Weekend House Design Site: Faridabad, Haryana, India

SEM

Project Designing a Weekend/Holiday home for a family of four with frequent guests. The project was themed around ‘country side’ and Sustainability. High degree of Contouring played an important prerequisite aspect of Site; Simultaneously social interactions were acknowledged and conceptualized in the form of a split level to separate Sleeping (Private) and Living (Public) spaces. Swimming pool was intentionally placed on a high ground for minimal excavation and also to create privacy.

Physical Model

Terrace garden keeps the underneath Living and Dining spaces insulated.

Beam extensions serve the purpose of vertical sunshades, simultaneously reducing the structural cost.

Wave-roof lets North light and low Winter sun in, but blocks the Summer sun.

Site is steeply contoured; instead of designing around, existing contours were incorporated for segregating Public and Private areas with a level difference further introducing a North face.

Site area

The spaces have been grouped in a linear layout to maximize N-S Diffused Light and the existing plantation on site eliminates E-W harsh sun. Similarly, a N-S corridor shaded by roof overhangs functions as an open circulation court for Ventilation and defining a prominent Axis.

A Water Channel connects the Circulation Courts and also maintains Privacy between Spaces. Water as a feature regulates Micro-Climate, bringing about cool ventilation and maintaining Humidity in dry months.

Project VILLAGE REVITALIZATION (in groups of five) Community Centre, School, Hospital, Cultural Centre and Office Complex

Intense Monsoons necessitates the roofs to Slope for quick drainage of Rainwater, which is stored in the water channel, and later used as per requirement.

COMMUNITY CENTRE (Individual)

For Natural Ventilation, a hierarchy of roof heights has been provided.

• Central Dorms with Octagonal sloping roofs gets the maximum exposure to Vent out heat to the uplift. • Northern Community Hall has side sloping roof to not obstruct but let air flow along its length.

Community Centre was to be designed for the residents of Dusi village on the outskirts of Chennai. A Traditional context, necessitated it to be Climatically Responsive and Vernacular in concept.

Hotel Design Site: Sarai Kale Khan, Delhi, India

Designing a convenient Budget Hotel adjacent to Sarai Kale Khan ISBT, New Delhi for commuters specially travelling by Bus or nearby Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (less than half a kilometer). Placed on the Ring Road (one of the major roads of Delhi), the site is well situated to rent Banquet Hall for ceremonies etc. The Hotel is to also provide for Seminar and Conference facilities for corporate meetings. Lack of Commercial activity around the site, requires the site to open up to neighbouring communities.

WINDOW WITH A SUNSHADE

Hotel and Public spaces have been segregated into 2 separate blocks, with common areas kept in the middle. A void was provided to minimize circulation and to provide direct spillage to the grounds from the Banquet Hall.

The Hotel Rooms have been placed at the top for minimizing noise (from the ring road) and maximizing views. A stagger was provided to shade the rooms and break monotonity in form, while adjusting for changing room sizes (Suites at top, Twin rooms in middle and regular rooms at bottom).

ORIENTATION: The Site is appropriately oriented to have longer sides facing North-South for ample Daylight and Winter Sun. FAÇADE DESIGN: The combined effect of Trapezoidal Window shape and Room Overhangs permit Twice the amount of Winter Sun and Thrice the Diffused Light than a regular window. Overall, achieving a 1:3 Fenestration to Wall Area Ratio. TERRACES: Each floor has been provided with atleast 1 Terrace Garden on the pattern of a Form recession, to provide spill outs, and a little patch of Garden to enjoy the ‘outside’.

Site area 11 Acres approx. 4.5 Hectares Design Brief 22 Acres approx. (FAR = 2) Project Housing project was introduced under the theme of ‘Inclusivity’. Providing housing for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of Society was mandatory. A small degree of Master Planning was included in the Design Development stages and Sustainability was a pre-requisite consideration for Design.

Carried out in groups of two, over the semester. The context of Dwarka, influenced design to go High-Rise. However, lesser built mass around, made it easy to experiment with staggering, a central Green belt and Multiple levels of walkway connections.

INCLUSIVITY OF GREENS There is a hierarchy of green spaces ranging from the building level drop-offs, the cluster courts and the central green. All greens are interconnected via voids created at ground level and pedestrian only zones. Also an attempt is made to ensure that all building blocks get adequate green spaces and views into these spaces.

INCLUSIVITY OF MOVEMENT As far as possible, an attempt has been made to follow existing movement lines in and around the site. Through this, instead of imposing, we are enhancing movement patterns. Also by keeping the vehicular movement to a minimum along the periphery, the central spaces become majorly car free, allowing freedom of pedestrian movement.

INCLUSIVITY THROUGH STRUCTURE The built form follows a module of 4.25m X 4.25 m through which various rooms and unit configurations have been derived. As a result, major edges are serrated, which helps to maximize views into interior spaces and hence creating visual links throughout the site.

INCLUSIVITY OF PEOPLE The ews housing has been located in the eastern corner of the site. As a result, they are close to the urban village while still being a part of the site. Due to the hierarchy of greens and public open spaces throughout the site, the EWS have ample opportunities of interaction with minimum chances of development of any hostility due to a forced system of movement. Also an attempt has been made to increase community interactions by virtue of the street like nature of the ews units

Commercial node

By developing a hierarchy of public and private nodes, we allow the site to be usable by the surrounding community, while maintaining its integrity for the residents. The nodes continue along the existing village street giving rise to a strong central axis cutting diagonally across the site and directing placement of residential units.

The form derives itself from the module chosen for structure. Also spaces are arranged to maximize stagger formations and views. The form also promotes cross ventilation between the units due to opportunities of openings on two sides. There are levels of circulation in section as well with the site being a public space and the terraces and walkways becoming more private residential spaces.

Public greens The building heights vary from the lowest at the edge of the site to the highest in the centre. This creates a visual sweep allowing the site to blend in with the low-lying surroundings while maintaining its integrity. Also the central units have been stopped at a low level in order to create a visual openness within the central green. The line of sight is further enhanced by the smaller units and the terraces developed.

The site follows two levels of circulation – vehicular and pedestrian. As far as possible, all vehicular movement has been restricted to site edges with cul-de-sac like drop-offs at major cluster entries. As a result, the central spaces are completely car free. The pedestrian spaces are also interlinked and form a belt covering the major greens in the site.

Project The 500m belt (both sides) along Metro Corridors has been given 50% FAR relaxation to promote Economic growth. The Project detailed Revitalization of Karol Bagh, New Delhi placing Karol Bagh Metro Station as the Focal Node. Issues to consider were TOD (Transit Oriented Development), appropriating Landuse, enhancing quality of life.
