URBAN CANVAS is a platform that aims at making a psychological impact on the citizens by connecting them to the existing structure. The goal is to create a web of socially linked transits by making them a platform for self- expression, where people can reflect their thoughts by using the tool of writing. It aims at reaching out to strangers by associating with their thoughts. Such a podium is provided in the form of rewritable frames. BRIEF - To identify an abandoned public space in our city that has the potential to be a vibrant urban social space and to evolve a design for the same to transform that space. - To engage in real life hands-on construction program at the chosen site and transform the place by keeping the budgets affordable and also to video document the process of transforming the urban space.

URB A NC A N V A S

We, as humans consciously or unconsciously perceive spaces; this is how we become a part of the journey of transformation... the transformation of that space into a place. Spaces lacking the human factor fail to connect to the society. They fail to trigger that sense of belongingness and attachment and therefore remain trapped between being a space and a place.

Narrative architecture is used as an instrument linking a space with memory. And the narration of people's thoughts becomes a justiďŹ ed tool to develop that sense of identity and belongingness to that place so that it can become a reflection of it’s individuals. The idea of humanising a brownďŹ eld site using the narration of people's thoughts, opinions, experiences and stories through writing, which will further upsurge interaction among them.

IF YOU HAD

ONE LAST WISH,

WHAT WOULD IT BE ? To initiate the dialogue and make people aware, these frames were made to travel through different vibrant locations in the city using the concept of parasitic architecture and also by linking the space to social media. A common and easily relatable question was asked. After these frames were installed, the spaced evolved in a span of 4 days.

DAY 1

DAY 4

LIGHTS WERE INSTALLED TO MAKE THE STRUCTURE COMFORTABLE AT NIGHT AS SUGGESTED BY THE PEOPLE. FINAL IMAGE STRUCTURE: A VIBRANT SOCIAL POINT FOR SELF EXPRESSION IN THE CITY.

DAY 3

IF YOU HAD ONE WISH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CITY WERE ASKED TO ANSWER THE ABOVE MENTIONED QUESTION BY WRITING IT ON THE FRAMES.

STAIRS WERE PAINTED YELLOW TO DRAW PEOPLE’S ATTENTION TOWARDS THE STRUCTURE.

DAY 2

COLORED REWRITABLE FRAMES INSTALLED ON THE STRUCTURE. THEY CHANGED PEOPLE’S PERCEPTION ABOUT THE SPACE AND ADDED A NEW INTERACTIVE FUNCTION TO IT.

PROSPECTION

Days changed into months, and months into years, and what was initiated, has now spread throughout the city. The transits which were slowly turning into neglected junks, took a sharp turn and became vibrant social spots. Today, as I stroll through this metropolis, I stop-by and read these thoughts. Every day as I read a new story, I connect to a new person. A man expressed his desire to learn to write after seeing these written thoughts all over the city. The impact is changing the town. It now celebrates the freedom of expression.

s e e r c h a u pa r i : louis i. kahn trophy 2017-18

The Louis I. Kahn Trophy was established in 1981 by the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation, Sri B V Doshi and family. The trophy, sponsored by UNESCO, involves physical documentation and analysis of a site on which being cited, enters the UNESCO databases as a heritage site. The relevant data is ďŹ nally reproduced by hand, using pen and ink as the medium.

HERITAGE AND DEMOCRACY The brief asked to document and analyze such administrative structures (built later than 1967) which are symbols of democracy. The structures which play an important role in the smooth functioning of the government.

Long before the introduction of prevalent western style of democracy in India, it took its first ever step during the late Vedic era through the concept of free speech. During the 17th century, the physical form of Chaupals came into existence as sacred structures for the purpose of practising the free form of speech. It is then, when architecture played a significant role in manifesting democracy and heritage through the physical form. The structures were open to everybody without any distinction and become a symbol of collective glory and pride amongst the villagers. D

SECTION D-D’ AS DOCUMENTED ON SITE

Being the central thresholds of public power and nodes of civic command, Chaupals proved to be an efficient link between the people, the administration and their heritage. Along administrative lines, the chaupal held the ‘seat of authority’ and also witnessed the panchayats and general assemblies.

EXPLODED AXONOMETRIC VIEW

POLITICAL ASPECTS In the ancient time, the political systemof Haryana arose from Meham Choubbissee in Behlba, making it a preferred place to build administrative structures on the village level for various panchayat meetings. It is also known for ‘twelve rouges’.

The feeling of collective belonging was strongly associated with the parish but the sense of a sacred heritage was still unachieved. The epoch of gradual bloom in conception of Chaupals in the Indian realm was followed by a dormant period where these physical manifestations of the power of the people, were no longer in light.

SOCIO-CULTURAL ASPECTS A stronger community feeling arrived when the people started practising age-old traditions and festivals , giving rise to the necessity of congregation spaces that could accomplish the social and cultural needs of the villagers.

DEMOCRATIC ASPECTS During the early 20th century, due to the fading of the oppresion of Mughals, Indian villagers started nurturing the democratic way of life and embracing the age old tradition of Chaupal as a democratic space.

From laying of the foundation to using and maintaining it afterwards, people played a major role. The structure is a result of various decisions that villagers made and their collective funding for its construction. It is treated as ‘Sanjhi Jagah’ which means a common place for everyone to interact and practice freedom of speech and expression.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS Sandstone and Kadam wood with superior structural capacities and easy to carve nature, were locally available. Due to Mughal rule that prevailed in North India, the technique to use these materials was locally known and is precisely seen in its building craftsmanship.

u r b a n c a n va s i i a r t i n s ta l l at i o n

Our entry from ANDC competition was shown to organising authority. They wanted it to be in a form of art installation so that it connects various communtities through their thoughts. So this installation was made which was easily portable, easily fabricable and can be installed atnywhere. It represented freedom of speech and expression, various thoughts were opinion’s were recorded on this installation .It merged with th e surrounding very well and came out as a real success.

logo design Chandigarh Tourism hosted a competition for designing a logo for chandigarh tourism.

The installation was made using mirror strips which were hinged on the steel frame and ďŹ xed into the wall. It plays with light and shadow and creates beautiful pattern on the wall and floor. The mirror strips rotates with movement of air with them.
