2010 season outlook Behind the leadership of 2009 MAAC Coach of the Year Kevin Leighton the Manhattan baseball team is expected to make another strong run at the conference title. In four short years Leighton has lifted the storied Jaspers baseball program to unprecedented heights. Manhattan is riding high on its 2010 ball club which returns seven All-MAAC selections who helped earn the program’s second consecutive MAAC Regular-Season Championship and set a school record with 35 wins. "I think that this team’s talent is as deep as we have had in my five years here,” Leighton emphasized. “ We have a lot of key returners who we are expecting to have big seasons, along with some talented young guys." Already tabbed the team to beat according to the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the Jaspers enter the campaign with two of the top seniors in the conference, both of whom are expected to bring leadership to the diamond. Kevin Nieto, the 2010 Preseason MAAC Player of the Year, will again anchor one of the premier outfields in the league. Nieto was a key figure in the 2009 Jaspers highoctane offense, which was one of the best in NCAA Division I and rewrote the MAAC’s record book. Reigning MAAC Pitcher of the Year Mike Gazzola will help lead the Jasper staff which features a talented mix of both veteran and young arms. Manhattan returns seven starters from last year’s team which posted an 18-6 conference record. The Jaspers welcome 12 newcomers to the roster.

Infield Corners The Jaspers bring back a plethora of power to go along with solid defensive skills at both corners in juniors Chad Salem and Austin Sheffield. "Chad and Austin have played since their freshman years and I expect them to lead our infield,” explained Leighton. “ I feel that both will have good seasons for us and be key parts of our success." Salem returns to the hot corner after enjoying another solid campaign in which he earned All-MAAC Second Team honors for the second straight season. The power hitting

third baseman logged a .380 batting average and drove in 45 RBI in 52 starts last season. A local product from Rye, N.Y., Salem blasted eight home runs and 13 doubles. One of the most consistent offensive players on the roster, Salem logged the fifth best onbase percentage (.471) and recorded 25 multi-hit games in 2009. Salem is a multi-purpose player who can be used in several roles in the infield. Sheffield, a 6’4” 208 lb. product of Augusta, Ga., will return to his

Kevin Nieto starting role at first base. Sheffield is coming off a career-season, which culminated being named to the AllMAAC Second Team. The iron man started all 53 of Manhattan’s games at first base hitting .349 on the year and improved his average in MAAC games going .382 from the plate. One of the Jaspers most consistent defenders, Sheffield posted a team-high .987 fielding percentage. He displayed his ability to come through in the clutch when he launched his seventh home run of the season to help the Jaspers earn a 2-1 MAAC Tournament victory over Rider. Sheffield completed his stellar sophomore campaign with 13 doubles, two triples and 47 RBI. He had 24 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI contests.

Middle Infield It may be the only loss the Jaspers have to deal with, but certainly the biggest as Manhattan looks to replace shortstop Ryan Masters and second baseman Ruben Perez, both of whom graduated as members of the winningest class in program history. The duo contributed to 135 victories over their careers and a 75-25 MAAC record. Manhattan will look to its freshmen Kyle Murphy, Nick Camastro and Brian Simmons, along with second year player Will DeRuve to fill the gaps. "Our middle infield is very young, but I am confident that they will do well,” said Leighton. “They will make rookie mistakes, but I believe they will develop quickly.” DeRuve is the most experienced middle infielder who spent most of his time playing second base last season. The sophomore from Delmar, N.Y. started 27 of 37 games last year adding a good lefty bat to the line up. DeRuve recorded 20 RBI and scored 23 runs. Murphy will also challenge for a spot at second base. The 6’3” 200 lb infielder from Waterbury, Conn. is a tough competitor who has excellent speed to go along with a solid right handed bat. A four year starter at Holy Cross High School, Murphy was named All-State as a senior after batting .478 with 26 RBI and three home runs as he helped the Crusaders to an 18-5 record. Camastro will see time at shortstop this season. The product of Lagrangeville, N.Y. was a three year starter at Arlington High School and helped the Admirals to two league championships and advanced to the Section I Finals in 2009. An AllNew York State selection as a senior, Camastro is a solid option in the middle infield as he has good speed and a strong arm. Simmons offers a defensive presence to the Jaspers infield and can be used in special situations. The native of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. was named AllSection I League II North as a senior at Lakeland High School after batting .379, with 14 runs and 10 RBI. Freshman Julian De La Rosa will add depth to the infield as the multipurpose prospect who can earn time at either second or third base. The product from Staten Island played three years at Bishop Ford High School in Brooklyn hitting above .370 in

each of his years. De La Rosa played his final season at the Lawrenceville School helping the team to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJISAA) Division A State Championship, and was named to the NJISAA Second Team All-Prep.

Outfield

Manhattan’s outfield is arguably the class of the conference. The unit features three All-MAAC performers in senior Kevin Nieto, along with juniors Mike McCann and Mark Onorati. The Jaspers’ outfield is expected to provide much of the offensive firepower, along with defensive stability. "In my opinion our outfield is the best in the MAAC, and possibly the best in the region,” admitted Leighton. “The starters all have speed, and they all can hit. Kevin, Mark and Mike will likely hit 1-2-3 in our order, and they will be the engine of our offense." Nieto has received preseason hype as a top player in the nation after being named to the All-MAAC First Team in 2009 for the second straight season. It marked his third straight year as an All-Conference performer. Nieto is one of 30 finalists in the NCAA for the prestigious 2010 Lowe’s Baseball Senior CLASS Award, which honors a graduating senior for notable achievements in four areas - classroom, character, community and competition. The Miami native who has great speed and can hit for power and average, led all of Division I logging a 1.57 runs

per game and set a MAAC record with 72 runs last season. Nieto finished in the top-5 of the MAAC for slugging percentage (.754), batting average (.396), stolen bases (25), home runs (13), triples (6) and on-base percentage (.480) in 46 appearances. He was selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) AllAmerica Third Team for his dominant performance on the diamond. McCann is coming off a break out sophomore campaign where he set the program’s single season hits record notching 85. The speedy right fielder from Belle Harbor, N.Y. was a 2009 All-MAAC First Team selection and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northeast Region First Team honoree after batting .388, scoring 65 runs, launching 13 home runs and posting 59 RBI starting all 53 of the Jaspers’ contests. An extremely consistent hitter, he brings power to the batting order. McCann is a Preseason All-MAAC Selection. Onorati returns to left field where he has found his niche starting all 103 appearances during his career. The junior from Williston Park, N.Y. provides the Jaspers with good speed on the base path and can also hit for power. Onorati has a knack for scoring runs and touching lots of bases as he has finished in the top-5 of the MAAC in his first two seasons in these categories. The 2009 All-MAAC Second Team selection is a career .345 hitter and has driven in 85 RBI in his two short years in Riverdale. Onorati covers a lot of ground defensively and holds a .975 career fielding percentage. Freshmen Anthony Vega and Joe Rock will provide a solid foundation in the outfield for years to come. The two are coming off decorated high school careers and will compete for time this season. Vega is a 6’0” 190 lb product from Patchogue-Medford in Long Island. A speedy player who brings a lefty bat to the line up, hit .348, posted a .488 on-base percentage and stole 12 bases as a high school senior. Rock also has the potential to develop into a top outfielder for the Jaspers. The local product from Carmel, N.Y. has good speed, has shown he can hit for power and has a strong arm. Rock joins the Jaspers from a very successful high school career at Kennedy Catholic where he helped the program to a 49-5 overall record and a New York State Class B Championship (2008) in his last two seasons. He hit a whopping .408 and blasted five home runs as a senior.

Freshmen Eddie Spitaletta, Giancarlo Santillo and Alvin Mata will add depth to the outfield. Spitaletta, a 6’0” 180 lb, product from Hackensack, N.J., was a two-time All-Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League (NNJIL) honoree at Paramus Catholic. Santillo who played locally at Holy Cross High School in Queens adds good speed to the outfield. Mata is a sophomore from Tuckahoe, N.Y. who played at George Washington High School. He is quick with some power and lots of raw talent.

Catchers

Manhattan will rely on red-shirt freshman Ramon Ortega to handle the majority of responsibility behind the plate this season. Ortega saw limited time in 2009 after suffering a seasonending injury just six games into the season. Senior Anthony Armenio can provide assistance at the catcher position, but will see most of his time as the Jaspers’ designated hitter. “Ray is a solid defensive catcher who can switch hit,” Leighton noted. “Anthony has worked hard in the off season and has shown much improvement defensively.” Ortega, who is from Miami, has a good defensive skill set and a strong arm. He appeared in six of the Jaspers’ first eight games of 2009, including five starts, before going down. During his brief stint, Ortega hit .333 and recorded a .412 on-base percentage. A product from Christopher Columbus High School, Ortega was a three-time All-Dade County selection. Armenio, a power hitter from Dix Hills, N.Y., is coming off a career year being named to the All-MAAC First Team. He helped shatter several single season program records, which included an all-time best 61 home runs. Armenio blasted nine of those out of the ball park. The explosive lefty led the conference with 22 doubles and was fifth in the MAAC with a team-high 61 RBI. In 2009, Armenio hit .308, posted a .433 on-base percentage and scored 49 runs.

Pitchers

Manhattan returns one of the most experienced pitching cores in the MAAC, which is anchored by seniors Mike Gazzola, Tom Costigan and Tom Moran. “I think the seniors will step up for

us,” said Leighton. “Mike and Tom [Costigan] will likely be our #1 and #2 weekend starters. I think our bullpen is much stronger too. Our newcomers give us a few more options to work with in relief.” Gazzola, a fifth year player from White Plains, N.Y., became just the third Jasper all-time to earn MAAC Pitcher of the Year honors in 2009. The crafty left-hander posted a 7-1 overall record, including four complete games, which complement a team-best 4.15 ERA. He elevated his performances in MAAC contests going a perfect 5-0 with a 3.75 ERA. Stepping up for the big show, Gazzola pitched a complete game en route to a 2-1 victory over Rider in the MAAC Tournament. Gazzola is expected to lead the Jaspers’ weekend rotation again in 2010. Costigan is a hard throwing righthander who will see the majority of his time in the starting rotation. The product of Cold Spring, N.Y. is coming off a season where he found success both as a starter and out of the bullpen. Costigan’s seven wins and 73 strikeouts ranked third in the league last season. He logged a .284 batting average against and allowed just 48 earned runs over 80 innings. Costigan is a crafty pitcher with a good mix of pitches as displayed by his 29 strikeouts looking, which ranked second in the league last year. Costigan went 5-1 and tallied a 4.10 ERA in MAAC contests. He was tabbed as one of the conference’s top prospects in 2010 by Baseball America. The Jaspers will look to Moran as the primary closer. One of the program’s top relievers all-time, Moran is expected to break Manhattan’s career saves record currently standing just one save behind former standout Pat Widgren ’00. In 2009, the native of Farmington, Conn. appeared 24 times, posted a 5-2 record and was second in the MAAC with six saves. A deceptive sidewinder, Moran bounces back on short rest and will eat up several innings out of the bullpen. He led all Jasper relievers with 45 innings of work last season. Sophomores Mike Giordano and Matt Jordan will compete again for a position in the Jaspers weekend rotation. Giordano made a splash to start his collegiate career last season winning his first six career starts. A Bedford, N.Y. native, Giordano ranked second on the team with a 4.43 ERA and struck out 32 batters in 61.0 innings of action. Jordan split the 2009 season

between the starting rotation and coming out of the bullpen. A hardnosed southpaw, Jordan recorded four wins, 47 strikeouts and one save in 55.0 innings of work. He was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on May 16 after striking out six batters and allowing just one earned run in a win at Iona. Senior fireballer Zac Goyer gives the Jaspers another option either out of the bullpen or as a starter. Goyer struck out 41 batters in 40.0 innings, while posting four non-conference wins. He led the team last season with a .226 batting average against. A power strikeout pitcher, Goyer notched a career-high 11 Ks in a victory over BYU. Manhattan will have sophomores Matt Troisi, Taylor Sewitt and junior Rob Ardino coming out of the bullpen. Troisi is a lefty from Brooklyn who found most of his success last season in four relief appearances over a 10 day span in March where he did not allow an earned run. Sewitt made 10 appearances in 2009 serving the Jaspers as a utility infielder and out of the bullpen. He adds depth to Manhattan in both these areas. Ardino appeared in eight games as a freshman and notched six strikeouts over 11.2 innings. Freshmen Eric Luksis, Mike Gonzalez and John Soldinger will compete for time on the mound. Luksis is a lefty from Wappingers Falls, N.Y. who can have an immediate impact. A deceptive pitcher with good velocity and control, Luksis has the potential to service Manhattan in a starting role. The All-County selection at John Jay East Fishkill, Luksis has the ability to dominate a game as he did when he tossed a no hitter versus Carmel on April 17, 2009. Gonzalez has the potential to contribute out of the bullpen this year. A right-hander from Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, which has produced several Jasper standouts in the past, Gonzalez complements a good fast ball with good out pitches. Soldinger is a 6’3” 205 pitcher who is also expected to be used as a reliever this season. He is a two-time All-Long Island selection locally at Bay Shore High School. Soldinger can locate his fastball and has an above average breaking ball. He will compete for innings.

Schedule

The 2010 slate features contests with powers from the ACC, BIG EAST, Conference USA and Colonial Athletic Association, in addition to the always challenging MAAC lineup. The Jaspers open the season Feb. 26-28 at the University of Miami, a 2009 NCAA Tournament participant. "We are excited about our schedule," explained Leighton. "The first four weeks of the season will certainly be the most challenging that we have had in my time with the program." The Jaspers travel south to begin the campaign with a three game series against the Hurricanes marking the first time the programs have met since the 2006 NCAA Regional Finals. Manhattan returns to the Bronx for its annual meeting at cross-town rival Fordham (March 3), before traveling to Delaware (March 5-7). "Miami is going to be tough. It is never an easy weekend when you play a perennial power in their home park. We expect this experience will prepare us for the other challenging games on the schedule." Manhattan visits Morgantown, W. Va. to square off with West Virginia from March 12-14. The Mountaineers went 37-18 last year and finished third in the BIG EAST. The Jaspers will also make non-conference stops at Long Island (March 9), Seton Hall (March 17), Liberty (March 19-21), and Hofstra (March 24), before opening the MAAC schedule at Marist (March 27-28). The Jaspers will also visit nonconference opponents Fairleigh Dickinson (March 30), Sacred Heart (April 13), Alabama Birmingham (April 24-25) and Albany (April 28). Manhattan plays ball at Van Cortlandt Park for the first time on April 3-4 when the Jaspers host league member Saint Peter's. Albany (April 7), Columbia (April 21) and NYIT (May 4) will also come to Riverdale this season. The Jaspers conference home games resume May 1-2 versus Niagara. Manhattan travels to Canisius (May 8-9) for a weekend series, before returning to Riverdale for consecutive MAAC series with Iona (May 15-16) and Siena (May 20-21). The 2010 MAAC Championships will return to Fishkill, N.Y. at Dutchess Stadium from May 27-30, the site of the Jaspers last MAAC Championship.

Kevin Leighton, the 2009 MAAC Coach of the Year, enters his fifth season at the helm of the Manhattan College baseball program. Since his appointment, Leighton has guided the Jaspers to four consecutive 30-win seasons, the program’s first MAAC Championship, two MAAC Regular-Season titles, and most notably he put Manhattan in the national spotlight advancing to the NCAA Regional Final in 2006. Leighton was named the 24th head coach in team history on August 18, 2005 after serving four years as the Jaspers’ assistant coach. He is the third winningest coach in the program’s 141 years in existence. Leighton was the quickest Jaspers head coach to tally his 100th-career victory, in just three seasons, and also ranks among the youngest Division I coaches to reach the 100-win plateau. Leighton has mentored 38 All-MAAC recipients since joining the program in 2002, including 26 First Team selections. During his tenure, three Jaspers were named MAAC Pitcher of the Year, two earned MAAC Rookie of the Year honors and one was selected MAAC Player of the Year. Additionally, two Jaspers received All-America honors and seven were named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans. Eleven players Leighton has coached have advanced to the professional ranks, and four currently play within a MLB organization. Under Leighton’s leadership, success has also extended into the classroom as 46 Jaspers have earned MAAC All-Academic status. In 2008 Manhattan was honored with an NCAA Public Recognition Award for ranking in the top-10 percent of all Division I baseball programs in the multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) report. The Jaspers are coming off backto-back MAAC Regular-Season Championships. Last season, Manhattan tied a program record notching 35 wins with one of the most powerful offenses in MAAC history. The 2009 Jaspers finished fifth in NCAA Division I and set the conference’s single season

record with a .349 team batting average. Manhattan also set MAAC records with 657 hits and 130 doubles in a season. Leighton guided the 2008 Jaspers to the program’s first MAAC Regular-Season title since joining the league in 1982. In 2007, the Jaspers set a school record with 35 wins, and advanced to the MAAC Championship game for the third time in the previous four seasons. The team also tallied a programbest 21 MAAC wins, including a 19-0 start to the conference season. Manhattan compiled 16 game overall and 15 game road win streaks, both of which were tops in Division I at the time. During Leighton’s first year, he led the Jaspers to their first MAAC Tournament Championship and to the 2006 NCAA Regional Finals. Manhattan posted 34 victories, including three wins over nationally ranked opponents, most notably, #6 Nebraska in the NCAA Regional. Leighton was recognized that year as the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northeast Region Coach of the Year. Leighton arrived in Riverdale after a standout four-year career at Seton Hall University. He helped the Pirates to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances in 2000 and 2001. In 2001, he helped guide the Pirates to the Big East Championship, the program’s first title since 1987. Leighton earned his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Seton Hall in 2001. He completed his master’s degree in administration and leadership in education at Manhattan in 2005. The Brewster, N.Y. native was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1997. Leighton resides in Somers, N.Y. with his wife Katie and daughter Taylor.

Ryan Darcy ’03 is in his fifth season as an assistant on the Manhattan baseball coaching staff. Darcy works primarily with the pitching staff, but assists in all aspects of the program, including recruiting. During his tenure, Manhattan pitchers have received numerous accolades and have developed into some of the top pitchers in the MAAC. Darcy has mentored three MAAC Pitchers of the Year in the last four seasons, and three Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America pitchers. The 2009 Jaspers pitching staff finished the season ranked in the top-3 of the conference in strike outs, ERA, opposing batting average, hits and runs allowed. Manhattan had two pitchers finish third in the league with seven wins, including the 2009 MAAC Pitcher of the Year (Mike Gazzola). Behind Darcy’s leadership in 2008, the staff finished second in the conference for strikeouts and third in ERA. The Jaspers’ staff led the league with a 3.40 earned run average and .249 opposing batting average in MAAC contests. For the second straight year a Manhattan pitcher earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors (Dan Forman).

In 2007, the Jasper staff was among the best in the nation, posting a MAAC best, NCAA 33rd-rated, and school record 3.85 ERA, and included the MAAC Co-Pitcher of the Year (Jesse Darcy) and two Freshmen All-Americans (Tom Costigan and Brian Pendergast). The staff also had three players among the national leaders in ERA (Darcy, Pendergast, and Josh Santerre). Darcy mentored the pitching staff to a 4.03 ERA in 2006, an average that ranked the staff 46th in the NCAA. The Jaspers tallied a program record 406 strikeouts, while posting five shutouts. MAAC Pitcher of the Year Chris Cody anchored the staff, and was fourth in the NCAA in ERA (1.42) and 12th in wins (12). Darcy returned to Riverdale after playing two seasons of professional ball with the Can-Am League’s New Jersey Jackals. Darcy posted a 2-2 record over 46 innings for the Jackals, making four starts. He was part of a combined onehitter for the Jackals in 2003. The Levittown, N.Y. native was a four-year letter winner at Manhattan College, and graduated as the all-time program leader in wins (24), innings pitched (341.1), appearances (60), complete games (17), and starts (47), and second all-time in strikeouts (253). He also graduated with the single season records for wins (8), complete games (6), and innings pitched (106.2).

Jason Spaulding is in his second season as an assistant coach on the Manhattan College baseball staff. Spaulding helped guide the Jaspers to a program record 35 wins and the 2009 MAAC Regular-Season championship during his first year in Riverdale. He mentored a team whose offense set single season conference records in team batting average (.349), hits (657) and doubles (130). Spaulding joined the Manhattan coaching staff after a decorated coaching career at the collegiate, high school and American Legion level for eight years. Spaulding assists in the daily operations of the baseball office, including recruiting.

Spaulding, a native of Swanton, Vt., lettered four years and served two as team captain at the University of Vermont. A right handed-pitcher, Spaulding finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in appearances, while tying for fifth in victories (15) and in the top-10 for strikeouts and innings pitched. Among the many highlights of his coaching career, Spaulding helped guide the Essex (Vt.) American Legion team to five state titles and a berth in the Northeast Regional Championship in 2004. Over this five year span, his squads compiled a 67-0 overall record in Vermont. Spaulding has also served as an assistant coach for Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, Vt.

Doug O’Lear is in his second season as head student manager for the Manhattan baseball team. A native of Amityville, N.Y., O’Lear is working towards a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. O’Lear attended St. John the Baptist High School on Long Island and has served as an umpire for Amityville Little League since 2006. Outside of baseball, O’Lear enjoys to ski, snow mobile, boat, fish and scuba dive. He is the son of Michael and Cynthia O’Lear.

2009 season review Powered by one of the top offenses in MAAC history the 2009 Manhattan baseball team rolled to their second straight Regular-Season Championship and fourth consecutive 30-win season. Kevin Leighton was honored as MAAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Jaspers to a school record 35 wins. Along the ride Manhattan held the nation’s longest home winning streak which reached 21 straight victories at Van Cortlandt Park. The Jaspers shattered the MAAC’s single season record posting a .349 team batting average, which was the fifth best in NCAA Division I last year. Junior outfielder Kevin Nieto helped anchor the offense as he led the country with 1.57 runs per game, he scored a MAAC record 72 runs, and finished with the league’s second highest batting average (.396). He was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) AllAmerica Third Team. Junior lefthander Mike Gazzola was selected the MAAC Pitcher of the Year, becoming just the third Jasper to earn this honor. Gazzola, who posted a 7-1 record with 54 strikeouts, saved his best performance of the year for the MAAC Championships when he delivered his fourth complete game.

anthony armenio Despite a premature exit from the MAAC Tournament, Manhattan enjoyed another successful season with April proving to be the strongest month for the Jaspers winning 18 of 21 contests. Manhattan showed it resiliency several times during the year by notching comeback victories, including back-to-back late inning rallies at Delaware (March 8) and a nine run come-from-behind triumph at Army (April 8). Manhattan also picked up key non-conference wins over Brigham Young University (Feb. 21) and local BIG EAST institution Seton Hall (March 18). Manhattan cruised through the conference schedule to outright win the regular-season title with an 18-6 league mark. Eight Jaspers received All-MAAC recognition, a list highlighted by First Team recipients Gazzola, Nieto, Mike McCann and Anthony Armenio. Senior co-captain Ruben Perez, along with sophomores Chad Salem, Mark Onorati and Austin Sheffield were all named to the Second Team. Junior pitchers Tom Costigan and Tom Moran represented

Manhattan on the MAAC All-Academic squad. Manhattan completely rewrote the offensive section of its single season record book. Six Jaspers exceeded the single season hits mark as McCann led the way with 85, surpassing former standout Matt Rizzotti who had 72 hits in 2005. McCann’s hit parade included a 21 game streak. Armenio set the single season doubles mark with 22 and Nieto tied his own single season record with six triples. McCann and Armenio blasted 13 long balls apiece to help set a program record with 61 home runs. The Jaspers also crushed MAAC offensive records in runs scored (480), hits (657), RBI (439) and doubles (130). On the national scene, the Jaspers high octane offense ranked in the top-25 for scoring offense (12th – 9.1 runs per game), doubles (22nd – 2.45 per game) and slugging percentage (24th - .529). Manhattan graduated the winningest class in program history which featured middle infielders Perez and Ryan Masters. The tandem contributed to 135 victories, posted a 75-25 conference record and were a dominant 55-13-1 mark at Van Cortlandt Park over their four year careers. Perez and Masters helped Manhattan to its first MAAC Championship and were a part of the Jaspers team which advanced to the 2006 NCAA Regional Finals after upsetting top-seeded Nebraska. Perez, an All-MAAC Academic selection, finished his career third in program history in doubles (47), and seventh all-time in both RBI (124) and home runs (16).

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009. Dr. O’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. As dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of Arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200. Before coming to New York, Dr. O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide Honors Program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, Dr. O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English. As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. O’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participation in the mission of Catholic higher education. A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and Honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American Literature and Language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors. Dr. O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in Leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior English major at Fordham).

A 1968 Manhattan graduate, Byrnes is now in his 22nd year as the College’s director of athletics. Since he arrived back in Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. The men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids during his tenure. In addition to eight NCAA appearances (four women, four men), the Jaspers have made five post-season and four pre-season NIT appearances. Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships (men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s tennis, baseball, softball and volleyball). In addition, to date, 24 Manhattan student-athletes have received All-America honors for both their athletic and academic achievements. Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation. A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A from City University in Seattle, Washington. Byrnes’ Manhattan College athletic career included service to the Jaspers’ club football squad, where he served as a captain and performed as both a defensive tackle and offensive end. He was an assistant coach in 1969 and helped lead the Jaspers to a 6-2 season. Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970 to 1973. Under his coaching leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tournament appearances in baseball and basketball, and captured the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972). In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, Byrnes also served as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association, the committee that makes the selections for the annual National Invitation Tournament (NIT) from 1997-1999. Currently, he is the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball committee and the committee on athletic administration. He is also a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee and the 1999-00 NCAA Championship Cabinet. Byrnes resides in Croton-on-Hudon, N.Y., along with his wife Rosemary. He is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan, ’97), Brian (Manhattan, ’99), Darren, and Brigid.

Doug Straley was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine in August 2009, after serving as Manhattan's Director of Sports Medicine for the previous six years. Straley supervises the athletic training of the 300+ student-athletes who compete for Manhattan’s 19 Division I athletic teams. Prior to his arrival in Riverdale, Straley served as the director of sports medicine at Manhattanville College in nearby Purchase, NY. At Manhattanville, he coordinated the rehabilitation, prevention, and management of athletic injuries for over 250 intercollegiate NCAA Division III student-athletes. Before his tenure at Manhattanville, Straley worked for three years as the assistant director of sports medicine at Assumption College. He assisted with the medical care of the athletic program’s 19 Division II varsity sport teams. Straley, a 1998 graduate of Northeastern University, worked as a student athletic trainer during his undergraduate years. In 1999, he received a master of science degree in athletic training from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Additionally, Straley served as the head athletic trainer for the Westchester Wildfire, a United States Basketball League (USBL) team coached by former New York Knick John Starks. Straley had been published on numerous occasions, and has made several presentations based upon his research in the field of Athletic Training. Straley holds Athletic Training licenses in New York, Massachusetts, and Georgia, and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist, as an Athletic Trainer, and in CPR and First Aid. A decorated Eagle Scout, Straley won the Koko Kassabian award while at Northeastern for outstanding achievement in leadership, scholarship, and professional development. A native of Newton, Mass., Straley currently resides in Dobbs Ferry, NY with his wife Jennifer and their daughter Annabelle.

Katie Leighton ’02 enters her third year as academic advisor for the Manhattan College Athletic Department. Leighton manages the academic support for Manhattan’s 300+ student-athletes, a role which has helped the department rank among the nation’s best according to several NCAA measures of academic success. Leighton’s duties include assisting student-athletes in class scheduling, monitor their academic progress, oversee the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and coordinate tutoring and other special needs. Prior this appointment, Leighton worked as Manhattan’s compliance coordinator for the 2006-07 academic year. In this role, she was responsible for monitoring and regulating NCAA eligibility rules.

Leighton, an alumna of Manhattan, was a four year letterwinner and two-time team captain for the women’s soccer program. During her career, she was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team three consecutive years. She earned CoSIDA Academic All District I Team honors twice, and was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team at the conclusion of her senior year. Leighton graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education in 2002, and earned a master’s degree of arts with a concentration in counseling in 2007. Following her undergraduate studies at Manhattan, Leighton worked as a second grade teacher at Harley Avenue Primary School in Elwood, N.Y. She returned to Manhattan in 2003 holding the roll of assistant compliance coordinator/ticket manager for two years. During the 2005-06 academic year, Leighton was the assistant director for student-athlete support services at Columbia University.

metro atlantic athletic conference With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 29th year of competition during the 2009-2010 academic year. The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun. Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members the University of Detroit Mercy, Mount St. Mary’s University, Saint Joseph’s University, Virginia Military Institute and Wagner College compete in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford begin competition in women’s golf this season. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2009-2010 academic year. The MAAC Basketball Championships return to the Times Union Center in Albany, New York, for 2010, with Bridgeport’s Arena at Harbor Yard preparing to host the 2011 championship. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2004 and 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties will host that event again in 2010. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006.

MAAC Associate Sports In June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for student-athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena – and five associate members – Detroit Mercy, Mount St. Mary’s, Saint Joseph’s, Virginia Military Institute and Wagner. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena. In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is made up of three MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as three associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova and Wagner. Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University will also join the league for the

2010 MAAC Championship. In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members – Albany, Boston University and Hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010.

Academics and Athletics The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and Sovereign Bank Arena. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the fabled Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, where the cross country championships are contested, and Waterfront Park in Trenton, home of the 2008 and 2009 MAAC Baseball Championship. This year, the MAAC will take its women’s soccer championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. In 2010, the MAAC Volleyball Championship will be at Walt Disney World. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Celebration Golf Club, located in Celebration, Florida, for the second consecutive year. In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 74 NIT appearances and 43 NCAA appearances. In addition, Rider represented the league last season in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. Last fall, the Iona men’s cross country team earned a second-place finish for the second straight year at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. Canisius softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan and Marist baseball and Loyola soccer and lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage. The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc. to sponsor the MAAC web page. Launched in November 1999, www.maacsports. com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, multimedia content and an online merchandise store. The MAAC President for the 2009-2010 academic year is Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., the President of Loyola University Maryland. The Vice-President is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. Bob Byrnes, Director of Athletics at Manhattan College, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Elizabeth Donohue, Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Marist College will serve as Vice Chair.

JASPERS IN THE PROS The Manhattan College baseball team has, through the years, produced some of the most successful athletes that the school has known. What follows is a list of former diamond dwellers that have made it to the professional ranks.

JAKE THIELMAN - Pitched two seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals (1905-06), two for the Cleveland Naps (1907-08) and appeared in one game for the Boston Red Sox (1908), posting a 30-28 lifetime record, with a 3.16 ERA. PAT DUFF - Had one at-bat with the Washington Senators in the 1906 season.

TOM O’HARA - Played the 1906-07 seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals as an outfielder, posting a .252 batting average in 62 games.

TOM LOUGHRAN - Played for the New York Gothams in the 1884 season, appearing in nine games. BILL FINLEY - Played for the New York Giants in the 1886 season, appearing in 13 games. JACK TAYLOR - Pitched nine seasons for the New York Giants (1), Philadelphia Phillies (6), St. Louis Browns (1), and Cincinnati Reds (1) from 1891-1899. Posted a 120-117 lifetime record, with a 4.23 ERA, including three straight 20-win seasons. Recorded a 26-14 record with 33 complete games in the 1895 season. PETE McBRIDE - Pitched for the Cleveland Spiders (1898) and the St. Louis Perfectos (1899) for one season each, appearing in a total of 12 games. HENRY THIELMAN - Pitched for the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Reds in the 1902 season, and the Brooklyn Superbas in the 1903 season. Won nine games in 25 appearances for the Reds in 1902. LUIS CASTRO - Played the 1902 season for the Philadelphia Athletics as an infielder, posting a .245 average with 15 RBI over 43 games. Was the first Latin American to play in the Major Leagues. DOC SCANLAN - Pitched eight seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates (2), Brooklyn Superbas (5), and Brooklyn Dodgers (1) from 1903-1911, compiling a 65-71 record and a 3.00 ERA with 15 shutouts and five saves. His best season was in 1906, when he posted an 18-13 record with a 3.19 ERA and six shutouts. CY FERRY - Pitched two seasons for the Detroit Tigers (1904) and Cleveland Naps (1905), appearing in four games JIM MULLIN - Split the 1904 season between the Philadelphia Athletics and the Washington Senators, and played the 1905 season with the Senators. Finished his career with a .197 average as an infielder, appearing in 118 games.

EDDIE ZIMMERMAN - Played the 1906 season with the St. Louis Cardinals and the 1911 season with the Brooklyn Dodgers, both at third base. He appeared in 122 of his 127 career games in 1911, batting .185 with three homers and 36 RBI. COTTON MINAHAN - Pitched in two games for the Cincinnati Reds in the 1907 season. CHRIS MAHONEY - Pitched in one game for the Boston Red Sox in the 1910 season. GEORGE CHALMERS - Played seven seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies (1910-1916), posting a 29-41 record with a 3.41 ERA over 121 games. Won a career-high 13 games in the 1911 season.

JOE GALLAGHER - Played during the 1939 and 1940 seasons with the New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns and Brooklyn Dodgers. An outfielder, Gallagher was best known as a long-ball threat off the bench. Hit 26 doubles, five triples and 16 homers while batting .273, with a slugging percentage of .446. XAVIER RESCIGNO ‘37 - Pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1943-1945. Had 19 wins as a starter and a 14-12 record with 16 saves as a reliever. CHUCK SCHILLING ‘61 - Hit .240 as a second baseman with the Boston Red Sox from 1961-65. Broke Jackie Robinson’s second base fielding record. BOB CHLUPSA ‘67 Relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1970 and 1971 seasons. Drafted in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1967 draft MARK CONNORS ’71 Former New York Yankee pitching coach. Had been a roving minor league pitching coach for years. Head coach at the University of Tennessee in 198889. Currently serving as the bullpen coach for the Texas Rangers.

DICK COTTER - Played 46 career games at catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies (1911) and Chicago Cubs (1912), posting a .280 career batting average. JIM HANLEY ‘10 - Pitched one game in the 1913 season for the New York Yankees. CHARLES MEARA ‘08 - Played four games for the New York Yankees in the 1914 season, batting .286 over four games. JOHN “BUDDY” HASSETT ’33 - Played seven Major League seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers (3), Boston Bees/Braves (3) and New York Yankees (1) from 1936-1942. His lifetime batting average was .292 over 929 games as an infielder/outfielder. Batted .333 in the 1942 World Series with the Yankees. NICK TREMARK ‘34 - Played outfield for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1934-36. Had a lifetime batting average of .250. ANTON KARL ‘35 - Pitched for the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Braves from 1943-47. Posted an 18-23 record with 26 saves and a 3.51 lifetime ERA.

TOM WADDELL ‘81 - Relief pitcher for the Cleveland Indians from 1984-86. Posted a 15-11 lifetime record. Signed a $350,000 arbitration contract in 1987. MIKE MURPHY ‘83 - Drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 18th round as a pitcher. Spent three years in the Indian’s minor league system. NEIL LONGO ‘98 - A ninth round selection of the Seattle Mariners in the 1998 Major League Draft. SCOTT MARTIN ‘01 - Signed by the Long Island Ducks. In 2002, signed as a free agent with the San Diego Padres. Played the 2003 season for the Brockton Rocks of the Independent League.

RYAN DARCY ‘03 - Signed by the New Jersey Jackals of the Northeast League following the 2003 season. MATT CUCURULLO ‘04 - Signed by the Elmira Pioneers of the Northeast League following his 2004 college season. Played for the Brockton Rox in the 2005 season. MIKE PARISI ‘05 Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth round of the 2004 MLB Draft. Won a Florida State League Championship with the Palm Beach Cardinals in the 2005 season. Played the 2006 season with the Double A Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League, and was the winning pitcher in the inaugural game at the new Busch Stadium, featuring the Cardinals Double A vs. Triple A squads. Reported to the Cardinals’ Major League Spring Training Camp in 2007. Played the 2007 season with the AAA Memphis Redbirds, and was named to the 40-man roster on November 20, 2007. Made Major League debut with St. Louis Cardinals on May 5, 2008 versus the Colorado Rockies. Appeared in 12 games for the Cardinals in 2008. Reassigned to the Memphis Redbirds of the Pacific Coast League for the 2009 season. Selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 2009 MLB Rule 5 Draft and started the 2010 season as a member of the Cubs’ 40man roster . CHRIS GASKIN ‘05 - Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 23rd round of the 2004 MLB Draft. Played with the Short Season Class A Boise Hawks (Northwest League) during the 2005 season. Played for the New Haven County Cutters of the Can-Am League in 2006 and 2007. STEVE BRONDER ‘05 - Signed into the Chicago Cubs organization. Played for the Mesa Cubs in the Arizona Rookie League in the summer of 2005, before playing with the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League in 2006. CHRIS CODY ‘06 - Drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the eighth round of the 2006 MLB Draft. Played the 2006 season for the Oneonta Tigers of the New York-Penn League. Was named a Full A Mid-West League All-Star team in 2007 before being promoted to Advanced A and subsequently being

traded to the Milwaukee Brewer organization for a Major League reliever. Began 2008 season with West Virginia Power, a Class A South Atlantic League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Promoted to Brevard County Manatees of Class A+ Florida State League and led organization with 1.81 ERA. Named Milwaukee Brewers Organizational Pitcher of the Year in 2008. Promoted to Triple A Nashville Sounds in 2009 after starting the season with Double A Huntsville Stars. Named Southern League Pitcher of the Week while with Huntsville. JOHN FITZPATRICK ‘06 - Signed as a free agent into the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 2007. Was promoted to the Short Season A State College Spikes. JESSE DARCY ‘07 - Drafted in the 38th round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, and played the 2007 season for the Short Season A Hudson Valley Renegades. Played 2008 season with the Columbus Catfish, a Class A Minor League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Named 2008 Pitcher of the Year for Tampa Bay affiliate. Played 2009 season with Class A Charlotte Stone Crabs of Florida State League. Signed with the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League for 2010 season.

NICK DERBA ‘07 Drafted in the 30th round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Was promoted to the Swing of the Quad Cities (Full A) after beginning the 2007 season with the Short Season A Batavia Muckdogs. Reported to St. Louis Cardinals spring training camp in 2008. Played 2008 season with Palm Beach Cardinals of the Class A Advanced Florida State League. Promoted to Double A affiliate Springfield Cardinals in 2009. JOSH SANTERRE ‘07 - Signed as a free agent into the Kansas City Royals organization in 2007. Pitched for the Arizona League Royals in 2007. MATT RIZZOTTI ‘08 - Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round of the 2007 MLB Draft. Played the 2007 season for the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League. Spent 2008 season with the Lakewood Blueclaws of Class A South Atlantic League affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Played for Philadelphia Phillies affiliate Clearwater Threshers of the Class A Advanced Florida State League in 2009. Rene Ruiz ‘07 - Signed with the Big Bend Cowboys of the Continental Baseball League for the 2009 season.
