Purchasing Officers play a critical role in every business, and Nico Garcia is no different. He tells us about the procurement challenges he has been dealing with the past year

Where were you working at before Manila House? After I graduated from college, I worked as a steward in a local restaurant. I was given the opportunity to work abroad, but after two years I decided to get a job locally. I became a warehouse man for a catering firm, and also with Vikings Commissary. Then in 2016, Manila House hired me as a Storekeeper first, then after a few years I became the Purchaser.

How has the pandemic affected the purchasing department? The pandemic has affected purchasing a lot! Some basic stores were closed, I had to wait in line for hours just to get inside the supermarkets, and I am constantly dealing with the unavailability of some items.

You have been handling purchases not just for the kitchen but anything that the Club needs. What was the weirdest, most interesting, or most difficult item that you were asked to find, and why? For me the most interesting was the Filipiniana event, Ang Pagdiriwang, where we had to pick up the dessert in Pampanga. I was worried that the items might get spoiled or damaged during our travel back to Manila.

What do you look forward to the most every day? I look forward for every day to be a new experience for me. I know that it will build my character personally and professionally.

What is your dream purchase for yourself? My own farm and resort!
