2013 SEASON OUTLOOK It’s not often that ‘change’ becomes a theme for a squad that has little to adjust. But the 2013 Manhattan women’s lacrosse team considers it to be a central part of the upcoming season. “We’ve been changing up a lot of the ways we do things,” said second year head coach Diane Haddeland. “Whether it comes down to evaluating and testing our players, to the way we practice and our concepts.” One of the areas where the Jaspers will see a difference is on the sideline as former Boston College player Catherine Conway joins the coaching staff. “With Cat coming in it’s always good to have another view,” says Haddeland. “She has both an offensive and defensive mind so we’re utilizing a lot of her experience as both a midfielder and goalie.” Manhattan will also have to adjust to the loss of four seniors due to graduation, including the program’s second all-time leading scorer in Chrissy Gutenberger. However, returning eight starters from 2012, and adding in seven freshmen has the Jaspers primed for a run at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament. ATTACK For the first time since 2009, the Jaspers will not have their leading point scorer from the previous year return to Riverdale after the graduation of Gutenberger. “Chrissy is going to be hard to replace,” acknowledged Haddeland. “But I see some young players stepping into those areas. We are going to be a more balanced attack where everyone can score.” Sophomores Donna Jo DiNorcia and Domenica O’Brey will be at the top of that group after registering a combined 33 goals last season and both being named to the MAAC All-Rookie team. Joining them will be classmate Carly Cappello, coming off an impressive fall season, Ali Griffin, who missed last season due to NCAA regulations, along with junior Maria Toscano, whose height at 5’11” will be strong key for Manhattan. Freshmen such as Stefani Ranagan and Claire Roediger will also be factored into the mix with high expectations. “We recruited Stef to be that offensive player and I’m really going to look to her a lot,” said Haddeland. “Our goal is to get everyone ready to be able to dodge, shoot, and score.”

High School All-American, headlines the freshman class and is expected to make an immediate impact in Riverdale. Meanwhile, Victoria Doyle and Casey Silvestri are also going to be relied to provide a spark early. “Megan is going to be a great player for us with her speed,” explained Haddeland. “What helps is we have our veterans like Claire, Carly, and Kelsey who will look to run lines with our freshmen and see how we can work our numbers to our advantage.” DEFENSE On defense, Manhattan returns a strong core of players including seniors Maria Aloe and Amy Branchini. A co-captain, Aloe started every game last year for the Jaspers while Branchini tied for second among position players in ground balls. “Maria and Amy, with their experience, are going to have to lead the defense this year,” said Haddeland. “We will be looking to a lot of our freshman to take some roles over as we have a few talented kids.”

Sophomore Kaleigh Howe will be changing up positions as she moves from the attacking end of the field to the back line. Joining her are fellow classmates Caitlin Hynes, who corralled 13 ground balls as a freshman, and Alex Rousseau. “Kaleigh’s stick work has really improved in practice and I think changing her position is really going to work out,” noted Haddeland. “Caitlin has some good height we can use and Alex is very aggressive, constantly deflecting and intercepting passes.” Freshman Marissa Acosta and Kaitlyn Cunningham will compete for playing time in their first season in Riverdale.

“We’re really going to rely on Christina once again this year,” says Haddeland. “She is a great player and will have another very good season. I think she has that ownership right now and this year will be easier on her because she’s a little more comfortable.” SCHEDULE Entering her second season at the helm, Haddeland has put together a 17-game slate that features eight matches at Gaelic Park. “I’m really excited about this year’s schedule and what it offers,” said Haddeland. “We added some new teams that will test us and really get us prepared for the conference season.” The Jaspers will begin their 2013 campaign on the road when they travel to Piscataway, N.J. to take on Rutgers on Feb. 10 before opening their home schedule on Feb. 22 against Wagner. After traveling to Brown (March, 3) and hosting LIU Brooklyn (March, 6), Manhattan will embark on a three game road trip with contests at Saint Joseph’s (March, 9), Albany (March, 11), and Howard (March, 17). The Great Danes are the two-time defending America East champions and participated in the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and are receiving votes in the USIWLA Preseason Coaches Poll. Meanwhile, the contest against Howard marks the first time the two schools will meet since the 2008 season and the fifth overall meeting. Following the Jaspers’ eight day road march, Gaelic Park will host three straight matches in late March. The Jaspers will welcome Central Connecticut State on March 19 before hosting Delaware State, in its inaugural season, on March 23 as well as Fresno State (3/29). Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play will begin on April 3 when Manhattan makes the short trip to New Rochelle, N.Y. for a date with Iona. They will then host reigning tournament champion Canisius three days later on April 6, before visiting Marist on April 10. The final home stand of the season features back-to-back games against Siena (4/13) and 2012 MAAC Regular Season Champions Fairfield (4/17). The Jaspers will conclude conference play on April 20 with a trip to Niagara. In its final game of the regular season, Manhattan visits New York City rival Columbia on April 27. Marist College is the site of the 2013 MAAC Championships with the top four teams in the conference qualifying for the tournament, scheduled to be played May 3 & 5 at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.

MIDFIELD Manhattan returns a bulk of talent at the midfield, led by the speed of players such as Clare Kerrisk and Kelsey Rehain. In 2012, Rehain was the team’s third leading scorer with 18 total points, while Kerrisk notched double-digit goals as a sophomore. GOALKEEPING Captain Carly Eskenazi adds veteran leadership For the second consecutive season, Christina to the Jaspers and her aggressive style of play Fiorinelli will be the lone Jasper between the pipes. is something the coaches will look to utilize Playing every minute as a freshman, she led the heavily. Lauren Pribetich, another third-year player, nation in ground balls per game at 3.79 a contest. competed in all 14 games last year for Manhattan She also averaged more than 10 saves a game, and returns again to the midfield in 2013. Junior being named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team. Brianna Rickert will also battle for playing time this season after showing a strong ability on draw controls in her first year with the team. A trio of newcomers will increase the depth and ability of Manhattan this season. Megan Yarusso, a 2 0 1 3 WOMEN’S M A N H A T T A N C O L L E G E

Diane Haddeland enters her second season as Jaspers’ head women’s lacrosse coach. Prior to her time in Riverdale, Haddeland spent three years as an assistant coach at Division III power Fairleigh Dickinson in Madison, NJ. A native of Mahopac, NY, During her first season with Manhattan, Haddeland saw a veteran core mesh with a talented group of fresh faces to put on an exciting season. Her first victory as a college head coach came in the home opener in a 13-12 win over Bucknell (2/25) after freshman goalkeeper Christina Fiorinelli stopped a last second shot for the Bison. The Jaspers also captured two impressive comebacks in her debut season, overcoming a five goal deficit against Marist (4/4) and a six goal second half deficit against Niagara (4/14) at Gaelic Park.

In her third season at Fairleigh Dickinson she was the top assistant to Adrienne Booth Carr. In her role, she helped with recruiting and worked with the goalies on the team. She was part of a staff, under Booth Carr, that helped take the Devils from a 1-13 record to a 13-7 overall mark in 2011 and the ECAC Mid Atlantic finals. In 2010, she helped guide Fairleigh Dickinson to an ECAC Mid Atlantic Championship as well as being ranked as the second most improved Division III team in the nation by LaxPower. Prior to her time in Madison, she played four years (2005-08) of Division III Women’s Lacrosse at The College of New Jersey for Coach Sharon Pfluger. Her college resume includes three final four appearances and two National Championships in 2005 & 2006. She graduated in

2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Exercise Science before going on to achieve a Masters of Sports Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson in 2011. The ability to mold a program did not begin in college either. Haddeland attended Mahopac High School where she helped to start the Girls Lacrosse program and served as team captain her senior season. A passionate member of the lacrosse community, Haddeland has spent the last three years working as a coach or director at multiple lacrosse schools and academies including The Lacrosse Academy at Fairleigh Dickinson, Morris Storm Lacrosse and working as a volunteer coach for the Mahopac lacrosse clinic since 2000.

Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., is the 19th president of Manhattan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009. O’Donnell came to Manhattan after five years of service as the dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University. Before coming to New York, O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide honors program. An active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the British Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contemporary American Catholic writers. He has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and coedited The Work of Andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the Arts. In addition, O’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. At Manhattan, he continues to hold a faculty appointment, as he did at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English. As the first president of the College not to be a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, O’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. He has experience in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill. His publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engagement in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. From 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national

magazine Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education, and he was a member of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education from 1993–2000. In addition, he is currently on the board of trustees at La Salle University and the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu), and has served as a board member for the Lilly Fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participation in the mission of Catholic higher education. A native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American literature and language. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors. O’Donnell is married to Angela O’Donnell (formerly Alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. The couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of Saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the St. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia University, currently pursuing graduate studies), and Will (a graduate of Fordham).

A 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, Byrnes enters his 25th year as director of athletics. Since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, Byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight NCAA Tournament bids (four women, four men). Additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason National Invitational Tournaments (NIT). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under Byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 27 student-athletes have received All-America honors for both athletic and academic achievements. Before returning to Manhattan, Byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation. A native of Garrison, New York, Byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. He also holds an M.B.A. from City University in Seattle, Washington. As an undergraduate, Byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. Byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive

end. He spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969. Upon graduation, Byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, New Jersey. He also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tournament appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “B” State Championship in football (1972). In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, Byrnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association, at one time the sponsoring body of the NIT. He also served on the NCAA Championship Committee in 1999-2000. He is currently the chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Basketball Committee and the Committee on Athletic Administration, as well as a member of the ECAC Officials Negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, Byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Byrnes resides in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, along with his wife, Rosemary. He is the father of five children: Bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), Brian (Manhattan ’99), Darren and Brigid.
