Manila FAME, The Design & Lifestyle Event in Asia, is the Philippines’ premier trade platform for export and design, providing opportunities for Filipino entrepreneurs to showcase their products to the world market. About Manila FAME Since 1983, Manila FAME has nurtured and promoted Philippine creative manufacturers and producers in the global market, consistently featuring top-quality export products and unique Philippine craftsmanship in home, holiday and gifts, fashion and arts and crafts. Organized by the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), Manila FAME, which is held twice a year in March and October, is one of the longest running trade shows in the Asia Pacific, featuring the latest Philippine-made creations from artisans and manufacturers and is the only trade event in the country approved by the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI).

THE CREATIVE TEAM JOSIE NATORI Josie Natori is a renowned international designer and CEO of the Natori Company. Born in the Philippines, she left Manila for New York and studied economics at Manhattanville College. Following graduation, she worked at Merrill Lynch as the first female vice president in investment banking and became a rising star of Wall Street. From the corporate jungle, Natori ventured into fashion and founded Natori Co. After more than three decades, the company has grown into a lifestyle brand that includes lingerie, ready-to-wear apparel, home accents, fragrance, and eyewear, selling to upscale department stores in the US and in at least 15 countries worldwide.
BUDJI LAYUG International designer Budji Layug is a leading light in the Philippine design and home industry. His fame as a furniture designer stems from his commitment to organic forms and materials, and his fresh interpretation of those forms into uniquely modern designs. In designing furniture, he is as devoted to craftsmanship and detailing as he is to function and basic design. Budji studied at the New York School of Interior Design and took up architecture at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST). A Renaissance Man who continues to reinvent himself and improve his craft, he believes that good design is good business. In all his endeavors, his simple design philosophy reigns: Design in every discipline attains excellence when form and function co-exist harmoniously.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS WEAVES OF THE PHILIPPINES / CRAFTSPOTS Ethnic. Artisinal. Uniquely Filipino. Weaves of the Philippines is an initiative of CITEM, in partnership with the Garments and Textile Industry Development Office (GTIDO), to raise awareness on the rich weaving tradition of the Philippines. The craftsmanship that goes into every fabric/material will be presented in live demonstrations and special installations that provide a glimpse into the cultural narrative of the country’s weaving tradition. Traditional Weaves of the Philippines are given a contemporary perspective by a group of Red Box designers who partnered with local manufacturing companies and weaving communities to create their own weaves of art. Featured installations will span the three major island groups of the country: Abel of Ilocos Sur (Luzon), Banig of Samar, Piña of Aklan (Visayas), and T’nalak of South Cotabato/Davao (Mindanao).

BUTTERFLY HOUSE The Butterfly House is a low-cost, graft-proof design solution for disaster-prone areas that was inspired by the Yolanda (Haiyan) super typhoon. US-based businessman Rogelio Santos, Jr. invented it. The Budji Layug-Royal Pineda design firm will help in interior design of a typical model unit. A foldable, steel-framed system that can be stretched out into a livable structure, the Butterfly House is an example of what design and innovation can achieve to improve quality of life, and to build more sustainable and livable cities and communities.

SCENOGRAPHY Design Philippines Scenography is a presentation of exceptional craftsmanship, quality and innovation from the Philippines’ leading creative entrepreneurs working under the mentorship of Manila FAME Creative Director Budji Layug and topbilled by Designer of the Year Awardee (MAISON&OBJET Asia) Kenneth Cobonpue. MANILA WEAR Chic. Stylish. Relevant. Manila Wear is a branding initiative under the curatorship of international icon Josie Natori that aims to position the Philippine fashion industry in the tropical wear market segment and push Philippine design and its unique sensibility that is better than the rest of Asia. This season, Manila Wear unifies 16 of the Philippines’ top fashion and accessory designers, redirecting their creative energies towards the development of new and refreshing designs of apparel and accessories using indigenous and other materials to create works of art and craftsmanship that can only be Filipino.

Design for Exports is a multi-tiered and multi-faceted assistance program which provides Philippine exporters, manufacturers, and designers with a full range of design and product development services. These services cover most areas of product design, merchandising, and brand-building. The program brings together both local and international designers and business experts, as well as both young and seasoned industry players to create the next exciting level for Philippine export products.

Design Week Philippines is a multi-faceted platform that brings together creative visionaries from diverse backgrounds and disciplines in a series of programs and events that celebrate design and artistry. Proclamation No. 277 signed by President Benigno S. Aquino III on October 20, 2011, declares the third week of March and October of each year as Design Week Philippines. Positioning the Philippines as Asia’s design destination, Design Week Philippines fosters connections between creative industry practitioners and design enthusiasts in an interactive sharing of knowledge, ideas, and trends. It has become a national agenda that nurtures the creativity and design capability of the Filipinos to usher in trade opportunities. Design Tours is an integral component of Design Week Philippines, which aims to highlight key destinations within Metro ManilTa to provide further glimpse into the rich cultural and creative capital of the Philippines. This March 2014, the Design Tours will focus on a Walking Tour itinerary that will give visitors insights into the historical landmarks of Manila while, at the same time, will provide a juxtaposition of the various cultural and historical influences that have also shaped the Philippine design sensibility. It is a half-day interactive itinerary. The Design Tours will also further underline the core message of Design Philippines and Manila FAME --- “The Art of the Craftsman = The Soul of the Philippines” --- to provide participants a multi-dimensional appreciation of the Philippines beyond the walls of the exhibition venue. Design Talks is the venue where ideas are shared and cultivated, experienced and remembered, and pursued and created. It focuses on the idea of design thinking, the balance between the creative and intuitive way of thinking, and the rational and analytical way. By putting together people with different backgrounds in one group, it broadens the collective thoughts and outputs that can be discussed and created, as compared to putting together the same kind of people in one. Continuing the discourse of developing the creative mindset and to further expand the idea of design thinking, the framework for this March 2014 edition of Design Talks revolves around DESIGN INNOVATION. It will feature a set of personalities highly acclaimed in their own fields. There will be three individual tracks that each focuses on the idea of Good DESIGN and a force of innovation:
