season preview Last season, the Manhattan College men’s lacrosse team had one of the most successful campaigns in program history. In 2009, the Jaspers registered 10 wins, their secondhighest total ever, qualified for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament for the second consecutive season and played in the MAAC Championship Game for the first time in five years. This season, the team will look to build on that success, as well as establishing some new program standards. Manhattan has never reached the MAAC Tournament in three successive campaigns or played for the conference championship in back-to-back years. Both of those marks will have to be met in order to attain the ultimate goal: winning the MAAC Championship and moving on to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. Head Coach Tim McIntee feels as if that goal is within reach, as he loses just two letterwinners from last season’s squad. The 2010 roster features 32 returning letterwinners, including eight returning starters, as well as 13 newcomers, many of whom may be called upon to fill big roles immediately.

of the Jaspers’ top offensive options last season, finishing with 18 goals and 30 points. McIntee is looking for Jensen to establish himself as one of the premier offensive players in the conference this season. Manhattan’s fourth returning attacker is junior Kelly Mahon. After being limited by injuries during his freshman campaign, Mahon came off the bench in all 18 games last season and tallied five goals. “It’s exciting to have all four of these guys returning,” McIntee said. “I have very high expectations, and I’m looking for each of them to have a season as good as or better than last year.” Freshmen Jason Davis and Brian McGrath will likely step into the rotation immediately. Davis is a very athletic, dangerous shooter,

Attack

The attack was the Jaspers’ strength last season, and it figures to be one of the team’s strengths again in 2010. Manhattan returns all three starting attackmen from last year’s squad, including senior James Synowiez, the 2009 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. Playing his first season of Division I lacrosse after transferring from Onondaga Community College, Synowiez immediately left his mark on the Manhattan record book, notching 43 goals and 55 points, the secondhighest single-season totals in program history. His 3.06 points per game led the MAAC, and he ranked 14th in the nation with 2.39 goals per game. Another transfer who came to Manhattan last season and made a tremendous impact is senior Joe Variano. Variano, who spent his first two seasons at Drexel, had a teamhigh 15 assists to go along with 23 goals during his first campaign in Green & White. The third returning starter along the front line is junior Justin Jensen. Jensen emerged as one

while McGrath shoots well and is a pure finisher. McIntee has high expectations for both players in the future, and they both figure to see their roles increase as the season goes on. Also figuring to see time on attack are sophomores Brendan Rogers and Bryan Hall. Rogers spent some time in the midfield last season, while injuries cost Hall the entire 2009 campaign.

Sophomore Zach Nisson will look to overcome injuries that plagued his freshman season, and freshman Paul Moreau was a two-time team MVP at Pearl River High School.

Midfield

McIntee also has high expectations from his midfield unit, as all of Manhattan’s top offensive midfielders return in 2010. Senior captains Salvatore Spatarella and Luke Dilillo are the leaders of the unit. Spatarella has scored 37 goals in 45 career games, including 19 last season, while Dilillo found the back of the net five times in 2009 and can double as a front line attacker. Junior Sal Perrotto is set to graduate a year early, meaning this is also his final season in Riverdale. Perrotto emerged as one of Manhattan’s top offensive options last season, scoring 21 goals and earning a place on the MAAC All-Academic Team. Also competing for starting roles will be senior John Washburn, juniors Brett Miranda, Mike Llewellyn and Chris LoGuidice, and sophomores Tyler Sabens and Chris Spillane. Washburn played mainly on the man-up unit last year, and he’ll likely do the same again this season if he stays healthy. Miranda played in all 18 games last season and scored five goals, while Mike Llewellyn is a valuable member of the man-up attack. LoGiudice spent some time in the face-off circle during the fall and may be called upon to fill that role during the regular season. Sabens was injured for the last half of 2009, but McIntee thinks he has the talent to break into the top four. Spillane will see a lot of playing time as both an offensive and short-stick defensive midfielder. “There’s a lot more competition on the team (this season),” McIntee said, “so the guys going for those top six spots will really need to step up their game. I expect our first- and secondline middies to help us get back to the playoffs.” Second Team All-MAAC performer Angelo Marrano, the Jaspers’ primary face-off man last season, was the only field player lost to graduation. Junior Sean Firth served as Marrano’s back up last season, and will be asked to provide similar production as Manhattan’s number one. Competing with Firth for the number one role

will be freshman Chace Calkin, who comes to Manhattan with tremendous accolades after leading Mullen High School to the 2009 Colorado state championship. Fellow freshmen Jon Crean and Tyler Jarvis both possess nice intangibles that make them options both as face-off men and offensive midfielders. Senior Max Cabasso’s lacrosse IQ and ability to quarterback the defense make him the leader of Manhattan’s short-stick defensive midfield corps. Junior Erich Smith is the returning starter at the position, while sophomore Joe Lenihan is back from injury and has the potential to become one of the premier defensive midfielders in the MAAC. McIntee considers Lenihan one of the best athletes on the team. Junior John Llewellyn, Mike’s twin brother, is a valuable two-way utility middie who is a key member of the Jaspers’ mandown defense. Sophomore Jordan Sherman has the size, speed and skill to perform at a high level and will also get the opportunity to contribute. Manhattan’s top two options at long-stick defensive middie are seniors Daniel Buser and Kyle Ochwat. A former walk-on, Buser eventually earned a scholarship, and was named captain by his teammates prior to the season. He will likely split time with Ochwat, who made 16 starts along the back line and grabbed 39 ground balls in 2009. Sophomore Mike Brooks was the Jaspers’ starting pole a year ago and figures to be in the mix on both the even-strength and mandown units. Senior Bobby Morris has developed nicely during his four years, and the coaching staff likes the effort and commitment he brings to the field every day. A quartet of freshmen—Ed Bellacera, Justin Cornetto, Alex Grandal and Igor Laray will also compete for playing time in the crowded midfield.

Defense

If the offense is the Jaspers’ strength, the defense is the key to their success. Senior captain Steve Sternberg returns for his final season as the anchor of the back line. Usually assigned to cover the opponents’ top attacker, Sternberg has been a defensive mainstay over his first three seasons. Last year, he collected 51 ground balls and caused 28 turnovers en route to his second straight Second Team All-MAAC selection. Sophomore Kyle Moeller emerged as a valuable complement to Sternberg

last season. Starting all 18 games as a freshman, Moeller corralled 48 ground balls and posted a team-best 33 caused turnovers in 2009. McIntee has high expectations for Moeller, who he calls one of the best takeaway guys he’s seen in 13 years as Manhattan’s head coach. The third returning starter along the back line is junior Mike Pisciotta, who is one of the toughest off-ball players out there. Also fighting for playing time on defense will be junior Chris Kaiser and sophomore Steve Harvey, both of whom have been beset by injuries since arriving in Riverdale. Freshmen Jeff Mohr and Evan Potter will also be in the mix defensively.

Goalkeeper

Perhaps the biggest question mark entering the 2010 campaign is in goal, where four-year starter John Geagan backstopped the Jaspers the MAAC Tournament in each of the last two seasons. Juniors Matt Solomito and Jon Fiorillo are in a two-way fight to replace him between the pipes. Solomito is the only returning goalkeeper on the roster and has an excellent understanding of the defense that he honed in two seasons as Geagan’s backup. Solomito got an opportunity to show off his skills during the fall season and performed well. However, he will be pushed for the starting position by Fiorillo, who joins the Jaspers this season after two years at Onondaga Community College. Fiorillo was named NJCAA Goalie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Lazers to an undefeated National Championship in 2009. “Both goalies will see time,” McIntee said. “Matt Solomito will get the chance to prove he wants to be No. 1, and I think his toughness will prevail. Jon Fiorillo comes in as the premier JUCO goalie in the country and has the best stick skills of any goalie I’ve had in 13 years here. He just needs to get acclimated.”

meeting with Hofstra on April 6. Johns Hopkins, Princeton and Hofstra are all ranked in the Preseason Top 10. The Jaspers also have a Saturday night home game against Villanova on April 10. “This schedule was put together last May, and my approach was to get exposure,” McIntee said. “We need to play games against teams like that. If we win the MAAC, we’ll play one of the top teams anyway (in the NCAA Tournament), so it’ll be good to have an idea of the size, speed and skill level we’ll be up against going into it.” After reaching the MAAC Championship Game last season, Manhattan was picked to finish second in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Jaspers begin the conference slate at Gaelic Park on March 20 against MAAC newcomer Detroit. Manhattan also hosts VMI (April 3), Wagner (April 21) and Saint Joseph’s (April 24) in conference action. Last season, the Jaspers didn’t clinch a playoff berth until securing a win at Marist on the final day. This year, Manhattan visits the Red Foxes in the penultimate game on April 28, then ends the regular season with a visit to defending MAAC champion and preseason favorite Siena on May 1. The top four teams in the final regular season standings advance to the MAAC Tournament, which will be held in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., from May 7-9.

Schedule

The Jaspers play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in program history this season. The season gets started on Feb. 19 with a nationallytelevised matchup at nine-time National Champion Johns Hopkins. Manhattan hosts perennial national power Princeton for the first time in program history on March 9 and visits the lacrosse hotbed of Long Island for a 2 0 1 0 • M A N H A T T A N C O L L E G E lac r o s s e

Tim McIntee

Head Coach • C.W. Post ’88 • 13th Season (78-103)

Now in his 13th season as head coach, Tim McIntee has been at the forefront of the successful turnaround and development of the Manhattan men’s lacrosse program. The all-time winningest coach in program history, McIntee has a 78-103 record as mentor of the Jaspers, including a 51-46 mark in MAAC games. Having inherited a fledgling program in the fall of 1997, McIntee wasted no time in establishing the Jaspers as a perennial contender in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. In the spring of 1998, the head coach’s first season on the Manhattan sideline, McIntee’s team started its MAAC run with conference wins over Siena and Providence. Under his guidance, the team has qualified for the fourteam MAAC Tournament six times (2000, 2002, 2004-05 and 2008-09). McIntee’s work came to complete fruition in 2002, as his men’s lacrosse squad went on to accomplish a feat never before reached by any other Manhattan team—the Jaspers went undefeated (9-0) in conference play en route to capturing the program’s first-ever MAAC Championship. Manhattan posted a thrilling 9-8 win over Mount St. Mary’s in the MAAC Championship Game to earn the conference’s first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Manhattan dropped a 12-7 decision to a powerful Georgetown squad. For his efforts, McIntee was named MAAC Coach of the Year in 2002. The 11 victories that season were the most in team history. The 2004 team finished the regular season at 7-6 and entered the MAAC Championships with a 5-3 conference record and the number four seed in the four-team tournament. In the semifinals, he Jaspers stunned top-seeded Marist, which entered the postseason with a perfect 8-0 mark during the MAAC regular season. Despite falling to Providence in the final game, Manhattan concluded a season in which they made the playoffs for the second time in three years, a first for the program. After reaching to the MAAC Tournament again in 2005 (its second straight appearance and fourth in six years), Manhattan returned to the tournament in 2008 following a threeyear absence. After losing their first two conference games, the Jaspers rallied to win five of their last six and clinched a postseason berth with back-to-back double-overtime home victories over Saint Joseph’s and VMI to end the

regular season. The 2009 season was one of the best in program history. The Jaspers qualified for the MAAC Tournament for the second straight year and knocked off Mount St. Mary’s in the semifinals to advance to the MAAC Championship Game for the first time since 2004. Despite a loss to Siena in the title game, Manhattan’s 10 wins in 2009 were the second-most in program history. McIntee was honored as MAAC Coach of the Year for the first time in 2000, as the Jaspers qualified for the MAAC Tournament for the first time and advanced to the finals, where they lost to Saint Joseph’s. The Jaspers finished that season with an 8-9 overall record after going 5-4 in the MAAC during the regular season. In the summer of 2002, McIntee was selected as a coach for Team Ireland at the 2002 World Games. He was the offensive coordinator and man-up coach. The Irish team went 6-2 with key victories over Korea, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Italy. McIntee joined Manhattan after a stellar playing and coaching career on the collegiate, professional and international level. While at C.W. Post, McIntee was a threetime NCAA All-American and a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse as a midfielder. McIntee went on to play with Team USA in the 1990 World Championships. He starred in the professional ranks as a member of the New York Saints of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League. In seven seasons with the Saints (1990-97), McIntee recorded 97 points (46 goals, 51 assists), which ranks him among the all-time leading scorers in franchise history. Prior to Manhattan, McIntee was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at St. John’s University from 1993-96. He also coached the boys’ lacrosse team at Syosset High School in 1996 and 1997 and coached East Islip High School from 1994-1997. McIntee currently lives in the Bronx with his wife, Deirdre, and two-year-old daughter, Emily.

Rick Ruggles

Assistant Coach • St. John’s ‘07 • 2nd Season

Rick Ruggles enters his second season as an assistant coach at Manhattan. A 2007 graduate of St. John's, Ruggles came to Manhattan after one season as the defensive coordinator at Northern Valley Old Tappan High School, where he helped the team improve from 2-11 in 2007 to 5-8 in 2008.

Ruggles played midfield at St. John's and was named an ECAC Academic All-Star following his senior season. He joined the Red Storm after two seasons at Nassau County Community College. An offensive midfielder, Ruggles helped the team reach the NJCAA semifinals in both the 2004 and 2005 seasons. A native of Fair Lawn, N.J., Ruggles was a two-year team captain at Fair Lawn High School. He resides in Hoboken, N.J.

Tim Clancy

Assistant Coach • Manhattan ‘07 • 1st Season Former Manhattan College men’s lacrosse player Tim Clancy returns to the program this season as an assistant coach. A 2007 Manhattan graduate, Clancy was a fouryear letterwinner for the Jaspers and served as team captain during his senior season. Clancy played 45 games as a defender for the Jaspers. He collected 57 career ground balls and was part of a defensive unit that ranked 24th in the nation in 2006. Clancy scored his only career

goal in his final collegiate game, a 13-6 win over Canisius on April 28, 2007. He was named team MVP and earned an All-MAAC selection that season. In addition, the Jaspers qualified for the MAAC Tournament twice during his career, including an appearance in the 2004 MAAC Championship Game. A native of Floral Park, N.Y., Clancy attended Floral Park High School, where he was captain of the football, basketball and lacrosse teams. Clancy twice earned AllNassau County honors in lacrosse. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in school counseling and resides in the Bronx.

A 1968 Manhattan graduate, Byrnes is now in his 22nd year as the College’s director of athletics. Since he arrived back in Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. The men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids during his tenure. In addition to eight NCAA appearances (four women, four men), the Jaspers have made five post-season and four pre-season NIT appearances. Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships (men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s tennis, baseball, softball and volleyball). In addition, to date, 24 Manhattan student-athletes have received All-America honors for both their athletic and academic achievements. Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the MorrisonKnudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation. A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A from City University in Seattle, Washington.

Byrnes’ Manhattan College athletic career included service to the Jaspers’ club football squad, where he served as a captain and performed as both a defensive tackle and offensive end. He was an assistant coach in 1969 and helped lead the Jaspers to a 6-2 season. Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970 to 1973. Under his coaching leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tournament appearances in baseball and basketball, and captured the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972). In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, Byrnes also served as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association, the committee that makes the selections for the annual National Invitation Tournament (NIT) from 1997-1999. Currently, he is the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball committee and the committee on athletic administration. He is also a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee and the 1999-00 NCAA Championship Cabinet. Byrnes resides in Croton-on-Hudon, N.Y., along with his wife Rosemary. He is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan, ’97), Brian (Manhattan, ’99), Darren, and Brigid.

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009. Dr. O’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. As dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of Arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200. Before coming to New York, Dr. O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide Honors Program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, Dr. O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English. As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. O’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a

member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participation in the mission of Catholic higher education. A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and Honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American Literature and Language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors. Dr. O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in Leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior English major at Fordham).
