2011 SEASON OUTLOOK This season, Sullivan will be used exclusively in the circle.

Senior Melissa Donnelly, a two-time First Team All-MAAC performer, led the Lady Jaspers in appearances (26), innings (137) and strikeouts (84) last season. Also Manhattan’s No. 3 hitter, Donnelly started all but one game at shortstop when she wasn’t pitching. She tied for the team lead with 12 doubles and placed second on the squad with 34 runs scored while hitting .319, belting four home runs and collecting 22 RBIs in 2010. Expect Donnelly to once again be in the lineup every day, at either pitcher or shortstop.

ERIKA SULLIVAN

When the Manhattan College softball team’s Class of 2011 first arrived on campus for the 2008 season, the Lady Jaspers were coming off a 4-42 campaign. Four short years later, that class has engineered a turnaround that saw Manhattan earn a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title for the first time in program history in 2009, then return to the MAAC Tournament last season. There’s just one thing remaining for this group to accomplish during its senior campaign: winning the MAAC championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history. This year’s team is well-equipped to achieve that goal. All 10 starters and 19 letterwinners from last season’s 25-23-1 squad return, and among that group, six have earned All-MAAC honors at least once.

PITCHERS

All three members of the Manhattan pitching staff have been All-MAAC performers, and the trio has alternated the team lead in wins during each of the past three seasons. Last season’s team leader in victories was senior Erika Sullivan, who was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week twice en route to a Second Team All-MAAC selection. Sullivan had 12 wins, four shutouts and a 2.48 ERA in 2010, but was unavailable during the MAAC Tournament because of an injury she suffered while playing second base.

The Lady Jaspers’ third pitcher is senior Ashley Rampino, who was used primarily in relief last season. A First Team All-MAAC and MAAC All-Tournament Team selection as a sophomore, Rampino picked up six victories in the circle and smashed four home runs at the plate in 2010. One of the top power hitters on the team, it will be tough to keep Rampino out of the lineup if she’s hitting consistently.

INFIELD

At first base, Head Coach Tom Pardalis is blessed with a pair of lefty-swinging seniors who were both starters last season. Jaci Rahey had one of the most spectacular offensive seasons in program history in 2010. She earned First Team All-MAAC and First Team All-Northeast Region honors after leading the Lady Jaspers in five different offensive categories. Rahey hit .409 with 10 home runs, 58 RBIs, 12 doubles and 56 hits. All of those totals rank among the top 10 on Manhattan’s all-time single-season lists, and she became just the second player in program history to crush double-digit home runs in one season. The Lady Jaspers’ clean-up hitter, she’ll split her time between first base and designated player.

was named First Team All-State after leading Newtown High School in Connecticut to the conference championship in 2010. A left-handed hitter, she earned First Team All-State honors as both a pitcher and a second baseman during her high school career. Babcock saw her playing time increase as the season went on in 2010, emerging as the full-time starter at second by the end of the year. She ended the season with a .321 batting average and put together an eight-game hitting streak from April 21-May 2. One of the more versatile players on the squad, Whitmore started games at three different positions last season, including 18 at second base. The Lady Jaspers’ starting shortstop will depend on who’s pitching. Donnelly will play short when not in the circle. A four-year starter, she’s appeared in 136 of Manhattan’s 142 games since arriving in Riverdale. On the days Donnelly is pitching, Babcock will likely be at shortstop. At third base, senior Nicole Michel had a sensational 2010 campaign at the plate. A Second Team All-MAAC and MAAC All-Tournament choice as a junior, she finished second on the team in batting average (.352), home runs (8), RBIs (30) and slugging percentage (.592) last season. Michel was named MAAC Player of the Week on May 3 and finished a triple shy of the cycle against Monmouth on April 27, blasting three homers in the doubleheader sweep.

The sure-handed Melissa Cascio will also see plenty of action at first base. Perhaps the best defensive infielder on the team, Cascio made just two errors and had a stellar .990 fielding percentage last season. Sullivan was the Lady Jaspers’ primary second baseman when not pitching last season, but with her moving into the circle full-time, the starting second base job is up for grabs. The three leading candidates to step into the role are freshman Kate Bowen, and sophomores Amanda Babcock and Jocelin Whitmore. Bowen

the Sunshine State before returning north for the Seton Hall Pirate Classic. The Lady Jaspers return home for a doubleheader with Columbia on March 24, then Lafayette comes to Gaelic Park two days later. Manhattan was picked to finish fourth in the MAAC Preseason Poll and starts conference play at Niagara and Canisius (the two teams that beat the Lady Jaspers in last season’s MAAC Tournament) on April 9-10. The Lady Jaspers’ first home conference twinbill is against Siena on April 16. Manhattan wraps up its home slate against Saint Peter’s on May 7 before concluding the regular season with a visit to defending MAAC champion Iona the following day. The top four teams in the final regular season standings will advance to the MAAC Championships from May 12-14 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Lady Jaspers are looking to advance to the MAAC Championships for the third consecutive season, something they haven’t done since making four straight appearances from 1993-96.

Junior Kelly Murray also figures prominently into the mix at third base. Murray started games at both third base and designated player last season and slammed two home runs. She also has the versatility to play both middle infield positions. At catcher, junior Carla Velasquez, the incumbent starter, will be pushed by sophomore Meghan McDevitt. The duo split time behind the plate last season, with Velasquez starting 29 games and McDevitt starting the other 20. Velasquez has the more dynamic bat of the two, while McDevitt is strong defensively. She didn’t commit an error in 77 defensive chances as a freshman. Another option at catcher is sophomore Heather Leone, who can also play first base and the outfield.

OUTFIELD

Senior Kristina Walraven has been the Lady Jaspers’ starting centerfielder and leadoff hitter from the moment she arrived in Riverdale. After a slow start, she rebounded to hit .314 with a careerhigh five homers in 2010. Walraven’s 19 extra-base hits were the second-most on the team, and she also swiped 10 bases. A two-time MAAC All-Tournament Team selection, Walraven enters her senior season among Manhattan’s all-time Top 10 in seven different offensive categories.

Senior Monica Evangelista and sophomore Jen Keller are the returning starters at the corner outfield positions. After seeing limited time during her first two seasons, Evangelista thrived in her first year as a full-time starter in 2010. Starting all but one game in left field, she hit .304 and tied for the team lead with two triples. Keller started 40 games in right field and committed just one error in 58 defensive chances. Manhattan’s remaining outfielders are some of the fastest members of the team. Sophomore Michelle Roemer was the Lady Jaspers’ top late-inning base running specialist in 2010, when she appeared in 28 contests and scored seven runs. Junior Amanda Berrios has the versatility to play all three outfield spots, but battled through injuries during each of her first two years in Riverdale. Sophomores Anna Gallacher and Megan Weaver are also viable options off the bench.

Tom Pardalis enters his second season as Manhattan's head softball coach. During his initial campaign at the helm in 2010, Pardalis led the Lady Jaspers to a 25-23-1 record and their second straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament appearance. The 25 wins were Manhattan's highest total since 2006, which was also the last time the Lady Jaspers finished above .500. In addition, the Lady Jaspers earned backto-back MAAC Tournament berths for the first time since 2004-05. A 38-year coaching veteran, Pardalis came to Manhattan after six seasons an assistant at Western Connecticut State University. He helped the Colonials win the 2007 ECAC Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. Also in 2008, he coached the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Year and four all-conference players. Prior to his time at Western Connecticut State, Pardalis was an assistant coach at MAAC rival Marist for three seasons. He worked with the Red Foxes' hitters and

outfielders, while also handling duties in recruiting, film work and scheduling. In 2006, Marist posted a 33-13 overall record en route to the MAAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. That season, the Red Foxes ranked eighth nationally in home runs per game, belting 47 in 46 contests. Marist also ranked 19th nationally in slugging percentage (.458) and 21st in earned run average (2.52) in 2006. Four Red Foxes earned All-MAAC honors that season, including both the MAAC Player of the Year and MAAC Pitcher of the Year. From 1992-2001, Pardalis was the head coach of the varsity softball team at New Fairfield High School in New Fairfield, Conn. New Fairfield won the 1999 Connecticut State Championship and produced six Division I softball players. Pardalis led the Rebels to four straight division championships (1993-96) and twice earned conference Coach of the Year honors (1994-95). He also guided three different club teams to the PONY Nationals. In 1997, he led the Connecticut Legacy to the state championship and a fifth-place finish at

the PONY Nationals in the under-14 division. He also led the under-16 Connecticut Crush to Nationals in 1998, and the under-18 Connecticut Tradition to the 1999 PONY Nationals. Pardalis spent the past 37 years teaching physical education and coaching in the Connecticut Public School system before retiring following the 2008-09 school year. He has also coached football, basketball and baseball during his career, and he was the varsity boy's basketball coach at Danbury High School from 1996-2009. Pardalis spent time as an assistant men's basketball coach at Western Connecticut State from 1992-96, helping the Colonials win the 1995 ECAC Championship and qualify for the 1996 NCAA Tournament. A 1972 graduate of Saint Leo College, Pardalis earned a master's degree from Western Connecticut State in 1978 and a degree in administration from Sacred Heart in 2002. He and his wife, Rosemary, have two children and two grandchildren.

Bridget Hurlman enters her second season as an assistant coach for the Lady Jaspers. She is also the assistant coach for the Manhattan volleyball team. A two-time All-MAAC selection at Marist, Hurlman served as team captain when the Red Foxes won the MAAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2006. Hurlman earned Second Team All-MAAC honors following both the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. In 2005, she started every game at either catcher or designated player and posted a .331 batting average. Hurlman also led the Red Foxes with seven home runs, 33 RBIs and a .569 slugging percentage that season. As a senior in 2006, Hurlman drew a team-high 22 walks and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. She also earned a place

on the MAAC All-Tournament Team, as the Red Foxes won their first-ever MAAC Championship. She began her coaching career as an assistant at SUNY Purchase in 2007. During her time at SUNY Purchase, she worked primarily with the pitchers and catchers, while assisting with offensive instruction. Hurlman was also involved in all other aspects of the program, including practice planning, budgeting, travel arrangements and recruiting. Also a certified athletic trainer, Hurlman is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. From September-December 2006, she worked as an athletic trainer at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, where she provided medical care to athletes of all ages in a variety of sports. From August 2007-May 2009, she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at St. John’s University, where

she worked primarily with the women’s cross country and track and field teams, as well as the men’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer squads. Hurlman is currently employed at the Frozen Ropes Baseball/Softball Training Facility in Elmsford, N.Y., where she is an instructor and assists with administrative duties. A three-time MAAC All-Academic selection, Hurlman graduated cum laude from Marist in 2006. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sports management from St. John’s. The daughter of Margaret and James Hurlman, she currently resides in Yonkers, N.Y.

METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 30th year of competition during the 2010-2011 academic year. The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun. Today, Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Robert Morris University and Sacred Heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany, Boston University and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2010-2011 academic year. The MAAC Basketball Championships return to the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. for 2011, with Springfield’s MassMutual Center preparing to host the 2012-2014 championships. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTS

In June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for student-athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools -Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena – and three associate members – Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena. In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is made up of three MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as three associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova and Wagner. Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the

spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC Championship, while Robert Morris will begin competition in the spring of 2011. In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members – Albany, Boston University and Hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010.

ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS

The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its studentathletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the IZOD Center, HSBC Arena, Times Union Center, the Arena at Harbor Yard and the Sun National Bank Center. The other MAAC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., Athletic Complex at Loyola, where both the men’s and women’s soccer championships will be contested in the fall of 2010, and Waterfront Park in Trenton, home of the 2011 MAAC Baseball Championship. This year, the MAAC will take its volleyball championship to Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course. In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have made a total of 75 NIT appearances and 45 NCAA appearances. In addition, Fairfield represented the league last season in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament while the Fairfield women participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The MAAC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. Last fall, the No. 11 Iona men’s cross country team finished tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship race, extended the Gaels’ streak to eight straight Top 10 national finishes. Canisius softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan and Marist baseball and Loyola soccer and lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage. The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc. to sponsor the MAAC web page. Launched in November 1999, www.maacsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, multimedia content and an online merchandise store. The MAAC President for the 2010-2011 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., the President of Fairfield University. The Vice-President is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s College. Ed McLaughlin, Director of Athletics at Niagara University, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Karin Torchia, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Rider University will serve as Vice Chair.

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhattan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009. Dr. O’Donnell comes to Manhattan from Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. As dean of Fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of Arts and Sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200. Before coming to New York, Dr. O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide Honors Program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, Dr. O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English. As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Dr. O’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publications and

lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participation in the mission of Catholic higher education. A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and Honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American Literature and Language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors. Dr. O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in Leuven, Belgium), and Will (a senior English major at Fordham).

A 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes enters his 23rd year as director of athletics. Since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids (four women, four men). Additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason National Invitational Tournaments (NIT). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 26 student-athletes have received All-America honors for both athletic and academic achievements. Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation. A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A. from City University in Seattle, Washington. As an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and

offensive end. He spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969. Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tournament appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972). In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, Byrnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association, at one time the sponsoring body of the NIT. He also served on the NCAA Championship Committee in 1999-2000. He is currently the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on Athletic Administration, as well as a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Byrnes resides in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, along with his wife, Rosemary. He is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Manhattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.
