Moving Forward

A

s we move on in the 1st quarter of this year, I am taking on the dual role of publisher cum editor for this double issue. Our editor, Edith Pendleton is on a much deserved sabbatical and will resume her role shortly. Meanwhile, we have additional contributing writers and we at Manila Up! International Magazine are both proud and honored to have the husband and wife team of Ruben and Janet Nepales, a famous duo. The pride of Filipinos, they are highly visible and active in the Hollywood scene. Ruben V. Nepales and Janet Susan R. Nepales are both an award-winning journalists. Ruben became the first and only Filipino to be elected as chairman of the board and board member of the prestigious Hollywood Foreign Press Association or HFPA, which votes on and presents the annual Golden Globe Awards. Janet was elected as the first Filipino Executive Secretary of the HFPA for the year 2017-2018. She was re-elected for the same position in 2018-2019. Readers are going to be mesmerized with other new writers and photographers who have joined in on our bandwagon to add zest and diversity to the contents of our magazine. Jenny Sushe, has opened our Sports section with her new reporting on her column “Sports and Entertainment.” As we grow, we are notably becoming the hub for more contributors but for now, we reserve them for our future issues. We were fortunate to have personally met some of the Wall of the World Judges for the new reality TV show on CBS “The World’s Best”. The 50 international celebrities were carefully handpicked for their famous talents and individual expertise in their fields of entertainment. Lisa Lew hosted a party for Pops Fernandez and other 49 judges at her beautiful home in Hollywood. We met Paulina Aguirre, a Latin Grammy Award winner, and Alex Wright, producer of K-Pops from Korea. Thereafter, our introductions to other renowned personalities multiplied by leaps and bounds. We met Del Mak from London, Petra Spretcher from Switzerland, Antonio Belli from Mexico and the list goes on. For this issue we had the privilege to interview them and allow you, our readers, to know them in more depth. We are presenting a batch of more judges in our future issues this year. So, on we go as we deliver more substance through these pages, absent the Editor’s Notes, we invite You become our guest editors, albeit, armchair ones! !

ome sugar, a little spice, and a heaping dash of nice – these ingredients come together in the perfect culinary culmination, but not in the form of a puff pastry. Rather an aspiring pastry chef. Alyssa Sandra Guevara is a fulltime student at Long Beach City College where she is currently pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts. The school’s website touts, “The Baking and Pastry Arts program provides students with the fundamental knowledge of Baking and Pastry principles and techniques to prepare our graduates for employment in Retail, Hotel, and Resort Bakery and Pastry kitchens”. In pursing this degree Alyssa is preparing herself for a career path that may potentially lead to airline catering, convention center and cruise line menus, supermarket sales, as well as restaurant, institutional, and hotel-type food operations. To get where she is now has not been a cakewalk though; it took grit, strength, and stepping-out of her kitchen & comfort zone.

THE SUGAR

Alyssa is the daughter of immigrant parents who came to the United States from the Philippines. Her father resided in Naic, a municipality in the province of Cavite, while her mother is from Manila. During high school, Alyssa was highly involved in an organization called Key Club, a student-led nonprofit. The club focuses on teaching and spreading four core values: leadership, character-building, caring, and inclusiveness. With her fellow members, they would often participate in community service through volunteer work. Her propensity for helping others is likely what lead to her next endeavor.

THE SPICE

In 2017 Alyssa was discovered by the producers of MPUSA (Miss Philippines USA). In her they saw great potential and ultimately convinced her to join the pageant. It was during this first-ever pageant of hers that she was honored with the crown of Miss Young Philippines USA Ambassador, in addition to placing Second Runner-Up. The first-timer’s performance did not go unnoticed. After competing, Alyssa found herself receiving many invitations to participate in fashion shows. Initially Alyssa’s dream was to become a pastry chef, and one day she intends to own her own bakery. “Ever since I was a kid, baking has always been a passion of

THE EVERYTHING NICE

Throughout her times on stage and in the spotlight, the inherent magnanimous nature of Alyssa never faltered. In fact, during the summer of 2018 she traveled to her parents’ native land of the Philippines for the first time. There she quickly began work on her charity “Pagmamahal sa mga Batang Naicenos”, founded in her father’s hometown of Naic, Cavite. The

impassioned teen visited 500 kids at Jovita Yuvienco Elementary School and 300 more at the Naic Town Plaza, where she handed-out much needed school supplies, raincoats, and slippers. The heartwarming experience left its mark on Alyssa, seeing how something so small could make so many so happy and grateful. The return to her parents’ own humble beginnings perpetuated her advocacy of giving back to the Filipino community, showcasing how small actions can make a big difference. Her own perseverance comes from the support of her family and friends. It is this network of love that motivates her the most, her future – continuing the legacy and leaving a lasting impression. “I work hard and do my best so that I can become successful and make my parents proud” she says. Well Alyssa Sandra Guevara, with your taste for generosity, there is no doubt you will cook-up a storm of success. n

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

e are excited to debut our “On and Off the Red Carpet (Focus on fashion and women) column here in Manila Up with a flashback on how Filipino designers made us proud with their creations on the red carpet at the Golden Globes as well as at the after-parties. After Fil-Am actor Darren Criss won his first Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for his role in Ryan Murphy’s awardwinning “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: An American Crime Story,” all the Pinoys went ON AND OFF THE wild. Inside the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton, at the Fox Searchlight/FX Viewing Party, or those just coming in from the red carpet --- Filipinos rejoiced. It was like winning the lottery. Knowing that Darren just made history as being the first Fil-Am to grab that Golden Globe trophy, it was a double victory. Breaking ceilings in Hollywood is tough and when Darren acknowledged his Filipina mom from Cebu, the victory hit home. Aside from Darren, we were proud to see Filipino designers showing off their talents on Hollywood’s red carpet alongside the veterans. omeday, when I am blessed to be given an opportunity to write my memoir as a Hollywood journalist, I will hole up in a beach pool villa in Kandaya Resort, a piece of paradise north of Cebu City. Away from it all, this haven facing the Visayan sea is where I want to sit down in front of my laptop to dredge up memories, reflect, and put issues, people and events in perspective. Just getting to this luxurious retreat from the Mactan Cebu International Airport already put me in a relaxed, introspective mood the first time we visited late last year. Aboard a van, I was lulled into a chill, meditative state as we left the urban bustle and passed rolling, verdant hills of farms and forests. Upon arrival in this luxurious destination in Daanbantayan, we were whisked in a golf cart to a beach pool villa. I watched sunrise and sunset from this villa, brimming with gratitude for this respite from the madness of Los Angeles, while being surrounded by nature and for once, not being hounded by the spectre of writing deadlines. I still remember the evening dips in our private pool facing the sea or just lounging while the moon kept watch. And always, music softly playing on a Bluetooth speaker. We happily resisted Kandaya’s tempting array of activities, from island-hopping, riding a horse (they have courses for first-time riders, and ponies for kids), scuba diving to kayaking and more. Instead, we just lazed by the beach, napped on a hammock under a tree and dined in the beautiful Kusina Restaurant. And sipped wine and engaged in long, often funny conversations in the Kusina Bar. From this lounge, we watched a local community troupe perform charming native dances for us and other guests at sunset. We didn’t feel the need to venture out of Kandaya’s gates since the resort, which has other types of accommodations, from deluxe rooms to garden villas, has all the amenities. I just know that when the time comes for me to pen the book, Kandaya’s tranquil atmosphere will inspire me. The calm sea that I will face as I write will relax me, inducing a flood of memories that will motivate me to type away. That’s why I can’t wait to return to Kandaya – a few or many years from now – and being able to concentrate on writing my Hollywood memoir starting when I, a wideeyed immigrant, first set foot in L.A. in 1985. n

PROVERBS 31 WOMAN BY JHOANNA DE GUZMAN INSPIRATIONAL LIVING RACHELLE CASILLAS

You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup

(Let’s make February all about Self Care)

LOS ANGELES

I

f we pay close attention to what the flight attendant says before a plane takes off, it is, “Before you assist others, always put your oxygen mask on first. ”Well, that statement has such a huge impact on me but it doesn’t really register on a literary level. In my life, I’ve learned that helping others is almost impossible to achieve if you are going through a turbulence in your life. Self-care or self-love as others might call it, is such a confusing act often misunderstood by many. Some think that it is selfish while some think that it’s wonderful because it’s about self-preservation. Either way, I think that this “self care” scheme is something everyone should learn to adapt. Words are such a powerful tool to rev up someone’s mind into embracing a new idea, and If I would associate terms to ramp up our love for self-care, I would list the words such as these: ease, rest, mindfulness, gentle, slowing down, exploration, positive, outside, breathe, calm, centered, content, peace, confident, stable, happy, laugh, smile, relax, nourishment, gratitude, the list goes on.

And this month, as we celebrate love, let’s not forget to do ourselves a favor and practice self-love first. We may do this through activities such as these: walk the dog, have a gratitude journal, eat healthy, meditate, go out more, declutter, read, watch a movie, buy flowers, water your plants, take a deep breath, talk to our loved ones, cook, smile, say no to something we don’t want to do and say yes to something we haven’t done before. All these are essential as we need to replenish our spirit, we have to be our own best friend and we have to learn on how to stand by ourselves at all times. At the end of the day, a virtuous woman should look out for herself first for her to be able to love others genuinely. Remember, you can’t pour from PROVERBS 31 an empty cup, so, take care of WOMAN yourself first. n BY JHOANNA DE

THE DISRUPTORS – THE AUDACITY OF TRUTH KAT SCHULTE

Aira Torres

Disrupting the Fashion World with Sustainability and Affordability

A

ira Torres is a woman fresh out of high school and in her first year taking Business Management in post secondary. She is also the future of our clothing world. Aira started fashion design in her grade 11 year after taking a photography course. She pursued it with a passion and when the opportunity in her senior year came up for her to join a mentorship group and learn how to build a business from scratch to marketplace, she jumped at the opportunity and ended up winning over $4000 to start her business. She wants to be a leader in the clothing world. She understands the greatest struggles when it comes to that world. Sustainability is one of her top priorities and she has built her online clothing company with a lot of thought and care for some of the major issues in fashion today. Aira chose fashion because she wanted great quality, with sustainability and affordability to exist. She loves streetwear style and casual clothing and she knows that finding sustainable business wear is a great challenge. She has brought on women to help her design her future lines so that this will all be available. Her business has some very key components that sets it apart. The greatest is her trade in an upcycling programs. People can trade in their clothing and receive a discount on future items, and the trade in clothing will be broken down to make new clothing, and to have a way to give back to the less fortunate. This will help clothing stay out of landfills and be usable and beautifully upcycled. Per diem means everyday or per day. She wanted to create fashion for everyday wear. That means not only versatile options but also well made so it can last years and years. Quality means so much to Aira and for someone who is still in her teens, she is setting an amazing THE DISRUPTORS example for the world. She has researched and THE AUDACITY made sure that her manufacturers were up to OF TRUTH her standards. BY KAT SCHULTE What drives Aira is sustainability and PHOTOS BY ERIK FISCHER

helping the less fortunate. She has a great big heart and she wants to lead with it as she continues forward in this world. What helps her through balancing full time school, a part time job and growing a side business is that she is doing what she loves. She also believes the greatest key to her success now and moving forward is having a great support system of family, friends and mentors. Aira is such an incredible young entrepreneur, she is an inspiration and also an example of living your dreams. Not waiting to see if maybe they can come true, but taking action on them and jumping head first into the unknown to explore what is possible in a human life. Life is about the journey and not just the destination. If we always wait to be happy then we are always going to be waiting for happiness. Act now and live a joyous life right from the get go. Aira is learning this through one of the best ways she can. Most entrepreneurs have to figure everything out and make all the mistakes on their own. But Aira

has people in her corner and she is still having to find her way to run her business, but she has support all around her. She is a truly incredible woman. Right now you can find her first designs on her site. Please check out her site and support this amazing woman. Programs like the ones she entered in high school can’t happen without a lot of support from the staff at the school, the unsung heroes that support the budding minds of our future. So we would like to thank the people involved in making the mentorship group happen. Thank you so much everyone involved; including but not limited to John Tyler, Frances Monteleone, Jeff Meville, Sarah Wethered, Mrs. Mcnulty, Mrs. Mast and Mrs. Hunt and School District 40! The future generations are amazing, and they need to be supported so they can go into this new age, having all the opportunities known to them, so they can thrive. They are the next generation that will affect this world. And I can’t wait to see what they will create. You can find out more about Aira through her website, social media and the interview that we did all listed below. he passion I have for being in front of the camera, and walking the runway has been burning like fire within my heart ever since I was little. When I was first introduced to acting as a kid I started with little home movies where I played a variety of different characters from Cinderella to my dog, and when I got a little older I started in modeling, where I walked the runway in the American Girl fashion show styled as “Caroline”, and since then I have modeled for many great stylists including: Kiki Wang, Tommy Lee, Jovani Terani, Sherri Hill, and many more phenomenal designers that all have such unique and beautiful designs. So, these experiences as well being in multiple theater shows ranging from “A year with Frog and Toad” to “Thoroughly Modern Millie”

led me to landing my starring role in front of the camera in the film “A Turn in the Sun” when I was just 12 years old. As soon as I finished filming, I was hooked, and since then I have been a part of many more shows and films. I could not be any more thankful for my family because they really supported my career, and when it led me to L.A. they stood right there behind me every step of the way as they continue to do today, and I couldn’t be any more grateful. I believe that it was fate that brought me to finding certain people in the business, that really saw the drive and the love for what I do in both acting and modeling that they took a chance on me, and I could not be any more grateful for them as well. And I can’t wait to see where my career takes me next... an Oscar perhaps? I am so honored to be voted as Model Of The Year at the Kiss The Monkeys UNLEESHED Holiday Benefit Event. I am humbled at how many lives that Kiss The Monkeys | Kiss The Mermaids touch with their benefits and amazed at how RaQuel Sanchez and Alex Harris provide a platform for their members to share and perform their talents to help others.

’m so sick of that same old love, feels like I’ve blown apart — I’m so sick of that same old love, the kind that breaks your heart,” are the words from the popular Selena Gomez song titled, “Same Old Love.” Have you ever considered your pattern in love relationships? Have your relationships left you feeling empty, angry and lonely over and over again? The painful reality is that many people find it difficult to stop to observe what they accept, tolerate and come into agreement within their love relationships. If you discovered that you are sick of that same old love and that you have had enough, then here are three ways to break your pattern of toxic love:

MENTAL WELLNESS BY JANIE LACY

1

Take A Relationship Inventory: We cannot break toxic love relationship patterns until we first become an observer of them. It is important to stop and assess what relational repetitions you have continuously recreated throughout your history. This can be a very difficult and painful step to take in looking at your own behaviors in your relationships, and to also recognize the emotional template that you may be unconsciously reinventing. The help of a trusted friend or a professional therapist may be very helpful in working this step because they can look at your relational history with an objective viewpoint.

2

Create a supportive network: When you are trying to make life-changing decisions to break old relational behavior patterns, you cannot do it alone. Friends who understand can serve as a supplementary life-support system as you make painful changes to foster healthier romantic relationships in your future. They can be the person that you can call when you so desperately want to reach out to a romantic partner who you are trying to move on from in your life. They can also hold you accountable to prevent you from acting out from your obsessive thoughts as you withdraw from the toxic love relationship.

3

Heal from “Unfinished Business:” It is extremely important that you look at where your patterns may have originated and to also examine your emotional stuck points (the parts of you that are still immature and have not matured) in order to heal from toxic relationship patterns. If you have experienced repetitive patterns of childhood emotional neglect, you may be looking to fill emptiness and a void that cannot be healed unless you enter into a process of discovering the things that you needed but did not get in your developing years that may have contributed to your dysfunctional love patterns. These steps are very difficult and can be painful at times to work through. However, it will be worth it when you arrive on the other side! You will need to stay committed to the process even when the work feels too hard if you’re going to make the necessary changes that will break your dysfunctional relational patterns. A broken heart causes a lot of grief and can make daily life challenging. If the love relationship is addictive and toxic, the break-up can be even more devastating physically, mentally and spiritually. You can build a better understanding of your own history and make the necessary life changes to be happy and healthy in your romantic relationships when you commit to breaking your toxic love patterns and when you get sick enough of that same old love. Tired of the same pain with a different face that keeps showing up in your relationships? What is it about you that keeps attracting them over and over again? You know you are made for much more despite the “you are too much or not enough” voices that plagues you. Break the bonds that holds you back from living an unfulfilled life. n JANIE LACY, LMHC, NCC, CSAT RELATIONSHIP TRAUMA EXPERT, PSYCHOTHERAPIST, & TV COMMENTATOR LIFE COUNSELING SOLUTIONS 670 N. LONDON

The most visited science, technology, engineering and medicine museum in Europe is the Science Museum on Exhibition Road, London. One thing that is good about the museums in London is that they are open to the public for free.. The Science Museum has about 15,000 objects to see at any given time, and with more than 220,000 pieces in total. Every object is enough for one to write a whole article - to describe the ingenuity and intelligence of human beings since time began. For now, our area of focus is “Exploring the Space Gallery”. The planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and several constellations of stars, can be seen through the naked eyes depending locations in the hemisphere. But Galileo Galelli’s telescope (a replica is in the museum) broke through in astronomical observations in many ways. One confirms the theory of Copernicus that the Earth orbits the Sun. The actual Apollo 10 spacecraft that carried the astronauts Thomas Stafford, Eugene Cernan and John Young to the moon and back in 1969 is in the museum too. The projection of the Sun

KINGDOM ADVENTURES BY GILDA PINEDA DIONELA

I have enjoyed stargazing since I was a kid. There was nothing to do in my remote village, and with no electricity, it was totally dark as soon as the sun sets. We just ate boiled peanuts, watermelon seeds and peanut brittle, among several organic snacks our grandmother served while we looked up and counted the stars beyond dark cloudless nights. This is the reason that my attention was drawn so much towards the Space Gallery. I failed at counting the stars, but the fact that God knows the number of the stars, and named each one of them, is enough to make every human being on Earth praise and worship Him. In one of the busiest, modern cities of the world like London, people hardly see any stars because of the lights in the buildings, neon lights and many other sources of artificial light. And, there are many different things to do after the sun sets. Without gazing at the sky, the museum displays the sun and planets with a brief information about each of them. Here I share what I learned about the stars and their Creator: Constellations of Stars and the Bible Astronomy is a natural science that studies physics, chemistry and the movements of celestial bodies such as planets, stars, galaxies, asteroids, suns and moons, among many other celestial bodies.. In contrast, Astrology is a belief system that the movement of the sun, moon and stars affects the character and lives of people. Astronomy is a tool to appreciate the vast creation of God, but Astrology (prophecy through sun, stars and moon) is an abomination to God. Even modern Astronomy confirms the inerrancy of the Bible. While visiting the museum, I noticed one display with the word “Pleiades”, which I had also read about in the Bible. The book of Job was written around 2000 BC or about 4000 years ago. He acknowledged that God is the one who controls the seasons and star constellations such as Pleaides, Orion and Bear. It was the Lord Himself who challenged Job, asking him whether he could direct the movements of stars and constellations. It is the story of a good man suffering, not caused by God, but with God’s permission. It is as good as saying that God will not allow us to undergo suffering beyond our ability to overcome it. Because (when we put our faith in Him through His Son and Messiah) He is for us, with us and in us. In another book of the Bible, 34

Amos arrived in Israel as a prophet, around 760-750 BC, when there was so much social injustice in the land. He was sent by God to be responsible for their apostasy and inhumanity, calling them to come back in repentance to God. It was a time when justice was twisted - making life difficult for the oppressed - and righteousness was treated as filth. Amos describes God as the one who created the stars and constellations such as Pleaides and Orion. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul mentioned Castor and Pollux and in Acts 28:11, also known as “The twins” or “Gemini” constellations. Paul was not a fault finder. He didn’t mind the Gemini figurehead because he knew salvation is by grace through faith and had nothing to do with the images made of wood, especially if it is only an ornament and not worshipped. Today these names are included in the official constellations of stars by the International Astronomy Union (IAU). “The Bear” or Arcturus is called Ursa Major; “Orion” is Orion, the hunter; “Pleaides” or Seven Sisters are included; “Gemini” is the Twins. The Bible was written even before the invention of the telescope, yet its description of the position of the stars is accurate. The sky is God’s canvass to deliver a message

to man that even the stars obeys as He commands. I am like everyone else in that there comes a time of sadness, loneliness and a point of doubt that the Bible is really the Word of God. It was 8th December, 2010, and I was on one of my adventures in London. It was snowing heavily, and the surroundings were so dark because of snow clouds. There was no transportation. Trains were severely delayed on the lines I usually took, in that instance the Overground Line. It was the moment that I relied too much that the Bible is the Word of God and was disappointed, but not because the train took ages to come. I was waiting for far more than the train. In my disappointment I decided not to read my Bible ever again. Since there was nothing else to do, grumpily I took my Bible and promised myself that it would be the last time I would read it. Then I read, “I will make you inhabited as in former times and do better for you than at your beginnings. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.” I had been believing this verse secretly for nearly six years at that time, but it just wasn’t happening. I was shocked and thought it was just one of those many coincidences. I opened the Bible once again and the Holy Spirit took me to Daniel 12:3 (KJV), “And they that be wise

shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever”. My eyes were full of tears, and when I looked up into the sky, there was a single bright shining star amid thick snow cloud. I had been looking at the sky way too long for me to recognize whether it was a light from an airplane or a real star. I am sure it was a star. And my love for the Bible came back again. I am not deluded enough to think that the star appeared for my eyes only. I am sure if there was anyone next to me waiting for the train and looked up, they would have seen it too, but it may not have meant anything to them. In the same way, when God showed the sky to Abraham, He asked him to count the stars because that is how many his descendants would be. Other people in the same place could see the stars God showed Abraham but it didn’t mean anything to them because they did not have faith and a personal relationship with God, like Abraham.

The Bright Morning Star Venus is known as the “morning star” because we can see it with our naked eye as the brightest star. But it is not a star. It is a planet. It seems not to twinkle but gives a steady silvery glow all throughout the night. It is 15 times brighter than the brightest star. It is also called “the morning and evening star”, because it is the first you see after sunset and the last star you see before sunrise. Jesus (Yeshua) is called “the Bright Morning Star”. In Revelation 22:16 (KJV) He says: “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the Bright and Morning Star.” Stars are some of the objects known about since the beginning of time that we can see for ourselves at the present time. Jesus is also called “the First and the Last”. The heavenly bodies are just one kind of the many evidences of the existence of God and His creation, as found in the Bible. The world might call those who believe in God, and who believe that He sent His begotten Son Jesus Christ (the Messiah) as the only Way, “brainless”, or “crazy”. In fact, it is the other way around. We might not have a star of fame in Hollywood, but God said we are wise and will shine bright like stars forever and ever, if we believe in Him. Jesus is the Light that shines brightest forever more and the One who brings light on the inside of us. n

Gia also produced international film and cultural festivals. MUIM: Can you tell me a little something about you, where were came from, and, how was your childhood? Family background? Education? of my language, history, culture, spiritual beliefs of my nation, and literal military intervention. December 1618th 1996 were Independence Days for Kazakhstan. Then of course we lived through the hardships in the 1990s after the fall of Soviet Union when the newly formed independent Kazakhstan was building its economy. All of that made me and many others true survivors.” “I couldn’t be more proud of the family I grew up in. Both of my parents were renowned scientists. panel of judges and books that would shed light onto history of many different nations. Since the age of 5 I was studying music, played violin and piano, later acquiring a Master’s degree in Music Science from Kazakhstan National Conservatory. Though I never worked as a musician, that vast knowledge always helps me in my current profession” MUIM: How do you describe yourself? Who/how did you get into film production. Did you get formal education in filmmaking? Gia: “I’m a learner, that’s my passion. I love to learn something new everyday. I’m a conversationalist, who truly enjoys deep interesting discussions, exploring fascinating minds of people. The intention to become part of film community came to me when I was a kid but because of what was happening in my life and my country I couldn’t act on it till later. I moved to LA in 2003 to become a filmmaker. That was a very conscious decision on my part. It was also the bravest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I basically packed my two little kids and moved to a city where I didn’t know a single person. I had no support mechanism whatsoever, and I was an emigrant single mother. I still remember sleepless nights worrying about the unknown future for myself and my children. It all worked out eventually.” MUIM: What are your beliefs? What shaped your character the most, and guides you to become a better person that you are today? Gia: “Great question. What I’ve learned over time is that the most important belief is the belief in yourself. That means that first and foremost I had to accept myself without any judgment. Then really fall in love with myself fully and unconditionally. That gave me strength to take one step at the time into becoming the person I am today. Another huge support is the spiritual foundation. I believe in oneness of everything and everyone. That belief helps me to stay patient with people and situations, and helps me to truly listen to intuition. The other belief is belief in the people I surrounded myself with. I truly have amazing friends and the team I’m working with. That’s an incredible blessing”. MUIM: What’s keeping you busy right now? And why are you in Los Angeles? “LA has become home for me. Of course I go back to Kazakhstan every chance I get, and I have a film production company there but I really love the international and multicultural nature of this City of Angels. It gives me the opportunity to create joint

40

productions with producers from different countries. For example, I’m finishing up post production for an action film I’ve jointly produced with Mongolian producers. And my company here in LA always looks for an opportunity to work with producers from all over the world. For instance, we have a fully developed script that we tailored for shooting in Manila. Who knows, maybe we will be coming soon to the beautiful Philippines to shoot a movie :) “. MUIM: Do you enjoy where you are at right now career wise? Do you consider it that you are at the peak of your career?

With the grandson of the legendary Omar Sharif, Omar Sharif Jr

panel of judges Gia: “There is never a peak I think for creative people. That’s the beauty of being a film producer/director. Each project is a new high, new learning experience, new peak. Yes, I enjoy my life, enjoy what I do and really look forward to every new encounter and steps into the next project.” MUIM: What more would you like to achieve despite your success? Gia: “I’d like to direct more films that make this world a better place, films that either shed light onto situations, issues, or, inspire people. The other thing is that I’d like to help filmmakers out there to achieve their own success by giving them true knowledge about creating projects, financing and distributing them. Our company Hollywood Film Academy® has launched a podcast (YouTube, iTunes, Google Play) where I interview the most incredible industry professionals and Hollywood celebrities. We pass real, practical knowledge that I believe will help professionals all over the world.” MUIM: What is your advocacy? Are you passionate about helping women or children? What charity would like you to be involved in? Gia: “I’ve been very passionate about women’s rights. In fact, my latest feature film was on the subject of economically forced polygamy on women. That issue, unfortunately, is very present in many countries. It’s when wealthy men form additional families despite the fact that they have a legal wife. It’s truly damaging for both the legal wives and for younger generations of women. Young girls are growing up now not dreaming of true love anymore, they dream of “sugar daddies “ and those girls are future mothers. My film’s title is “My Husband’s Wife”. It was one of the front runners last year for the best foreign language category at the Golden Globes.” MUIM: What are your motivations, or inspirations? Gia: “My beautiful parents and children. Both of my parents have made a transition onto the other side but whenever I do something I often consult with them in my heart and spirit. My children are my joy and inspiration. I’m a very lucky mother and that’s a source of my everyday happiness.” MUIM: How did you become a judge of “The World’s Best” talent show? Gia: ”I am a head of an honorary consulate of Kazakhstan in Los Angeles. That is not a diplomatic position but it enables me to help build cultural bridges between the USA and Kazakhstan. One day I received a phone call from a CBS production team telling me about an upcoming show

and that they were looking for an expert. They found my number on the official directory of honorary counsuls. They had no idea who I was, thinking I’m another diplomat. So I told them about myself and they obviously Googled my name and asked for references to make sure that I’m someone who’s known in Kazakhstan. And then I was offered this wonderful opportunity. The show was fun but the most amazing thing about it was that we, the 50 international judges, have truly become a family. We constantly talk and miss each other, we share pictures and videos and use every chance to get together. Every one of the judges are amazing accomplished professional. For example Philippines were represented by the gorgeous Pops Fernandez, who is just beautiful inside and out.” MUIM: Through your life’s journey, what can you spare words of wisdom to your fans, to the world? Gia: “Find your purpose by following your passion. Be patient, achieve your goals one step at the time. Love yourself and people unconditionally, and enjoy every moment of your life.” n

el Mak will be appearing as a World Judge on a new global TV talent competition show called “The World’s Best” hosted by James Corden and featuring American judges Drew Barrymore, RuPaul Charles, and Faith Hill. It will premiere on CBS after the Superbowl on the 3rd of February.

MUIM: Can you tell me a little something about your childhood? Family background? Education? DM: I was born and bred in London, UK, my parents are both Chinese from Hong Kong and Malaysia so I got to see a fair bit of the East growing up. My parents did an amazing job working hard to put me through good education, they used to run a Chinese take out in London and I was that kid you’d see behind the counter watching TV and interacting with customers. I ended up going to one of the top universities in the UK and graduated with a Masters degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering

This person I tagged along with, ended up asking me to be her dance partner at the university’s Latin and Ballroom Club and we competed on the university circuit for a year. After graduating from university I decided Engineering wasn’t for me and looked for a graduate job in Marketing. Whilst searching for this, I had more time to dance and eventually started to get scouted by dance agencies, offered work to dance, and, joined a hip hop dance company called Culture Shock. I thought if I can make money doing what I love, why not pursue it? So I ended up moving to New York to train at Broadway Dance Center for 6 months learning everything from Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, and African to House & Hip Hop. After completing the program I returned to the UK and became a full time professional dancer and then eventually where I am now as a choreographer. MUIM: What are your beliefs? What shaped your character the most? Who or what guides you to become the better person that you are today? DM: My strongest belief is always strive to be happy. Having gone through an unconventional route to where I am now, I believe that there’s no limit to what we can achieve or be. Growing from all your experiences is very important whether they are good or bad. You learn more from the failures and they give you the means to become even better.

MUIM: How would you describe yourself? Who and how did you get into dancing? DM: As an East Asian growing up in a multicultural city like London, I have been fortunate to be exposed to many cultures and people from all walks of life. I have a very open mind to life and love, interacting and sharing experiences with all those I cross paths with. I fell into dancing randomly in my 3rd year at university by tagging along with a university friend who lived in my student residence to a breaking (aka break dance) class at the world famous Pineapple Studio in London. I guess I was first interested in this particular style of dance as it was athletic and dynamic. I grew up watching Hong Kong Kung Fu movies featuring the likes of Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee & Jet Li, loving the fight choreography and sequences. I studied martial arts since I was 10 years old, so the coordination and balance were well matched to break dance too! The challenging part was connecting the moves to music. 44

I am an Elite World Judge for Hip Hop International so I often travel the world judging dance competitions and teaching. I will be in the UK, France and Canada over the next few months too. MUIM: When do you think you will stop what you’re doing right now in your life? DM: In terms of being in the Creative Arts, I don’t think I will ever stop as I love the challenge of coming up with something new and different that can not only change perception but can also be enjoyed. Obviously, being in dancing the body has its limits the older you get, but the knowledge and experiences gained can be transferred into many visual based art-forms. I can see myself

moving into directing of some sort, potential for film as everyone loves being transported into another world and making the mind wander. MUIM: If given another chance to change some things that happened in your life, what would they be? DM: I wouldn’t change any part of my life, I have ended up where I am through the journey it has naturally taken me. Yes, there have been difficult times, and I could have made decisions that could have changed my route, but despite this, I do believe everything happens for a reason and if you stay true to yourself and everyone around you, you will eventually find the path that is for you and most importantly be happy! MUIM: What words of wisdom can you offer in general, that will help towards the path to success? DM: Human connection. The digital age is great, we have access to everything and everyone. However, it can still be a very lonely place with a lot of noise where everyone is sharing their best self. For me, nothing replaces actually physically meeting people and getting to know them, go see, embrace and experience things. The memories made will be the ones that stay with you forever. n

MUIM: How would you describe yourself? How did you get into film directing? AB: I’m a storyteller. I love making people laugh! I’ve focused most of my work that includes TV episodes, commercials, and virals entertaining people. When someone watches what I do, I want them forget about their problems and have a great time. Right after film school, I got lucky that a few shorts I did, went globally viral and were screened at various film festivals that opened the doors for me.

panel of judges World’s Best” has really pushed my comfort zone. Not knowing when James Corden would ask for my input has kept me alert at all times. I’m used to being on the other side of the camera. To suddenly see all the camera pointed at me has really forced me grow and not be shy. Aside of meeting the amazing judges from around the world, that’s the one thing I value the most about this experience. MUIM:Who is your role model or where do you get your inspirations? What is your motivation? AB: I have three filmmaking role models. Steven Spielberg, because he is the one that inspired me to become a director by making my favorite movies like Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones. Second, Billy Wilder. His ability to tell compelling stories that are as hilarious as they are heartbreaking is something I aspire to do. And last but not least, fellow Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón. His path is what dreams are made of.

He’s been able to have an eclectic career of directing highly commercial films like Harry Potter followed by an intimate sci-fi that pushed the VFX industry, and also managed to do independent films like “Roma” (my favorite movie of 2018) and “Y Tu Mama También” that celebrates Mexico while also reflecting on it. MUIM:Do you have ongoing projects? AB: I have two features in development. An action/ adventure comedy set at the Latino division of FOX that starts shooting in the fall. And a horror/comedy to be shot independently sometime this summer in LA. I’m also going back to direct for the Netflix hit series “La Casa de las Flores” in season 2. Which made me very excited as the cast and crew became like my family in season 1. MUIM:Do you reside in Los Angeles? How do you find living in Los Angeles? AB: I live in LA and I really enjoy it. It’s a city full of energy where you can do and find anything you want. Hiking, surfing, skiing? We got it — Italian, Mexican, Filipino award-winning food? We also got it. The only bad thing is... traffic and being away from my family. LA is a city where, if you work hard, your dreams can come true. MUIM:What are your plans in the next few years, career wise? AB: I’m actively working on directing projects in all mediums: TV, commercials and movies. In five years, I hope to have found a balance between the three and have managed to get bigger and better projects. My plan is to do a studio movie, have my own TV series, and direct a Super Bowl commercial. Hopefully in the next five years, I’ll be in the path of doing all three! MUIM:What can you advise who are starting in film making who have the same ambitions and passions as yours? AB: “Never stop believing in yourself!” It is an advice I got from my parents. To be able to make it, you have to convince a massive amount of people to give you a chance and most of the time, it won’t happen and you’ll feel like a failure. So the more you believe in yourself, the easier it will be to convince other people you have what it takes. And also, if you plan to be a director, take many screenwriting lessons! When I was in film school, I didn’t realize how much I would have to write in order to get directing jobs. n

INSPIRATIONAL LIVING RACHELLE CASILLAS

The Power of

Love LOS ANGELES

W

hitney Houston sang it best with the lyrics, “find your strength in love” in the song “The greatest Love of All”. Love is so powerful it can take you to a place of complete joy, excitement and happiness, and then in a split second take you to wearing sweat pants for a month, eating chocolate and crying yourself to sleep because your “lover” cheated on you and is in love with someone else. Oh, what love can do! In the month of February millions of people celebrate the theme of love on the Holiday, Valentine’s Day; including 62% percent of the population in the United States. If you don’t know the roots of this celebration, this may be intriguing for you. The holiday started in ancient Roman Empire as a Fertility Celebration in mid-February called “Lupercalia”. Later the Christian Church chose MidFebruary for Saint Valentine’s Day to “Christianize” it. The very first Valentine Greeting Cards appeared in the 15th Century. Then in the 17th Century Great Britain started the exchanging of Valentine Greeting Cards and soon the practice caught on to the United States. Today, it is one of the top consumer holidays, with an estimated 1 Billion greeting cards, (more than any other Holiday except for Christmas). Do not forget the estimated 220 million roses that are produced, and endless boxes of chocolates sold - bringing an overall estimated of $20 Billion dollars spent on this Holiday. According to numerous professional studies, from birth babies who are deprived contact comfort, (touch, intimacy, love) particularly during the first six months after they are born, grow up to be psychologically

damaged. With that being said, it proves that love is a major part of human beings from birth; and society should have more programs that promote love as a priority every single day, from our schools to our businesses, and communities. In the First Book of Corinthians, Chapter 13 Apostle Paul writes one of the most beautiful ways to describe it, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” If only we as human beings practiced that type of love as described by Apostle Paul, I believe this world would be a better place, don’t you? Instead of just buying candies or flowers that day, let us go the extra mile and help show the true meaning of love by pledging to show love more to others for the year 2019. Love is to be celebrated every single day, and not just on Valentine’s Day. (Hello, who wouldn’t want chocolate every single day and a note that said, “I love you, just because of who you are”? If you want to get even more in the mood to celebrate love, watch one of my highly recommended movies, The Notebook, Titanic, or Sweet Home Alabama. Remember to keep your love walk strong daily INSPIRATIONAL and say “I love you” more LIVING often; now that is a true way BY RACHELLE to celebrate life and love! n CASILLAS

What’s next for the Legendary Manny Pacquiao? By Jenny Sushe

“M

y journey in this sport is still continuing. I’ve accomplished everything I’ve wanted to, but I also want to continue to keep my name at the top. Even at 40 years old I can still show the best of Manny Pacquiao. I’m going to give the fans the speed and power that they are you used to seeing.”.

Now that Pacquiao has defended his welterweight title against Adrian Broner at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, what’s next for the legendary Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao? Both Pacquiao and Mayweather had said in late 2018 that they were going to have a rematch but now with Mayweather being non-committal and Mayweather’s advisor, Leonard Ellerbe squashing all rumors of a rematch, “He’s retired, he has no interest in doing that”, said Ellerbe at the Pacquiao/Broner press conference in January. Who will be next for Pacquiao in the welterweight division?

manilaupmagazine.com

SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT BY JENNY SUSHE

Keith Thurman Keith Thurman seems to be the frontrunner in the Pacquiao fight sweepstakes. Thurman (29-0, 22 KO’s), is coming off of a unanimous victory over Josesito Lopez. After a 22-month layoff because of multiple injuries, Thurman did not look like the same fighter. He circled around the ring most of the fight and the killer instinct that earned him the nickname “One Time” did not emerge. But now that he has had a warmup fight after such a long layoff, Thurman thinks he’s ready for Pacman. “He’s not the young Manny Pacquiao that he once was,” Thurman said. “But he still is a great, world class fighter. If we get that fight, we’d be happy to do it for ourselves and the fans.”

Errol Spence Jr. Assuming Errol Spence is able to defeat undefeated but undersized Mickey Garcia on March 16th, a fight with Pacquiao is a legit possibility. Pacquiao left longtime promoter Top Rank Boxing and signed with Premier Boxing Champions, which also represents Spence. With that signing, it has made it possible for a fight. Spence (24-0, 21 KO’s) is consistently near the top of most pound-for-pound rankings. Spence is a large welterweight standing nearly six feet tall making him a difficult fight for Pacquiao. “Personally, I don’t know why people are discounting him,” Spence has said of Pacquiao. “I think Manny Pacquiao is still a top 3 fighter in the

welterweight division. Even if he is not the same fighter he was, he is still a fantastic fighter. He’s quick, he’s fast, he’s explosive, he’s awkward. I think Manny Pacquiao can beat 95% of these welterweights out there. I just think that he’s a great fighter to me.”

Mickey Garcia Another PBC boxer with a pound-for-pound pedigree, Mickey Garcia (39-0, 30 KO’s), is moving up two weight classes to fight Errol Spence on March 16th. Garcia is a natural 135 pound fighter. This fight is very doable and rather exciting considering that both Garcia and Pacquiao are undersized welterweights. Garcia at the age of 19 and Pacquiao at his prime, were sparring partners. That alone makes the story line for a possible fight between the two.” “I think that would be a huge fight (against Pacquiao),” Garcia said in early January. He’s (Pacquiao) still competitive. Although he is older, he’s still a world champion and still wants the best. That’s just the way he is. He’s a competitor.”

Terence Crawford A fight for Pacquiao against Terence Crawford, (34-0, 25 KO’s) is a long shot. Crawford fights for Top Rank Boxing and Pacquiao fights for their rival Premier Boxing Champions. The rival promotional companies have disdain for each other and have little history of working together to make fights happen. Crawford has been considered a top pound-for-pound fighter for the past few years at the junior welterweight and welterweight divisions. Despite this he has shown little interest in a Manny Pacquiao fight. “Like I said before, I’m not worrying about Pacquiao right now,” a frustrated Crawford said. If that fight presents itself and it comes to fruition, then we’ll handle that. But until then, I don’t need to get into it.” n

ean Devlin is Filipino American? Yes. His mother is Pilar Seurat (Rita Hernandez) born in Manila. His father is actor, writer producer Don Devlin. The first time I met Dean was at Sony Studios in 1999. Community advocate and Sony executive Fritz Friedman took the helm of organizing the Filipino Americans in Hollywood to help the WWII Filipino Veterans achieve genuine equity. And why not? Dean’s father is a veteran. His mother played Asian, Hispanic and Native American characters. She was cast in the 60s --Star Trek, Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Wild Wild West, Maverick, etc. Director and producer Dean Devlin is the chairman and CEO of Electric Entertainment which created the blockbluster films --- Stargate, Godzilla and Independence Day. On television, he produced Leverage and The Librarians. He also produced the critically acclaimed Who Killed the Electric Car? Devlin has been producing for 25 years. He said that his father, Don had an enormous passion for electric vehicles so he named the company Electric Entertainment. “We are currently shooting Season 2 of The Outpost for CW, in Serbia. It will be coming out this summer.” His latest feature film is the thriller Bad Samaritan starring David Tennant and Robert Sheehan. Devlin directed and produced the movie last May 2018 on

2000 screens through Electric’s distribution arm. On the question of the visibility of Filipinos in the film industry Dean stressed that Filipinos need to support Filipino artists if they want them to become more visible with a viable audience block. “Tyler Perry spent many years touring black communities across the country and built up a large audience who came to support his many projects. Filipinos need to do the same thing if they want to see themselves represented more.” I remember running into Dean and Fritz when CAPE organized a big fundraiser for the victims of typhoon Yolanda in Leyte. Dean without hesitation declared that he will double whatever the Coalition of Asian Pacifics for Entertainment raised that night. I listened to him speak at a discussion with members of the FilAm Creative, an organization of independent filmmakers and artists. He encouraged them to have the passion to make films and even took the time to have photos with those in attendance. Oh yeah, Dean ON THE BEAT Devlin is definitely Filipino BY FE KOONS American. WALK MY WAY BY MAYENNE CARMONA

I

Bea Alonso’s Beauty Regimen at Aivee Institute

t was a very busy afternoon at the Aivee Institute in BGC as it was “Dr. Aivee Day”, meaning, the good doctor was present for consultation and treatments. She spreads her days among her other clinics in Alabang, MegaMall and soon in QC. While waiting for my turn to consult with her, I caught sight of a svelte, beautiful young woman walking towards one of the treatment rooms. So as not to appear so obviously curious, I waited for her to enter the room before I satisfied my curiosity. “ Who is she? She is so attractive! Her skin is tight and smooth, what are her treatments? Her body looks toned, how can I achieve that too? “. My questions came out like bullets from a machine gun. “I will have what she is having” I declared with conviction. This remark made the receptionists and a lady doctor break into laughter. After the laughter had died down, the lady doctor who was present replied “She is Bea Alonso, the star of the hit movie “Kasal!”. Today, she is having Venus Freeze, one of her favorite treatments. Other days, she does the Jet Peel Infusion Therapy or sometimes she has the Revive Facial”. I took note of her beauty treatments so I could ask Dr. Aivee what is good for my skin. I am constantly bothered with “melasma” which appears on my cheeks when I go under the sun. Dr. Aivee explained that these may be Bea’s preferred treatments for the moment but they can change in a few months when more cuttingedge beauty machines come into the picture. Being in the beauty business, Dr. Aivee is aware that movie stars owe it to their adoring fans to look good all the time. Fans may love you today but when you lose your looks, they could be your worst critics. “Dr Z ( referring to her husband) and I give them the best advice on how to maintain their beauty so as not to fall short of their fans’ expectations. There is a lot of pressure in being a

beautiful celebrity like Bea Alonso who has thousands of adoring fans. Here in Aivee Institute , we help them stay beautiful for as long as they want to. Venus Freeze is one of the treatments I recommend to Bea for now, aside from Revive facial and Jet peel Infusion therapy. “ What is Venus Freeze? skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles by using heat to boost collagen production. This helps restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance. Downtime: There is no downtime as treatments are virtually painless, with many users comparing it to a relaxing hot stone massage. You can return to resume your schedule immediately. Venus Freeze is of radio frequency which is safe and effective for all skin tones. What to Expect: Sessions usually last 30 minutes 66

depending on the area being treated. One can use Venus Freeze also on the body to tighten body parts like arms, legs, and tummy. Six to eight treatment sessions per area are recommended weekly in order to see maximum results. How it works: Venus FreezeTM works by using a combination of Multi-Polar Radio Frequency and Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields. The two technologies work in unison to safely and comfortably heat the tissue under the surface of your skin, which encourages the body to produce more collagen and elastin fibers. This process results in firmer, smoother skin that looks noticeably more youthful on the surface. The Jet Peel Infusion Therapy treatment is an allnatural, virtually painless skin treatment procedure that dramatically improves the appearance and texture of your skin. Using water and oxygen, this treatment exfoliates skin; improving texture, tone, hydration and circulation. Jet PeelTM has several benefits: deep cleanses, exfoliates, hydrates and oxygenates the skin. Infusions of vitamins and other ingredients to treat specific skin issues can also be added. Revive facial - This radiance reviver includes a gentle yet intensive hyperbaric oxygen therapy to cleanse and an oxygen hydropeel to remove dead skin cells while loosening clogged impurities. This is followed by an infusion of vitaminized oxygen spray to improve cell regeneration, reviving even the dullest skin back to its radiant, glowing self. Per Dr. Aivee’s advice, I am now trying Venus Freeze and I am on my 3rd session. I can already feel my skin getting tighter. My laugh lines are still there but I was assured that after a few sessions more they would diminish. The Jet Peel Infusion Therapy is exfoliating the brown spots ( melasma) on my cheeks so they are lighter now. And last but not the least, the Revive Facial is a must! The oxygen hydropeel removed my dead skin cells making my skin glow. Seeing Bea Alonso at Aivee Institute doing her favorite beauty treatments improved my skin a thousand fold! It was my lucky day! n For Inquiries: call the Aivee Institute, 0917 7283838; or Customer Service Hotline 5731420 ; email- info@ aivee.ph
