SEASON OUTLOOK

Moving forward will be a big theme this year for the Manhattan College men’s soccer program. Back for his second year at the helm, head coach Ashley Hammond is looking to use the bright spots from 2010 as the foundation for a successful 2011 campaign. A group of 12 fresh faces, highlighted by 10 freshman, will be the cornerstone as the Jaspers try to move closer to their goal of fighting for the MAAC Championship and a place in the NCAA Tournament. Despite the struggles of last season, the coaching staff is high on the possibilities of what this fall will bring. “We had an incredibly tough opening year as coaches and players through the transition of the roster, youth and injuries,” Hammond said. “We hope that by adding depth to the squad and ensuring players are more prepared physically and emotionally for the year ahead, we will step forward and Jasper’s Soccer will regain the success it once had.” The core of returning players is highlighted by senior captain Christopher Holihan. Holihan, a senior defender, sat out the majority of last season but is healthy and M A N H A T T A N

ready to reclaim his spot as the anchor of the back line. A “true leader in every sense”, Holihan’s experience will help a defensive group that is the most veteran on the team. “Chris is devoted to being a better player and reaching a higher level,” noted Hammond. “What separates him is his genuine care for teammates. He is the type of person you can count on and our young squad will need that across the board.” Looking to provide the offensive spark for the Jaspers will be assistant team captain Daniel Festa. A sophomore midfielder, Festa is top returning shooter having put 25 shots on net in his rookie season. A “dynamic, technical midfielder” his aggressive attitude and unique skill set will be a key aspect to an offense that is filled with youth and promise. “Daniel had a wonderful 1st year at the school,” says Hammond. “He played every minute defiant, patient, and determined to drive this program to success. Joining Holihan in the defensive third will be a handful of returning players that gained valuable experience in tough season. Juniors CJ Dragovich and Isiah Millington will help in leadership rolls for the green and white. C O L L E G E

M E N ’ S

In his first season on the field, Dragovich played in every game making 11 starts along the way. Millington will look to see more starts after playing in fifteen matches in his sophomore season. Second year players Sam Howard, Jake Donowick, and Erik Montinard add to the depth of the Jasper’s with each having played in double-digit contests their freshman seasons. Joining them will be freshman Dennis Michalak. At 6’4”, the New York native provides a serious size mismatch on defense. Behind the defense, MAAC All-Rookie team Goalkeeper Chris Lands returns in net. The sophomore led the conference last year in saves with 80, and saves per game (5.33). Lands, who beat out two lettermen last season, will compete with Quinnipiac transfer George Ellis for time between the pipes. Ellis, a 6’4” keeper from England, played two years with the Bobcats before transferring to Riverdale. The offense will be looking for a major spark this year from an onslaught of newcomers and veteran talent. Joining assistant captain Festa in the midfield is junior Jose Armas and sophomore Carlo Giachino. Both players made double-digit appearances last season and provide veteran relief in the attacking front. Expected to help contribute in the middle of the field are freshmen Jake Scavetta, Andrew Santos, Reese Akers, Rob Tedesco, and Jonathan Segarra. Akers is no stranger to Jasper soccer as his step-brother, Sam Howard, is a sophomore on this year’s team. Other newcomers that will be asked to produce early include midfield/forward combos such as John Paul Veliz, Jason Iannone, and Lucas Pilar da Silva. “It’s tough to separate any of our newcomers as they all bring a different quality and impact on our program,” head coach Ashley Hammond said of his new players. “We have players coming in from England, Brazil, New Zealand, but have also recruited some top talent from USS Development Academy programs at Albertson, Matchfit Academy and Texas Rush.” On the attacking front, a high powered group brings high expectations for a team

SEASON OUTLOOK that struggled scoring in 2010. “We invested heavily into the forward area of our team after we analyzed our needs and we will be adding an international flavor to our attack in 2011,” said Hammond. “Last year we played the last few games with no recognized forward and this was evident on our stats. We have remedied this now.” Competing to be that top scoring threat is senior Deia Nassar. Coming off an injury plagued year, he will face tough opposition from Saint John’s transfer Trevor Chiduku. Chiduku, who will be a senior this year, has NCAA Tournament experience winning the BIG EAST last year. Along with the two seniors will be freshman Tommy Amos. Amos, a distant cousin of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, played on the Wigan Athletics Reserve team back in England.

THE FALL 2011 SCHEDULE The Jaspers road to the MAAC Championships begins with a lengthy road trip that kicks off at Villanova on August 26th. They will then travel upstate to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army (August 29) before going cross-country to play San Diego State (September 9) and San Diego (September 11). Manhattan will open up their home season on September 16th when they host Saint Francis of New York at Gaelic Park before going back on the road to face Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck, N.J. (September 23). They will then play three straight games at home including the conference opener. First, Bryant University will visit Riverdale on September 25th, followed by cross-borough rival Fordham (September 30). “We took another tough out of conference schedule as we believe that in order to win the MAAC you need to play and compete against teams ranked higher than the top team in our conference,” Hammond said. “All teams go to the MAAC championship this year but we want to go as number 1.” The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference slate begins at home for the Jaspers on October 2nd as they host defending conference champs, St. Peter’s. The green M A N H A T T A N

and white will take a quick step out of conference and travel to Storrs, Conn. to play perennial power UCONN (October 4) before returning home to face Loyola (October 7) and Rider on October 9th. Mid-October finds a brief two game road set upstate with conference matches against Canisius (October 14) and Niagara (October 16). The Jaspers then face Siena on October 21st and Marist on October 23rd at home at 10 a.m. The regular season ends on the road against two top MAAC contenders in Fairfield (October 28) and pre-season number one Iona (October 30) before the C O L L E G E

MAAC Championships begin on November 3rd in Orlando, Fla. with the championship game being played on November 7th. This year, all 10 MAAC schools will qualify for the conference tournament with the champion earning an automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament.

METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 31st year of competition during the 2011-2012 academic year. The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun. Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University, VMI and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Robert Morris University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2011-2012 academic year. The MAAC Basketball Championships move to Springfield’s MassMutual Center to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC and Rider co-hosted the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2012 NCAA Rowing Championships at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.

The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its studentathletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and the Sun National Bank Center. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., Athletic Complex at Loyola, where the women’s soccer championship will be contested in the fall of 2011, and Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy, New York, home of the 2012 MAAC Baseball Championship. This year, the MAAC will take its men’s championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course. In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 77 NIT appearances and 47 NCAA appearances. In addition, Iona and Rider participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, with the Gaels advancing to the championship game. The Manhattan women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational, reaching the semifinal round of the tournament. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. In the fall of 2009, the No. 11 Iona men’s cross country team finished tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship race, extended the Gaels’ streak to eight straight Top 10 national finishes. Iona softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan baseball and Loyola lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage. The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc., now NeuLion, Inc., to design the MAAC web page. MAACSports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-todate contest results, live and on-demand video and an online merchandise store. The MAAC, in conjunction with NeuLion, launched an iPhone app in February 2011. The league is looking to expand its offerings with Android and iPod apps, scheduled for release during the 2011-12 academic year. The MAAC President for the 2011-2012 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. The Vice-President is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s College. Jim Paquette, Director of Athletics at Loyola University Maryland, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Theresa Berg, Associate Athletic Director/ Senior Woman Administrator at Niagara University will serve as Vice Chair.

MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTS In June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for studentathletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena – and three associate members – Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena. In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is currently made up of three MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as four associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova, VMI and Wagner. Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC Championship, while Robert Morris began competition in the spring of 2011. In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members – Albany, Boston University and Hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010.

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009. Dr. O’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. As dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of Arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200. Before coming to New York, Dr. O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide Honors Program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, Dr. O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English. As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. O’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill.
