MARCELO VON SCHWARTZ Marcelo von Schwartz is a Spanish- Argentinean film director, architect, and art photographer. His work is known for focusing on the dark side of the things. Creative journey Marcelo von Schwartz completed his studies at the University of Buenos Aires in architecture and went on to study filmmaking under David José Kohn, one of the most influential Argentine filmmakers and a precursor to the Argentine Nouvelle Vague of the 60s (one of the “60’s generation”). In the 1990s he moved to Barcelona, where he started his career as a producer and filmmaker. After working as Art Director and Production Designer on various independent films, he wrote and produced the 35mm Neo-expressionist short film Phoenix. The film competed in over 30 festivals worldwide, winning international recognition and several awards. In 2014 released the Binaural Brainwave version of his movie Dark Bridge, his first long feature film, entirely shot in Bangkok. It is significant in being the first feature film to include a mixed Theta Binaural Brainwave through the entire movie’s score to accentuate its hypnotic mood, opening the door to “new subconscious movie experiences” - a precursor to the new Neurocinema movement. He has also recently made a visual collaboration with RECOIL (Alan Wilder, former keyboardist and songwriter of Depeche Mode) for the RECOIL Selected World Tour 2010-2011. Currently is developing a VR thriller 3D movie project to shoot in Asia in 2020 among other photographic projects Art Exhibitions/Art Events 2018 [October] Art Takes SoHo [Collective] The Untitled Space, Tribeca, New York 2018 [September] SPACES [Collective] Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi Architecture Biennale Venice 2018 [April] Bangkok Dreams Solo exhibition Continent Hotel Bangkok 2017 [October] ESCAPE Solo Exhibition RMA Institute Bangkok 2017 [May] Tokyo International Art Fair Japan 2015 Epokalipto, Bangkok Slideluck I, [New York] The Space, Bangkok 2012 Dark Cabaret Photo Book Launch, Warp Studio, Bangkok 2011 Dark Bridge [Feature film, 90’], Premiere at Puchon Fantastic Festival, Seoul 2010 Art Videos for RECOIL World Tour, SELECTED/Strange Hours 2010-11, US-Europe 2007 [H]opening and Trayectos Extremos, OffLoop, Nau Ivanow, Barcelona 2006 [H]opening, [video-art] ARCO Madrid, Jacobo Karpio Gallery Miami 2005 Trayectos Extremos [video-art], Miami Art Fair, Segovia-Isaacs Gallery Barcelona 2004 Imaginary Landscapes, [Photography] Galeria Segovia-Isaacs, Barcelona 2003 New Figuration [Photography] Galeria Segovia-Isaacs, Barcelona 2001 Gaudi Moving [Video Art], Casa Mila, Fundacio Caixa de Catalunya, Barcelona 1998 Phoenix [Art short film] Premiered-Awarded at 60th.Brno Film Festival [Czech Republic] Photobooks 2012 Dark Cabaret 2019 Two Realities [Curator] https://vonschwartz.tumblr.com/ www.marcelovonschwartz.com mvonschwartz@gmail.com

“-I want to see in a picture the things I can’t reach with my own sight. More than a fragment of a “visual reality”, I’m interested to dive inside the world of emotions. And I believe it still can be seen as “Reality” as the reality actually is composed by many different layers. While many photographers are interested to reflect the most apparent ones, I always try to get the emotions lying underneath certain place. Maybe because of my background as architect, I tend to create an emotional bond with the buildings and places I visit. And an emotional message is what I get from every place I visit, from every building I explore. Therefore, my work isn’t a re-presentation of a formal appearance but a re-creation of a wide range of emotional inputs. Get the real emotions of this place, keep them with me and later work with the picture until these emotions come up. So I try to create a different view from a city or a building, an emotional view. If for modern architects “form follows function”, in my work form always follows emotion”. Marcelo von Schwartz, Bangkok 2019

“Maybe I’ll go where I can see stars, he said to himself as the car gained velocity and altitude; it headed away from San Francisco, toward the uninhabited desolation to the north. To the place where no living thing would go. Not unless it felt thathe end had come.” Philip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
