2013 PREVIEW
V O L L E Y B A L L
OUTSIDE HITTER
Now entering his fifth season as the Head Coach of the Manhattan College volleyball team, Mark Jones has seen his squad emerge as a perennial contender in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Jaspers finished 15-15 in 2012, their third consecutive season with at least 15 wins. However, Manhattan came up just short of the MAAC Tournament, placing fifth in the conference with a 10-8 MAAC mark. Despite losing four starters from that team, Jones has the pieces in place to make another run at the MAAC title. Manhattan returns seven letterwinners, including the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year, while eight talented newcomers, all of whom are capable of stepping in and making an immediate impact for the Jaspers, also join the fold in 2013. Jones is confident that this group can take that next step and earn a place in the MAAC Tournament. “We’re going to be fine in every aspect of our game,” Jones said. “We’ve got some players coming in that are athletic and very skilled. They’re going to step right in and we’re not going to miss a beat.”
Manhattan returns a pair of starters at outside hitter, and both figure heavily into the Jaspers’ plans for the 2013 season. Senior Ellie Wiekamp emerged as a starter late in the year before missing the final two weeks with an injury. She averaged 2.27 kills and 2.11 digs per set last season. Junior Malia McGuinness, a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection in 2011, tallied 2.67 kills, the second-highest average on the squad, and 2.57 digs per set last year. She also registered 19 service aces, the most among returning players. “We have a lot of experience on the outside,” Jones said. “Ellie and Malia will be six-rotation players, and they’ve both had matches where they hit for high numbers. They’re more than capable of getting the job done.” Adding depth on the outside are sophomore Clare Bozzo and freshman Mary Donnelly. Bozzo has a year of experience in the system under her belt and is ready to contribute when called upon. Donnelly, meanwhile, was a two-time Offensive Player of the Year at Chaparral High School in California.
SETTER
RIGHT SIDE HITTER
Jones has brought in a pair of transfers who are both expected to see significant time at setter. Sophomore Jade Gray comes to Manhattan from Golden West College in California, while fellow sophomore Teodora Peric spent last season at American University. Gray led Golden West to the conference championship and the finals of the California state tournament last season. She distributed 10.81 assists per set en route to a second team all-conference selection. Peric appeared in 16 matches for American in 2012, averaging 4.47 assists per set. “One of the positions that was very important for us was the setting position, so I wanted to bring in players with a little more experience,” Jones said. “These two setters bring a lot of different qualities to the court. I’m very confident in their playing ability, and I know they’re going to help us be successful.”
On the right side, the Jaspers boast one of the top players in the league in 2012 MAAC Rookie of the Year Sydney Volovski. A Preseason First Team All-MAAC selection, Volovski ranked second among all MAAC rookies in hitting percentage last season. In addition, she pounded 269 kills in 2012, the most by any returning Jasper. One of the most versatile players on the roster, Volovski handed out 18 assists at Army and posted 16 digs in a five-set win at Niagara. “Sydney can play pretty much any position for us,” Jones said. “She’s going to be a force. I think she’s going to do really well in the conference, and I expect a lot of great things from her.” Also expected to make a big impact is junior transfer Anna Kitlar, who began her collegiate career with two years at Hofstra. The 6’3 Kitlar brings a new dimension to the offense with her height. This gives Jones a number of options he didn’t

2013 PREVIEW Yamashiro. Haselhorst saw regular playing time during each of her first two seasons in Riverdale, including a handful of starts at libero, and is ready to take on the responsibility that comes with being the full-time starter. She will be challenged for the position by Yamashiro, though. A native of Kapolei, Hawaii, Yamashiro won three consecutive conference championships at Kamehameha High School. She also played for the prestigious Jammers Volleyball Club. “Sarah and Allie are really going to compete,” Jones said. “They’re going to challenge each other all year, and I think they’re both willing to take on that challenge.”
have last season, and he envisions using both Volovski and Kitlar a lot. Backing them up on the right side will be freshman Kelsey LaCour, a native of Walnut Creek, Calif. LaCour, who can also play middle blocker, was named First Team All-Diablo Valley Athletic League last season after leading Northgate High School to its second consecutive conference championship.
MIDDLE BLOCKER Returning starter Juliana Behrens anchors Manhattan’s attack in the middle. Behrens led the Jaspers and ranked third in the MAAC with a .324 hitting percentage last season, and her 50 blocks were third-most on the team. Fellow senior Katelyn Nugent was limited by injuries to just four matches last season. Now fully healthy, she has been impressive in preseason workouts and should be in the mix for the other starting position. “I think we’re in a different situation than we were last season,” Jones said. “We’re very strong at the middle position, so in case we do have an injury, somebody can always step up. I’m very confident with the middles this year. I think they’ll do a great job.” Rounding out that strong group of middle blockers are two transfers who’ll also compete for starting roles. Erin Weis played two seasons at Iowa Western Community College, and the 6’6 Alexis Crist, who previously attended South Mountain Community College, holds the distinction of being the tallest player in program history. “We already had good skilled players defensively and hittingwise, but really needed to get a little more size,” Jones said. “We found it, and that’s only going to help our blocking and make us that much better in the long run.”
SCHEDULE Manhattan starts the season at the Holy Cross/ UMass Lowell Tournament on Aug. 30-31 before opening its home schedule against St. Francis (NY) on Sept. 4. The Jaspers also play preseason tournaments at Sacred Heart and Dartmouth, then host Howard in a mid-week nonconference match prior to their first MAAC weekend at Marist and Siena on Sept. 21-22. The MAAC underwent its first realignment since 1997-98 this summer, with longtime conference member Loyola joining the Patriot League and being replaced by Quinnipiac. The Jaspers’ first matchup with the Bobcats is at Draddy Gymnasium on Sept. 29. “You never know what’s going to happen in this conference,” Jones said. “It’s a very long season, so you’ve got to come prepared and give it 100 percent every single day.” At the conclusion of the 18-match conference schedule, the top four teams will qualify for the MAAC Tournament, which will be held at Siena’s Alumni Recreation Center from Nov. 2224. Manhattan was picked fourth in the MAAC Preseason Poll and is looking to qualify for a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 2003. “It’s a lot of respect from the coaches (to be picked fourth), but what’s most important is where we finish,” Jones said. “We need to be in the top four to qualify for the conference tournament, and we need to make sure we get there in order to have an opportunity to go to the NCAA Tournament. That’s our goal for this year.”
LIBERO With the graduation of Kelsey Huntoon and Julie Bies, the libero position is up for grabs. The leading candidates to take over the role are junior Sarah Haselhorst and freshman Allie

2010 MAAC Coach of the Year
MARK JONES
Head Coach (Washington State ’95) • Fifth Season (59-67)
with the Cougars’ women’s program during the fall and was head coach of the men’s squad in the spring. The women’s team qualified for the NCAA Tournament and finished the year ranked in the Top 25 during each of his four seasons, including an appearance in the regional finals in 1996. Washington State went 27-6 that season, finishing second in the Pac-10 and earning a year-end national ranking of No. 7. The Washington State men’s team went 99-22 during his four seasons at the helm. Jones’ teams went 46-4 in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, including consecutive 13-0 campaigns in 1997-98. Jones led the Cougars to four straight PIVA championships and a third-place finish in the 1998 National Collegiate Volleyball Championships. After one season as the top assistant with Northwestern State’s women’s program in 1998, Jones moved on to William Woods University, where he was the top assistant with both the men’s and women’s programs in 1999-2000. He was named head coach of both programs in August 2000. The women’s team won at least 18 matches and finished third in the America Midwest Conference during each of his three seasons at the helm. After going 13-13 during his first season as mentor of the Owls’ men’s team, Jones was named Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 2002. That season, he led William Woods to a 31-4 record and the NAIA National Championship. His 2003 squad finished the season ranked fifth in the nation with an 18-11 overall record. Overall, Jones went 6228 with the William Woods men’s team and 57-49 with the women’s program. A 1995 graduate of Washington State, Jones won four varsity letters as a member of the Cougars’ men’s volleyball team. He received master’s degrees from William Woods in 2001 and Tennessee State in 2007.
Mark Jones enters his fifth season as Manhattan’s head volleyball coach, and his third in a full-time capacity. In 2010, he was named Anaconda Sports Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year after leading the Jaspers to a school-record 11 MAAC victories and their first 20-win season in seven years. Manhattan followed that up with a 16-15 campaign in 2011, marking the program’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 2002-03. Manhattan posted an 8-23 record in 2009, Jones’ first season at the helm, before notching a 20-14 mark during the 2010 campaign. It was Manhattan’s first winning season since 2005 and first 20-win campaign since 2003. The Jaspers were picked to finish ninth in the MAAC Preseason Poll, but ended up tied for third place with an 11-7 conference record. In 2010, the Jaspers snapped an 11-match losing streak against Fairfield and swept the season series with Siena for the first time in program history. Manhattan also put together a pair of six-match winning streaks and went an impressive 7-2 in five-set matches in 2010. After going 16-15 in 2011, the Jaspers finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 15-15. It was Manhattan’s third straight season going .500 or better, which hadn’t happened since a four-year stretch from 1994-97. The Jaspers went 10-8 in conference play in 2012, the second time in three years that they notched double-digit MAAC wins. Jones came to Riverdale after a two-year stint as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Maine. Under his guidance, the Black Bears qualified for the America East Conference Tournament in 2008. Prior to his time at Maine, Jones spent two seasons as an assistant at Tennessee State University. The Tigers posted back-to-back 20-win seasons and won the Ohio Valley Conference Championship in 2005. Tennessee State went 26-6 against OVC opponents during his two seasons in Nashville. Jones began his coaching career at his alma mater, Washington State, during the 1994-95 athletic season. He served as a volunteer assistant

Furquim transferred to Manhattan after one season at UNLV and made an immediate impact on the Jaspers’ lineup in 2011. She started every match that season, playing in all 115 sets at outside hitter. Furquim ranked third on the team with 287 kills and fifth on the squad with 233 digs, while also notching 72 blocks and 30 service aces. METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE With 11 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 33rd year of competition during the 2013-2014 academic year.
In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members - Albany, Boston University and Hartford - to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 20092010. Butler University was also added in the summer of 2012, giving the MAAC seven teams competing in women’s golf. For the first time in league history, an associate member was added in men’s swimming & diving when Bryant University joined the league in the summer of 2012. In April of 2013 the MAAC added Field Hockey as a sponsored sport with competition beginning in the fall of the 2013-14 academic year between four member institutions – Monmouth University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University and Siena College. In June of 2013 the MAAC added three associate members to the Field Hockey league - Bryant University, Robert Morris University, and Sacred Heart University giving the MAAC seven teams, while Fairfield University will join the league starting in the 2015-16 academic year.
The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun. Current Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Manhattan College, Marist College, Monmouth University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s University, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University, VMI and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Jacksonville University, Robert Morris University, Sacred Heart University, and Stetson University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 25 sports and championships during the 2013-2014 academic year. The MAAC has automatic qualification to 16 NCAA Championships, with the addition of Field Hockey in the fall of 2013. The MAAC Basketball Championships returns to Springfield’s MassMutual Center in 2014 for the final year of a three stint, which will be co-hosted by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC and Fairfield hosted the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regional at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT. The MAAC and Rider hosted the 2012 NCAA Rowing Championships at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, New Jersey and also co-hosted the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University will work together for the fourth time to co-host the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball second and third rounds at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, NY.
ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS
The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the Barclays Center, the MassMutual Center, the IZOD Center, First Niagara Center, Times Union Center, the Webster Bank Arena, and the Sun National Bank Center. This year, the MAAC will take the women’s soccer championship to Orlando, Florida at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The 2014 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Palm Golf Course. In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have played in a total of 80 NIT games and 79 NCAA games. In 2013, the MAAC had a record 6 men basketball programs participate in postseason play- Iona (NCAA Championship), Niagara (NIT), Canisius, Fairfield, Loyola, and Rider (CIT). Canisius and Loyola both advanced to the Quarterfinal round, while Rider reached the second round. In 2012, the MAAC had two teams advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship for the first time in 16 years, with Loyola earning the league’s automatic bid and Iona garnering an at-large bid. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. The Red Foxes have recorded five NCAA wins since their runs in 2007. The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc., now NeuLion, Inc., to design and host the MAAC web page. MAACSports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, live and on-demand video and an online merchandise store. The MAAC, in conjunction with NeuLion, launched an iPhone app in February 2011, followed by Android and iPad apps that were released during the 2011-12 academic year. In September 2011, the conference announced the launch of MAAC.TV, the league’s first broadband network. Eight schools - Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Monmouth, Rider, and Saint Peter’s - are currently part of the network, which broadcast over 400 live events in 2012-13. The MAAC President for the 2013-2014 academic year is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s University. The Vice-President is John J. Hurley, the President of Canisius College. John D’Argenio, Director of Athletics at Siena College, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Allison Sexton, Senior Woman Administrator at Fairfield University University will serve as Vice Chair.
MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTS
In June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for studentathletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools - Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena and three associate members - Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena. In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is currently made up of three MAAC schools - Iona, Marist and Siena - as well as four associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova, VMI and Wagner. Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MAAC Championship, while Robert Morris began competition in the spring of 2011.
