Enabling the Winning Social Enterprise SocialEdge from Infosys

The way I started with the Green Initiatives team is an interesting story. Nandan Nilekani himself interviewed me for the job and, he said that he was willing to consider me for the position on the basis of my passion for sustainable architecture, but I would retain my job…not if I merely excelled…but, if I could teach, as he put it “ Google how to google.” It was a challenge to innovate.

Infosys has always been an environmentally conscious company. Visit one of our campuses and you’ll see it straightaway. But four years ago, we launched a green initiatives team with the goal of setting an example in sustainability by coming up with great ideas that we could replicate time and again and also share with the rest of the world. We wanted to set global benchmarks by showcasing green initiatives that made financial, along with sustainable sense.

The rise of social media has empowered digital consumers with a dynamic forum where they can directly make an impact through learning and participating, expressing opinions on products and services, evaluating brands, and influencing peers before they purchase.

Business Overview

While companies cannot control these conversations, they can steer perception, learn about consumer behavior, engage with them, and satisfy their needs. Today, with millions of consumers driving conversations about brands, products and services across innumerable social media sites, enterprises are embracing this impactful medium to engage with employees, customers and partners. Realizing the power of their employee networks, these organizations have started leveraging such networks to strengthen their brands and connect more closely with consumers.

And so, we took on a number of ambitious goals: to cut our per capita electricity consumption by half; to use electricity generated from renewable resources; to become water sustainable by putting back more than we took from the ground; to use only rain or recycled water and; to reduce waste.
