MAAC Tournament History

Manhattan is one of the six founding members of the MAAC which was established in 1980. Since the inaugural season of competition in 1981-82, the Jaspers are 10-14 in the MAAC Tournament. Manhattan won its only title in 2006 at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y.

Remembering 2006

In 2006, the Manhattan College baseball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history and first visit in 49 years. The Jaspers cruised through the MAAC Tournament notching three straight wins, the first coming over #3 Rider, before back-to-back victories against #1 LeMoyne to earn a spot in the 64-team NCAA field. Manhattan was sent to Lincoln, Neb. for an opening round contest with top-seeded and host school Nebraska on June 2, 2006. After a grueling battle with Cornhuskersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; starter and current New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain, the Jaspers escaped with a 4-1 upset. Manhattanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chris Cody delivered a complete game pitching effort, while Matt Rizzotti and John Fitzpatrick blasted back-toback home runs to secure the victory.

The Manhattan baseball team delivered another landmark regular-season as the Jaspers reached the 30-win plateau for the sixth straight year under head coach Kevin Leighton. The Jaspers won 20 MAAC contests to finish with the highest conference win percentage in program history (.909). It tied for the second highest in the MAAC dating back to 1989 and is the highest since the league restructured to a single division in 2000. Most notably, Manhattan won its third MAAC Regular-Season Championship in the last four years. During the 2011 regular-season, Manhattan held the longest active win streak in NCAA Division I winning 10 straight games from March 26 to April 10. The Jaspers were also nearly unbeatable at home recording an 11-1 ledger at Van Cortlandt Park. At one point, Manhattan won 11 straight home contests dating back to 2010, which was tied for the fifth longest active home winning streak in the country.

The Jaspers road to success began on February 25 in Cullowhee, N.C. against Western Carolina when Manhattan cruised to an 11-6 season opening victory over the Catamounts. Jaspers’ senior slugger Chad Salem gave a preview of what everyone could expect out of him in 2011 when he launched towering home runs in his first two at bats of the season. Salem later became the program’s career home run and RBI leader.

In March, the Jaspers earned several key victories, including a 5-2 win over Notre Dame on March 4 in Rock Hill, S.C. at the Coca-Cola Classic hosted by Winthrop University. Salem earned MAAC Player of the Week honors after batting .611 over four games that week, which included a perfect 5-for-5 performance against the Irish.

Manhattan picked up its seventh win over a Big East opponent in the last four seasons on March 16 when the Jaspers defeated Seton Hall 6-3 in South Orange, N.J. Sophomore John Soldinger was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week after recording the save against the Pirates. On March 28 Soldinger was a repeat winner of conference Pitcher of the Week award when he set a career-high 10 strikeouts in a complete game victory at Siena. The Jaspers three game sweep of the Saints were the first victories of 17 straight league wins. Additionally, the Jaspers success in Loudonville on March 26 & 27 gave Leighton the milestone victories to advance to second place all-time on the Jaspers’ coaching wins list. Manhattan swept its second straight conference series against Fairfield on April 2 & 3 by outscoring the Stags 15-4 over the three game set. Jaspers’ senior outfielder Mike McCann and junior pitcher Mike Giordano were recognized by the MAAC for their superb play. McCann garnered Player of the Week honors after batting .500 with six RBI over the week, while Giordano was tabbed Pitcher of the Week setting a career-high with nine strikeouts in a 3-1 victory over Fairfield.

Manhattan took down Saint Peter’s in three straight games in Jersey City, before sweeping back-to-back home series with Marist and Canisius in mid-April. Salem was named MAAC Player of the Week and Giordano took home Pitcher of the Week honors on April 18 for their efforts lifting Manhattan over the Red Foxes. Sophomore Eric Luksis was selected MAAC Pitcher of the Week eight days later after delivering his top performance of the year with a complete game shutout against Canisius when he posted seven strikeouts. Senior outfielder Mark Onorati became Manhattan’s career hits leader on April 13 at Columbia to surpass former Jasper standout Kevin Nieto for the top spot. Onorati also moved to the top of the Jaspers’ career runs and career doubles list in 2011.

Manhattan won its 11th straight home contest on May 3 with an 8-0 rout of cross-Bronx rival Fordham. Senior first baseman Austin Sheffield joined classmates McCann, Onorati and Salem on the 12 member 200-hit list.

The Jaspers won their conference series at Niagara by sweeping the doubleheader on May 7, before dropping their first MAAC contest on May 8 falling 5-4 to the Purple Eagles in 11 innings. Luksis was recognized as MAAC Pitcher of the Week for his complete game shutout at Niagara helping Manhattan to a 4-0 victory in game two.

Manhattan split its doubleheader with Rider on May 14 before the final game of the series was cancelled due to rain. The Jaspers went out on a high note over the final conference weekend by sweeping its three game series at Iona on May 20 and 21. Soldinger earned his team leading ninth win of the year, while Luksis and Giordano hit seven wins apiece in tune up starts for the 2011 MAAC Tournament.

2011 MAAC Tournament Field #2 Rider (1-1)

Manhattan split its regular-season series with Rider as the rubber match was washed out due to rain showers and poor field conditions at Van Cortlandt Park. The Jaspers and Broncs each won a game in their doubleheader on May 14 as Rider took the first contest 8-4 and Manhattan earned a 3-2 victory in game two. The Broncs snapped Manhattan’s 11 game home win streak , the fifth longest active streak in NCAA Division I at the time and it was the only loss Manhattan experienced in Riverdale. The Jaspers dug themselves a three run deficit in game one that it could not completely rebound from after an error plagued first inning. It was the Jaspers first loss at Van Cortlandt Park since May 20, 2010. Jaspers’ starting pitcher John Soldinger pitched 7 1/3 innings and yielded only two earned runs and six hits, going along with two strikeouts. Broncs’ senior Mike Thomas earned the win by pitching seven innings with eight strikeouts, while first baseman Mason Heyne drove in three of Rider’s runs. Manhattan’s offense in game one was led by red-shirt sophomore catcher Ramon Ortega who finished with two hits and drove in two runs. In game two, Manhattan rallied behind sophomore pitcher Eric Luksis to earn the 3-2 victory. Luksis finished with eight strikeouts and allowed only one earned run in a complete game effort. The Jaspers could not find a hit against Rider starter Nate Eppley until the fourth inning when senior third baseman Chad Salem hit the fourth triple of his career with two outs to spark a three run rally. Jaspers’ senior first baseman Austin Sheffield knocked in Salem with a RBI single, and then senior right fielder Mike McCann’s double set the table for Ortega’s game breaking two RBI opposite field single.

#3 Siena (3-0)

Manhattan senior right fielder Mike McCann hit .500 (6-for-12) and drove in four runs over three starts to help lift the Jaspers to a series sweep at Siena on March 26 and 27. Manhattan took 4-1 and 3-2 victories in the doubleheader, and then earned a 5-3 win in the third contest. Jaspers’ sophomore John Soldinger pitched a complete game in the first contest, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts en route to a 4-1 triumph. Soldinger retired the first 12 Siena batters in order. McCann knocked in one of the Jaspers’ runs, red-shirt sophomore Ramon Ortega had two doubles with a RBI and freshman second baseman Yoandry Galan contributed a RBI single to the effort. In game two, Jaspers junior starter Mike Giordano retired 15 of his first 16 batters faced and finished with five strikeouts in the 3-2 win. Manhattan opened the scoring in the fifth inning by posting two runs when Galan scored on a passed ball and then McCann delivered a RBI double. McCann knocked in the decisive run with a RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. Then in game three, Jasper seniors Mark Onorati and Chad Salem hit home runs, while freshman starter Jared Hirschberg pitched six strong innings helping Manhattan earn a 5-3 victory. McCann and sophomore Nick Camastro also drove in one run apiece for Manhattan to complete the series sweep. Jaspers’ junior left hander Matt Jordan pitched a hitless final three innings to record the save. Jordan struck out three batters and yielded only one walk.

#4 Canisius (2-0)

Manhattan swept a doubleheader with Canisius on April 22 before the third contest of the series was cancelled due to heavy rain which created poor field conditions. Jaspers’ senior first baseman Austin Sheffield hit .500 against the Golden Griffs helping Manhattan to a 4-3 and 1-0 victories at Van Cortlandt Park. In game one, Jaspers’ sophomore John Soldinger pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters en route to a 4-3 victory. Manhattan scored all four runs in the first inning with the offensive surge featuring sophomore Anthony Vega’s two-RBI double. In game two, Sheffield launched a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the Jaspers to a 1-0 victory. Jaspers’ sophomore pitcher Eric Luksis outdueled Golden Griffs’ starter Shane Davis, who entered the contest a perfect 6-0 over his career against Manhattan. Luksis pitched a complete game, recorded seven strikeouts and was hitless through the first three innings of the seven inning affair. Davis allowed five hits and struck out four batters in the loss.

Manhattan Jaspers Baseball Nine Straight

The Manhattan College baseball team secured its ninth consecutive MAAC Tournament bid, and enters the 2011 Championships looking for the program’s second MAAC title in the last six seasons. The Jaspers made their first MAAC Tournament appearance in 2003, and have advanced to the championship round in three of the last eight seasons. Manhattan earned its first league title in 2006 under the direction of head coach Kevin Leighton during his inaugural season at the helm.

What’s a Jasper?

The unique nickname of Manhattan College’s athletic teams, the Jaspers, comes from one of the College’s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C., who served at the College in the late 19th century.

One of the greatest achievements of Brother Jasper was that he brought the then little-known sport of baseThe Manhattan College baseball team recorded its sixth consecutive 30-win season, all coming under the direction of sixth ball to Manhattan College and became the team’s first year head coach Kevin Leighton. It marks the first time in pro- coach. The “Big Four”

The “Big Four”, Manhattan’s senior position players: Mike McCann, Mark Onorati, Austin Sheffield and Chad Salem, will go down as one of the most accomplished groups of hitters in program history. Each senior is a member of the program’s illustrious 200-hit club, a feat only 12 players in program history have accomplished. The “Big Four” have combined for 981 hits over their careers at Manhattan and Onorati became the Jaspers’ all-time hits leader (283) earlier this season. Onorati also set the career doubles (68) and runs (232) records. Salem is the program’s career home runs (42) and RBI (214) leader. McCann ranks third all-time for career RBI (161) and home runs (31), and he is fourth in career hits (229). Sheffield boasts a career .311 batting average joining McCann (.363), Onorati (.358) and Salem (.353) who are all .300+ career hitters. Sheffield is also ranked sixth all-time with 149 RBI. The “Big Four” along with senior pitcher Rob Ardino have contributed to 127 wins at Manhattan, three MAAC Regular-Season Championships and they hold a 72-22 (.766) conference record over their four seasons in Riverdale.

During one particularly warm and humid day when Manhattan College was playing a semi-pro baseball team called the Metropolitans, Brother Jasper noticed the Manhattan students were becoming restless and edgy as Manhattan came to bat in the seventh inning of a close game. To relieve the tension, Brother Jasper called time-out and told the students to stand up and stretch for a few minutes until the game resumed. Since the College annually played the New York Giants in the late 1880’s and into the 1890’s at the old Polo Grounds, the Manhattan College practice of the “ seventh inning stretch” spread into the major leagues, where it has now become a time-honored custom practiced by millions of fans annually.

200 on the Horizon

Manhattan sixth year head coach Kevin Leighton is on the verge of another landmark in his short time in Riverdale. Leighton is three wins away from recording his milestone 200th career victory as the Jaspers’ head coach. Leighton is second in Manhattan baseball history for career coaching wins only behind Dave Curren (264-292-11, 1950-79), and he is third alltime for wins in Manhattan College Athletic history. Former men’s basketball coach Ken Norton is the winningest coach with a 310-205 (1946-68) career record. Leighton has won 30+ games in each of his six years at the helm, including a baseball program record 35 wins in 2007 & 2009. He also boasts a 110-32 (.775) MAAC record.
