2013-14 SEASON OUTLOOK Parahus, a local product from Congers, N.Y., is a dangerous three-point threat who’s capable of playing anywhere on the floor. Olenowski has also brought in junior transfer Jacqui Thompson, who was Wagner’s starting point guard for each of the past two seasons. She will gain valuable experience in the Jaspers’ system this year before becoming eligible to play in 2014-15.
FRONTCOURT In the frontcourt, the Jaspers are led by sophomore Shayna Ericksen and junior Ashley Stec. Ericksen, a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection a year ago, started 26 games as a freshman and tallied 6.0 rebounds per contest, the most of any returning player on the roster. Stec played 24.3 minutes a night and contributed 5.6 points per game last season. She has good offensive range and is a strong defender, as well. “Shayna has been running the floor great,” Olenowski said. “She can score in transition and has some good post moves. Ashley
Monica Roeder Despite a disappointing 8-23 record, fifth-year Head Coach John Olenowski was encouraged by what he saw from the Manhattan College women’s basketball team in 2012-13. He was especially pleased with the way the Jaspers played down the stretch. Manhattan won two of its final three games and gave eventual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champion Marist its biggest challenge during the conference tournament. Hoping to use that finish as a springboard, eight players return from that squad eager to prove that last season was an anomaly. Six newcomers also join the fold, as Manhattan looks to reach the postseason for the third time in four years. “I think there’s some extra motivation,” Olenowski said. “We were all disappointed with the season last year. All of us are determined to not have that type season and have one more like we had the previous three years. Everyone’s working extra hard to make sure that happens.”
BACKCOURT Senior captains Allison Skrec and Monica Roeder anchor the Manhattan backcourt. Skrec led the MAAC in assists last season, while Roeder was a second team allconference performer. The Jaspers’ top returning scorer and one of 20 players in program history with 1,000 career points, she was named to the Preseason All-MAAC
Second Team. “Our senior leadership is the big key,” Olenowski said. “Both Monica and Allison have been tremendous captains. They will lead by example, and I think the rest of the team will follow their lead and step up to fill all the necessary roles to become a great basketball team.” Joining them in the backcourt is junior Nicole Isaacs. Already one of the top long range shooters in the conference, she has developed a solid all-around game that should make her an even bigger offensive threat. Sophomores Katie Reese and Blake Underhill will serve as Skrec’s backups at the point. Reese improved as the season went on in 2012-13, and she contributed some clutch baskets down the stretch in the Jaspers’ 50-49 win over Loyola in the first round of the MAAC Tournament. Underhill, who appeared in 15 games last season, is very athletic and a good rebounder. She will likely see increased time in 2013-14. In addition, three talented freshmen will compete for playing time right away. Nicole Anderson led Hill Regional Career High School in Hamden, Conn., to backto-back state championships and was the MVP of the 2011 Class LL Connecticut State Championship Game. Alex Cohen, meanwhile, is a former Gatorade New Hampshire Player of the Year nominee at The Tilton School in Nashua, N.H. Maeve

2013-14 SEASON OUTLOOK
Nicole Isaacs has vastly improved her inside game and rebounding. She’s also done a really nice job stepping up and defending post players.” After being sidelined by injuries for much of last year, sophomore Kylla Champagne is healthy and ready to make a big contribution. She should help make up for the loss of last year’s leading rebounder, Toni-Ann Lawrence, who graduated as Manhattan’s all-time leader in games played. “We’re finally getting back Kylla,” Olenowski said. “She’s a great athlete who’s a strong defender and a very good rebounder. She’s starting to finish inside nicely as well, which is a big plus.” Further increasing Manhattan’s presence in the post are freshmen Kayla Grimme and Mikki Guiton. Grimme averaged nearly a double-double while leading Altoona Area High School in Pennsylvania to its third straight district championship game last season. She was a third team all-state performer in 2011-12. Another Pennsylvania product, Guiton tallied 15.1 points per game last year at Perkiomen Valley High School.
Jaspers prepare for the rigors of MAAC play. The Jaspers will be tested right away, as they host an exhibition game for the first time in Olenowski’s tenure on Nov. 2. Manhattan will take on Saint Mary’s University of Halifax, Nova Scotia, which finished 18-2 and won the bronze medal in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championship tournament last season. Manhattan opens the regular season with three straight road games, starting with a contest at Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 10. The Jaspers also visit Towson (Nov. 16) and Army (Nov. 20) before beginning their home slate against La Salle on Nov. 24. Manhattan’s non-conference slate also features matchups at mid-major powers Oakland (Dec. 6) and VCU (Dec. 18), as well as the annual “Battle of the Bronx” against local rival Fordham at Draddy Gymnasium on Dec. 21. “The non-conference schedule is a tough one,” Olenowski said. “We’ve got some good local opponents like Army and Fordham, and we also have some really strong out-of-area teams such as Oakland, VCU and Towson. Those are all very good teams from quality conferences. Each of these games will help us prepare for conference play, which is always the goal.” MAAC play gets underway on Dec. 29, when Canisius comes to Riverdale. Four of Manhattan’s first five MAAC tilts are at Draddy Gymnasium, including the annual “Kid’s Day Out” matchup against Fairfield
on Jan. 9. The Jaspers’ contest at Siena on Jan. 30 will be broadcast nationally on ESPN3, while Manhattan’s annual “Play 4 Kay” game for breast cancer awareness is scheduled for Feb. 8 against Saint Peter’s. Eight-time defending MAAC champion Marist has won 70 of its last 72 games against conference foes, with the only two losses in that span coming at Draddy Gymnasium. This year’s home game against the Red Foxes takes place on Feb. 23. MAAC newcomer Quinnipiac also reached the NCAA Tournament last season as champions of the Northeast Conference. Manhattan ends the regular season by hosting the Bobcats on March 2. “It’s always good to have quality teams in your conference,” Olenowski said. “It creates good competition for all of us. We all have to step up our game and be ready to compete with the top teams. All of us, especially here at Manhattan, want to be in the upper echelon. That’s our goal.” The MAAC Tournament will also have a new format this season. The top five teams in the conference will receive a bye into the quarterfinals, while the remaining six programs will play in the first round. The biggest change, though, is that the quarterfinal winners will now have a day off before the semifinals and finals on Sunday and Monday, March 9-10. Once again, the MAAC Championship Game will be nationally televised on ESPNU, with the winner receiving the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
SCHEDULE With the addition of Monmouth and Quinnipiac to the league, the MAAC schedule has increased from 18 to 20 games this season. As a result, Manhattan will play just nine non-conference contests before beginning MAAC play on Dec. 29. Nevertheless, Olenowski has put together a challenging slate that should help the

JOHN OLENOWSKI
Head Coach (St. Leo ’78) 5th Season at Manhattan (65-64)/8th Overall (135-92) John Olenowski was named the seventh head coach in program history on April 15, 2009. In just four seasons, the 20-year coaching veteran has already left his mark. Olenowski led the Jaspers to consecutive appearances in the semifinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) in 2011 and 2012, and his 2010-11 team set a school record with 24 wins. Olenowski has compiled a 65-64 record during his time at Manhattan. He earned his 100th career victory at Niagara on Jan. 30, 2011 and has an overall record of 135-92 as a collegiate head coach. In his first season at the helm, Olenowski led the Jaspers to a 15-15 record, including a 10-8 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). His 15 wins were the second-most by a first-year head coach in program history, and he became just the second head coach in program history to notch a winning percentage of .500 or better in his debut season at Manhattan (ranking behind Manhattan College Hall of Famer Kathy Solano, the program’s all-time winningest coach, in each category). Under Olenowski’s tutelage, Michelle Pacheco earned First Team All-MAAC honors and Lindsey Loutsenhizer was selected to the All-MAAC Second Team. In addition, he led the Jaspers to a 65-62 victory over four-time defending MAAC champion Marist in the regular season finale, ending Manhattan’s 14-game losing streak against the Red Foxes. The Jaspers built upon that success in Olenowski’s second season, posting a 24-10 record and qualifying for the postseason for the first time in eight years. After finishing third in the MAAC with a 13-5 conference record, Manhattan was one of 16 teams selected to participate in the WBI. In the first round, Manahttan picked up its first postseason victory since 1983 (and first-ever in a national postseason event) with a 52-48 triumph over Sacred Heart at Draddy Gymnasium. The Jaspers then topped Wright State, 75-73, in the quarterfinals, marking the first time that Manhattan won two games in a single postseason, before falling to eventual WBI champion UAB in the semifinals. Olenowski’s Jaspers boasted one of the stingiest defenses in the nation in 201011. Manhattan finished third in the nation in scoring defense, allowing a mere 50.9 points per game, and held its opponent under 50 points 19 times. The Jaspers held Canisius to 30 points on Jan. 28, 2011, the fewest points scored by a Manhattan opponent since the 1991-92 season. METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010. Butler University was also added in the summer of 2012, giving the MAAC seven teams competing in women’s golf. For the first time in league history, an associate member was added in men’s swimming & diving when Bryant University joined the league in the summer of 2012. In April of 2013 the MAAC added Field Hockey as a sponsored sport with competition beginning in the fall of the 2013-14 academic year between four member institutions – Monmouth University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University and Siena College. In June of 2013 the MAAC added three associate members to the Field Hockey league - Bryant University, Robert Morris University, and Sacred Heart University giving the MAAC seven teams, while Fairfield University will join the league starting in the 2015-16 academic year.
With 11 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 33rd year of competition during the 2013-2014 academic year.
The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun. Current Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Manhattan College, Marist College, Monmouth University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s University, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University, VMI and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Jacksonville University, Robert Morris University, Sacred Heart University, and Stetson University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 25 sports and championships during the 2013-2014 academic year. The MAAC has automatic qualification to 16 NCAA Championships, with the addition of Field Hockey in the fall of 2013. The MAAC Basketball Championships returns to Springfield’s MassMutual Center in 2014 for the final year of a three stint, which will be co-hosted by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC and Fairfield hosted the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regional at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT. The MAAC and Rider hosted the 2012 NCAA Rowing Championships at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, New Jersey and also co-hosted the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University will work together for the fourth time to co-host the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball second and third rounds at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, NY.
ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS
The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the Barclays Center, the MassMutual Center, the IZOD Center, First Niagara Center, Times Union Center, the Webster Bank Arena, and the Sun National Bank Center. This year, the MAAC will take the women’s soccer championship to Orlando, Florida at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The 2014 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Palm Golf Course. In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have played in a total of 80 NIT games and 79 NCAA games. In 2013, the MAAC had a record 6 men basketball programs participate in postseason play- Iona (NCAA Championship), Niagara (NIT), Canisius, Fairfield, Loyola, and Rider (CIT). Canisius and Loyola both advanced to the Quarterfinal round, while Rider reached the second round. In 2012, the MAAC had two teams advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship for the first time in 16 years, with Loyola earning the league’s automatic bid and Iona garnering an at-large bid. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. The Red Foxes have recorded five NCAA wins since their runs in 2007. The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc., now NeuLion, Inc., to design and host the MAAC web page. MAACSports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, live and on-demand video and an online merchandise store. The MAAC, in conjunction with NeuLion, launched an iPhone app in February 2011, followed by Android and iPad apps that were released during the 2011-12 academic year. In September 2011, the conference announced the launch of MAAC.TV, the league’s first broadband network. Eight schools - Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Monmouth, Rider, and Saint Peter’s - are currently part of the network, which broadcast over 400 live events in 2012-13. The MAAC President for the 2013-2014 academic year is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s University. The Vice-President is John J. Hurley, the President of Canisius College. John D’Argenio, Director of Athletics at Siena College, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Allison Sexton, Senior Woman Administrator at Fairfield University University will serve as Vice Chair.
MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTS
In June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for studentathletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools - Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena - and three associate members - Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena. In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is currently made up of three MAAC schools - Iona, Marist and Siena - as well as four associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova, VMI and Wagner. Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC Championship, while Robert Morris began competition in the spring of 2011. In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members - Albany, Boston University and Hartford - to women’s golf, with the programs starting
