2014 SEASON OUTLOOK

After missing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament on a tiebreaker last season, the Manhattan College softball team is determined to get back to the postseason. And despite losing nine letterwinners, including three starters, from that squad, Head Coach Tom Pardalis believes he has the pieces in place for the Jaspers to not just make their first MAAC Tournament appearance in three seasons, but to make a deep run. “We graduated a lot of people,” Pardalis said. “But I still feel we’re very experienced with the team we have back, and we’ve filled in with a lot of young players that are going to make us better. “This team has high expectations, and we really believe that we can be there. We’re playing with a lot of confidence. We’re hoping to get out of the gate well and that things will fall the way we think they’ll fall.” PITCHERS Heading into her senior season, Kate Bowen has put together one of the most prolific all-around careers in Manhattan

M A N H A T T A N

softball history. A First Team All-MAAC performer a year ago, Bowen was also Manhattan’s 2012-13 Female StudentAthlete of the Year. Batting leadoff for much of the season, she paced the Jaspers with a .367 batting average and 61 hits while ranking second on the squad with six home runs and 33 RBIs. Also the leader of the pitching staff, Bowen posted team-highs in wins (9), complete games (10), innings pitched (106.2) and ERA (3.81) last season. She will once again figure prominently both in the circle and in the lineup during her final year in Riverdale. Junior Amy Bright and sophomore Erin Hamm also return. Bright led the squad with 24 appearances last season, and she recorded seven victories to go along with a team-best 71 strikeouts. She’s a nice complement to Bowen in the rotation and may also work her way into the lineup as an outfielder this season. Hamm is a pitcher exclusively, and she gives the Jaspers a valuable option out of the bullpen. Of her 18 appearances last year, 16 came in relief. Further bolstering this deep pitching staff are sophomore transfer Anna Crowley and freshman Danielle Gabriel. Crowley made eight appearances for UMass Lowell last season and finished with a 3.00 ERA. The all-time strikeouts leader at Toms River South High School in New Jersey, Gabriel earned back-toback second team all-state selections in 2012-13. “Now that we’ve got five pitchers on the roster, we’ve got options,” Pardalis said. “The pitchers don’t have to go seven innings. A pitcher can go five, and then we can bring in a reliever that actually had time to warm up instead of pulling somebody off the field. That makes us stronger.” CATCHERS Catcher is perhaps the deepest position on the roster. Pardalis has three viable options who all figure to see playing time somewhere on the field. Of the three, sophomore Elena Bowman figures to see the most time behind the plate. Bowman had a remarkable freshman campaign, earning

First Team All-MAAC and First Team AllNortheast Region honors after crushing 12 home runs, the second-highest single-season total in school history, and leading the team with 36 RBIs. She also made 15 appearances at third base last season and will likely see time at designated player, as well. Bowman was selected to the Preseason All-MAAC Team as a utility player. Fellow sophomore Andi Stallard also proved to be a valuable piece in the middle of the Jaspers’ lineup last season. She ranked third on the team with seven doubles and fourth with 16 RBIs while playing four different positions in 2013. In addition to catcher, Stallard started games at designated player and right field before settling in as Manhattan’s regular left fielder late in the year. Freshman Jenn Vazquez figures to get plenty of at-bats as well, either at catcher, designated player or first base. She was a three-time first team all-state selection at St. Joseph’s High School in Fairfield, Conn., and she holds the St. Joseph’s school records for both home runs (19) and RBIs (97). “Jenn’s going to play a couple different positions for us,” Pardalis said. “She’s a great hitter. She provides a lot of power.” INFIELD Junior Sydney Weedon, the incumbent starter at first base, had a breakout campaign in 2013. She started 30 games last season and hit .302 with 14 RBIs. Weedon is also very solid defensively. However, she faces stiff competition from Vazquez for the starting role. The Jaspers’ starting second baseman will depend on who’s pitching. When she isn’t in the circle, Bowen will be at second. On the other days, junior Amanda Paxson will get the nod. Paxson had a great fall and is expected to be a key part of the Jaspers’ lineup regardless of the starting pitcher. She will bat in the middle of the order and serve as the designated player when not in the field. “Amanda Paxson is just a tremendous player,” Pardalis said. “And she’s the one who provides the protective player behind Kate and Elena. Amanda’s got to

hit. And she will.” Paxson will take over the lineup spot vacated by Amanda Babcock, who was a constant over the past two seasons. Babcock started every game at shortstop last year and was a Second Team AllMAAC selection. Replacing her in the field will be freshman Stephanie Reinhardt, who comes to Riverdale from Albany’s Colonie Central High School. “Steph had a great fall,” Pardalis said. “She’s in the same mold as Amanda Babcock. She’s durable. She goes out there and plays nice and steady, and I think she’s going to hit. I think she’s going to do a great job.” Junior Mickayla Romero, a two-year starter, figures to man the hot corner. She boasts a good glove (she committed just one error in 2013), and Pardalis is expecting big things out of her offensively this season, as well. Bowman also saw significant time at third base while Romero was out with an injury last season. Sophomore Kelsey Brennan transferred to Manhattan after one year at MAAC rival Fairfield and is a capable backup at each of the infield positions. OUTFIELD Sophomore Emily Cutler played 43 games in center field last season and returns to anchor the Manhattan outfield. One of the fastest players on the roster, she’s an excellent defender with great range. Cutler also brings a different look to the lineup as the team’s only switchhitter. “Defensively, I don’t think there’s a better outfielder in the league than Emily,” Pardalis said. “We’re expecting her bat to come along. We would love to see Emily in the leadoff spot somewhere down the road.” M A N H A T T A N

While Cutler will patrol center field, the corner outfield spots are up in the air. Stallard emerged as the regular left fielder late last season, and she will likely see significant time there again in 2014. Bright also figures to see a good amount of playing time in the outfield. Because of injuries and lack of pitching depth, she’s been used almost exclusively in the circle during her first two years in Riverdale. However, Bright’s a very good hitter, as well, and Pardalis is excited to finally work her bat into the lineup on a regular basis. “In the past, we weren’t able to use Amy in the outfield because we didn’t have a lot of pitching depth,” Pardalis said. “But Amy’s one of our better hitters, and she’s gone out there and shown that she can play the outfield. So, she’s got an opportunity, when she’s not pitching, to play the outfield.” A pair of newcomers also figure into the outfield mix. Madison Bailey hit .346 last season, as Desert Valley High School in Phoenix qualified for the Arizona State Tournament. Lauren Visconti, meanwhile, earned first team all-conference and second team all-state honors while helping Bethlehem Catholic High School win the Pennsylvania State Championship in 2013. Rounding out Manhattan’s outfield corps are sophomores Meredith Bryant and Zee Pierce. Bryant, a transfer from Rhode Island, can play almost any position on the field, and her speed is a dangerous weapon. Pierce saw limited action as a freshman, but worked hard in the offseason to improve her game. In addition, Pardalis sees Crowley as an option in the outfield, as well.

SCHEDULE The Jaspers open the season with their annual trip to Florida for the Rebel Sprign Games from March 7-9. Manhattan then returns home for a doubleheader against Hampton on March 13. The Jaspers will play more home games this season than any other year during Pardalis’ tenure, with a total of 25 contests scheduled for Gaelic Park. Also included on the non-conference schedule are matchups with programs such as St. John’s, Columbia and Sacred Heart, as well as a home-and-home series with LIU Brooklyn. The Jaspers and Blackbirds will play one game in Brooklyn on March 21, followed by a single contest in Riverdale on March 22. Conference play starts on March 29, when new MAAC member Quinnipiac visits Gaelic Park for a twinbill. Manhattan will celebrate “Senior Day” against Fairfield on May 3, then wraps up the regular season at MAAC newcomer Monmouth the following day. With the addition of the two new schools this season, the conference schedule and conference tournament field have both been expanded. Each team will continue to play one doubleheader against every other MAAC foe for a total of 20 games (up from 16 last season). The biggest change, however, is that the MAAC Tournament now includes the top six teams in the regular season standings. The MAAC Tournament will be held at Fairfield’s Alumni Softball Field from May 7-10. Manhattan was picked to finish ninth in the MAAC Preseason Poll.

Head Coach (Saint Leo ’72) • Fifth Season (82-107-1)

Tom Pardalis enters his fifth season as Manhattan’s head softball coach. He posted a winning record and led Manhattan to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament during each of his first two seasons at the helm. During his initial campaign in 2010, Pardalis led the Jaspers to a 25-23-1 record and their second straight MAAC Tournament appearance. The 25 wins were Manhattan’s highest total since 2006, which also marked the last time the Jaspers had finished above .500 prior to his arrival. In 2011, Manhattan finished above .500 again, going 25-23. The Jaspers defeated every team in the MAAC during the regular season, posting a school-record 12 conference wins en route to the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament. It was Manhattan’s third straight postseason appearance, matching the feat of the 2004-06 squads. Eleven Manhattan players have been named AllMAAC in Pardalis’ four seasons, including two-time First Team All-MAAC choice Jaci Rahey. Rahey also earned a First Team All-Northeast Region selection in 2010. Kate Bowen was named First Team AllNortheast Region as a utility player in 2012 while also earning Second Team All-MAAC honors as an infielder. Bowen was named First Team All-MAAC in 2013, along with Elena Bowman, who set a

Manhattan freshman record with 12 home runs. In addition, his student-athletes have found success in the classroom, earning a total of 33 MAAC All-Academic selections. Bowen and Amanda Babcock were both named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Team, as well. A 40-year coaching veteran, Pardalis came to Manhattan after six seasons an assistant at Western Connecticut State University. He helped the Colonials win the 2007 ECAC Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. Also in 2008, he coached the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Year and four all-conference players. Prior to his time at Western Connecticut State, Pardalis was an assistant coach at MAAC rival Marist for three seasons. He worked with the Red Foxes’ hitters and outfielders, while also handling duties in recruiting, film work and scheduling. In 2006, Marist posted a 33-13 overall record en route to the MAAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. That season, the Red Foxes ranked eighth nationally in home runs per game, belting 47 in 46 contests. Marist also ranked 19th nationally in slugging percentage (.458) and 21st in earned run average (2.52) in 2006. Four Red Foxes earned All-MAAC honors that season, including both the MAAC Player of the Year and MAAC Pitcher of the Year.

From 1992-2001, Pardalis was the head coach of the varsity softball team at New Fairfield High School in New Fairfield, Conn. New Fairfield won the 1999 Connecticut State Championship and produced six Division I softball players. Pardalis led the Rebels to four straight division championships (1993-96) and twice earned conference Coach of the Year honors (1994-95). He also guided three different club teams to the PONY Nationals. In 1997, he led the Connecticut Legacy to the state championship and a fifth-place finish at the PONY Nationals in the under-14 division. He also led the under-16 Connecticut Crush to Nationals in 1998, and the under-18 Connecticut Tradition to the 1999 PONY Nationals. Pardalis spent 37 years teaching physical education and coaching in the Connecticut Public School system before retiring following the 200809 school year. He has also coached football, basketball and baseball during his career, and he was the varsity boy’s basketball coach at Danbury High School from 1996-2009. Pardalis spent time as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Western Connecticut State from 1992-96, helping the Colonials win the 1995 ECAC Championship and qualify for the 1996 NCAA Tournament. A 1972 graduate of Saint Leo College, Pardalis earned a master’s degree from Western Connecticut

BRIDGET HURLMAN Assistant Coach (Marist ‘06) • Fifth Season

Bridget Hurlman enters her fifth season as an assistant coach for the Jaspers. A two-time All-MAAC selection at Marist, Hurlman served as team captain when the Red Foxes won the MAAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2006. Hurlman earned Second Team All-MAAC honors following both the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. In 2005, she started every game at either catcher or designated player and posted a .331 batting average. Hurlman also led the Red Foxes with seven home runs, 33 RBIs and a .569 slugging percentage that season. As a senior in 2006, Hurlman drew a team-high 22 walks and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. She also earned a place on the MAAC All-Tournament Team, as the Red Foxes won their first-ever MAAC Championship.

She began her coaching career as an assistant at SUNY Purchase in 2007. During her time at SUNY Purchase, she worked primarily with the pitchers and catchers, while assisting with offensive instruction. Hurlman was also involved in all other aspects of the program, including practice planning, budgeting, travel arrangements and recruiting. Also a certified athletic trainer, Hurlman is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. From September-December 2006, she worked as an athletic trainer at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, where she provided medical care to athletes of all ages in a variety of sports. From August 2007-May 2009, she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at St. John’s University, where she worked primarily with the

women’s cross country and track and field teams, as well as the men’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer squads. A three-time MAAC All-Academic selection, Hurlman graduated cum laude from Marist in 2006. She received a master’s degree in sports management from St. John’s in May 2012. The daughter of Margaret and James Hurlman, she currently resides in Yonkers, N.Y.

METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE With 11 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is in its 33rd year of competition during the 2013-2014 academic year.

In the summer of 2009, the MAAC added three associate members - Albany, Boston University and Hartford - to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MAAC members Fairfield, Niagara and Siena in 2009-2010. Butler University was also added in the summer of 2012, giving the MAAC seven teams competing in women’s golf. For the first time in league history, an associate member was added in men’s swimming & diving when Bryant University joined the league in the summer of 2012. In April of 2013 the MAAC added Field Hockey as a sponsored sport with competition beginning in the fall of the 2013-14 academic year between four member institutions – Monmouth University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University and Siena College. In June of 2013 the MAAC added three associate members to the Field Hockey league - Bryant University, Robert Morris University, and Sacred Heart University giving the MAAC seven teams, while Fairfield University will join the league starting in the 2015-16 academic year.

The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun. Current Conference members include: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Manhattan College, Marist College, Monmouth University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s University, and Siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy in men’s lacrosse. St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Villanova University, VMI and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. Drake University, Jacksonville University, Robert Morris University, Sacred Heart University, and Stetson University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at Albany and the University of Hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. The MAAC will support 25 sports and championships during the 2013-2014 academic year. The MAAC has automatic qualification to 16 NCAA Championships, with the addition of Field Hockey in the fall of 2013. The MAAC Basketball Championships returns to Springfield’s MassMutual Center in 2014 for the final year of a three stint, which will be co-hosted by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. By having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA Championship events. Most recently, the MAAC and Fairfield hosted the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regional at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT. The MAAC and Rider hosted the 2012 NCAA Rowing Championships at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, New Jersey and also co-hosted the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. All three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. The MAAC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the First and Second Rounds in 2006. The MAAC, Canisius College and Niagara University will work together for the fourth time to co-host the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball second and third rounds at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, NY.

ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS

The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1999. First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, the Barclays Center, the MassMutual Center, the IZOD Center, First Niagara Center, Times Union Center, the Webster Bank Arena, and the Sun National Bank Center. This year, the MAAC will take the women’s soccer championship to Orlando, Florida at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The 2014 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Palm Golf Course. In the past several years, a number of the MAAC schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Championships. MAAC schools have played in a total of 80 NIT games and 79 NCAA games. In 2013, the MAAC had a record 6 men basketball programs participate in postseason play- Iona (NCAA Championship), Niagara (NIT), Canisius, Fairfield, Loyola, and Rider (CIT). Canisius and Loyola both advanced to the Quarterfinal round, while Rider reached the second round. In 2012, the MAAC had two teams advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship for the first time in 16 years, with Loyola earning the league’s automatic bid and Iona garnering an at-large bid. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual National Champion, the University of Tennessee. The Red Foxes have recorded five NCAA wins since their runs in 2007. The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumpTV, Inc., now NeuLion, Inc., to design and host the MAAC web page. MAACSports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, live and on-demand video and an online merchandise store. The MAAC, in conjunction with NeuLion, launched an iPhone app in February 2011, followed by Android and iPad apps that were released during the 2011-12 academic year. In September 2011, the conference announced the launch of MAAC.TV, the league’s first broadband network. Eight schools - Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Monmouth, Rider, and Saint Peter’s - are currently part of the network, which broadcast over 400 live events in 2012-13. The MAAC President for the 2013-2014 academic year is Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of Saint Peter’s University. The Vice-President is John J. Hurley, the President of Canisius College. John D’Argenio, Director of Athletics at Siena College, will chair the Committee on Athletic Administration, and Allison Sexton, Senior Woman Administrator at Fairfield University University will serve as Vice Chair.

MAAC ASSOCIATE SPORTS

In June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop opportunities for studentathletes as the conference announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s league consists of four MAAC schools - Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena - and three associate members - Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. The women’s league consists of MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara and Siena. In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League. The league is currently made up of three MAAC schools - Iona, Marist and Siena - as well as four associate members, St. Francis (N.Y.), Villanova, VMI and Wagner. Sacred Heart started participating in MAAC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008.
