2011 SEASON PREVIEW
MIDFIELD
JUSTIN JENSEN RIVERDALE, N.Y.- The 2010 campaign was one of a record-breaking nature for the men’s lacrosse program. For the third consecutive season, the Jaspers made an appearance in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament after finishing 5-3 in divisional play, a first in their 15-year history. Making their presence known on a national stage, the Kelly green and white gained acclaim on the defensive side of the field, leading the country in man-down defense while recording a percentage of (10-59) .831. An impressive feat, it was the first time the Jaspers finished the season leading the NCAA in any statistical category. This season, the Jaspers look to return to the conference finals and make the fourth time the charm as they usher in a new era of talent in Riverdale. “We have a lot of new faces after losing some top players to graduation,” 14th-year Coach Tim McIntee said. “2011 will be about relying on our youth, enthusiasm and excitement to play the game. If our players can form a unified front, we will have success this season.”

ATTACK
For the first time in two seasons, Manhattan will hit the turf without primary offensive threats, James Synowiez and Joe Variano. An All-MAAC First Team member, Synowiez recorded 81 goals and 105 points in just two seasons with the team. Leaving another vacant spot, Variano departs along with 19 scores from last year’s squad. However, not all is lost in the Bronx. Senior captain Justin Jensen returns to lead the Jaspers on the scoring attack. A MAAC All-Academic Team selection, Jensen finished second on the team in goals (19) and total points (34). “Justin is our all-around best player and does a little bit of everything.” McIntee said. “We need him to continue to grow as a goal scorer this season.” Pairing with Jensen, quick-footed senior Kelly Mahon looks to build off last season in which he tallied 11 goals, including a hat trick against Saint Joseph’s on April 24th. “Kelly has the size and ability to be a big contributor. We look for him to increase his scoring prowess this year,” McIntee said. Adding to the mix, junior Brendan Rodgers, who appeared in eight games, and second-year members Jason Davis (2 goals) and Brian McGrath, will be counted on to find the net in bunches throughout 2011.
2011 • MANHATTAN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE
While finding consistency up top might be a work in progress, a slew of veterans return in the middle of the field for the Kelly green and white. After serving as one of the top lines in 2010, the trio of senior captain Mike Llewellyn, fellow classmate Brett Miranda and junior Tyler Sabens are primed for breakout seasons as the go-to midfielders for the Jaspers. “This trio has played a great deal before and we look for them to lead on and off the field,” McIntee said. Llewellyn, known for his high lacrosse IQ and team-first mentality, registered four points (2 goals) in 16 games last season. Fourth-year member Brett Miranda provides scoring punch, coming of a campaign in which he recorded a career- high four goals. The x-factor could be versatile junior Tyler Sabens, who recorded 16 points (5 goals) while playing in every contest as a sophomore. Waiting in the wings, skilled second-year middle men, Tyler Jarvis (3 goals) and Jon Crean, and newcomers Marcel Godino and Brett Madarasz could develop into key members with increased time. In the face-off department, a pair of seniors (Chris LoGiudice and Sean Firth) and sophomores (Jason Davis and Jon Crean) will look to build off last year’s .434. percentage.
DEFENSE
Despite the losses of two key members in All-MAAC First Team selection Steve Sternberg and Second Team All-MAAC member Kyle Moeller, Manhattan brings back an impressive list of defenders. “Our defensive side returns tremendous experience across the board and we’re counting on them for a big year,” McIntee said. The quartet of senior Erich Smith, juniors Jordan Sherman and captain Chris Spillane, and sophomore Alex Grandal should make it hard for opposing offenses in Riverdale and beyond. The foursome combined for 54 groundballs and 12 caused turnovers as one of the MAAC’s top units in 2010. Smith (2 goals) and Spillane appeared in every contest
2011 SEASON PREVIEW last season while Sherman and Grandal received quality minutes in 11 games. At long stick defensive midfield, a band of unsung heroes look to make an impact in the grit and toughness department. Senior captain John Llewellyn, fourthyear talents Mike Pisciotta (17 ground balls) and Sean Firth, juniors Steve Harvey and Mike Brooks, and sophomore Evan Potter, are expected to build off solid campaigns and take the next step forward for Manhattan. Joining the ranks, newcomers Mike Kenney, Dan Sweeney, Mike Strebel and Sean McMahon could see the field throughout the season as key depth comes into play.
GOALKEEPER
A three-way battle ensues in net as the Jaspers looks to replace Team MVP and stalwart Jon Fiorillo. Senior incumbent Matt Solomito will battle two new faces to Riverdale in Rich Akapnitis and William Murphy for the chance to stand between the pipes. Solomito, appeared in five games last season, making three starts and 34 saves. Akapnitis, comes to Manhattan as Hauppauge high school's all-time saves leader and has the ability to be a four-year starter for the Jaspers. Murphy, was last season's Team MVP at Sachem North high school and shows great quickness in the cage.
SCHEDULE
A 16-game regular season laden with perennial powerhouse opponents, including three nationally televised contests against the University of Denver, Air Force and Johns Hopkins University and five home games at Gaelic Park highlight the 2011 Manhattan men's lacrosse schedule. The Jaspers open the season on Feb. 20th, against Big East Conference foe Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. The following week, Manhattan travels to Moon Township, Pa. looking to avenge last year's home opening 13-12 loss to Robert Morris University on Feb. 26th. In two games broadcast on the CBS College Sports Network, Manhattan will face a pair of impressive rosters, starting with Air Force on March 5th and ending with Denver on March 6th. Possible their toughest opponent on the agenda, the Jaspers continue their tour of the perpetual top 25 with a trip to Baltimore, Md. on March 9th, as they face one of the country's best in Johns Hopkins for the second consecutive year. The game will air on ESPNU. Battle tested and back to familiar turf, Sacred Heart University comes to town on March 12th for a one-game homestand, before Manhattan heads to Staten Island, N.Y. the following Wednesday to meet Wagner College on March 16th. Taking a break from MAAC play, McIntee's squad will swing south on I-95 towards Philadelphia for a March 19th matchup with their second Big East opponent, Villanova University. Staying on away soil, the team will continue to don their visiting uniforms as they kickoff Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at
the Virginia Military Institute on March. 26th. Flipping the calendar to April, Manhattan welcomes first-year MAAC lacrosse member Jacksonville University for an April 2nd home meeting before a grueling three-game away stretch against Hofstra University, the University of Detroit and Siena College. Beginning in Hempstead, N.Y., the lacrosse program will be pushed to their limits as they wage war with the powerful Pride on April 5th, a game televised on FIOS 1 digital cable television. The duel will be followed by back-to-back crucial conference games against the Titans in Detroit, Mich. and the Saints in Loudonville, N.Y., on April 9th and 16th respectively. With their travel days behind them, the team returns to the Bronx for a two-game conference slate against New York State adversaries to end the regular season. Marist College comes in for an April 23rd date with Canisius College following suit the following Saturday, April 30th. The game against the Griffins has been designated as "Senior Day" and will be set for a 7 p.m. face-off. Riding a three-year appearance streak, Manhattan will look to continue postseason play at the 2011 MAAC Lacrosse Championships, held at Canisius College from May 6th-8th. The top four teams in the conference will participate in the tournament, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Lacrosse Championships.

Now in his 14th season as head coach, Tim McIntee has been at the forefront of the successful turnaround and development of the Manhattan men’s lacrosse program. The all-time winningest coach in program history, McIntee has a 85-114 record as mentor of the Jaspers, including a 56-45 mark in MAAC games. Having inherited a fledgling program in the fall of 1997, McIntee wasted no time in establishing the Jaspers as a perennial contender in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. In the spring of 1998, the head coach’s first season on the Manhattan sideline, McIntee’s team started its MAAC run with conference wins over Siena and Providence. Under his guidance, the team has qualified for the four-team MAAC Tournament seven times (2000, 2002, 2004-05 and 2008-10). McIntee’s work came to complete fruition in 2002, as his men’s lacrosse squad went on to accomplish a feat never before reached by any other Manhattan team— the Jaspers went undefeated (9-0) in conference play en route to capturing the program’s first-ever MAAC Championship. Manhattan posted a thrilling 9-8 win over Mount St. Mary’s in the MAAC Championship Game to earn the conference’s first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Manhattan dropped a 12-7 decision to a powerful Georgetown squad. For his efforts, McIntee was named MAAC Coach of the Year in 2002. The 11 victories that season were the most in team history. The 2004 team finished the regular season at 7-6 and entered the MAAC Championships with a 5-3 conference record and the number four seed in the fourteam tournament. In the semifinals, he Jaspers stunned top-seeded Marist, which entered the postseason with a perfect 8-0 mark during the MAAC regular season. Despite falling to Providence in the final game, Manhattan concluded a season in which they made the playoffs for the second time in three years, a first for the program. After reaching to the MAAC Tournament again in 2005 (its second straight appearance and fourth in six years), Manhattan returned to the tournament in 2008 following a three-year absence. After losing their first two conference games, the Jaspers rallied to win five of their last six and clinched a postseason berth with back-to-back doubleovertime home victories over Saint Joseph’s and VMI to end the regular season.
In 2010, McIntee guided Manhattan to their third consecutive MAAC Tournament appearance, the longest streak in program history. Despite falling to Mount St. Mary’s 10-6 in the semifinal game, the Jaspers finished with an impressive five conference victories for the third straight season A season to remember, 2009 was among the best in program history. The 2009 season was one of the best in program history. The Jaspers qualified for the MAAC Tournament for the second straight year and knocked off Mount St. Mary’s in the semifinals to advance to the MAAC Championship Game for the first time since 2004. Despite a loss to Siena in the title game, Manhattan’s 10 wins in 2009 were the second-most in program history. McIntee was honored as MAAC Coach of the Year for the first time in 2000, as the Jaspers qualified for the MAAC Tournament for the first time and advanced to the finals, where they lost to Saint Joseph’s. The Jaspers finished that season with an 8-9 overall record after going 5-4 in the MAAC during the regular season. In the summer of 2002, McIntee was selected as a coach for Team Ireland at the 2002 World Games. He was the offensive coordinator and man-up coach. The Irish team went 6-2 with key victories over Korea, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Italy. McIntee joined Manhattan after a stellar playing and coaching career on the collegiate, professional and international level. While at C.W. Post, McIntee was a three-time NCAA All-American and a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse as a midfielder. McIntee went on to play with Team USA in the 1990 World Championships. He starred in the professional ranks as a member of the New York Saints of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League. In seven seasons with the Saints (1990-97), McIntee recorded 97 points (46 goals, 51 assists), which ranks him among the all-time leading scorers in franchise history. Prior to Manhattan, McIntee was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at St. John’s University from 199396. He also coached the boys’ lacrosse team at Syosset High School in 1996 and 1997 and coached East Islip High School from 1994-1997. McIntee currently lives in the Bronx with his wife, Deirdre, and three-year-old daughter, Emily.

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009. Dr. O’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. As dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of Arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200. Before coming to New York, Dr. O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide Honors Program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, Dr. O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English. As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. O’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publications and
lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participation in the mission of Catholic higher education. A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and Honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American Literature and Language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors. Dr. O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in Leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior English major at Fordham).

A 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes enters his 23rd year as director of athletics. Since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids (four women, four men). METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 30th year of competition during the 2010-2011 academic year. The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun. Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Robert Morris University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2010-2011 academic year. The MAAC Basketball Championships return to the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. for 2011, with Springfield’s MassMutual Center preparing to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTS
In June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for student-athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena – and three associate members – Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena. In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is made up of three MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as three associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova and Wagner. Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the
spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC Championship, while Robert Morris will begin competition in the spring of 2011. In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members – Albany, Boston University and Hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010.
ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS
The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its studentathletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and the Sun National Bank Center. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., Athletic Complex at Loyola, where both the men’s and women’s soccer championships will be contested in the fall of 2010, and Waterfront Park in Trenton, home of the 2011 MAAC Baseball Championship. This year, the MAAC will take its volleyball championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course. In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 75 NIT appearances and 45 NCAA appearances. In addition, Fairfield represented the league last season in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament while the Fairfield women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. Last fall, the No. 11 Iona men’s cross country team finished tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship race, extended the Gaels’ streak to eight straight Top 10 national finishes. Canisius softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan and Marist baseball and Loyola soccer and lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage. The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc. to sponsor the MAAC web page. Launched in November 1999, www.maacsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, multimedia content and an online merchandise store. The MAAC President for the 2010-2011 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. The Vice-President is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s College.
