2006 NCAA Regional Final
Manhattan advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 for the second time in program history and first in 49 years. Manhattan was sent to Lincoln, Neb. for an opening round contest with top-seeded and host school Nebraska on June 2, 2006. After a grueling battle with Cornhuskers’ starter and current New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain, the Jaspers escaped with a 4-1 upset. Manhattan’s Chris Cody delivered a complete game pitching effort, while Matt Rizzotti and John Fitzpatrick blasted back-to-back home runs to secure the victory. The Jaspers won their second NCAA Tournament game with a 6-4 triumph over San Francisco, before falling in the Regional Final to Miami. Manhattan is still the last MAAC team to win a NCAA Tournament game.
Manhattan Head Coach Jim Duffy One Wild Ride, 2012 MAAC Tournament First Season Seton Hall 1996 Coaching Record: 33-25
Jim Duffy was named the 25th head coach in Manhattan baseball history on August 24, 2011. He made a splash in his first year at the helm leading the Jaspers to their third MAAC Championship.
Duffy guided Manhattan to 33 wins, an 18-6 MAAC record to capture the Regular-Season title and he coached the Jaspers to the only undefeated home record in NCAA Division I in 2012. The Jaspers recorded a perfect 18-0 mark at Van Cortlandt Park. Duffy also mentored five All-MAAC First Team selections.
The Manhattan baseball team made history at the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships, becoming the first club in conference history to rally for the title after losing the first game of the tournament. The Jaspers won four games in three days to capture the program’s second straight league crown, the third since 2006.
Jaspers’ senior pitcher Taylor Sewitt earned MAAC Tournament Most Valuable Player honors, after delivering one of the more impressive performances in college baseball history. Sewitt pitched 22.0 scoreless innings over the last three days of the MAAC Tournament winning three games. Sewitt finished with 20 strikeouts, gave up only 10 hits and threw a total of 296 pitches.
Sewitt threw a complete game shutout May 25 as the Jaspers fought off elimination in a 1-0 victory over Fairfield. He recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts as the Jaspers scored the only run of the game in the first inning on a bases loaded walk to freshman third baseman Joe McClennan. It was a key rebound victory after falling to Rider on day one of the tournament, 6-4.
The Jaspers endured their most difficult day of the magical run on May 26 with Manhattan needing to fight off elimination twice. Manhattan began the day with another one run victory to eliminate Rider. Junior catcher Ramon Ortega delivered his fourth RBI of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning to send Manhattan off with a 6-5 victory. Freshman reliever Michael Scarinci gave the Jaspers four strong innings out of the bullpen in his second appearance of the tournament. Duffy began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma He pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings for the Jaspers at the MAAC mater in 2001. That season, Seton Hall won its first Big East Championships. He is Seton Hall's all-time leader in putouts (1,387) while also ranking second in hits (247) and at-bats (709) and fifth in runs scored (165). A three-time All-Big East selection, Duffy was named New Jersey College Player of the Year and earned All-America honors after finishing ninth in the nation with a .429 batting average in 1995. The following season, he had a school-record 29-game hitting streak.
Sewitt kept the Golden Griffs scoreless in the final two innings before Jaspers junior second baseman Nick Camastro led the bottom of the 10th inning with a triple to set up junior designated hitter Brendan Slattery for his walk-off, RBI single that forced game seven of the tournament.
On May 27, the Jaspers NCAA Tournament hopes came to fruition with an 11 inning effort from Sewitt who recorded every out in relief of starting pitcher Matt Jordan. The Jaspers earned the thrilling win with Kyle Murphy’s game-winning RBI single in the top of the 11th inning to take a 3-2 triumph. A Memorable Regular-Season
The Manhattan baseball team enjoyed another memorable regular-season leading to the program’s 10th consecutive bid into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament four-team field. The defending MAAC champions compiled an 18-6 league record en route to their fourth Regular-Season title in the last five years. The Jaspers were unstoppable at Van Cortlandt Park where they posted a perfect 18-0 record and stand as the only team in NCAA Division I to go undefeated at home this season.
The Jaspers enjoyed key non-conference victories at Florida Atlantic, West Virginia and archrival Fordham twice. Manhattan went on a 10-game winning streak midway through the season, which at the time was the fifth longest in NCAA Division I. In total, the squad won 15 of 17 games over a 26 day span to hit the 20-win plateau for the 15th straight season.
Junior centerfielder Anthony Vega emerged as one of the top performers in the league. Vega led Manhattan in batting average, slugging percentage, stolen bases, hits, runs, triples and total bases. Vega set career-highs in every statistical category and enters the postseason in the top-5 of the MAAC in six offensive categories. Manhattan earned its first victory of the season at Florida Atlantic on Feb. 25 during a grueling 16-game road stretch to kick off the year. Jaspers’ freshman Vin Teixeira helped power Manhattan to its 9-8 victory over the Owls with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate, driving in three runs and blasting his first career homer. Teixeira was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week, while junior second baseman Nick Camastro garnered MAAC Player of the Week honors after batting .529 (9-17) with two doubles and four RBI in the four game series against Florida Atlantic. Junior John Soldinger was recognized by the league on March 6 earning Pitcher of the Week honors after an exceptional performance at #20 Maryland. Soldinger struck out eight Terps and yielded only two hits in seven innings against the ACC power.
Manhattan took down Big East member West Virginia 13-11 on March 18 with senior pitcher Taylor Sewitt picking up his second of his MAAC leading 11 wins. Soldinger closed the contest for his ninth career save.
Jaspers’ freshman pitcher Michael Scarinci earned his first of two MAAC Rookie of the Week awards on March 26 when he logged his first career win at Marist. Scarinci threw five dominant innings out of the bullpen to help lead the Jaspers to a 7-3 victory over the Red Foxes.
Manhattan began its 10-game win streak at Van Cortlandt Park on March 28 in an 8-5 triumph over NYIT, and the Jaspers stayed undefeated until April 14. The hot streak featured MAAC series sweeps of Iona and Niagara, an 18-11 victory at regional power Army and a thrilling come from behind walk off win over Fordham.
On April 22, Manhattan rallied to win its conference series at Canisius in a first place showdown. It was only the second MAAC series that the Golden Griffs would surrender on their home field at the Demske Sports Complex in the last three years. Soldinger delivered his third consecutive complete game win over Canisius of his career as he helped Manhattan to a 3-2 victory in the first contest. In game two, Scarinci dazzled the crowd by pitching a complete game two-hitter in a 7-0 triumph. Scarinci carried a perfect game into the sixth inning and he faced the minimum 21 batters of the seven inning affair. His spectacular performance earned him MAAC Rookie of the Week honors and CollegeBaseball360.com national Primetime Performer of the Week honor roll recognition.
Sewitt earned MAAC Co-Pitcher of the Week honors on April 30 after delivering the top performance of his career at national power TCU. Sewitt stifled the Horned Frogs for nine innings by limiting them to only three hits and he struck out seven.
Manhattan played some of its best baseball of the season in May, winning nine of its 10 games leading up to the MAAC Tournament. The Jaspers won three MAAC series in the final month of the season, including consecutive sweeps of Saint Peter’s and Siena. Freshman third baseman Joe McClennan earned consecutive MAAC Rookie of the Week honors to close out to regular-season after batting over .400 and not committing an error in his final six starts against the Peacocks and Saints.

What’s a Jasper?
The unique nickname of Manhattan College’s athletic teams, the Jaspers, comes from one of the College’s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C., who served at the College in the late 19th century.
One of the greatest achievements of Brother Jasper was that he brought the then little-known sport of baseball to Manhattan College and became the team’s first coach. Since Brother was also the Prefect of Discipline, he supervised the student fans at Manhattan College baseball games while also directing the team itself.
During one particularly warm and humid day when Manhattan College was playing a semi-pro baseball team called the Metropolitans, Brother Jasper noticed the Manhattan students It took the Jaspers 27 years since joining the MAAC to capture the were becoming restless and edgy as Manhattan came to bat program’s first Regular-Season Championship in 2008, but since then in the seventh inning of a close game.
