and let them know you’ll miss a day or two, they’ll usually understand.
11. Honestly, it’s okay to fail. You learn more from your failures than your successes. Also, when I say fail, I mean making mistakes and learning from them – not failing your classes!
12. K-STATE IS A FAMILY! Upperclassmen can be considered your older siblings. They love to advise and guide you in the right direction for success. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

DORM ROOM ESSENTIALS PACKING FOR COLLEGE CAN BE CRAZY OVERWHELMING. FROM CLOTHES TO DECOR, WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED WITH THIS LIST. written by: MOLLY BURT photographed by: MEG SHEARER
It can be difficult to decide what to bring to college, especially without having seen the room you’ll be staying in for the next nine months. Every building’s rooms are a little bit different. However, it’s always helpful to have some general guidelines when it comes to packing for your first year at K-State. According to both male and female students, here are the definite esentials.
34 SUMMER 2017
HEALTH AND HYGIENE Aside from the obvious basic hygiene supplies, like a toothbrush and deodorant (make sure you always have backups too), there are a few things you should definitely make room for. • Shower shoes • Shower caddy • Q-tips • First-Aid kit • Towels/washcloths
• Aspirin • Razors • Tweezers • Nail clippers
CLOTHES
Overpacking your closet is an inevitable mistake, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Here are a few guidelines that can help you plan. • T-shirts (but not too many since you’ll get plenty more while here!)
• Both winter and summer clothes • A heavy coat and rain coat
• Fancy schmancy attire • Athletic attire • Comfy shoes
SUPPLIES Let’s not forget that to pack for the most important facet of college: classes. You’ll probably want these supplies to keep on hand in your dorm room. • Highlighters • Scissors • Tape • Sticky notes/tabs
• Extra pens/pencils • Folders • Printer paper and ink (if you have one)
• Planner • Desk organizer • Notecards
FURNITURE/APPLIANCES Be sure to collaborate with your roommate before investing, because they may already have something they’re willing to share. Here are a few luxuries college students often bring. • TV • Printer • Collapsible/beanbag chairs • Desk lamp • Microwave • Minifridge
• Laptop • Ethernet cable • Power strip • Headphones • Chargers • Hard drive • Clothes hangers
• Laundry basket • Comforter, blankets • Pillows • Bed padding • Shoe hanger • Storage bin
MANHAPPENIN’ 35
DECOR When it comes to dorm rooms, a colorful comforter or photos for your billboard can make all the difference in the world. Pinterest has plenty more on the subject, but here are a few other simple, cheap ideas for livening up your new room. • Posters • Photos • Plants • Christmas lights • Flags • Calendars • Curtains (don’t forget the rod)
• Cards from home • Whiteboard • Artwork • Desk accessories • Command Strips (to hang it all)
