Remembering 2006

In 2006, the Manhattan College baseball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history and first visit in 49 years. The Jaspers cruised through the MAAC Tournament notching three straight wins, the first coming over #3 Rider, before back-to-back victories against #1 LeMoyne to earn a spot in the 64-team NCAA field. Manhattan was sent to Lincoln, Neb. for an opening round contest with top-seeded and host school Nebraska on June 2, 2006. After a grueling battle with Cornhuskers’ starter and current New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain, the Jaspers escaped with a 4-1 upset. Manhattan’s Chris Cody delivered a complete game pitching effort, while Matt Rizzotti and John Fitzpatrick blasted back-to-back home runs to secure the victory.

At just 31 years of age, Manhattan head coach Kevin Leighton has guided the Jaspers to unprecedented heights. The two-time MAAC Coach of the Year (2009 & 2011) earned his milestone 200th career coaching victory with the Jaspers 5-1 win over Siena in the 2011 MAAC Championship Game on May 28. Leighton, who is the second winningest coach in Jasper baseball history and the third winningest in Manhattan Athletic history, has led the Jaspers to two MAAC Championships, three MAAC Regular-Season Championships, and most notably he put Manhattan in the national spotlight advancing to the NCAA Regional Final in 2006.

Leighton was named the 24th head coach in team history on August 18, 2006 after serving four years as the Jaspers’ assistant coach. Leighton has mentored 52 All-MAAC recipients since joining the program in 2002, including 32 First Team selections. During his tenure, four Jaspers were named MAAC Pitcher of the Year, two earned MAAC Rookie of the Year honors, one was selected MAAC Player of the Year and one was recognized as MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year. Eleven players Leighton has coached have advanced to the professional ranks, and two currently play within a MLB organization.

Since taking the reins in Riverdale, Leighton has built Manhattan into a regional power in the Northeast. He has guided the Jaspers to four wins over nationally ranked opponents since 2006 and in the last four years Leighton has posted seven victories against Big East competition.

Leighton had a standout four-year career as a catcher at Seton Hall University. He helped the Pirates to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances in 2000 and 2001. In 2001, he helped guide the Pirates to the Big East Championship, the program’s first title since 1987. He earned his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education at Seton Hall in 2001. He completed his master’s degree in administration and leadership in education at Manhattan in 2005. Leighton was drafted out of high school by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1997.

The Manhattan baseball team delivered another landmark year as the Jaspers won their second MAAC Championship and reached the 30-win plateau for the sixth straight year under head coach Kevin Leighton. The Jaspers won 20 MAAC contests to finish with the highest conference win percentage in program history (.909). It tied for the second highest in the MAAC dating back to 1989 and is the highest since the league restructured to a single division in 2000. Most notably, Manhattan won its third MAAC Regular-Season Championship in the last four years.

During the 2011 regular-season, Manhattan held the longest active win streak in NCAA Division I winning 10 straight games from March 26 to April 10. The Jaspers were also nearly unbeatable at home recording an 11-1 ledger at Van Cortlandt Park. At one point, Manhattan won 11 straight home contests dating back to 2010, which was tied for the fifth longest active home winning streak in the country.

The Jaspers road to success began on February 25 in Cullowhee, N.C. against Western Carolina when Manhattan cruised to an 11-6 season opening victory over the Catamounts. Jaspers’ senior slugger Chad Salem gave a preview of what everyone could expect out of him in 2011 when he launched towering home runs in his first two at bats of the season. Salem later became the program’s career home run and RBI leader.

In March, the Jaspers earned several key victories, including a 5-2 win over Notre Dame on March 4 in Rock Hill, S.C. at the Coca-Cola Classic hosted by Winthrop University. Salem earned MAAC Player of the Week honors after batting .611 over four games that week, which included a perfect 5-for-5 performance against the Irish.

Manhattan picked up its seventh win over a Big East opponent in the last four seasons on March 16 when the Jaspers defeated Seton Hall 6-3 in South Orange, N.J. Sophomore John Soldinger was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week after recording the save against the Pirates. On March 28 Soldinger was a repeat winner of conference Pitcher of the Week award when he set a career-high 10 strikeouts in a complete game victory at Siena. The Jaspers three game sweep of the Saints were the first victories of 16 straight league wins. Additionally, the Jaspers success in Loudonville on March 26 & 27 gave Leighton the milestone victories to advance to second place all-time on the Jaspers’ coaching wins list. Manhattan swept its second straight conference series against Fairfield on April 2 & 3 by outscoring the Stags 15-4 over the three game set. Jaspers’ senior outfielder Mike McCann and junior pitcher Mike Giordano were recognized by the MAAC for their superb play. McCann garnered Player of the Week honors after batting .500 with six RBI over the week, while Giordano was tabbed Pitcher of the Week after posting nine strikeouts in a 3-1 victory over Fairfield.

Manhattan took down Saint Peter’s in three straight games in Jersey City, before sweeping back-to-back home series with Marist and Canisius in mid-April. Salem was named MAAC Player of the Week and Giordano took home Pitcher of the Week honors on April 18 for their efforts lifting Manhattan over the Red Foxes. Sophomore Eric Luksis was selected MAAC Pitcher of the Week eight days later after delivering his top performance of the year with a complete game shutout against Canisius when he posted seven strikeouts. Senior outfielder Mark Onorati became Manhattan’s career hits leader on April 13 at Columbia to surpass former Jasper standout Kevin Nieto for the top spot. Onorati also moved to the top of the Jaspers’ career runs and career doubles list in 2011. Manhattan won its 11th straight home contest on May 3 with an 8-0 rout of cross-Bronx rival Fordham. Senior first baseman Austin Sheffield joined classmates McCann, Onorati and Salem on the 12 member 200-hit list.

The Jaspers won their conference series at Niagara by sweeping the doubleheader on May 7, before dropping their first MAAC contest on May 8 falling 5-4 to the Purple Eagles in 11 innings. Luksis was recognized as MAAC Pitcher of the Week for his complete game shutout at Niagara helping Manhattan to a 4-0 victory in game two. Manhattan split its doubleheader with Rider on May 14 before the final game of the series was cancelled due to rain. The Jaspers went out on a high note over the final conference weekend by sweeping its three game series at Iona on May 20 and 21. Soldinger earned his ninth win of the year, while Luksis and Giordano hit seven wins apiece in tune up starts for the 2011 MAAC Tournament.

The Jaspers began the MAAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed against their perennial nemesis Canisius, the team that eliminated them from the postseason in each of the previous three seasons. With Manhattan trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, sophomore catcher Ramon Ortega belted an RBI single to tie the game. Then in the bottom of the ninth, junior first baseman Matt Troisi stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and the score still knotted at 2-2. Troisi drew a walk, knocking in sophomore outfielder Anthony Vega with the winning run. Soldinger tossed a complete game to earn the victory. Manhattan then moved on to face third-seeded Siena for the right to move on to the MAAC Championship Game. The Jaspers built a 5-2 lead after six innings before a five-run eighth put the Saints in front 7-5. Manhattan got one run back on Ortega’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. After freshman reliever Jacob Marchus worked around a runner on third, nobody out jam in the top of the ninth, Onorati led off the bottom half of the frame with a double off the left field wall. He moved to third on a bunt by sophomore shortstop Nick Camastro, then Salem drew a walk. With two down, Sheffield sent a grounder towards third. However, the throw was short and Sheffield collided with the Siena first baseman. The ball rolled into foul territory and Salem hustled all the way from first to tally the winning run. With that win, the Jaspers advanced to the MAAC Championship Game, where they met Siena again. Freshman second baseman Yoandry Galan provided the offense with a two-run single in the bottom of the second. Manhattan added three more runs in the third on RBI hits from Sheffield and sophomore Kyle Murphy, as well as an Ortega sacrifice fly. That was plenty of runs for Giordano, who was masterful on the mound. He allowed just one unearned run and three hits while notching a career-high 13 strikeouts to earn Tournament MVP honors. Fittingly, Giordano’s final pitch in the complete game victory was a called third strike, as Manhattan advanced to its first NCAA Tournament since 2006 with a 5-1 win.

2011 NCAA Tournament Gainesville Regional Field #1 Florida (45-16)

Southeastern Conference champion Florida was awarded the No. 2 national seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament. After tying for the regular season conference title, the Gators earned the SEC Tournament crown with a 5-0 victory over Vanderbilt on Sunday. The Gators are led by sophomore catcher Mike Zunino, the SEC Player of the Year and a National Player of the Year candidate. Zunino enters the NCAA Tournament with a .367 batting average, 15 home runs and 59 RBIs. He also has a team-high 19 doubles and 63 runs scored. Junior outfielder Preston Tucker was also selected First Team All-SEC. Tucker has 10 homers and 54 RBIs to go along with a .308 average. Six Florida starters are hitting over .300 on the season, as the Gators boast a team batting average of .306. Sophomore left-hander Brian Johnson, who earned First Team All-SEC honors at designated hitter, has also started 15 games on the mound and compiled an 83 record. Sophomore Hudson Randall is 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA, while freshman Karsten Whitson has a 7-0 record and a team-high 74 strikeouts in 78.1 innings. Sophomore Austin Maddox has picked up five saves and two victories in 19 appearances out of the bullpen while also manning first base for the Gators.

#2 Miami (36-21)

Four-time National Champion Miami earned an at-large berth out of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Sophomore outfielder Zeke DeVoss, a 2009 Boston Red Sox draft pick, is Miami’s leading hitter. He has 67 hits, 55 runs scored and a .335 batting average. DeVoss has also swiped 32 bases. The Hurricanes’ top power threat is junior first baseman Rony Rodriguez. Rodriguez leads Miami with 12 home runs and 39 RBIs. Rodriguez has also belted a team-high 15 doubles. Junior outfielder Nathan Melendres was named Second Team All-ACC after hitting .322 with 57 hits, 36 runs scored, 13 doubles and 23 stolen bases. In addition, Melendres has committed just one error in 95 defensive chances. Freshman left-hander Bryan Radziewski paces the Miami pitching staff with a 9-2 record and 85 strikeouts in 84.2 innings. Sophomores Eric Whaley and Steven Ewing both have seven wins, while Whaley boasts a team-best ERA of 2.55. Junior closer Daniel Miranda has recorded 14 saves this season. The Hurricanes and Jaspers met twice in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, with Miami winning both contests. The teams also played a three-game set to open the 2010 campaign, and Manhattan notched a 12-7 victory over the No. 10 Hurricanes in the series finale.

#3 Jacksonville (36-22)

After finishing second in the Atlantic Sun Conference during the regular season, Jacksonville was awarded an at-large NCAA Tournament berth. Sophomore first baseman Adam Brett Walker was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and is a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award. Walker’s impressive numbers include a .416 batting average, 96 hits, 65 runs scored, 13 home runs, 22 doubles, 72 RBIs, and a perfect 14-for-14 on the base paths. Sophomore outfielder Dan Gulbransen, who was also named First Team All-Atlantic Sun, has contributed 80 hits, 61 runs, 18 doubles, six homers, 49 RBIs and a .360 batting average, while freshman second baseman Taylor Ratliff leads the Dolphins with 24 stolen bases. Jacksonville is hitting .313 as a team, and seven Dolphin starters have batting averages over .300. Junior pitcher Steve Eagerton was also a First Team All-Atlantic Sun selection. Eagerton is 8-0 with a 4.23 ERA. Senior lefty Matthew Tomshaw leads the Dolphins with a 3.78 ERA to go along with an 8-3 record. Tomshaw has struck out 71 opposing hitters in 95.1 innings this season. Freshman closer Chris Anderson, a Second Team All-Atlantic Sun choice, has recorded 11 saves. He also boasts a 4-2 record in 33 appearances out of the bullpen.

Manhattan Jaspers Baseball Jaspers Meet Gators 201 1 Al l- MAAC

This will be the first-ever meeting between the baseball teams from Manhattan and Florida, but, it’s not the first time the Jaspers have faced the Gators in the NCAA Tournament. In 2004, Manhattan made its second straight appearance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and drew Florida in the first round. The 12th-seeded Jaspers pulled off the upset, knocking off the fifth-seeded Gators 75-60 in Raleigh, N.C.

Series with the ‘Canes

the then-No. 10 Hurricanes on Feb. 28, 2010. It was Manhattan’s firstever win over Miami. The Jaspers had been 0-5 against the 2011 MAAC Pitcher of the Year - John Soldinger Hurricanes previously, including a pair of losses in the 2006 NCAA 2011 MAAC Coach of the Year - Kevin Leighton Lincoln Regional that season. Miami eliminated Manhattan from the tournament with a 10-4 win in the regional final.

Jaspers in the Pros

A pair of key contributors from Manhattan’s last NCAA Tournament team (2006) are currently leaving their marks in the minor leagues. Matt Rizzotti was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round of the 2007 Draft and is currently a member of the Double-A Reading Phillies. Rizzotti was hitting .324 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs thru the first 49 games of the Eastern League season. Nick Derba ’07 was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 30th round in 2007. After starting the season with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals, Derba was recently promoted to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds.

The “Big Four”

The “Big Four”, Manhattan’s senior position players: Mike McCann, Mark Onorati, Austin Sheffield and Chad Salem, will go down as one of the most accomplished groups of hitters in program history. Each senior is a member of the program’s illustrious 200-hit club, a feat only 12 players in program history have accomplished. The “Big Four” have combined for 994 hits over their careers at Manhattan and Onorati became the Jaspers’ all-time hits leader (285) earlier this season. Onorati also set the career doubles (70) and runs (234) records. Salem is the program’s career home runs (42) and RBI (214) leader. McCann ranks third all-time for career RBI (161) and home runs (31), and he is fourth in career hits (232). Sheffield boasts a career .313 batting average joining McCann (.362), Onorati (.354) and Salem (.353) who are all .300+ career hitters. Sheffield is also ranked sixth all-time with 152 RBI. The “Big Four” along with senior pitcher Rob Ardino have contributed to 130 wins at Manhattan, the 2011 MAAC Championship, three MAAC Regular-Season Championships (2008, 2009, 2011) and they hold a 72-22 (.766) conference record over their four seasons in Riverdale.

One Win Away

The Jaspers enter the NCAA Tournament one win shy of tying the single-season school record. Manhattan previously won 35 games in 2007 and again in 2009. Manhattan has notched at least 31 victories in each of Head Coach Kevin Leighton’s six seasons at the helm. The Jaspers’ 5-1 triumph over Siena in the MAAC Championship Game was Leighton’s 200th as the team’s head coach, and he has moved into second place on the program’s all-time coaching wins list.

What’s a Jasper?

The unique nickname of Manhattan College’s athletic teams, the Jaspers, comes from one of the College’s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C., who served at the College in the late 19th century.

One of the greatest achievements of Brother Jasper was that he brought the then little-known sport of baseball to Manhattan College and became the team’s first coach. Since Brother was also the Prefect of Discipline, he supervised the student fans at Manhattan College baseball games while also directing the team itself.

During one particularly warm and humid day when Manhattan College was playing a semi-pro baseball team called the Metropolitans, Brother Jasper noticed the Manhattan students were becoming restless and edgy as Manhattan came to bat in the seventh inning of a close game. To relieve the tension, Brother Jasper called time-out and told the students to stand up and stretch for a few minutes until the game resumed. Since the College annually played the New York Giants in the late 1880’s and into the 1890’s at the old Polo Grounds, the Manhattan College practice of the “ seventh inning stretch” spread into the major leagues, where it has now become a time-honored custom practiced by millions of fans annually.

200-Win Club

Manhattan sixth year head coach Kevin Leighton won his milestone 200th career game in the Jaspers 5-1 MAAC Championship victory over Siena on May 28. Leighton is second in Manhattan baseball history for career coaching wins only behind Dave Curren (264-292-11, 1950-79), and he is third all-time for wins in Manhattan College Athletic history. Former men’s basketball coach Ken Norton is the winningest coach with a 310-205 (1946-68) career record. Leighton has won 30+ games in each of his six years at the helm, including a baseball program record 35 wins in 2007 & 2009. He also boasts a 110-32 (.775) MAAC record.
