1.1 SOFTWARES

This unit showcases the new softwares I learned throughout the course. To name the main software dealt in the class was Auto desk 3DS Max. The software was taught at a beginner level to advance stage. Basic interface and tools were introduced. Which was later explored in details as a part of self learning. Fig1. (Canay, 2016)

1.2 RESEARCH PROJECT BRAIN STORMING SESSIONS

As a part of in class learning we had few brainstorming session for the main research project it was as session in a group of 4. We discussed the problems, the existing scenario, ideas and proposal ideas for a better prospect. (Taylor, 2015)

7

BRAIN STORMING SESSION 1- BRANDING Point Discussed: Problem: No identity, disconnect from Glenferrie Staton, No uniformity Existing Condition: Campus Game Examples: Melbourne University, Titan Campus Solution: Branding Glenferrie Station, Way finding Improvement within campus

RESEARCH PROJECT ACADEMIC WORK SPACE RETHINK 13

PREFACE Change is inevitable and any aspect of life need to adapt to solve its shortcomings and develop to a smart, sustainable and scientific solution. This project will study the Swinburne University Hawthorn Campus, identify problems and suggest the possible development for the future of the campus. The project will analyze various themes, for instance Accessibility, Solar Access, Branding, Academic Workspace Rethink, Affordable Students Housing, etc. This chapter aims at the academic workspace rethink and the project is worked as a group of 4. The project outcome will be submitted as video narrating the process and proposal.

INTRODUCTION “Swinburne University of Technology is known for its science, technology and innovation. The university was founded in 1908 by the Honourable George and Ethel Swinburne as the ‘Eastern Suburbs Technical College’, gradually evolved and gained a university status in 1992. Swinburne has three campuses located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne — at Hawthorn, Croydon and Wantirna — offering tertiary education for higher education as well as Pathways and Vocational Education (PAVE). We also have a fourth campus in Sarawak, Malaysia. The National Institute of Circus Arts is located in Prahran, Melbourne and we also offer a range of qualifications online through Swinburne Online and Open Universities Australia. In 2019, we unveiled new locations in Sydney and Vietnam, each offering a small suite of sought-after Swinburne courses, and also opened an office in Nanjing, China — further connecting us to some of the fast-growing regions in the world. As a dual-sector university, Swinburne offers higher education and Pathways and Vocational Education (PAVE). We offer courses in a broad range of disciplines and our close ties with industry provide students with opportunities for valuable workplace experiences during their studies. Swinburne researchers have a reputation for high-quality research with particular strengths in astronomy, physics, engineering, materials science, computer science and information technology, design and innovation, health sciences, neurosciences and mental health. Underpinned by leading digital technology platforms, our researchers are collaborating with industry through embedded partnerships to drive innovation and create impact.” (Swinburne, 2020) (Goggle Maps, 2021)

THE PROBLEMS 23

A a part of the in class learning during brain storming sessions group of students came together to discuss the theme academic workspace rethink. Few issues highlighted across the campus were noted as: 1. Poor Daylighting

22

POOR VENTILATION AND COVID- 19 What does this mean for architects? “The first thing is that any naturally ventilated building with high occupancy – be it an aged care facility, a school, a church, a restaurant or a pub – is vulnerable when windows are shut and ventilation is poor. One of the reasons that may contribute to the propensity of Melbourne to have infection events is that it is relatively cold overnight, particularly in winter, as well as being a large city. Windows are often shut to keep in heat. The encouragement of outdoor dining by state governments is primarily because the evidence shows this minimizes the risk of infection and particularly super spreading events.” (Hanmer, 2021)

(StudentVIP, n.d.)

(Hanmer, 2021)

23

DISCONNECT TO OUTDOORS

(Druzbiak, n.d.)

(Frutos, n.d.)

(Mcdermott and Wolf, 2013)

Disconnect to outdoor leads to more interior exposure and closely spaced buildings causes poor ventilation which in return facilitate the virus growth. (Mcdermott and Wolf, 2013)

(Votruba, n.d.)

24

GOOD VENTILATION: BENEFITS

(Ancient Green Technologies, n.d.)

A good ventilated building provides healthy indoor air quality which in return have health benefits. Using concepts like Venturi effects we would design building facade for a better air flow.

(Montgomery, 2011)

(mcdevittair, 2018)

25

PROPOSAL IDEAS We focused our design on poor ventilation and outdoor disconnect. We incorporated a way to open up facade of various buildings with automation facade treatment. We also focused on connecting with outdoors by providing outdoor pavilions and pod for group studies. Such pods will be placed at multiple throughout the site. For a detailed study we focused on the EW and EN building and also highlighted a terrace outdoor space on the EW buildings. We looked into examples for ways to open up the facade and informal outdoor study area.
