had a wonderful vacation in the Philippines. The trip was quite an adventure. We went to different cities within Metro Manila. We first stayed in a now densely populated area in Taguig, Rizal and moved on to the Mall of Asia (MOA). Everywhere we went, the influx of Chinese ”millenials”, penetrated the scene in online gaming. There are thousands of them billeted in condos. It was fascinating. From Manila, we travelled to Palawan, where the enchanting, majestic islands are situated. Puerto Princesa has the world famous underground river. Inside the cave countless bats are housed. Their pungent odor welcomed us as soon as we entered the cave. Funny enough the guide said the entrance of the cave was their ‘bathroom’. We later listened to a fascinating narrative folklore about the history of the cave. Fast forward: Island hopping was exhilarating with the island of El Nido, whose blue green clear water was inviting. So beautiful! Moving from El Nido to Coron, another island found us swimming and snorkeling, considered the best things to do while in Coron. Our last stop before going back to Manila was a luxury stay in Bluewater Maribago Resorts in Cebu City. The laid back atmosphere was much needed after our exhilarating trip to Palawan. (VIP access was extended to us by Pete Dacuycuy and Rhyz Boac, General Manager). The Philippines has a multitude of wonderful islands. It was an adventurous trip. With great, clear water and beautiful enchanting lagoons, island hopping, a must if you visit Palawan. Aside from the beauty of the islands, Manila City, the major metropolitan hub is full of vivacious socialites and life is filled with laughter of both fashionistas and trend setters alike. The cosmopolitan lifestyle of the locale is enviable. I love to be around them, with nary a care nor worries but to look forward to attending another event the next day. It reminded me of the lyrics of a song “I Love the Nightlife”. Ahh... a pampered lifestyle in Manila. The business environment is good in Manila. We had the pleasure to share a private dinner with the COO and President of Philippine Airlines, Mr. Jaime J. Bautista, known as JJB to his close friends. Being quite a busy body, I was so delighted that he acceded to my invitation. I send special thanks to Charisse Chuidian for arranging that special dinner with cuisine specially prepared for us by Chef Bong Jun Choi of Crystal Jade, City of Dreams Hotel and Resort.

We had the luxury to be billeted at the Crimson hotel in Alabang City, just a few miles away from the hustle and bustle of the financial district of Makati City. The hotel has amenities that made our stay most convenient and devoid of having to stress because of horrendous traffic jams. A complimentary hotel shuttle bus runs every hour to the shopping center a two minute ride it takes 5 minutes to get there on foot. The newest and biggest shopping center, Landmark, is a mall just across the hotel with hundreds of shops, food courts and restaurants to satisfy both shopping and the palate. The international airport is a few miles away and with the new Skyway, it takes only 15 to 20 minutes to get there. Carmela Bocanegra, and her team made sure that our stay in Crimson Hotel was an experience to remember. The smiles of the staff are welcoming, the servers are gracious at the VIP lounge. It offers breakfast, cocktails at night, and snack bars are open the whole day. Additionally, the state-of-the-art fitness center, and the massage (literally takes away the pain) for me it was especially a relief to the back, shoulders and neck. To sum it up, I gave the Crimson Hotel an A1 ++++rating. So much to share, but, I got to get into another exciting event that we are looking forward to, the 3rd anniversary of Manila Up! magazine. We will celebrate our Anniversary on the first week of December. Hope to see you there!

“In life, the more setbacks you have, the better prepared you will be in handling future challenges.” A smart, strong woman who came from modest beginnings, took risks and went to great lengths to achieve her dreams without giving up.
T
he modern world we live in brings new innovations and technology coupled with revisions and creations of rules and regulations that make for a constantly changing government. Together, they create a different environment than that to which we are accustomed. Given all the advancement in technology, however, our concern for our future and the following generations remain. Will tomorrow hold a brighter future for ourselves, our children and the generations to come? This oftentimes leads us to wonder about the decisions we are making and whether or not we are making the right ones. In our highly competitive world, education alone may no longer be all that we need to succeed in life. We then may have to consider opening our minds to possible opportunities that may help us achieve whatever success we envision for the future that would give us an edge. In this article, we will get to know more about such an opportunity from Ms. Edith “Jet” Abuda-Sison, entrepreneur and author of the book, “Owning Land Made Easy.” We meet different kinds of people from all walks of life that have some inspiring stories. One such story is from a woman who has surpassed trials and tribulations while maintaining a sense of humor. She has learned that, “In life, the more setbacks you have, the better prepared you will be in handling future challenges.” A smart, strong woman who came from modest beginnings, took risks and went to great lengths to achieve her dreams without giving up. She’s our definition of an empowered woman - entrepreneur and author, Ms. Jet Abuda-Sison. Founder and President of Capital Holdings, Inc., Jet is known to be a private person, humble and giving. time with family and friends, learning and sharing her knowledge. Born and raised in the Philippines, she graduated from the University of Santo Tomas. Initially, she planned to become a doctor, but even at a young age, she had a knack for entrepreneurship. For anyone who aspires to become an entrepreneur, trust, professionalism, expertise and, most importantly, excellence in communication is essential towards achieving successful business relationships and Jet has been able to manage and maintain such qualities throughout her professional life. Jet has had a number of jobs that brought her up the ladder of success, but not without some devastating setbacks. With her career in the San Diego County Assessor’s Office, she acquired knowledge on the advantages of owning real estate. From there, she worked her way into becoming an area manager and marketing director for different real estate companies and managed sales for both local and international markets. Following her experience from her tenure in the Assessor’s office and understanding the nuances in real estate, she made the decision to start her own specialized land company. Thus, Capital Holdings, Inc. was founded in 1999, wherein buying and owning land would be possible, easy and affordable to almost anyone. Convinced that the best way to invest in real

estate was to buy land in areas that hadn’t been fully developed (because the land wouldn’t be as expensive), she started her extensive research by identifying regions with the potential for fast and steady growth. She discovered these attributes in Southern California, specifically in the High Desert of San Bernardino County, and has focused on this location ever since. What’s special about this area? For one, anyone driving from Los Angeles or San Diego must drive through this area to get to the international tourist attraction that is Las Vegas, Nevada. Capital Holdings, Inc. now maintains a diversified inventory that provides an opportunity for anyone who may want to own land for pure speculation, inheritance, or to build upon. Plus, you don’t even have to be a U.S. citizen. But why land? Owning land has been a source of wealth for many people all over the world. Historically, it is one of the best speculative investments that also comes with tax benefits. Land is a tangible, universal, finite commodity that cannot be lost or stolen and requires minimal upkeep. As famed economist John Stuart Mill stated, “Landlords grow rich in their sleep.” Its value continues to appreciate with time which can help provide financial freedom in the future or make for a valuable inheritance. Unlike other forms of investments, its value can also be controlled by developing it for commercial, residential, industrial, and energy usage (e.g. solar). Since Capital Holdings, Inc. only sells land that the company owns, they provide flexible financing that doesn’t require anyone to qualify. This is how they make land ownership easy and possible while enabling their clients to leverage their money. For almost 20 years, Jet has shared her accumulated knowledge on land ownership. She also encourages her potential clients to do their due diligence, and determine whether or not speculative land investment is fitting for them. According to Jet, the key to success is passion for your product, taking calculated risks and focus on mastering your business. “Anything worth achieving requires hard work,” she says. It took plenty of time, effort, and heartaches to achieve the success she has so far, but at this point in her life, she is happy, content, grateful, and full of appreciation. She credits her achievements to the continued support of her husband, 12
children, family, staff, and friends. Now, in an effort to help others, her vision is jet set (pun intended) on Asia in America: a multifaceted theme park where visitors can learn about the cultures of various Asian countries and the rest of the world. With this magnitude of a project, she hopes to provide employment opportunities and the chance for anyone to gain a better understanding of our very diverse world. n To learn more about owning land and Jet’s entrepreneurial journey, her book “Owning Land Made Easy” is available at Amazon. CHRISTY-ANNE LOPEZ
Born of two Filipino immigrants and a native Los Angelina herself, multi-titleholder and host, Christy -Anne Lopez, tells her story and the importance of promoting her Asian American sisters. Christy was born in a predominantly Asian neighborhood in the South Bay region of LA. Her father transferred jobs which moved them inland to the High Desert where, as the only Asian in the community, Christy experienced racism for the first time. Her elementary school years were laden with bullying, and it was not until high school that she transcended the negativity by turning to performing arts as an outlet for her depression. She took journalism classes and became the emcee for the school’s activities. On stage, in front of the camera, with mic in hand, it dawned upon her – it did not matter what race she was, all that mattered was how she carried herself. “And if people are going to call me the Asian girl or the brown girl or the Filipino girl, well so be it because – they’re talking about ME! And they’re saying positive things about me now, because I am putting myself out there to show who I am inside as opposed to what color my skin is or how my face is structured”.
EILEEN KIM
Stories of scholastic hardships are common among the women participating in the day’s shoot. Miss City of Orange 2018 Eileen Kim, a first generation American of Korean heritage, describes how her upbringing in a cloistered environment is what ultimately founded her personal platform Let’s Talk – opening the discussion about prevention of self-harm. While going through her own period of self-harm, she was received by the school nurse who took a look at her wounds and laughed. The nurse made a quip about her obviously being Asian since her cuts were so parallel and straight. To this day her Asian origins continue to be exploited. “There are three of us in our organization: Miss Orange County, Miss Orange Coast and Miss City of Orange” she explains. “And [people would address the other queens as], ‘Orange, orange–’ and then pointed at me and said, ‘oh you’re yellow though, right?’” These experiences are what drove Eileen to compete in the Miss America organization, wanting to ensure that society and the health care system never fail anyone else the way that it did her.

PAMELA SAGUINSIN
Asian American titleholders are no strangers to deriving a positive from their pan-ethnic identities. Philippine-born Pamela Saguinsin was raised in Oman, returned to the Philippines, and finally settled in the U.S. Her multiculturalism is responsible for her easy-going nature, which garnered her the title of Miss Congeniality in the Binibining Pilipinas USA 2017 pageant. She was described as a mother figure by her pageant sisters. “If you can help, help out. If you’re a blessing, be a blessing to everybody else”. She goes on to assert that competing as an Asian American is not just about
cultural background; pageantry encourages inner beauty and does not solely rely on the physicality of its contestants. “Anyone can join a pageant. You don’t have to be the ‘prettiest’ girl, the tallest girl, the skinniest girl – you just need to have that personality within you and that confidence”. Pamela is the current Miss FCC/ FACLA 2018 (Filipino Cultural Center and Filipino American Community of Los Angeles respectively).
JUANNE ELISHA AQUINO
Juanne Elisha Aquino, also Philippine-born, spent her childhood years in Africa and the Philippines before relocating to California at age 7, expands on Pamela’s thoughts. “As an Asian American, it’s really important to embrace ALL of your backgrounds”. The Binibining Pilipinas USA 2015 continues, “It’s important to keep an open mind and an open heart towards people because that’s the only way we can really live in harmony with everyone else”.
GAYLE VELASCO
In the case of first generation American Gayle Velasco, a runnerup for Miss Philippines USA 2018, it was her mother who made the journey to America, while pregnant with Gayle. Through stories of her mother’s struggles, she ascertained that Filipinos were hard workers. She applies that generational knowledge and work ethic in her approach to pageantry. Given this is her debut into the pageant world where she is met with a barrage of new challenges. When faltering, she draws inspiration from her mother’s hardships and presses forward. “That’s something that I really connect with from our culture. That, I’m proud of ”.

discovered that Filipino women were oppressed, and made it her platform to promote equality both overseas and on the American homefront – and much like Krystal, half-Filipina half-Danish Michelle Thorlund also developed a passion for helping others.
ERINA LIGHTHOLDER
Pageants undoubtedly provide a gateway to endless opportunities for its contestants, but it is up to each titleholder to use their crown as a microphone, especially when moving forward onto a larger world stage such as entertainment. Half Filipina Half Irish Miss Beauty of the Philippines 2011 Erina Lightholder did exactly that during her time competing for Miss World Philippines 2011. Aside from rubbing elbows with Manny Pacquiao, her duties also allowed her to give back to orphanages within the Filipino community, an important ordeal to the dual citizen since that is where her mother’s heritage stems from. She now works as a host, social media influencer, and Disney performer.
KRYSTAL VON SEYFRIED
The half-Filipina half-German Miss Gawad Amerika 2017, Krystal Von Seyfried, also delves into her mother’s cultural influence. Krystal describes her as an “old-school Filipino mom”, who proclaimed Krystal would be a sure victor during her first pageant, the Little Miss Philippines Universe. Having not won, the then 13-year-old was devastated, which is why when she wanted to participate in a beauty pageant, her mother was hesitant. Even the event organizers informed her that due to her height she would likely not place in the top ten. Despite the lack of support, she pressed on. “We can’t be mad at our parents for raising us a certain way because they’re doing the best that they know how”. It was during this pageant that she generated an interest in philanthropy.

SUZANNE PEREZ
As migration trends rise exponentially more Eurasians are coming to the forefront of entertainment. Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach’s win in 2015 surely acted as a catalyst for Asians and Hapas all over the world. For Miss California Earth 2018 Suzanne Perez, seeing her fellow half Filipina half German win was a huge inspiration for her. “That was actually the time that I was thinking of giving up pageantry because living in California, you give into what you see. The stereotype is blonde hair, blue eyes, tall, and of mixed race I assumed that I would never win here in the USA”. Following Pia’s win, Suzanne felt compelled to compete in Mutya Ng Pilipinas 2017. During the competition, not only did she meet Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, she also met Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray. Having conversations with them helped her realize that the emphasis should not be on her background. “As long as I’m confident in who I am and I stay true to who I am, that’s what is going to help me win”, and so she brought that mentality back with her from competing in the Philippines, competed in, and won Miss California Earth, and is now moving forward to nationals.
DEANNA PAK
“The growing presence of Asians and Pacific Islanders in entertainment is a positive change, although a gradual one”, says Miss North Bay USA 2011 Deanna Pak. The half Lao, half Thai actress explains that when she is booked for shows it is typically as the sexy Asian girlfriend, the prostitute, the
18
sex trafficking victim, etc. However, in the case of the latter, she didn’t mind the stereotype because it raises awareness and brings attention to social issues. Ultimately, regardless of race, religion, or where and how one is raised, everyone is met by some form of adversity and falls into someone else’s stereotype. For Asians specifically, they are the most rapidly growing racial group that still lacks mainstream representation.(As a personal anecdote I am a half Filipina, quarter Syrian, quarter French-Canadian making a living as an actress in the U.S. To say that the struggle has been real is an understatement. But much like the aforementioned women – my peers, our strife culminates into our successes through the support of one another, because we promote each other, and we encourage others around us to do the same. Whether to carry-on a family legacy or instill diminishing cultural significance into future generations, as Christy-Anne Lopez said, “Something sets me apart [so] I’m going to be noticed and I’m going to stand out. So love your culture, who you are, where you come from”.) n

The founders identified the needs of the members and non-members. They came to a decision, to encourage them to take part in their sports of interest. The aim is to engage them in sports, Volleyball in particular, and physical activities, to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce possible vices. The group formed a Volleyball team called D’Casilleras Volleyball Team. Having a sufficient number of members, they decided to register the group with the UK Council, to legitimize the small charity group. It is licensed to function and as such make the members feel confident about their status. The license to operate as a small society was approved in March 2017 by the Borough of Brent and is awaiting approval from the Charity Commission of England and Wales. This newly formed charity organisation also aims to
help Filipinos who are distressed, disadvantaged and vulnerable. Since, Casilleras was founded in July 2016, the group has already accomplished many outstanding projects. The objective is to give joy to Filipinos in the UK including non members and serve as an advocate to promote equality among humans. n

MENTAL WELLNESS BY JANIE LACY
4 Tips to Fight Fair
M
in Front of Children BY JANIE LACY
FLORIDA
arriage and family can bring heightened emotions and challenging issues when we least expect it! Should a couple ever fight in front of the children? If so, what are the right things to keep in mind so that it is a learning experience and not damaging to the marriage and family? Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you walk through what can either be a very growing situation or one that can be very hurtful and leave imprints that can last a lifetime in our children.
1
Don’t get physical or aggressive:
It already deeply impacts a child’s security in their home and it is being a safe place for them when they see their parents disagree or fight, but it takes it to a whole other level when one partner becomes aggressive, physical or abusive. The child will hurt for the parent that is being attacked and can become
26
fearful, angry, resentful or scared of the parent that is doing the attacking. It also teaches them a very dangerous way to settle differences that they will carry into their personal lives. Have a plan as a couple to walk away or take a time out if emotions are getting to this level so your children see a healthy way to handle conflict.
2
Don’t ask your children to choose sides:
Again, it is already stressful enough for the children to see mom and dad fighting and have their security threatened, but can you imagine what it must do to them emotionally to get thrown in the middle of the dispute? Children need to be allowed to be children and not expected to be a referee or judge in their parent’s arguments. There MENTAL WELLNESS by Janie Lacy is a deep emotional conflict if
manilaupmagazine.com
MENTAL WELLNESS BY JANIE LACY they are put in this situation because it forces them to choose against someone they count on to be their safe place.
3
Do expose your children to discussions that are age-appropriate:
It is very difficult during tense times to think through how your child is viewing the parent’s disagreement due to the emotions going on, but try to be very sensitive to the subject being discussed so the child is not exposed to topics that are past their understanding or just inappropriate. Complaining to your child about personal habits of your spouse, sexual matters or even some financial issues will certainly do much more harm than good. It will bring great confusion to a child that is put in this situation and cause them to try to “grow up” too fast! There are many other options for parents to go to if they need to vent, such as a counselor or a trusted friend of the same sex but never the child!
4
Do have disagreements that can be resolved: You and your spouse both know those
areas that are either your “hot button” or that the two of you just can’t get resolved, those are the areas to stay away from in front of the children. Remember, they are learning how to deal with differences and disputes from their parents and they need to see that having arguments is not necessarily a bad thing as long as they are handled respectfully in the interactions and they
can see the steps to take to bring resolution. When couples have children, they must keep in mind that the children are going to learn a lot about problem solving by watching their parents. This can be a great training ground by learning how to disagree, but still show respect and compassion for each other. The children will observe their parents, take on how they handle these times and then go use what they have learned in their real-life conflicts and arguments. Are your interactions with your spouse teaching your children positive, conflict-resolution or is it setting them up to go into the world and escalate the tough situations they find themselves in with siblings, friends, classmates, or co-workers? By following these four tips, you and your spouse will truly model for your children how to fight fair while protecting their emotions! n

THE DISRUPTORS – THE AUDACITY OF TRUTH KAT SCHULTE
BUILDING ENTREPRENEURS
Of The Future
E
very generation has unique challenges when it comes to the new economy. Our economy and landscape of our world has been changing so rapidly that it can be extremely challenging to keep up, and it can be even more challenging finding the right way to go about living a life in this terrain. The landscape of this economy is so different that it’s full scope is not even understood, much less taught to the next generations. So how do we bridge that gap? We are in the best time to be an Entrepreneur that the world has ever seen. The opportunities are endless and marketing and advertising can be done very affordable. You don't need massive amounts of start up money and you can start making some kind of money in a lot of fields right away. The trouble is navigating the waters of entrepreneurship. There are SO MANY choices that you can make and a million ways you can go about starting your business. On top of that there are endless amounts of ways you can enter the market. So where do you start? Especially if you are a teenager with a tenacity for business?
32
This is what Kat Schulte, Jerin Mece and Vinod Varma wanted to explore with Start-Up New West; a beta program that took high school students from a business idea to the marketplace. And the students thrived! We took on 15 students, which in true business fashion, dwindled to 7 people and then we had 3 finalists that pitched to a panel of judges for a grand prize! We wanted to teach the next generations of entrepreneurs how to start a business. The students were taught, idea generation in an area that excited them, how to build a micro business plan, how to tell people about what they do and why they do it, and finally how THE DISRUPTORS – to pitch to potential THE AUDACITY OF TRUTH investors. We taught By Kat Schulte them the skills of Photos by Erik Fischer entrepreneurship that

The two runner ups were Joshua Lopez Plechaty and Giselle Whittaker, who both won $500 for their businesses. The grand prize went to Aira for her great presentation and micro-business plan but trust me, every single one of these students have acquired skills that they can take into their life in any area that they pursue. And every single one of them deserve all that is coming their way and more. They have been amazing to work with. Smart, kind, respectful. Even the students that didn't continue through the whole program. I am so proud of this generation. Their creativity and maturity has been inspiring. Students
especially just need the encouragement and the skills. We need to create future disruptors that keep making our world more interesting, more joyous and more encouraging for every future Josh HS generation. Because they are the future, and the happier they are, the happier the world is. The students had to pitch to a panel of judges who knew nothing about them or their business, they of course WOW’d our judges and earned the interest and respect of some amazing entrepreneurs. We had so much support putting this beta program together. Our investors, Erick Factor; Serial Entrepreneur and Harpreet (Happy) Nahal; Licensed Attorney donated the funds and their time for the students. And our panel of judges was made up of three amazing entrepreneurs; Karm Sumal CEO and Co-Founder of Daily Hive, Catherine Chick CIO of Mitacs and Julius Makarewicz CEO of Nude Vodka Soda. They asked the students amazing questions, engaged with their business idea’s and encouraged them in the best way! Being an entrepreneur is not just fun, it’s a community of people that care about what they do, and what they give back. Cheers to the #futuredisruptors and the Future change makers, we all can’t wait to see what you are going to do for and with the world, and believe me, you can! Much Love, Kat Schulte

KINGDOM ADVENTURES BY GILDA PINEDA DIONELA
Rivers are
Witness Civilization
the of
Thames River ENGLAND
T
here are several bodies of water in United Kingdom and for now our star will be Thames River. It is the most well-known of Britain’s rivers because it is the third (including River Shannon of Ireland) longest river that covers 346 kilometres which flows through important and equally famous places like London, Richmond, Kingston upon Thames, Windsor, Henley-on-Thames, Oxford and Reading. The Thames is tidal when it flows through London. River Thames is just next to where my sister lives and it is my favourite place to watch the sunset whenever there is. The Romans landed in England in AD 43.In AD 50, they barricaded in the first shallow part of the river and they called it, KINGDOM ADVENTURE Londinium (London). They
built the very first bridge where London Bridge is today. Other historic events around Thames: Edward the Confessor made the City of London as the centre of trade; and the City of Westminster as the government centre. He dreamed of restoring the ancient monastery and built the Westminster Abbey. It was consecrated on 28th December 1065. He died on the 5 th of January 1066 and buried in his newly built church the next day. The successor of Edward was Harold, he was crowned king in Westminster Abbey, a tradition of nearly a thousand years that still in effect today. The trade in London grew steadily within the continent and with other parts of the world along the banks of Thames. In 1700 London became the centre of early banking and financial activity, and world trade. Several bridges were built over the Thames because of this prosperity to name a few; Westminster bridge, Waterloo, Southwark and Blackfriars, Tower bridge and finally Millennium Bridge.

KINGDOM ADVENTURES BY GILDA PINEDA DIONELA As of March 2018, London maintained its rank as the world’s leading financial centre despite strong competition from New York, Paris, Tokyo and other Asian leaders. London is the dominating financial centre in the world and when I went to the Royal Exchange, I saw a group of Japanese bankers posing in front of it. Japan has been trading internationally since the ancient times and is among the G7, yet their tourists are so impressed with the Royal Exchange building in the same way that I am. How do I know they were Japanese? I asked. Anyway, world trading didn’t start in London.
Origin of International Trading (Goods and Services) Now is the best time to talk about trading. The result of Brexit is what the world is waiting for. London maintained to be the financial centre of the world and yet their faith in God, which was ingrained by their forefathers for thousands of years, eroded as quickly as a landslide. Edward the Confessor, who made City of London as centre of trade was a man of great prayer, he had a gift of healing. He was venerated as a saint in 1161 and the only major English saint whose body is still in its shrine at Westminster Abbey. The British people continued to enjoy the declarations and prayers made by Saint Edward and God-fearing leaders before and after him. Today, her majesty Queen Elizabeth remains to be God fearing. Direction Magazine, an official publication of Elim Pentecostal church reported that last June the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast was held in Westminster Hall attended by parliamentarians including Theresa May. It was a private prayer meeting. As a member of a public what appeared to us on the surface,
in the everyday environment is that most leaders in the powerful positions seemed to forget that the foundation of Commerce in United Kingdom which is housed in the Royal Exchange has an inscription chosen by Prince Albert taken from Psalm XXIV –“the earth is the Lord’s, And the fullness Thereof ”, United Kingdom is a Christian, Bible believing nation. Today, it appeared that in the United Kingdom not only in London, money and power are on top of everything. “The earth’s is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof “, in our lifetime in a not too distant future, the Lord will make them remember this verse once again. The Word of God is powerful and alive. The earliest record of international trading began in Egypt. They started trading in the regions of the Levant (Iraq, Cyprus, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and areas of Turkey) Libya, and Nubia (Sudan). Yes, wealth and civilization started in these regions which are now predominantly Muslim nations. There is a preview of ancient international trading in the bible that we can consider as a model. King David and Solomon and their friend, Hiram, King of Tyre. When King David was made king all over Israel, Hiram sent messengers, cedar trees, carpenters, and masons; and they built David a house. Since God didn’t allow David to build a house for Him because he had so much blood in his hands. Solomon was tasked to do it. Solomon commanded Hiram being his father’s ally, to cut cedar trees out of Lebanon for the house of God. The deal was his men will work with Hiram’s men, and Solomon will pay for their services, whatever wages he set. Solomon acknowledged that they have no one so skilled in knocking down the trees as the Sidonians.
manilaupmagazine.com
35
KINGDOM ADVENTURES BY GILDA PINEDA DIONELA God distributed skills and wealth to all people of different nations so that no nation would boast, they didn’t need anyone, anywhere because they had it all. Hiram agreed and in addition he asked Solomon to supply food for his people. Tyre was one of the cities of Phoenicia which was associated with Sidon, a place of sophistication and wealth (present day Lebanon). Tyre is wealthy, but the land is not suitable for growing crops that is why they depended upon their supply of food from abroad. The deal was closed. The object of the deal was to give glory to God by building His house. Solomon offered wages, Hiram counter offered what they needed, food. At the end the deal was mutually beneficial to both parties. Not only the leaders like Solomon and Hiram satisfied, the workers were paid the wages and people had food on their table giving glory to God Almighty. This story is found in I Kings 5. It is the detailed description of trading terms such as “goods and services”. Cedar trees are the “goods” and the skills of carpenters, masons and tree fellers are the “services”. As of this writing one of the controversial negotiating issues in Brexit is that“ UK goods will remain in The single market, but not services”. The threat of leaving the EU “with no deal” is even more pressing every day as I work on this. What I am trying to point out is that international trading is not new, and the bible is never obsolete. Even international trading is discussed in detail in the bible and is applicable today. The basic principles of trading between Solomon and Hiram are; Loving God who created heavens and earth, a leader full of wisdom, skillful (working while able) member of the society and a well look after the environment (cedar). These resulted to peace, satisfaction and glorify God. While on earth no man or nation can brag of superiority over the other. Because each man and nation have one common need, mercy from the Creator of heaven and earth. Ancient history up to the present proved wealth and prosperity are temporary. Who knows who is wealthy today and not tomorrow? Wealth is not evil, but the idolatry of it is. Different deals we encounter every day, but they are no big deal at all.
36
The biggest deal that every person must face is the assurance where to spend their life when they leave earth. Technological advancement grow so fast nevertheless there is something that never change no matter how sophisticated or how simply a person lived. We are born, then after that, we must leave everything behind us.
Rivers of Living Waters One day, earthly civilization will end. A new one is coming. And there is one and only requirement needed to enter that Kingdom, faith in Jesus Christ that He is One with the Father and the Holy Spirit. What is the biggest proof that there is life after death? The resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus was and is historical figure when He came on earth he didn’t show and teach people how to get rich. He taught and demonstrated about eternal life. John 7:38, ”He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water (KJV)”. As soon as we believe in Jesus Christ, He promised the Holy Spirit will dwell in us. The Holy Spirit is the living water of the river that never ends. The Holy Spirit is the only witness that there is one source of all rivers that will carry us into an eternity of peace and prosperity, He is Jesus Christ.

MAUI MANIA by EDITH PENDLETON
The Gift of
a Wonderful World H HAWAII
ere upon us is the threshold that defines yet another seasonal divide. Subtle as the "b" in the word subtle came "Makahiki" creeping up in a most subtle way. Suddenly waking up to sunshine came to be to a dark dawn. As my morning emerges, my sleepy countenance derives simple pleasures with the sun peeking from its home behind Haleakala. Then the comical and fascinating show begins. Picture this, a rooster strutting proudly along the road fronting my window, and, alas! Some odd number of hens and chicks follow as if it had a father figure leading the way, to where? Who knows? Remember I have a window view and not a panoramic lens. So here I sit enjoying my first cup of coffee when out of nowhere a flock of birds swoop down in unison as if greeting the first light.

Some mornings as the roosters crow, I see the semi feral cats at random either lounging on top of a car or simply sitting as relaxed as can be watching the world go by in stately confidence. Then, starts my day. With such blessings, simple as they may be I find "The Gift". The realization that here I am as blessed as most others on Maui who appreciate where we are here and now. Tomorrow may not have the same sunrise nor the magnificent sunset we have been accustomed to seeing, yet the gift is in the heart. Some days less or more spectacular in its beginnings and endings. I have opted for the "minimalist" lifestyle with 'less is more' as my guiding mantra. Less carbon
footprint included. And riding the commute on the Maui Bus has given me more than I expected in the most profound encounters along the way. The glad mix of tourists, regular riders and some more extreme characters share the bus to our destinations. As a metaphor, life is a bus ride, we get on, meet some riders already there, the next stop unloads and on come other riders. This goes on, till it's our stop... we leave those we met behind as others board to replace the space we vacate. Humbling as it may seem, I see "The Gift" ever present in this journey (my late Mom called it a 'pilgrimage'). Then as now it is evergreen ~ what a wonderful world. n

METROPOLITAN FASHION WEEK DESIGNER:
JOEY GALON
MODEL: ARIANA MANIBOG
INSPIRATIONAL ASSIGNMENT: To design and submit one project inspired by the King Tut Exhibition held at the California Sciences Museum @ USC *What inspired my design was an Ostrich Feather wand that was showcased in a large glass box. Apparently, the feathers collected for King Tuts wand were from the Ostriches that he had personally hunted. The feathers were displayed into an ornate, Egyptian inscribed wooden piece that was used by servants to cool off the King. *My design inspiration had a major influence to it. My dear friend, Chelsi Smith, former Miss Universe 1995, Miss USA 1995, and Miss Texas 1995, had just passed away from her battle with cancer. Her memorial service was held in Houston, Texas the same day as Metropolitan Fashion Week. I decided to design a piece in tribute to Chelsi that represented strength and beauty of a woman. I wanted the gown to celebrate women and remind them of the strengths they have within and to fight and take charge of life just as my friend Chelsi did during her time on earth.Â

Alcove Cafe and Bakery A
utumn has arrived in Cali which means cool sweater days. Can't believe we're already on the month of October and Christmas is two months away. Time sure flies! I sure had a great summer. Hope you all did too. Will be missing the warm summer months for sure. Though glad to be back doing reviews after a few months being away on a project. So let's start reviews on DineTravelinStyle!... Last spring my associates and I wanted to meet halfway for a late night dinner in LA for a production meeting. As a food-event blogger, it's always nice to find something new to dine anywhere in LA. A friend of ours had suggested Alcove Cafe & Bakery. As we came to park by the street in front of the cafe, there's the valet guy. It's about $6.00 to park valet, but you can actually park on metered streets or at other neighboring streets with no charge. Be sure to read road signs before you park. You are bound to get a ticket in LA if you're not careful. Already, I loved the outdoor feel of the Cafe with it's garden like setting, patios, dainty flowers, old trees and tree lights. As you walk in you have to fall in line to order food & drinks. You bring your drinks to the table of your choice or to the bar and you're given a number so that the server can bring your DINE TRAVEL IN STYLE food once its ready. the bar. Alcove Cafe serves American classics using the freshest ingredients, products that are local and organic, proteins raised in cage-free and grain-fed and non GMO corn-fed environments when available. Drinks at the bar are hand crafted cocktails prepared with fine spirits, fine wine, craft beers, freshly squeezed juices and house made syrups. Also, for all the coffee lovers out there, coffee beans and espresso are hand roasted weekly by an award winning Seattle based micro roaster. Loose leaf teas are also hand crafted. Alcove Bakery has lots to offer, all kinds of desserts and pastries like, tarts, pies and cakes made by local artisan bakers. Alcove's chocolates are made from award winning Belgian Chocolate and available for sale nationwide. They've got a lot of goodies for you to bring home as a souvenir or just because. Service is great at this place. You just have to be patient waiting in line as this place gets packed most days. Overall I love simple food at an affordable price, good service and the convenience of affordable valet service. Plus, the homey feel of the place as it is an old house turned into a restaurant. A house that has a lot of history in it. That's what makes it even better. Alcove is housed in two historic bungalows which are the oldest houses in Los Feliz. One is a Spanish duplex that was built in 1916 and the other is a Craftsman cottage built in 1897. Originally, the structures were private homes, then converted into commercial use in the 1970's. Over the more than 40 years ago, these homes have become specialty offices, a small private school, a real estate firm and most recently an
escrow company. In 2004, Alcove was born into what you all are enjoying now. A place to go for an early breakfast, lunch or dinner. This would be my 'go to' place after an event or for late night cravings. n (Enjoy dining at Alcove Cafe and Bakery. Let us know what you think of the place. See you all back here at DineTravelinStyle on Manila Up International Magazine for our next review of another amazing dining place or just basically a cool spot to hang out.)

SO SOFITEL BANGKOK’S Parisian Artist LOUIS-NICOLAS DARBON
FINAL ART EXHIBITION INSTALLMENT FOR 2018 FEATURING ACCLAIMED
BANKOK
R
ecently, SO Sofitel Bangkok hosted its final international art showcase for this year called “Beyond Bangkok” featuring the Parisian jetsetter artist Louis-Nicolas Darbon. This Darbon’s debut exhibition in Thailand is made possible with Art Curator Axel Roudouin, CEO and Founder of SARTO International Fine Arts Asset Management and Executive Partner, Laurent Macaluso. This exhibit will be a two-month long and will run until 10 November 2018.
ABOUT LOUIS-NICOLAS DARBON’S ARTS
Louis-Nicolas Darbon is renowned for his portraits of iconic pop figures, his take on famous luxury brand logos and fashion-inspired artworks. Besides creating art on canvas, Darbon has worked with some of the world's biggest fashion brands on bespoke illustration projects and digital campaigns, making him the personification of a jetsetter artist, who not only stands out from the crowd but also brings the worlds of art and fashion together.

Some of his collaborations include Adidas Y3, A. Lange & Söhne, Berluti, Bentley, Montblanc, Morgan Motors, Panerai, Rémy Martin, Roger Dubuis, and Paco Rabanne just to name a few. Also, his collaborations extend to the creation of murals in luxury hotels and commercial venues worldwide. When asked to define the techniques used to create his colorful and fun iconic portraits, Darbon says “I use mostly acrylic and spray paint in my works and use different techniques such as works with stencil but most of my paintings are free hand painted by hand”. Darbon has created over 15 series of art pieces in the past three years alone which have been displayed SIAM LIVING in solo exhibitions and group by MARICEL DIAZ exhibitions nationally at his

home-base in London, and internationally including France, Switzerland, the United States, Morocco, Japan, Singapore, and at the Art Basel Hong Kong. All of the pieces are described as colourful and fun, from iconic portraits with a twist to famous pop culture characters and playful fashion house logos with a street art influence.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
At an early age of three, Darbon started painting and was enrolled in adult painting classes by the age of five before his parents built him a small studio (which they still keep until today). Only a year after, he excelled beyond his adult peers in not only techniques but also in his artistic expressions. He said some of his earliest influencers and remain hugely inspiring him until today are Jean-Michel Basquiat,
Henri Matisse, Roy Lichtenstein and Salvador Dali. Coming from a multicultural background with extensive travels around the world, Darbon has always had an open mindset and a drive to create art for people from different cultures and walks of life. The inspiration for each series varies depending on where in the world he is travelling at the time and what he would like to show to represent his vision and interpretation of that city itself. “I find inspiration everywhere, from travels to magazines I read, new up-and-coming street wear and fashion brands and I get inspired from places I’ve visited and travelled to. It really depends what’s on my mind at that time. I get a lot of inspiration from current pop culture and what’s happening right now which reflects a lot of my work. Simple things like walking around Shibuya and being surrounded by neon lights or a stroll in the Miami Art Deco district or billboards in LA can bring inspiration to a piece and translate how I see the current pop culture on canvas. My art represents very much the time we live in.” says Darbon. “Beyond Bangkok” came as an inspiration to pay homage to Bangkok as a city and to remind all of us that art is and can be understood by all regardless of our age, race, sexuality, upbringing, and that the essence of it transcends beyond the borders of cities and nations. n If you’re in town by 10 November 2018, come visit the Park Lobby of SO Sofitel Bangkok on the 9th floor to see Darbon’s colorful work. One dinner party was the one Michelle Garcia, Director of Communications of Marriott Manila, hosted for me at “ManHo”, their Chinese Restaurant. It was a lauriat with ManHo's signature dishes chosen by Michelle herself. Everyone present was a special guest, but I was specially honored by the presence of US Ambassador Kim Sung. The birthday dance party hosted by our feeding group, “Angels to Street Kids”, was truly fun. It was held at “Society Lounge”, which is a place for dancing. The ASK family members were present in full force and showed off their dance prowess! It was a most fun evening ! The third celebration featured here was the one hosted by my BFF Dame Mariquita Salimbangon Yeung at “Txanton”, a Spanish Restaurant. It was an evening of gourmet cuisine, vintage champagne & wine and witty conversation. Comic relief was provided by Johnny Litton who regaled us with his jokes. n

SPECIAL FEATURE
PRINCESS JAMIDAH Beyond Beautiful By GRACE AGUILAR
I
n old town Pasadena, all ready to head on to another interview at DusitD2 Hotel Constance, Manila Up International Magazine was privileged to interview one of the 6 most fashionable ladies among Malaysian Royalty. We were so delighted and excited to have the opportunity to sit down and chat with a Royal Princess. As we entered the hotel and walked anxiously towards where her Royal Highness, Princess Tengku Chanela Jamidah was seated, we were welcomed by her warm, sweet smile. Looking beautiful and elegant in a beige ensemble from her own label "THAVIA". it was also a pleasure to meet her lovely younger sister, Princess Daza, who exuded charm and sweetness. Her Royal Highness in her calm and soft spoken voice spoke to us about herself and asked us to kindly address her as Princess Jamidah. Not only does Princess Jamidah possess the smarts and talents in fashion and business, she is a fashion icon, who inspires a lot of women all over the world with her style. She could basically "rock" any style from casual, to athletic wear, formal dress, to chic and edgy. She is not your average Princess and is described as a "Triple Threat Socialite". She's a fashion designer, businesswoman and an icon. She is also a mom to two beautiful children and to able to stay top notch is amazing. Princess Jamidah is also a member of the FROW of local and international fashions shows. Her Royal Highness is of Pahang royalty, is frequently photographed in a mix of international and local clothing designs especially in her own label "THAVIA" ,as well as her cosmetic brand "DIDA". She started up with her first baby project "ULTRA". ULTRA was a collaboration of different minds sending out the message in support of sustainable fashion. THAVIA is more about who she is, her personal style and about women empowerment. DIDA on the other hand is all about customers and women who are both confident and feminine. She's often spotted in simple, unique and daring styles. This comes to show that one doesn't need extravagant fashion to look good.

Her statement about fashion: "Style is not about trends. It's about portraying your personal image and your attitude through the way you dress." When it comes to her personal likes, these are to have her privacy, dress comfortably in denim or casual style to which she's most comfortable and to be at times out of the public eye. She has used her voice on social media through campaigns of THAVIA and DIDA to inspire women. She said social media has subconsciously affected us in many ways that we are not aware of. But, the true measure of influence is to be able to at least inspire one woman, and putting herself out there becomes worth it. She is very adaptable to life, a very hands on type of person who manages her life and business. She's creative, open minded and passionate about her work. As we continued chatting with her, it came as a surprise to find out that her mom is a Filipina from the province of Bicol. She even speaks a little Tagalog with ease. Indeed she wears many hats, her mother has always said that she could take her from the "pasar" to the palace and she would still know how to act appropriately. Being flexible and resourceful are her strengths. She leads a colorful life, studied at both international and local school and resided in Australia and the United States to finish her studies. Growing up she was always into discovering things. An adventurous person with no regrets in life, she's happy and contented where she is at this point in her life. She's very active in the community and takes interest in what's happening around the world. To her it's having 'the eye' and once you identify with it that's the time you will know your own identity. Her role as a mother in her 30's means having a good support system is key. Also, knowing when to take time off to recharge is essential. Being a mom is one of the biggest challenges for her. Princess Jamidah puts a lot of pressure on herself because she only wants the best for her children, hope is that they will grow to be good people. Lastly, and importantly, she has a wonderful group of friends who understand her and accepts her for who she is and not because of her royal status.  n (We are grateful to Princess Jamidah and her sister, Princess Daza for giving us the time and opportunity to do this interview. Truly an honor, it's not everyday anyone gets to sit beside a beautiful and talented princess. Much appreciation is extended to the management and staff of DusitD2 Hotel Constance for accommodating us during this interview. The Manila Up International Magazine and Manila Up TV Entertainment family would like to wish Princess Tengku Chanela Jamidah and her royal family well in all of their projects and charity work. And on that note... One piece of advice her Royal Highness, Princess Jamidah has for all those that are passionate about fashion and in making a personal statement, "Go for colors that suit your skin tone, black is a classic color, wear a great haircut and hair color which makes a lot of difference. To finish off a look, you can never go wrong with accessorizing with a good pair of earrings." )
