The Manhattan baseball team enjoyed another memorable regular-season leading to the program’s 10th consecutive bid into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament four-team field. The defending MAAC champions compiled an 18-6 league record en route to their fourth Regular-Season title in the last five years. The Jaspers were unstoppable at Van Cortlandt Park where they posted a perfect 18-0 record and stand as the only team in NCAA Division I to go undefeated at home this season.

The Jaspers enjoyed key non-conference victories at Florida Atlantic, West Virginia and archrival Fordham twice. Manhattan went on a 10-game winning streak midway through the season, which at the time was the fifth longest in NCAA Division I. In total, the squad won 15 of 17 games over a 26 day span to hit the 20-win plateau for the 15th straight season.

Junior centerfielder Anthony Vega emerged as one of the top performers in the league. Vega led Manhattan in batting average, slugging percentage, stolen bases, hits, runs, triples and total bases. Vega set career-highs in every statistical category and enters the postseason in the top-5 of the MAAC in six offensive categories. Manhattan earned its first victory of the season at Florida Atlantic on Feb. 25 during a grueling 16-game road stretch to kick off the year. Jaspers’ freshman Vin Teixeira helped power Manhattan to its 9-8 victory over the Owls with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate, driving in three runs and blasting his first career homer. Teixeira was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week, while junior second baseman Nick Camastro garnered MAAC Player of the Week honors after batting .529 (9-17) with two doubles and four RBI in the four game series against Florida Atlantic. Junior John Soldinger was recognized by the league on March 6 earning Pitcher of the Week honors after an exceptional performance at #20 Maryland. Soldinger struck out eight Terps and yielded only two hits in seven innings against the ACC power.

Manhattan took down Big East member West Virginia 13-11 on March 18 with senior relief pitcher Taylor Sewitt picking up his second of his MAAC leading eight wins. Soldinger closed the contest for his ninth career save.

Jaspers’ freshman pitcher Michael Scarinci earned his first of two MAAC Rookie of the Week awards on March 26 when he logged his first career win at Marist. Scarinci threw five dominant innings out of the bullpen to help lead the Jaspers to a 7-3 victory over the Red Foxes.

Manhattan began its 10-game win streak at Van Cortlandt Park on March 28 in an 8-5 triumph over NYIT, and the Jaspers stayed undefeated until April 14. The hot streak featured MAAC series sweeps of Iona and Niagara, an 18-11 victory at regional power Army and a thrilling come from behind walk off win over Fordham.

On April 22, Manhattan rallied to win its conference series at Canisius in a first place showdown. It was only the second MAAC series that the Golden Griffs would surrender on their home field at the Demske Sports Complex in the last three years. Soldinger delivered his third consecutive complete game win over Canisius of his career as he helped Manhattan to a 3-2 victory in the first contest. In game two, Scarinci dazzled the crowd by pitching a complete game two-hitter in a 7-0 triumph. Scarinci carried a perfect game into the sixth inning and he faced the minimum 21 batters of the seven inning affair. His spectacular performance earned him MAAC Rookie of the Week honors and CollegeBaseball360.com national Primetime Performer of the Week honor roll recognition.

Sewitt earned MAAC Co-Pitcher of the Week honors on April 30 after delivering the top performance of his career at national power TCU. Sewitt stifled the Horned Frogs for nine innings by limiting them to only three hits and he struck out seven.

Manhattan played some of its best baseball of the season in May, winning nine of its 10 games leading up to the MAAC Tournament. The Jaspers won three MAAC series in the final month of the season, including consecutive sweeps of Saint Peter’s and Siena. Freshman third baseman Joe McClennan earned consecutive MAAC Rookie of the Week honors to close out to regular-season after batting over .400 and not committing an error in his final six starts against the Peacocks and Saints. Manhattan took the first two games of the three game series with Canisius over the weekend of April 21-22 in Buffalo, N.Y. Junior starter John Soldinger delivered the third consecutive complete game winning effort of his career against the Golden Griffs as he lifted the Jaspers to a 3-2 victory in game one of the MAAC series. Soldinger powered Manhattan through nine strong innings, holding the Golden Griffs scoreless for the last seven innings, and he struck out three batters. From the third through the eighth inning Soldinger retired 18 of the 20 batters that he faced.

Freshman starter Michael Scarinci dazzled the crowd in game two with a spectacular two-hit complete game effort to propel Manhattan to a 7-0 triumph and lock up only the second MAAC series victory over Canisius at its home field, the Demske Sports Complex, in the last three years. Scarinci carried a perfect game into the sixth inning as he sat down 15 batters in order. The only thing that got in his way of perfection was a pair of infield hits in the last two innings. Scarinci faced the minimum 21 batters of the seven inning affair, and he did not allow the Golden Griffs to touch second base in the entire contest. He finished with four strikeouts and did not yield a walk. Scarinci was named MAAC Rookie of the Week for the second time and received national recognition by CollegeBaseball360.com on the Primetime Performer Honor Roll. Canisius captured game three of the series winning 4-1 to avoid the sweep. The Golden Griffs scored all four of their runs in the first inning, while starting pitcher Billy Martin managed to keep the Jaspers off the scoreboard until the fifth inning.

Jaspers’ junior outfielder Joe Rock had the hot bat during the series as he hit .500 and drove in four runs starting two of the three games. Freshman third baseman Joe McClennan also hit .500 (4-for-8), scored three runs and had one RBI in three starts against Canisius.

# 3 Fa i r f i e l d ( 2 - 1 )

Manhattan won two of three games against Fairfield in their regular-season series. The Jaspers split the doubleheader with the Stags on May 5 in Connecticut with Manhattan winning game one 7-5. Fairfield escaped with a 6-3 come from behind victory in game two.

Junior starter John Soldinger pitched seven solid innings and struck out five Stags in game one before turning the lead over to freshman reliever Michael Scarinci who recorded his second career save. Then in game two, Fairfield rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a one run deficit and hold off the Jaspers. Jaspers’ senior pitcher Mike Giordano went three innings in his first start after missing five weeks due to an injury.

Manhattan rebounded to earn an 8-5 victory in the rubber game on May 6 to lock up the series. Manhattan junior catcher Ramon Ortega smashed a three run homer in the eighth inning and posted four RBI in the contest. Junior right fielder Joe Rock gave Ortega offensive support as he had three hits with a home run and two RBI help defeat the Stags. #4 Rider (1-2)

Rider is the only team in the 2012 MAAC Tournament field that the Jaspers dropped their regular-season series against. The Broncs swept a doubleheader on April 14 in Lawrenceville, N.J. winning 11-9 and 3-1, but Manhattan bounced back with a 13-4 victory the next day to take one in the series.

Junior second baseman Nick Camastro (.545, 6-for-11) and sophomore outfielder Chris Kalousdian (.556, 5-for-9) led the Manhattan offense in the series against Rider. Junior catcher Ramon Ortega posted eight RBI and two home runs in three starts behind the plate. He led the Jaspers with a .917 slugging percentage.

In game one, the Jaspers fell behind 11-1 by the fifth inning and their comeback bid fell short. Manhattan scored the final eight runs of the game, including a five run sixth inning that featured a two run homer from Ortega. Then in game two, Rider junior Tyler Smith outlasted Jaspers’ starter John Soldinger in a pitchers duel that ended with Ian Lindsay’s two run walk-off homer run in the 3-1 decision.

In game three, Manhattan scored 10 runs in its last two at bats as the Jaspers ran off with a nine run victory. Ortega had five RBI and scored two runs in the contest. MAAC Regular-Season Champs, Again

It took the Jaspers 27 years since joining the MAAC to capture the program’s first Regular-Season Championship in 2008, but since then the Jaspers have won the crown four of the last five seasons. With the 2012 MAAC Regular-Season title Manhattan now has the most among the nine active members of the baseball league since the conference moved to the four-team tournament in 1994.

10 Straight

The Manhattan College baseball team secured its 10th consecutive MAAC Tournament bid, and enters the 2012 Championships looking for the program’s third MAAC title in the last seven seasons. The Jaspers made their first MAAC Tournament appearance in 2003, and have advanced to the championship round in four of the last nine seasons. Manhattan earned its first league title in 2006 under the direction of head coach Kevin Leighton during his inaugural season at the helm.

What’s a Jasper? The unique nickname of Manhattan College’s athletic teams, the Jaspers, comes from one of the College’s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C., who served at the College in the late 19th century. One of the greatest achievements of Brother Jasper was that he brought the then little-known sport of baseball to Manhattan College and became the team’s first coach. Since Brother was also the Prefect of Discipline, he supervised the student fans at Manhattan College baseball games while also directing the team itself.

During one particularly warm and humid day when Manhattan College was playing a semi-pro baseball The Manhattan College baseball team is one win away from its team called the Metropolitans, Brother Jasper noticed seventh consecutive 30-win season. It would mark the first time the Manhattan students were becoming restless and in program history a team reached this landmark seven straight edgy as Manhattan came to bat in the seventh inning of seasons, and just the ninth time the Jaspers won 30 or more games (1903, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011). a close game. To relieve the tension, Brother Jasper called time-out and told the students to stand up and stretch for a few minutes until the game resumed. The Jaspers enter the 2012 MAAC Tournament carrying the fifth longest active win streak in NCAA Division I, earning Since the College annually played the New York Giants victories in their last seven games of the regular-season. Manhattan has gone unbeaten for nearly three weeks and won in the late 1880’s and into the 1890’s at the old Polo 9 of 10 games in May. Earlier this season, the Jaspers held a Grounds, the Manhattan College practice of the “ season best 10 game win streak from March 28 to April 11. seventh inning stretch” spread into the major leagues, where it has now become a time-honored custom practiced by millions of fans annually. The Manhattan College baseball team enters the NCAA Division I record books as the only club in the nation to go undefeated at home in 2012. The Jaspers posted a perfect 18-0 record at Van Cortlandt Park this season topping it off with a 2-1 victory over Siena on May 18.
