Strategic Leadership for Shipping A new open programme jointly designed and delivered by Henley Business School and the Cambridge Academy of Transport. Run by world-leading strategy and shipping experts, the five-day programme will equip participants with the necessary tools to develop effective business strategies for companies involved in global maritime trade.


Programme overview Helping shipping executives formulate, implement and adapt strategies in the ever changing shipping business. Strategic Leadership for Shipping is: • An executive development programme developed and delivered jointly by Henley Business School and Cambridge Academy of Transport • Designed to cater to the specific needs of companies involved in shipping to help them review their immediate and longer-term strategies and to position their business in a dynamic market place • A residential programme which runs over five days that enables participants to immerse themselves in a thought-provoking learning environment facilitated by experts in strategic leadership and shipping • Geared towards applied learning with tangible results. Theoretical rigour is blended with case studies showing how companies in different market sectors have utilised different strategies at different times to address internal and external business challenges • An end-to-end programme encompassing preand post-course work as well as coaching and mentoring.

Strategic Leadership for Shipping is designed to: • Explain the ‘language’ of strategy including operating and business models • Ensure that participants understand the tools and techniques used to formulate a corporate strategy using different perspectives • Examine how to overcome the challenge of communicating a strategic vision, mission and set of values to different company stakeholders • Provide an opportunity to participate in a scenario planning exercise which maps out possible future directions for the industry • Look at how business models can be changed to anticipate future business opportunities • Focus on the role of leadership to ensure the effective implementation of new strategies • Balance taught sessions with workshops and other opportunities to challenge one’s thinking • Allow delegates to benefit from the experiences of expert speakers from the industry.

Post-module action learning : After the programme, delegates work on a strategic leadership project defined by their company’s sponsor (direct line manager or top executive). The purpose of the project will be to implement concepts and key lessons from the programme.


Faculty Henley Business School and Cambridge Academy of Transport together bring extensive access to industry insights and strategic expertise. The programme is taught by expert contributors and guest speakers, a highly experienced team of shipping experts, strategic leadership practitioners and leadership coaches; coordinated and led by Dr. Malcolm Willingale and Dr. Stéphane Girod.

Dr. Malcolm Willingale Director, Cambridge Academy of Transport Dr Malcolm Willingale has worked in the shipping industry for over 35 years. Between 1990 and 2008 he held a number of senior management positions including Group Strategy Director in the leading ship management and shipping services company, V.Ships, part of V.Group. Prior to joining V.Ships, Malcolm was Editor of Lloyd’s Shipping Economist and also worked in the ship broking, freight forwarding and ports sectors. He is a Director of the Cambridge Academy of Transport and works extensively in maritime strategy consulting with leading maritime services business and industry bodies like INTERTANKO. Another one of his major clients is Lloyd’s Register where he is supporting the development of a group key accounts programme. Malcolm is a member of the advisory Board of the Seafarers International Research Centre and has represented InterManager at the IMO. Malcolm holds a PhD from the University of Southampton.

Dr. Stéphane Girod Assistant Professor in International Business and Strategy Dr. Stephane J.G. Girod is an Assistant Professor of Strategy and International Business. He is a thought leader in international and organisation strategy with extensive cross-industry executive development and research experience. His current research focuses on globalization and emerging economies, strategy and value creation in complex environments and strategy implementation, in particular the link between reorganisations and performance, and operating model design. He is actively involved in executive education programmes (e.g. ING, AVIC, Bank of China, UPM) and Master programmes (e.g. International Strategic Management). Prior to joining Henley Business School, he was a Research Fellow at the Accenture Institute for High Performance. He earned a PhD from the Said Business School, University of Oxford, a MBA from the Helsinki 5 School of Economics, and an MSc from Toulouse Business School.
